Per la prima volta su Heavyworlds.com , incontriamo gli Elysion in occasione dell’uscita del loro nuovo album “Someplace Better”, a distanza di ben 5 anni dalla produzione precedente. Disponibilissimi, Johnny e Christianna ci descrivono il nuovo capolavoro nelle sue mille sfaccettature.
Ciao e benvenuti su Heavyworlds.com! Siamo felici di avervi con noi. Come state ragazzi?
Johnny Zero: Un grande ciao a tutti voi cari lettori da parte dell’intera band! Stiamo tutti bene e inviamo vibrazioni positive a tutti voi!
Ho seguito gli Elysion sin dall’inizio, per cui è un piacere per me porvi qualche domanda. Cosa ci dite della vostra storia? Come vi siete incontrati e in che modo avete deciso di mettere su questa band?
Christianna: Beh, la line-up degli Elysion ha affrontato diversi cambiamenti nel tempo, tuttavia la squadra attuale lavora insieme da un bel po’, quindi le cose possono considerarsi stabili! In poche parole, Johnny Zero ha fondato la band nel 2006 e il resto del gruppo si è unito a lui di seguito, durante il percorso. Apparentemente, lui era un capitano particolarmente ispirato e noi tutti ci siamo sentiti parte del suo condividere sogni e ispirazioni.
Maxi Nil è stata la vostra prima cantante. Voi ragazzi la sentite ancora, anche se ora è con un altro gruppo? E in che modo avete incontrato Christianna? Amo la sua voce, è così particolare.
Johnny: La Grecia è una piccola nazione, non è così difficile incontrarsi a qualche evento o manifestazione, quindi si, sicuramente abbiamo avuto modo di vedere Maxi occasionalmente ed è bello restare in contatto! Conoscevamo già Christianna anche mentre era con un altra band, così lei si è unita a noi sei anni fa, mentre gli Elysion stavano registrano l’album di debutto “Silent Scr3am”. Abbiamo pensato che la sua voce sarebbe stata bene nelle atmosfere degli Elysion, così le cose hanno funzionato sin dall’inizio!
Cosa significa il nome “Elysion”? Viene dal Greco?
Christianna: Esattamente si. Ha un riferimento storico ad i “campi Elisi”, che nella mitologia greca è un termine per definire un immaginario luogo di riposo, una sorta di paradiso, per le anime dei coraggiosi. Il termine “Elysion” non ha un concept mitologico nella stesura dei brani, ma il riferimento trasognato e speranzoso si addice perfettamente.
Ho già recensito e ascoltato il vostro nuovo album “Someplace Better”, che già adoro, e ho notato che è abbastanza diverso dal precedente, più simile ad un Alternative Metal americano.
Ci sono gruppi americani che possono essere considerati le vostre ispirazioni principali?
Johnny: Certamente, volevamo che il secondo album fosse un passo più in la per gli Elysion e pensiamo che “Someplace Better” suoni davvero fresco e nuovo, con una sorta di riferimento allo stile americano che hai menzionato. Per quanto riguarda l’ispirazione, la band è composta da musicisti con background musicali differenti, ma certo siamo tutti realmente aperti mentalmente riguardo i nostri gusti musicali e apprezziamo band realmente diverse fra loro. Certamente, molte fra queste band sono americane. Ma la nostra musica, quando viene fuori, è basata sulla nostra identità di gruppo più che sulle ispirazioni provenienti da altre band in particolare. Non abbiamo mai in mente una band specifica mentre scriviamo, pensiamo a noi stessi e a cosa suoni meglio all’interno del brano.
Cosa intendete per “Someplace Better”? C’è un concept dietro questo nuovo album?
Christianna: “Someplace Better” non è un concept album, ma penso che l’atmosfera che ha alle spalle cambia passando da una canzone ad un’altra, così quando ascolto l’intero album fino alla fine ho la sensazione di aver appena raccontato una storia, che per me è una gran cosa. E’ una storia sulla natura umana e sugli infiniti e inesplorati passaggi che presenta. Ciò che più ho apprezzato di questo album è che tutto è cresciuto in quanto ad intensità: le canzoni sono più vive, più taglienti e più dirette, mentre le ballate dell’album sono totalmente forti nei sentimenti e profonde nelle emozioni. Non posso dire realmente se la storia raccontata in “Someplace Better” lasci un sentimento triste o felice in chi ascolta, ma l’importante è affrontare il viaggio.
Com’è stato lavorare con grandi personalità come Dan Certa, David Collins e Gustavo Sazes? Avete davvero un grande team alle spalle!
Johnny: E’ stato fantastico, non solo perchè questi ragazzi sono talentuosi e professionali, ma soprattutto perchè tutti loro hanno capito cosa gli Elysion stavano cercando e hanno realmente tentato di portare fuori i nostri sentimenti nel modo in cui avevamo bisogno di farli ascoltare. Ciò che è importante di un album è che ciò che ascolti rappresenti l’identità della band stessa e questo è quanto abbiamo collezionato dalle collaborazioni per “Someplace Better”. Speriamo di avere l’onore di espandere questo grandissimo team di persone meravigliose che lavorano con noi in futuro!
Quale canzone di “Someplace Better” può essere considerata la più rappresentativa degli Elysion?
Christianna: Questo è difficile da dire, perchè ogni canzone è stata messa nell’album per una ragione…abbiamo avuto molto materiale su cui lavorare e apparentemente molte cose sono state eliminate perchè volevamo scegliere ciò che meglio rappresenta il nostro sound nel modo in cui lo sentiamo dentro oggi. Probabilmente ognuno di noi cinque ha una canzone preferita dell’album diversa, e questo è davvero interessante! Io credo che “Someplace Better” sia da considerarsi davvero rappresentativa per ognuno di noi, dal momento che l’abbiamo scelta come tracktitle. Al contempo, personalmente penso che la canzone che ritengo maggiormente “mia” sia “The Promise”…non ho ancora trovato un modo per cantarla senza piangere!
Potete dirci qualcosa riguardo come funziona il vostro processo di composizione?
Johnny: Beh, l’ispirazione è onnipresente, per cui abbiamo sempre nuove idee in testa e nuove cose su cui lavorare…tuttavia, quando è il momento di registrare diventiamo abbastanza organizzati e lavoriamo in squadra, ci sediamo e pre-produciamo tutto l’album prima di entrare in studio, in modo da avere un’idea chiara dei nostri desideri.
Quali sono le vostre influenze e i vostri background musicali?
Christianna: Copre una vasta gamma di differenzialità e credo che portiamo questo dentro la nostra musica…Ognuno di noi ha un backround diverso, ovviamente c’è una base generale di metal/rock dove tutti noi abbiamo un punto di incontro, ma ognuno di noi contribuisce con elementi diversi. L’importante è far si che i diversi ingredienti si trovino bene gli uni con gli altri. Mi piace il fatto che non abbiamo gli stessi identici gusti, gli elementi gothic, electro, alternative, metal, ecc, vengono combinati. I miei compagni sono un’enorme fonte di ispirazione per me quando si tratta di scrivere musica. Niente avrebbe lo stesso sound senza le nostre personalità differenti.
State programmando un tour? C’è un posto dove vi piacerebbe suonare?
Johnny: Siamo a metà di un serio brainstorming in questo momento…”Someplace Better” è appena uscito e siamo più eccitati che mai dall’idea di suonare quest’album live e comunicare i nostri sentimenti! Credo che un tour greco sarà il primo progetto, è veramente importante suonare il più possibile nella nostra terra madre, specialmente nel difficile periodo che sta affrontando. Sicuramente seguirà il viaggiare fuori…speriamo di poter essere sulla strada in qualsiasi momento, e non c’è un posto che non ci piacerebbe visitare, l’intero mondo è un palco e gli Elysion sono più che disposti e desiderosi di salirci! Speriamo che “Someplace Better” ci porti verso una lunga avventura!
So che avete aperto un concerto degli Evanescence ad Atene. Due gruppi che amo che suonano insieme, mi sarebbe piaciuto esserci. Com’è stata l’esperienza?
Christianna: Sfortunatamente gli orari erano un pò stretti, perciò non abbiamo avuto granchè modo di incontrarci, ma condividere lo stesso palco è stato un grande onore, un altro dei tanti sogni degli Elysion che diventava realtà. Ciò che possiamo dire degli Evanescence è ovviamente nulla più che la loro gigantesca influenza sulla scena globale…forse che Amy Lee è addirittura più bella di quanto pensassi!
Con chi vi piacerebbe lavorare per una futura collaborazione in una canzone o un progetto?
Johnny:
Beh la lista sarebbe lunghissima! Non so neanche da dove cominciare a scrivere nomi, perciò non lo farò, perchè ci sono tantissimi artisti fantastici che abbiamo ammirato negli anni e sarebbe un onore e un privilegio lavorare con tutti loro un giorno! La cosa più importante, tuttavia, per far si che questo accada un giorno è continuare ad avere una buona collaborazione interna alla band e condividere lo stesso sogno.
Immagina di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Puoi portare con te solo 5 oggetti. Quali sarebbero?
Christianna:
Non ci si può riferire agli essere umani come “oggetti” 😉 tuttavia, io porterei i miei quattro compagni di squadra e la chitarra acustica di Johnny Zero..sono cinque no? (..E poi pregherei che uno di noi sappia come pescare o accendere un fuoco, in modo tale che gli Elysion non muoiano di fame, haha!)

Johnny Zero: Big hello to you all dear readers on behalf of the entire band!We are all doing great and sending our most positive vibe to you all !
I’ve been following Elysion since the beginning, so it’s a pleasure for me to ask you some questions. What about your story? How did you meet and in which way did you decide to get together as a band?
Christianna: Well, Elysion line up has gone through several changes throughout the years,however this current team has been playing together for quite a while now so things are beautifully steady!In short words,Johnny Zero founded the band back in 2006 and the rest of us kept joining him onboard as time went by.Apparently,he was a greatly inspired captain and we all felt like sharing his dream and inspiration.
Maxi Nil has been your former singer. Are you guys still in touch with her, now that she’s with another band? And how did you meet Christianna? I love her voice, it’s so particular.
Johnny: Greece is a small country,it’s hard not to come across one another in some event or gig so of course we get to see Maxi occasionally and it is nice to keep in touch!Christianna was already known to us even when she still was with another band so she joined us six years ago ,while Elysion were recording our debut Silent Scr3am .We thought her voice would fit Elysion’s atmosphere so things clicked right from the start!
What does the name “Elysion” mean? Does it come from Greek?
Christianna: Actually, yes.It has a historical reference to ”elysian fields”,which in ancient Greek mythology was a term to describe an imaginary place of rest ,like a paradise,for the souls of the brave .Elysion don’t have any mythological concept in our songwriting but the name kind of has a dreamy and hopeful reference we found very suitable.
I have already reviewed and listened to your new album “Someplace Better”, which I already adore, and I found out it’s quite different from the previous one, more likely some American Alternative Metal. Are there any American groups that can be considered your main inspiration?
Johnny: Indeed,we wanted the second album to be one step forward for Elysion and we think Someplace Better sounds very fresh and up -to-date ,with a sense of American approach like you mentioned. As for the inspiration part,Elysion consist of musicians of different backrounds but yet we are all very open minded about our musical tastes and admire a whole lot of different kinds of bands..Of course,many among those bands are american.But our music ,as it comes out,is based on our identity as a group rather than on the inspiration of any band in particular. We never have a specific band in mind when writing music,we thing of ourselves and of what we can sound best at.
What do you mean for “Someplace Better”? Is there any concept behind this new album?
Christianna: Someplace better is not a concept album but I think that the atmosphere behind it keeps flawing as we move from one track to the other, so whenever I listen to the entire album to the end I have a feeling that I have just been told a story, which to me is a great thing. It’s a story about human nature and the endless unexplored passages it has. What I most liked in this album is that everything has increased in intensity: groovy songs are sharper and most straight while ballads of the album are totally strong in sentiment and sinking in emotion. I cannot really tell if the story told in Someplace Better leaves someone with a sad or a happy feeling but the important thing is to take the trip.
How was to work with some big personalities as Dan Certa, David Collins and Gustavo Sazes? You do have a big team on your back!
Johnny: It has been awesome,not only because these guys are most talented and professional but mostly because they all got to understand what Elysion stand for and really tried to bring out our sentiment and approach the way we needed it to be heard.Is is most important that what you hear and see in an album is the identity of the band itself and this is what we most treasured in the collaborations for Someplace Better.We hope to have the honor to expand this great team of wonderful people working with us in future!
Which song of “Someplace Better” can be considered as the most representative of Elysion?
Christianna: This is hard to say because every song made it to the album for a reason…we had a lot of material to work with and apparently lot of stuff got left out because we wanted to choose what best represents our sound as we feel it in our hearts today.Maybe each of us five has a different favorite of the album,even,and that’s very interesting! I guess ”Someplace Better” was considered very representative by all of us, since we named the entire album after the same title. At this time,my personal Elysion ”repeat song”is ”The promise”…still haven’t figured out a way to get to sing it without crying.
Could you tell us something about how the writing process works for you?
Johnny: Well, inspiration is present all the time so we always have new ideas in mind and work on new stuff…however,when it is time to record we get quite organized and work as a team,sit down and pre-product the entire album before entering the studio so we have a clear idea of what outcome we wish to have.
What are your music influences and also your musical backgrounds?
Christianna: That covers a great range of differentiality and I guess we bring this to our music…Each of us has a different backround,of course there is a general metal/rock platform where we all meet but we each contribute different elements . The important thing is how to make the different ingredients work with each other. I like it that we don’t have the exact same tastes ,this is how gothic,electro,more alternative,metal ,etc,elements get combined. My bandmates are a huge inspiration to me when it comes down to writing music.We wouldn’t sound the same without everyone’s different personality.
Are you planning some tour? Is there any place where you would like to play?
Johnny: We are in the middle of some serious brainstorming at this point…Someplace Better just came out and so we are more than excited about performing the album live and communicating our feelings! I believe a Greek tour will be the first plan,it’s very important to play as much as possible in our homeland especially in this difficult period it is going through. Surely travelling abroad will follow…we wish we could be on the road the entire time, and there is no place we wouldn’t like to visit, the whole world is a stage and Elysion are more than willing and eager !Let’s hope that Someplace Better takes us on a long adventure!
I know you opened an Evanescence concert in Athens. Two groups I love playing together, I wish I was there. How was the experience?
Christianna: Unfortunately time schedules were a bit tight so we didn’t have the pleasure to hang out a lot but sharing the same stage itself was a great honor and another one of many Elysion dreams coming true. What can one say about Evanescence that is not more than obvious by their giant influence on the global scene…maybe that Amy Lee is even more stunning than i thought!
Who would you like to work with as a future collaboration for a song or new project?
Johnny: Well that’s a hell of a long list!I cannot even begin to think of how to start dropping names so i won’t ,because there are so many amazing artists we have all been admiring over the years and it would be an honor and a privilege to one day work any with them!The most important thing ,however,for this to maybe happen one day is to keep having a great collaboration in between as a band and keep sharing the same dream.
Imagine you had to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you. What would they be?
Christianna: One cannot refer to human beings as ”things”;),however ,i would take my four bandmates and Johnny Zero’s acoustic guitar..,that makes five, doesn’t it?(…And then i would pray one of us knows how to fish or start a fire so that Elysion wouldn’t starve to death,haha!)
