White Empress – Paul Allender

[SCROLL DOWN FOR THE ENGLISH VERSION]

Hail the White Empress!!!!

[ENGLISH VERSION]

Hello Paul and welcome to www.heavyworlds.com, first of all thank you for your time and availability! We’d like to start our interview telling you how we’re pleased to find you in White Empress, it sounds really interesting and original, how did the idea start and how did you set up all the pieces?

Oh thank you and we all are very pleased you like White Empress. It all started about 3 years ago while i was still in Cradle. We all were told to go do another band and put Cradle on hold so it could get some interest back again. The idea was to take a couple of years out and do something different and once we were ready to start Cradle again we would write a ground breaking album and tour with spectacular stage shows but as you can see that never happened. Other factors came into play which i didn’t agree with which stopped the much needed break. Because of this i decided to make White Empress my full time pro band and get musicians in who shared the same ideas and passion i had for metal, i needed a band of brothers and sisters who thought the same as I.

– From the very first listen to the single “Darkness Encroaching”, it’s easy to understand that it’s something really different from everything you’ve done long for many years. Do you think this is a way to unhook youself from the past, renewing general interest?

You know when i started WE i had a specific vision in mind, its this vision that has unlocked a different side of my writing. I’m bored with the scene right now and wanted to create something that will shake it up and wake it up. WE is my escape from the normal everyday crap you get in the music scene now, its got so watered down its laughable and nothing makes you feel like when you first listened to music anymore…. until now. I have renewed musical inspiration and drive now and you can hear this in WE, its amazing and a breath of fresh air.”

– It sounds like there’s a great attitude with this project, I dare to say there’s a touch of thrash metal, as a desire to start from a rougher sound, almost underground?

Yes there is a touch of thrash metal in there as well as many other styles of music. White Empress consists of all the great music genres in metal from thoughout the years, because of this we have created our own sound and original material. I wanted the sound to be underground, i love the way it feels, its so dark and the groove is awesome. White Empress for me is the feeling i use to have when i was a kid listening to metal back then, it was awesome and i missed the feeling of being moved by music. I wanted the hairs on my neck to stand up and get shivers up my spine when hearing metal again. Nothing in the scene was doing this for me so i decided to do it myself and start White Empress. So, hence the underground feeling and vibe, its awesome and how metal should be, dirty, sludgy and in your face with no “squeak clean” production like the scene now.

–  First tour dates announced, what do we have to expect on stage from the ambitious White Empress?

Honestly we are expecting it to go nuts live, this is the reason why White Empress was started, to play live. We want fans to lose themselves in our music and performance, just go with it, pits, moshing, stage diving its all up to you, react how you all wish. This time around we have kept it underground, cool as hell back drop and side fills, nothing more, simplicity is the key here. I have ideas for future shows that will include the audience etc, i want them to feel a part of the White Empress gigs.

– How did you get the idea for the Pledge music campaign, involving artists like Sara DiClemente and Jill Colbert?

The PledgeMusic campaign stemmed from the changes in the current music industry and the evolution of how albums are funded in 2014. Crowd funding is a way to generate budgets that are not owed to a label and to offer the audience some very special items that otherwise would be unavailable. We chose to go with PledgeMusic as a company because they’re the most professional crowd funding company that focuses on music specifically and album campaigns. Sara and Jill both presented the idea to us actually. They wanted to be involved and offered to lend their artistic talent to us to support what we were trying to accomplish. Both artists are very talented artists and brought the Empress to life with their interpretations of her. The whole concept of White Empress is expressed through many mediums of art, so we felt this was a perfect way to enlighten the listeners with another peak into the avatar herself.

– Do you think this the future of music, collaborations with fans, an intimate closeness to your audience?

I’ve always done this as far as i can remember. To me its very important to make sure fans feel part of what we do, more bands should be doing this. I hate the divide the industry has made between fans and bands. In the end of the day we are all the same, no matter what we do or how big people think you are. We all bleed the same and no one is any more important than the rest.

– Why did you choose Kit Woolven and Peaceville Records as partners for “Rise of the Empress”?

I’ve known Kit for a very long time, he’s a good friend of mine and an awesome producer. Kit heard WE and felt it was original and different enough to make waves in the scene so he asked to be a part of it and wanted to mix and master the album. Its the same for Peaceville, I’ve known them for a very long time too and also released albums through them in the past. I like the bands they have on there and there attitude to WE is amazing, they love it and after hearing the EP we sent them and they pretty much straightaway wanted to sign it. So now I’m back with a killer band and an awesome label with great people helping because they believe in WE.

– There’s an exciting wait around “Rise of the Empress”: is there a message you would like to send to your fans?

Yes, i want to say Rise of the Empress is the beginning of a very heavy journey that will turn this scene on its head. We are all excited about this release and once you hear the album and see us live you will see and hear why.

– White Empress means a total commitment for all band’s members or it will remain an isolated episode?

No its total commitment, it has to be otherwise it just won’t work. Everyone has to be focused and push forward the music etc of White Empress. Bands work when everyone in the band is committed and have the same vision as there band conrads.

– That’s all for now. Thank you for your time. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans and Heavyworlds readers?

See you on the road and thank you so much for the commitment to White Empress, you guys are awesome and you shall not be disappointed….. Hail the White Empress!!!!
