Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto modo di scoprire e scambiare due chiacchiere con gli olandesi Shiverburn in debutto con il loro EP “One Step Closer”. Ecco cosa ne è uscito dalla nostra chiacchierata.
– Salve ragazzi, benvenuti su Heavyworlds.com, come state?
Molto bene! Grazie.
– Il vostro EP “One Step Closer” è uscito da poco. Come vi sentite ragazzi nel vedere il vostro “figlio” diffuso nel mondo?
E’ meraviglioso.. e anche un po’ surreale. Perchè il cosa questo porterà nel futuro vicino va veramente oltre la comprensione. Il nostro EP è già stato ordinato in Germania, Regno Unito e USA. Quando la loro merce arriva, si fanno dei selfie con il nostro EP. Amiamo vederli!
– Avete ricevuto buoni responsi per il vostro lavoro?
Si. Da quello che sappiamo, tutti quelli che hanno ascoltato “One Step Closer” lo adorano. Le persone hanno già la loro canzone preferita dell’EP. Tutti erano stupiti dalla qualità delle canzoni e registrazioni. Siamo veramente contenti e grati di aver lavorato con il produttore Robin van Loenen e Troy Glessner, che ha masterizzato l’EP. Abbiamo anche ricevuto un po’ (e veramente buone) di recensioni su One Step Closer inclusa quella da parte di Heavyworlds.
– Parliamo delle quattro tracce nell’EP, di cosa trattano?
Explanation: questa canzone parla di una ragazza che non è abbastanza amabile (aka ‘Bitch’).
One Step Closer: tu arriverai lì (dove vuoi arrivare), nonostante a volte le persone cercheranno di trattenerti. Riguarda l’uscire da un vero periodo nero, che odi veramente, ma non vuoi disfartene perchè ti ha reso la persona che sei oggi.
Last One Standing: riguarda qualcuno che ti impedisce di fare cose che vuoi fare veramente, il liberarsi da quella persona, in modo da arrivare a tutto ciò che vuoi fare.
Fighters: beh… Come il titolo probabilmente già dice, questa canzone è sul combattere per qualcosa.
– Qual è la vostra traccia preferita dell’EP e perchè?
Martijn: La mia preferita è Last One Standing. Ha come una sorta di sorpresa. Mi piace suonare questa canzone, è veramente catchy e porta le persone a muoversi.
Erwin: Explanation, in parte perchè me ne son uscito con questo riff e anche perchè io la adoro veramente, questa canzone è un po’ più pesante (più rockeggiante) del resto.
Sanne: E’ veramente difficile sceglierne una! Mi piacciono tutte… Ma se devo sceglierne una sarebbe Last One Standing.
Luigi: One Step Closer. Ho sempre amato ritornelli enormi e questa ne ha definitivamente una. Inoltre è veramente melodica, mentre ha ancora quel grande sound rock. Quella combinazione che io adoro.
Gerrit: One Step Closer. E’ il nostro “leadsingle” e definitivamente è la migliore sull’EP, raccomando a tutti di ascoltare questa canzone.
– Parliamo ora della band, voi ragazzi siete i Shiverburn. Perchè avete scelto questo nome per la band e come avete iniziato?
Come ci siamo formati:
Sanne voleva una band dopo che la sua ultima si è sciolta. Ha iniziato a guardarsi attorno insieme al suo ragazzo Erwin che era già nella band e trovato i membri della band con un annuncio.
Erwin aveva un progetto di gruppo al college chiamato Shiver. Visto che pensavamo fosse una parola veramente cool, abbiamo voluto usarla come nome della band. Siccome Shiver suonava come un nome di una band non finito, abbiamo iniziato a pensare a un’espansione sulla parola. Più tardì abbiamo aggiunto “Burst” per cui risultò “Shiverburst”. Abbiamo veramente apprezzato questo ma ancora non ci sembrava giusto perchè non suonava esattamente come avrebbe dovuto. Dopo un po’ abbiamo deciso di sostituire Burst con Burn. In quel momento Shiverburn nasceva.
Abbiamo anche scelto questo nome perchè il nostro lavoro è un misto di riff pesanti e melodie catchy. Abbiamo anche canzoni un po’ heavy, che bruciano, ma a volte con un gusto per il freddo, per cui puoi riposare un po’.
– Come funziona il processo creativo per voi ragazzi?
Usiamo diversi metodi per scrivere canzoni. Ognuno arriva con le sue idee, e se a tutti pacciono, ci lavoriamo insieme. Questo metodo di songwriting funziona veramente bene per noi ed è il più comune dentro il nostro lavoro. Un altro metodo che siamo è fare jamming durante le prove. La traccia di apertura del nostro EP, “Explanation”, è un grande esempio di questo. Il nostro chitarrista Erwin è arrivato con questo riff e l’abbiamo portato insieme nella jam session.
– E Sanne, tu hai una voce così fantastica! Hai studiato in qualche scuola di musica o hai imparato da sola?
Grazie! Non sono mai andata a una scuola di musica, nonostante io abbia preso lezioni di canto per un anno e mezzo. Ho iniziato a cantare nei cori quando avevo 5 anni e ho iniziato poi per conto mio dopo quello. Una cosa veramente figa è che io canto con Marcela Bovio degli Stream Of Passion una volta ogni tanto!
– Cosa ci dite dei vostri piani per il futuro? Avete in mente di scrivere un nuovo disco presto?
Abbiamo un sacco di nuovo materiale in arrivo! Quindi sì, stiamo lavorando al nostro primo full lenght album. Per fortuna lo potremo rilasciare il prossimo anno!
– Avete avuto qualche episodio divertente on the road?
Ci siamo divertiti un sacco on the road o durante i live/prove! C’è una cosa veramente divertente sulla nostra band, perchè il nostro batterista (Luigi) sembra un po’ Edward Cullen di Twilight (haha) e il nostro batterista assomiglia a un DJ radio olandese famoso. Quindi a volte le persone pensano che siano quelle persone, ma in verità non lo sono, questo è veramente divertente!
– Siete mai stati in Italia? Se sì quale posto vi è piaciuto di più? Se no, dove vorreste andare e perchè?
Erwin: Sono stato sul Vesuvio quando ero ancora dentro la pancia di mia madre. Quando avevo circa 10 anni (penso), son tornato di nuovo in italia ma non ho idea di dove fossi stato. E’ probabilmente da qualche parte nel Nord Italia. Mi piacerebbe veramente tornare al Vesuvio e visitare Pompei prima o poi e vederlo con i miei propri occhi.
Luigi: Sono stato al Lago di Garda due volte quando ero più giovane. Penso che l’Italia sia veramente un bellissimo paese. E anche il cibo italiano è il migliore. Mi piacerebbe visitare Roma e Milano un giorno.
Gerrit: Roma, Firenze, Pisa, Siena e Venezia sono tra le città che ho visitato, mi piacciono veramente i posti che ho visto in italia. E son sicuro che mi piacerebbe rivederla di nuovo un giorno. Martijn e Sanne non sono mai stati in Italia prima, ma son sicuro che vorebbero andarci e suonare in qualche locale/palco.
– Immaginate di poter creare una band con chiunque vogliate come band (due chitarre, un bassista, un batterista, un tastierista e una o due voci). Chi scegliereste per ogni ruolo e perchè?
Abbiamo pensato molto per questa cosa. Ma ogni volta siamo arrivati alla stessa conclusione. La nostra band è perfetta così com’è. Ma abbiamo di certo i nostri modelli da seguire di certo

– Your EP “One Step Closer” has recently come out. How do you guys feel about seeing your ”child” spread in the world?
It’s amazing.. And also quite unreal! Because it’s really beyond comprehending what this will cause in the near future. Our EP has already been ordered in Germany, United Kingdom and the USA. When their package arrives they’re taking selfies with our EP on it. We love seeing that!
– Have you received good responses for your work?
Yes, we do! As far as we know everyone who heard ‘One Step Closer’ loves it. People even have their own favorite song on the EP. Everyone was amazed by the quality of the songs and recordings. We are very glad and thankful we’ve got to work with producer Robin van Loenen and Troy Glessner, who mastered the EP. We also received quite a few (really good) reviews about One Step Closer including the one from HeavyWorlds.
– Let’s talk about the four tracks in the EP, what are they about?
Explanation: This song is about a girl that is not quite loveable (aka ‘Bitch’)
One Step Closer: You will get there (where you want to come), although sometimes people will hold you back. It’s about when you’re getting from a really shitty period, that you really hate but don’t want to undo because it made you the way you are today.
Last One Standing: It’s about someone who forbids you to do stuff that you really want to do and breaking free from that person, so you can accomplish what you want to do.
Fighters: Well.. As the title probably already suggests, this song is about fighting for something.
– What’s your favourite track of the EP and why?
Martijn: My favorite is Last One Standing. It has some sort of a jump feel to it. I love playing this song it’s really catchy and it gets people to move.
Erwin: Explanation, partly because I came up with this riff and also because I really love that this song is a bit harder (more rocking) then the rest.
Sanne: It’s really tough to choose one! I like all of them.. But if I have to choose one it’s going to be: Last One Standing.
Luigi: One Step Closer. I have always loved huge choruses and this one definitely has that.
Also it’s really melodic, while still having that big rock sound. That combination I love.
Gerrit: One Step Closer. It’s our ‘leadsingle’ and definitely the best one on the EP, I would recommend everyone to listen to this song!
– Let’s talk about the band now, you guys are Shiverburn. Why do you choose this name for the band and how did you get started?
How we got together:
Sanne wanted a band after her last band got separated. She started to look around with her boyfriend Erwin who was already in the band and found bandmembers through an advertisement.
Erwin had a projectgroup in college named Shiver. Because we thought it was a very cool word we wanted to use it in a band name. However Shiver felt like an unfinished bandname. We started thinking about an expansion on the word. Later we added “Burst” to it which resulted in “Shiverburst”. We really liked this one but still it didn’t felt right because it didn’t quite roll of your tongue as it should be. After a while we decided to replace “Burst” with “Burn”. On that moment Shiverburn was born.
We also chose this name because our work is a mix of heavy riffs and catchy melodies. We also have songs less heavy. So our music is heavy, it’s burning, but sometimes with a cold gust, so you can rest a little bit.
– How does the creative process work for you guys?
We use different methods to write songs. Everyone comes up with their own ideas, and if we all like it, we work on it together. This method of songwriting works really well for us and is the most common within our process. Another method we use is just jamming at rehearsals. The openings track of our EP “Explanation” is a great example of this one. Our guitarist Erwin came up with this riff and we just brought it together in a jam session.
– And Sanne, you have such an amazing voice! Have you studied in some music schools or have you learned on your own?
Thank you! I never went to a Music school, although I had singing lessons for 1,5 years. I started to sing in choirs when I was 5 and began for myself after that. A really cool fact is that I sing with Marcela Bovio from Stream of Passion every once in a while!
– What about your future plans? Have you planned to write a new album soon?
We have a lot of new material coming up! So yes we are working on a full length album. Hopefully we’ll be able to release it next year!
– Could you tell us any funny episodes happened on the road?
We have a lot fun together on the road and during gigs/rehearsals! There’s something really funny about our band, because our drummer (Luigi) looks a lot like Edward Cullen from Twilight (haha) and our bass guitar player looks like a famous dutch radio DJ! So sometimes people think they are that person, but in fact they’re not, that’s very funny!
– Have you ever been to Italy? if Yes, which place do you like the most? If not, where would you like to go and why?
Erwin: I’ve been on the Vesuvius when I was still inside my mother’s belly. When I was around the age of 10 (I guess) I went to Italy once again, but have no idea where I have been. It probably was somewhere in North Italy. I would really love to go back to the Vesuvius and visit Pompeï some time to see it all with my own eyes.
Luigi: I have been to Lago Di Garda 2 times when I was younger. I think Italy is a really beautiful
country. Also Italian food is the best! I’d love to see Rome and Milan one day.
Gerrit: Rome, Florence, Pisa, Siena and Venice are among the cities that I’ve visited, I really like the places that I’ve seen in Italy! And I sure would like to see it again some time.
Martijn and Sanne never went to Italy before, but they sure would like to go there and perform at some stages/venue’s in Italy!
– Imagine you could create a band with whoever-you-want as members (two guitars, one bass guitar, one drummer, one keyboarder and oneor two voices). Who would you choose for each role and why?
We’ve put a lot of thought in this question. But everytime we came to the same conclusion. Our band is perfect as it is right now! But we do have our own rolemodels ofcourse.
