cominciare a scriverlo.
Prenderà parte a molte performance
Kamelot…state programmando qualcosa per celebrarlo, incluso l’inserire alcune tracce
nelle performance live?
No, non credo.
live…come hai vissuto questa “trasformazione” durante il “Poetry For The Poisoned” tour?
Ascoltavo Michael Jackson, i Queen,
“evoluzione”…i primi tre album erano orientati all’epicità, da “The Fourth Legacy” ad
farlo.
Grazie. Spero di vedere tutti i nostri fan italiani allo show a Milano l’8 ottobre, durante il
tour europeo. Rock on!
[ENGLISH VERSION]
– Hi Tommy! Thanks a lot for this interview. First of all, how are you?
Hey! I am fine! Just got back from a successful 1st leg of the Haven world tour in the US.
– Start talking about “Haven”, the new Kamelot release…do you want to introduce it to your italian
fans?
With Haven we wanted to create something that the listener could get lost in. To forget about
the stress and the egoistic hunt for the perfect life/carrier/family. We wanted it to be a record
that that people could listen to from front to back without skipping a song, feeling better about
them selves afterwards.
– Listening to “Haven”, the first impact is that your vocal melodies are better embedded than
“Silverthorn” ones…how was creating the lines of the new album?
Well I would say that is in the eye of the beholder. But if you feel that way that is a good thing I
guess. The procedure was pretty much the same as on Silverthorn. I worked a lot alone and
together with Sascha, Oliver and Thomas. Some work I did in Sweden and some was made in
Germany. The only difference being that I had more time to work on the album and more time
getting to know the guys in the band before the recording of Haven.
– “Haven” seems embraced by more obscurity and darkness than the “Silverthorn”…Is something
matured during the songwriting process or a focused target to obtain?
Well we had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted the album to sound like before starting to
write it. We wanted to portray this dystopic and dark future that we see is coming for humanity
due to the above mentioned, but also give the listener a feeling of hope… That this is not
irreversible… we can change the way we think and view the world, and thereby change the
outcome.
– The new release is, as the most part of Kamelot albums, a concept album…do you want to explain
the lyrical concept of “Haven”?
This is not a concept album in the vein of Silverthorn and it is not a story in chronological order.
One could say that it is different people telling their stories from the same dark dystopic world…
Stories about how to cope with reality, how to not lose hope, how to stand up for what you believe
in and how to pursuit your dreams despite your fears. There are elements and characters around
which the songs revolve … Things that are connected and could be viewed upon as a story.. but will
leave it at that…
– “Haven” contains two female guest performances, Alissa White-Gluz (for the 2nd time) and
Charlotte Wessels…why did you choose two so different female singers? Furthermore, Alissa sang
clean on “Haven”: why didn’t you choose to make her sing ‘growly’?
Diversity is important in music. We had a ballad and a melody for it that we thought would fit the
voice of Charlotte. We had the clean and the growly parts for Liar Liar so we asked Alissa if she
would like to do it and she happily accepted. Alissa is amazing and a good friend so it was a no
brainer.
– One time again, Sacha Paeth has been chosen as a producer…do you believe that he can be
considered the 6th member of the band?
Very much so. He has been a part of the sound for so long now. He truly is a master at what he
does.
– The first track revelead was “Veil Of Elysium” and the video-single is “Insomnia”…how was shooting
it? Are you planning other videos for the future?
Shooting the “Insomnia” video was great. We worked with Icode again from Serbia. Those guys
really know what they are doing. And on top they are super nice. There is going to be a new video
in a not to distant future.. so stay tuned=)
– Talking about the tour…now you’re performing the North American tour, then you will have some
summer festivals and then Europe and North America again. What can we expect from you this
time?
We definately gonna play a couple of new songs now that the record is out. The ones we played
during the US tour went over great with the audience so it should be a lot of fun playing them
during the festivals when people had even more time to learn the songs.
– As female singer on the North American tour there’s Alissa White-Gluz…who will be the guest
vocalist during the autumn tours?
Alissa was only with us in Mexico, for the rest of the tour we were joined by Linnea Vikström
from Therion. She is going to do most of the shows for the remainder of the year.
– This year is the 20th anniversary of “Eternity”, Kamelot’s first release…are you planning something
to celebrate it, like including some tracks during live performances?
No I don`t think so. We are looking forward with “Haven” just out on the market.
– Before becoming the lead vocalist, you have performed the backing vocals during live shows…how
did you live this ‘transformation’ during the “Poetry For The Poisoned” tour?
It was a good learning experience. Being on stage but being able to watch the dynamics of the
band. I learned a lot from that.
– I know that every interviewer asks you ‘how’ you feel performing Khan’ songs…but I prefer to ask
you if Khan has inspired you during the years, expecially before you took contact with Kamelot?
Actually not so much. I knew of the band and I had heard some songs that I liked, but other than
that no. I was never a metal fan growing up so I missed that whole influence era somehow. I
listened to Michael Jackson, Queen and stuff like that. Since I was asked to join the band I started
to digest the massive back catalogue, learning the songs etc.
– If we look at the history of the band, the explaining words could be ‘evolution’…the first three
albums where epic-oriented, from “The Fourth Legacy” to “Epica” the songwriting became more
‘power’ and since “The Black Halo” the sound is darker…which will be the future evolution of
Kamelot sound?
It is very hard to say… Now with “Haven” we wanted to try to incorporate some modern
elements and who knows what will happen next time. The only thing I know is that we will always
aim for the signature Kamelot sound that fans all over the world have come to love and expect
from the band, with a few modulations and suprises with each release of course.
– Ok Tommy. We’ve finished. Thanks for your time…if you want to add something, feel free to do it.
Thanks. I hope to see all of our Italian fans at the show in Milan on October 8th during the
European tour! Rock on!
