In occasione di una delle date italiane degli Amaranthe, noi di HeavyWorlds.com abbiamo avuto il piacere di scambiare due parole con Robin Sjunnesson dei supporter Sonic Syndicate. Di seguito il resoconto della nostra chiacchierata. Enjoy!
-Ciao Robin, benvenuto su HeavyWorlds. Come vanno le cose?
Ciao, grazie! Questo tour è stato grandioso, sapevamo che sarebbe stato fantastico, perché gli Amaranthe hanno più o meno la stessa tipologia di fan che abbiamo noi: amano le melodie, amano il sound heavy, amano i ritornelli orecchiabili e il resto. Sapevamo, quindi, che sarebbe stato un ottimo tour e non poteva essere meglio di come speravamo! Anche gli Smash Into Pieces, la band d’apertura, viene dalla Svezia come noi e sono ottimi amici e ragazzi meravigliosi. Ed è triste pensare che siamo quasi alla chiusura del ciclo di tour, finiremo domenica e tutti sono un po’ tristi, perché ci siamo divertiti tantissimo.
-Prima di tutto partiamo parlando del nuovo album ‘Confessions’…è una sorta di evoluzione da ‘Sonic Syndicate’ del 2014?
Onestamente abbiamo sentito di dover fare qualcosa di più. Non voglio dire che quando abbiamo scritto ‘Sonic Syndicate’ fossimo in un certo senso bloccati in un angolo, ma decidemmo di fare un album heavy perché era ciò che ci si aspettava da noi. Sicuramente era un buon album, ma non rappresentava ciò che avremmo voluto fare, così abbiamo deciso di scrivere un nuovo album, come una sorta di nuovo inizio. L’avevamo più o meno finito, ma non ne eravamo contenti, quindi abbiamo deciso di riunire la band ed il nostro management ed abbiamo cominciato a realizzare il nostro ‘Confessions’. E’ stato davvero un piacere scrivere le nuove canzoni, ci siamo divertiti davvero tanto ed abbiamo lavorato ogni giorno nel nostro studio in Svezia. E’ stato un processo divertente ed abbiamo deciso di non porci alcun limite, ma di fare tutto ciò che sentivamo e volevamo. Ed è così che l’album è diventato ciò che è oggi, ha influenze non solo rock e metal, ma anche pop ed ha un sacco di robe elettroniche. Questo è quello che abbiamo sempre voluto fare e siamo veramente orgogliosi dell’album. Scriverlo è stato davvero naturale; ho letto in giro che è un album più orientato verso il rock che verso il metal, ma credo sia una cosa positiva. Un sacco di persone, i nostri vecchi fan, sanno che abbiamo sempre voluto provare e sperimentare cose nuove, ogni nostro album è diverso dall’altro. Ovviamente scriviamo musica per noi stessi in primis; se alle persone piace, ne siamo più che felici, se al contrario, non piace, possono sempre ascoltare gli altri album. Alla fine è solo musica. Non abbiamo mai avuto un incontro per decidere di fare andare l’album in quella direzione,ma è successo tutto in modo naturale.
-‘Confessions’ vede la collaborazione di Kristoffer Folin come produttore…Cosa ha portato al suono dei Sonic Syndicate?
Molto, direi. Kristoffer è un amico della band. Il nostro bassista Michel lo conosceva già da prima, quando suonava in un gruppo chiamato ‘Plan Three’,che aveva un sound simile a quello dei Nickelback. Kristoffer era davvero interessato a lavorare con noi, così lo abbiamo invitato in studio e siamo stati lì un paio di giorni prima di mixare, ri-fare e ri-arrangiare tutto. E tutto si è rivelato fantastico. Quest’album non sarebbe stato lo stesso senza di lui; ha fatto molto per noi, specialmente con le parti vocali. Lui e Nathan hanno lavorato perfettamente insieme, creando melodie davvero ottime. Kristoffer è davvero aperto a tutto, non cerca di importi qualcosa, ma piuttosto di aiutarti a creare ciò che vuoi davvero. Quindi sono stato molto felice del fatto che abbia scelto di lavorare con noi. Stiamo continuando tutt’ora a lavorare insieme; registreremo alcune cose esclusive per Spotify, abbiamo già ricevuto il mixaggio oggi, quindi c’è solo bisogno di sedersi ed ascoltare il tutto. Sicuramente continueremo a lavorare con lui, perché è davvero un bravo ragazzo.
-Con ‘Confessions’ avete segnato anche il vostro arrivo all’etichetta Despotz Records, dopo molti anni passati con Nuclear Blast Records. Cos’avete trovato in questa nuova label?
Prima di tutto la Despotz Records è di Stoccolma, anche se hanno uffici persino a New York. Volevamo lavorare all’album con un tono accogliente e familiare e tutti quelli che lavorano con noi vivono nella stessa città. Ed in questo modo risulta molto più facile lavorare per la band. La Despotz aveva una certa visione riguardo al modo in cui volevamo creare il nostro sound ed hanno visto la giusta cosa. Sono ottimi amici per noi, ci conosciamo da tanti anni, anche se non avevamo mai lavorato insieme prima d’ora. Si stanno prendendo davvero cura di noi, è grandioso. La Nuclear Blast era davvero ottima, ma i Sonic Syndicate di allora non sono la stessa band di oggi. Abbiamo cambiato line-up, abbiamo cambiato stile. In passato ha funzionato, ma ora non è più lo stesso.
-Quindi è stato definitivamente un nuovo inizio, a partire dal cambio di etichetta e di stile…
Si, sicuramente. Dopo ‘We Rule The Night’ ci siamo fermati per circa 3-4 anni. Non abbiamo fatto più nulla, fino a quando non abbiamo deciso di iniziare ‘Sonic Syndicate’. Quell’album fu una sorta di nuovo inizio, ma è con ‘Confessions’ che è davvero cominciata la nuova era della band. Vogliamo farlo al 100%, vogliamo girare il mondo con i tour e siamo felici di ciò che siamo adesso.
-Dopo aver fatto tour con voi, Michel Barzien è diventato il terzo membro permanente della band. Com’è stato il processo di iniziazione a membro permanente?
Credo fosse chiaro a chiunque che volevamo Michel nella band. Karin se n’è andata perché ha avuto alcuni problemi in famiglia e la nascita di un nuovo bambino, quindi sapevamo fosse un addio per lei. Così abbiamo chiesto a Michel di fare un paio di tour con noi nel 2014 ed è stata una cosa davvero positiva. Lo conoscevo già prima, ma quando abbiamo cominciato a provare, si è rivelato essere esattamente come me e Nathan, ha lo stesso humor, gli stesso interessi, ama i film horror…Abbiamo avuto davvero bei momenti insieme. Quindi, dopo un po’ che era in tour con noi, è stato davvero naturale considerarlo un membro della band, perciò gli abbiamo chiesto se volesse far parte del gruppo e lui ha accettato subito. E’ grandioso averlo con noi, anche se è un nuovo inizio con nuovi membri, è come se ci conoscessimo tutti da anni. Io e Nathan siamo migliori amici da circa 7-8 anni ed ora Michel è uno di noi ed è meraviglioso.
-Prima del rilascio di ‘Sonic Syndicate’, avete avuto una pausa dalle attività della band ed una rivoluzione nel cambio di line-up, come tu stesso hai detto. Pensi che prendere una pausa dalla scena musicale e dai componenti del gruppo, sia una buona cosa per la vita di una band?
Credo che la pausa sia stata una cosa positiva per la band, ma allo stesso tempo è anche una scelta difficile, perché stai cercando di crearti una carriera e se ti prendi una pausa, rischi che la gente si dimentichi di te. Come ora, che stiamo cercando di ricostruire il nostro nome. Non voglio dire sia difficile, ma è una cosa differente per noi, perché eravamo soliti suonare in questi posti come headliner. Ed ora abbiamo cominciato dall’inizio; alcune persone si sono dimenticate di noi e adesso stiamo cercando di rialzare il nome della band e fare tour. La pausa è stata positiva per noi personalmente perché, mentre io e Nathan siamo ottimi amici, con il resto della band c’erano sempre discussioni.
-..succede quando passi un sacco di tempo con le stesse persone, è naturale..
Si, lo è. Soprattutto considerando che quel tour è durato due anni. Eravamo a casa una o due settimane tra una data e l’altra ed abbiamo vissuto così vicini, che dopo un po’ cominci a vedere anche l’altro lato delle persone. Ed è per questo che tutti i membri della band sono cambiati, non ha funzionato. Ma credo di essere felice, adesso, che sia accaduto, perché abbiamo i migliori membri, anche se è stata davvero dura non andare in tour per diversi anni, perché non sapevamo cosa fare. Ma ora siamo tornati e ci stiamo davvero divertendo.
-Questa è la cosa più importante. Ritornare a fare ciò che si ama davvero.
Hai ragione, lo è davvero.
-Ora siete in tour con Amaranthe e Smash Into Piecese in giro per l’Europa. Quali sono i vostri piani futuri per quanto riguarda i live?
In realtà abbiamo un incontro oggi con gli Smash Into Pieces, forse faremo qualcosa di divertente insieme a loro. Vedremo se riusciremo ad organizzare qualcosa per il prossimo anno, ci piacciano molto, la nostra musica si incastra davvero bene con la loro e siamo tutti svedesi. Sarebbe fantastico. Noi (Sonic Syndicate) faremo un tour in Finlandia subito dopo capodanno e qualche data in Russia, e stiamo cominciando a pensare anche ai festival estivi. Inizieremo a prenotarli già da ora, anche se non abbiamo ancora tour da headliner, ma accadrà un giorno. Dobbiamo prendere ogni cosa così come viene. Per adesso vogliamo concentrarci su questo tour, perché sta andando davvero bene. Poi vedremo cosa succederà.
-Siete considerati una band metalcore, ma il vostro sound rivela un legame con il melodic death metal svedese. Qual era lo scopo quando hai deciso di creare la band più di dieci anni fa?
Dal primo giorno che abbiamo iniziato la band, ci siamo detto che la melodia doveva essere la parte principale e così le persone hanno cominciato a definirci melodic death metal, metalcore e roba del genere. Credo che oggi i vari generi siano davvero mescolati tra loro; tutti traggono ispirazione da tutti. Sin dall’inizio abbiamo voluto mischiare il cantato pulito con le parti in scream ed avere un sacco di melodie. Questa era l’unica idea. Dopo la pubblicazione degli album, le cose sono andate in direzioni differenti, si sono rivelate buone e siamo riusciti a creare il nostro sound. Ancora oggi la melodia è una parte importante. Dobbiamo avere un sacco di melodie, che sia nella voce, nella chitarra o altro. E’ la sola cosa sulla quale cerchiamo di concentrarci. Credo che non possiamo essere inseriti in un genere preciso, oggi. Non siamo sicuramente melodic death metal, né tanto meno metalcore. Direi che è solo rock. Il metal ha tutti questi sottogeneri, ma noi siamo solo una rock band che ama le melodie.
-Ultima domanda. Durante la vostra carriera avete vinto un Award, venduto dischi d’oro e siete diventati Best Newcomers per quello che riguarda la scena metal. Se volessi condividere un segreto con le band sconosciute, quale sarebbe?
Il fatto è che abbiamo davvero un buon manager. Ci ha insegnato molto, perché ha lavorato con band come Mötley Crüe e tanti altri grandi nomi. E ci ha sempre detto fin dall’inizio ‘Se volete farlo davvero, dovete farlo al 100%’ ed è ciò che abbiamo fatto tutti. Tutti hanno lasciato il loro lavoro, io ho lasciato la scuola perché all’epoca ero davvero giovane, e ci siamo concentrati sulla musica, provando ogni giorno ed accettando ogni data live che ci venisse proposta. Questo è importante. Con le tecnologie di oggi, come ad esempio Facebook, puoi essere visto dovunque. Ma non vai da nessuna parte se resti solo lì. E se c’è anche un concerto di merda in un piccolo posto – non so, ad esempio, in Spagna- devi accettare quel concerto, perché è così che le persone hanno modo di conoscerti. Un sacco di band non riescono a crescere, proprio perché non stanno facendo nulla. Questo è ciò che abbiamo fatto noi. Abbiamo vinto il Bandit Rock Awards come miglior gruppo o qualcosa del genere, perché eravamo lì seduti a richiedere online le nostre stesse canzoni. Devi fare di tutto per la band, devi concentrarti su di essa. Certamente le tecnologie possono aiutare, ma la chiave di tutto è andare là fuori e suonare. Ed è per questo che noi amiamo fare tour.
-Ok abbiamo finito. Grazie per il tuo tempo.
Grazie a te. Spero di poter tornare presto. Abbiamo girato molto l’Europa in tour, ma non siamo stati qui spesso. Sono davvero felice di essere qui oggi. Ne parleremo e cercheremo sicuramente di fare più date in Spagna, Italia e giù di lì. Sappiamo di avere molti fan in Italia, lo vediamo anche dagli ottimi risultati su Facebook. Torneremo e spero che tutti verranno a vedere il nostro show, perché siamo sicuramente meglio dal vivo che in album [ride].

– Hello Robin, welcome on Heavyworlds.com, how are the things going so far?
Hi, thank you! This tour has been amazing, we knew this is gonna be good because Amaranthe has somehow the same kind of fans of us: the fans love melodies, the fans love heaviness, they love the catchy chorus and everything. We know this would be a great tour and it would have not been greater than we thought. Also Smash Into The Pieces, the opening band, is a Swedish band, really good guys and friends. It’s sad because I think we only have four shows left, we are ending on Sunday and this is sad, everybody are like moody right now because it’s almost the end of the tour and we had so much fun.
– First of all, start talking about “Confessions”, your new album…which is the evolution followed from 2014 “Sonic Syndicate”?
We felt like we wanted to do something more honestly. When we did “Sonic Syndicate”, we felt like.. I don’t want to say we felt like we were back to the corner but it was expected to us to write a heavy album so we did. Sure, it’s a good album but it wasn’t really where we wanted to go so we started writing a new album, as a fresh new start. We were pretty much have done with it but we said “Ok, we are not happy with this” so we have a meeting with everybody, with our management and we actually scratched the album and we started a fresh new “Confessions”. It was such a pleasure to write the new songs, we had so much fun and we were working every day back in our studio in Sweden. It was a fun process and we said at the beginning “Let’s not have any borders here, just do whatever we want, whatever we feel like”. That’s how the album turned out the way it is because it has influences not only from rock and metal like it has but also all these pop influences, a lot of electronic stuff. That’s what we always wanted to do but we have never sat down and said “Let’s just do it and have fun with the album” so we are really and really proud of the new album. It was very natural to write it. I know reading magazines that it seems like it’s more rock oriented , before we were more metal oriented you know. But I think it’s good, a lot of people, our old fans, knew that we always wanted to try something new , all our albums are very different from each other. Also this one is very different from any albums. But our fans know that we always try to experiment .. of course we write songs for ourselves first , if people like it, we are more than happy. If people don’t like it, you can listen to the other albums, it’s just music you know. We have never had a meeting to push for this style, it’s just happened naturally.
– “Confessions” sees your collaboration with Kristoffer Folin as producer…what did he give to Sonic Syndicate’ sound?
A lot I will say. Kristoffer is a friend to the band. Michel, our bass player, knew him before as he (Kristoffer) plays in a band called “Plan Three” which is a Nickelback band kinda. And he was really interested in working with us so we invited him in our studio and we sat there for a couple of days before we headed into the studio and we mixed everything, we re-did stuff, we re-arranged stuff. It turned out really really good. This album could not have sound the way it sounds without him. He did a lot for us, especially with the vocals as well. He and Nathan worked perfectly together, came up with really and really good melodies . He is really open, he doesn’t try to make a band “You should sound like this” but “What do you want to do? Let’s just do it and just feel natural with it.” So I feel really happy he wanted to do the album with us, we are still working together, we are going to record some exclusive stuff for Spotify with him, we actually get the mixes today so we just need to sit down and listen to them. We are definitely going to work more with him because he is such a good guy.
– “Confessions” sees also your landing in Despotz Records after many years and releases with Nuclear Blast Records…what did you find in the new records company?
First of all, Despotz Records.. They are from Stockholm, they are based in Stockholm but they are everywhere like in New York. We wanted to keep this album very friendly and family way in Stockholm so everybody who are working for us are living in our same city. It’s very easy for us to go around and work in this way for the band. Despotz had a vision about how we wanted to make the sound and they saw the right thing. They are good friends for us just before we know each other for many many years but we never worked together. It feels good, they are taking good care of us, we wanted the priority on this label, it is also a great work team. Nuclear Blast was really good, it’s just like the band “Sonic Syndicate” that signed with us is not the same band anymore. We changed members, we changed styles.. It worked out good but it’s not the same anymore.
– So it was definitely a fresh new start starting from the label to the style..
Yes definitely it was. After “We Rule The Night”, we pretty much broke up for three or four Years. We didn’t do anything and then we started with “Sonic Syndicate”. That album was a pretty much a new start kinda but “Confessions” really sees the new start of the band like this is a new era. We want to do it in 100%, we want to tour the world and yes, this is how it is right now and we are also happy to be here.
-Michel Barzien has become the third permanent member of the band…how was the process of initiation from touring member to official component?
I think it was really clear to everybody that we wanted him in the band. Karin left because she has some family issues and then she had a new kid and everything. We knew this was the end for her, we are still really good friends with her. And then we called Michel and asked to do a couple of tours in 2014 or something and it turned to be good actually. I knew him a little bit from before but when we started to rehearse, we realized he is exactly like me and Nathan, he has the same humour, the same interest, we all love horror movies.. We used to have a really good time together. So after a while when he was touring with us, it’s just felt he is the third member so we asked him “Do you want to be in the band?” “Yes, I am in the band”. So let’s just do it. It is really good to have him with us even though it’s like a fresh new start and also with new members, it feels like we, the three of us, have known each other for so many years. Me and Nathan are always stuck together, we are best friends for 7-8 years right now and Michelle is one of us and it feels really really good.
-Before the release of “Sonic Syndicate” you’ve taken a break in the band activities and a revolution in the line-up as you said. Do you think that take a breath from professional music scene and band members is necessary for the band’s life?
I think the break was good for the band but it’s also hard because you are going up hopefully in the career and if you take a break especially for a few years, people forget you. Like now, we are trying to rebuild the name again, I don’t want to say it’s hard but it is a different thing for us because we used to play in these venues as headliner ourselves and we used to headline everywhere. And now we are starting fresh from the beginning, some people forgot about us and now we are trying to get the name up again and just keep on touring. The break was good for us personally because ok me and Nathan are good friends but with the rest of us we were biting all the time, we were arguing..
– .. it happens when you spend a lot of time with the same people for a long time, it’s natural..
Yes, it is, especially that tour was for two years. We were home like maybe one or two weeks between the tours all time and we lived so close together and after a while, you started to see the other sides of a person. And that’s why all the members changed, it also happened because it didn’t work out. But now I guess I am happy it did happen because now we have the best band members so I should just be happy even though it was hard not to tour for a few years, it was really really hard, we didn’t know what to do but now we are back again having fun..
-That’s the most important thing! Being back again and doing what you love to do.
You are right, it is definitely.
-Now you’re touring with Amaranthe & Smash Into Pieces across the Europe, but which are your future live plans?
We are actually having a meeting today, maybe we will do something fun together with Smash Into Pieces hopefully. We will see if we can make work something for the next year , we like each other a lot and our music fits really well, both of us are from Sweden. It would be really really good. We (Sonic Syndicate) are going to do a Finnish tour right after New Years and then we have some Russian dates to do and now it’s also time to start looking for festivals for the next year. We will start to book them already but we don’t have a full headline tour booked yet but it will happen one day, but we have to take every day as it comes now. We have to focus on this tour now because it’s going so good and we will see what happens.
– You’re considered as a metalcore band but your sound reveals some ‘feeling’ tied to Swedish melodic death metal…what was the purpose when you decided to create the band more than ten years ago?
When we started the band, from day one we said that melody has to be the most important thing in our band and people have been calling us melodic death metal or metalcore or stuff like that. I think today the genres are really mixed, you can’t really say “This is a band of this genre” or “Like this band”. Everybody get inspired by everybody, we just said from the beginning we wanted to mix clean vocals and scream vocals and we wanted to have a lot of melodies. That just was the only idea. After we started to release albums, things start to go to different directions, it turned good and we made our own sound. Still today melody is the most important, we have to have a lot of melodies even though it’s not vocals, it can be keyboards or guitar or anything. It’s just the only thing we are trying to focus on. I think you cannot put us in a genre today, we are not definitely melodic death metal now, we are definitely not metalcore. I will say, it’s just more rock today. And it’s easy to say because metal has all of these subgenres, we are just a rock band who loves melodies.
-Last question…during your career you’ve won Awards, sold Gold albums and become Best Newcomes in the metal scene; if you could share a secret to unknown bands, what would you tell them?
The thing is we have a really good manager. He taught us a lot because he’s been working with Mortley Crue (controllare se si scrive così) and all of these super big bands. And he said from the beginning: “If you want to do that, you need to do it 100%”. So what we did honestly.. Everybody quit their job, I quit school because I was young and everybody focused on the music starting to rehearse every day and we take every gig we could take. That’s important. Today with the technologies you have, Facebook and everything, you can be seen everywhere. But that’s not going to get out of there and even though there is a shitty gig in a small village down – I don’t know- in Spain for example, you have to take the gig because that’s how the people get to know you. A lot of bands are not growing and not going over the edge because they are not doing everything. That was what we have been doing, we won the Bandit Rock Awards as the best rock group or something like this and it was just because we were sitting online requesting our own song. Let’s do everything for the band, you need to focus on it. But also technologies is helping people like we have Facebook or stuff like that, you have been seen but you need to get out and play because that’s where you have the key to everything. And that’s why we love touring.
– Ok, we’ve finished. Thanks for your time..
Thank you. I hope we can come back after, we are not here that much, we have been touring Europe a lot but we have never got the chance to go down here before, I am really happy to be there today. We are going to talk about it and we definitely try to do more Italy and Spain and down here. We know we have a lot of fans, we see our reaches from Italy are so good from Facebook, we are definitely coming back and I hope everybody will come to see our show then because we are best live instead in the albums (laughs ndr).
