Mantric Momentum is back with their new album Alienized, a powerful mix of melody, intensity, and heartfelt storytelling. Following the success of Trial by Fire, the band continues to evolve, delivering a sound that blends classic heavy metal elements with modern influences. We had the pleasure of speaking with Christer Harøy, the mastermind behind Mantric Momentum, to dive deeper into the creative process, inspirations, and challenges behind Alienized. From the impact of legendary bands like Iron Maiden and In Flames to the deeply personal stories woven into their lyrics, Christer shares his passion for music, collaboration, and what’s next for the band.
- Hello and welcome on Heavyworlds.com, it’s a pleasure to have you here. How are the things going so far?
Hi, Pinka. Thanks for having us. So far, everything is really good. We’re really happy to be a part of the Frontiers Music family, and they’re doing a great job for us. We’ve really been looking forward to getting the album released, so now it’s out, and we’re working on doing some live-gigs. Got a great live-line-up gathered, and hope get loads of gigs during 2025 and 2026.
- “Alienized” presents a powerful mix of melody and intensity. What was the main inspiration behind the album’s sound and lyrical themes?
Musically we have always wanted to create a heavy sound with loads of harmony guitars. I have always been a fan of bands like Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Helloween; bands with harmony-guitars. And I think the style of music with harmony guitars evovlved in the 90’s and 2000’s with bands like In Flames, and metal-core bands in the 2000’s like Killswitch Engage and Trivium. And I loved that style and wanted to bring this element in to Mantric Momentum, together with the classic hard-rock/ metal elements.
On top of this musical emphasis I wanted to add some ultra-melodic vocal-melodies, with big and massive choruses. I like to refer to Mantric Momentum as the lovechild of In Flames and ABBA…….hehehehehe.
Lyrically, I try to tell different stories, but often I tend to land on how to get through the challenges life throws at you. How to fight heavy periods in life, and to rise from it, maybe even stronger.
- Compared to your debut album “Trial by Fire”, how do you think your music has evolved, both in terms of composition and production?
I think “Alienized” maybe is a bit more direct, if you know what I mean. Still I think the foundation of both albums is the same. We spent a bit more time on the production this time, and I think that made “Alienized” maybe more as a “unit”. But, we’re also very happy with the “Trial By Fire” album as well.
- The title track, “Alienized”, explores themes of resilience and self-discovery. What personal or external influences led you to write about these topics?
I won’t say it’s just a personal experience, but also external influences. It’s a song about that you have to make an effort in all releationships, and not to take anything for granted. This means both in a relationship, as family, as colleagues and friends.
- “The Light” is a stunning and emotionally charged ballad. Can you share the story behind its creation and what it means to you as a band?
“The Light” is a song I wrote to my daughter for her confirmation. She’s my light, an incredible person with an amazing personality. So that song is really personal to me.
The song “Diamond”, from the “Trial By Fire” album, is a song I wrote for my son’s confirmation, a fantastic young man.
- What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the songwriting and recording process of “Alienized”? Did anything unexpected shape the final outcome?
Hmmmm…….I guess maybe….time. I alway tend to end up with too much to do at the end before the deadline. I’m one of the worlds biggest “Time-opportunist” ….at least I’m an European champion on the subject….hehehehe.
But I think the recording and composing-process went smooth. I like to be in the writing and recording mode. My family thinks it’s a bit tiring, since I’m really distant in these periods; caught in my own parallell universe….hehehehe
- The collaboration between Christer Harøy and Terje Harøy is at the core of Mantric Momentum’s identity. How did your creative partnership influence the overall direction of this album?
Me and Terje have been working together since 2009, I think, when we started writing and recording the Teodor Tuff album “Soliloquy”. And we’ve been family forever. Terje has also recorded guest vocals for Divided Multitude, and we’ve recorded vocals for 3 of the Pyramaze albums together in my studio as well. And since we’re family as well, so we know each other extremely well; both personally and musically. Kinda like a brotherly connection.
And I think that makes the collaboration between us really good. I know where to put the vocal melodies, and Terje can make changes on the melodies if he wants as well.
- Jacob Hansen handled the production of Alienized, giving it a massive and polished sound. What was it like working with him, and how did he help shape the album’s sonic identity?
Jacob is just an amazing human being, and a super producer. I’m so happy to be working with him. Jacob actually wrote the melodies and recorded vocal ideas for the first Mantric Momentum song I did. Jacob is a top notch singer as well. That song ended up as “Temple Of My Fears” featuring Ralf Scheepers from 2020.
As a producer, I’ve been working with Jacob from 2009, when he mixed an album with Divided Multitude. So I’ve been working with him ever since. I like the way he make things sound so good. And he’s also very versatile as a producer. Being a musician himself, he knows so much on how to make things sound great; as well as he knows so many genres. Jacob also plays with Terje in Pyramaze, so he’s a dear friend of us. Numero uno-person!!!!
- Among all the songs on the album, is there one that holds a special place for you personally? If so, what makes it stand out from the rest?
It varies a bit, but the track that maybe is most different, is “Remember”. It has a different approach musically, and lyrically as well. Musically I wanted it to be really melancholic, and subdued in the verses, and massive in the choruses.
Lyrically, it’s about losing a close person to amnesia or dementia; losing a person even though they are still alive, and the pain of seeing someone drifting away like that.
- Looking back at the recording sessions for “Alienized”, do you have any favourite moments or interesting stories that happened during the process?
The process is really relaxing, since we record all instruments and vocals in my studio. Loads of coffee.
But I think the best part of the recording, is when we start getting the mixes from Jacob. Always insanely exciting, because we know it will be good.
- Can you tell me more about the album or project these guest appearances are from, and how the contributions of Frank Nordeng Røe (drums), Jimmy Hedlund (guitar solos), and Magnus Karlsson (orchestration) stand out on their respective tracks?
All of them also contributed on the first album, so it was natural to bring them back for the “Alienized” album as well. I wanted an orchestrated intro on this album as well, and Magnus is truly amazing on orchestration (as well as writing songs, play guitar and sing) Such a genius.
I got to know Jimmy when we recorded guitars for an album from a project called Aldaria. A crazy good guitarplayer, and a top guy. And it gives the album an extra dimension bringing such a talent to the table.
Frank is a drummer we met back in 2014, when he had to step in as a drummer with Divided Multitude at ProgPower USA. And since then we kept in touch, and I’m happy to have the chance to bring him in on the drums on some track. Amazing drummer. He also plays in the live-line-up for Mantric Momentum
- With the album’s release coming up, do you have any plans for touring? Can fans expect any special performances or surprises during the live shows?
We don’t have any plans on touring right now, but we’ve booked some gigs, and hoping to get some festivals as well.
The biggest surprise I guess will be Tonje Harøy on the background vocals on our liveshows. She is Terje’s sister, a a great singer as well. She also sings the track “Shattered” which was recorded with Netta Laureen on vocals.
Maybe we add a coversong or two in the live set as well.
- Now that “Alienized” is complete and ready for release, what’s next for Mantric Momentum? Do you already have ideas for future projects or directions you’d like to explore?
We hope to do as many live shows as possible in 2025 and 2026, and to start to work on a new album. I believe we will work on the new material with the same formula, but we’ll see if there will be any changes. It is kinda influenced from what we’re listening to of music, and where we are in life in general, that might have some input on the outcome. But still I believe we will be true to the Mantric Momentum formula. It kinda defines our sound.

Ciao, Pinka. Grazie per averci ospitato. Finora tutto sta andando davvero bene. Siamo davvero felici di far parte della famiglia di Frontiers Music, e stanno facendo un ottimo lavoro per noi. Abbiamo atteso con impazienza l’uscita dell’album, e ora che è fuori, stiamo lavorando per organizzare alcuni concerti dal vivo. Abbiamo messo insieme una grande formazione live e speriamo di ottenere un sacco di date tra il 2025 e il 2026.
- “Alienized” presenta un potente mix di melodia e intensità. Qual è stata la principale ispirazione dietro il sound dell’album e i suoi temi lirici?
Musicalmente, abbiamo sempre voluto creare un sound potente con tante chitarre armonizzate. Sono sempre stato un fan di band come Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Helloween, gruppi che usano molto le armonie di chitarra. Penso che questo stile musicale sia evoluto negli anni ‘90 e 2000 con band come In Flames e, nei primi anni 2000, con band metalcore come Killswitch Engage e Trivium. Amo quel sound e volevo portare questo elemento in Mantric Momentum, unendolo agli elementi classici dell’hard rock e del metal.
Oltre a questo, volevo aggiungere melodie vocali ultra-melodiche, con ritornelli grandi e potenti. Mi piace definire Mantric Momentum come il figlio dell’amore tra In Flames e ABBA… hehehehe.
Dal punto di vista dei testi, cerco di raccontare storie diverse, ma spesso finisco per trattare il tema di come superare le sfide che la vita ci pone davanti. Come combattere i periodi difficili e risollevarsi, magari diventando ancora più forti.
- Rispetto al vostro album di debutto, “Trial by Fire”, come pensi che la vostra musica sia evoluta, sia in termini di composizione che di produzione?
Penso che “Alienized” sia forse un po’ più diretto, se capisci cosa intendo. Tuttavia, credo che la base di entrambi gli album sia la stessa. Questa volta abbiamo dedicato un po’ più di tempo alla produzione, e penso che questo abbia reso “Alienized” un lavoro più coeso. Ma siamo molto felici anche dell’album “Trial By Fire”.
- La title track, “Alienized”, esplora temi come la resilienza e la scoperta di sé. Quali influenze personali o esterne ti hanno portato a scrivere di questi argomenti?
Non direi che si tratta solo di un’esperienza personale, ma anche di influenze esterne. È una canzone che parla del fatto che bisogna fare uno sforzo in tutte le relazioni e non dare nulla per scontato. Questo vale per i rapporti di coppia, la famiglia, i colleghi e gli amici.
- “The Light” è una ballad straordinaria ed emozionante. Puoi raccontarci la sua storia e cosa significa per voi come band?
“The Light” è una canzone che ho scritto per la cresima di mia figlia. Lei è la mia luce, una persona incredibile con una personalità straordinaria. Per me questa canzone è molto personale.
Anche “Diamond”, dal nostro album “Trial By Fire”, è una canzone che ho scritto per la cresima di mio figlio, un giovane uomo fantastico.
- Quali sono state le maggiori sfide che avete affrontato durante la scrittura e la registrazione di “Alienized”? C’è stato qualcosa di inaspettato che ha influenzato il risultato finale?
Hmmmm… direi… il tempo. Finisco sempre per avere troppo da fare prima della scadenza. Sono uno dei più grandi “ottimisti del tempo” al mondo… almeno sono campione europeo in materia… hehehehe.
Ma penso che il processo di scrittura e registrazione sia andato liscio. Mi piace essere in modalità scrittura e registrazione. La mia famiglia lo trova un po’ stancante, perché in quei periodi sono davvero distante, perso nel mio universo parallelo… hehehehe.
- La collaborazione tra Christer Harøy e Terje Harøy è il cuore dell’identità di Mantric Momentum. Come ha influenzato la direzione generale di questo album?
Io e Terje lavoriamo insieme dal 2009, credo, quando abbiamo iniziato a scrivere e registrare l’album “Soliloquy” dei Teodor Tuff. E siamo sempre stati una famiglia. Terje ha anche registrato voci come ospite per i Divided Multitude, e abbiamo registrato le voci per tre album dei Pyramaze insieme nel mio studio. Ci conosciamo estremamente bene, sia a livello personale che musicale. È un po’ come un legame tra fratelli.
Penso che questo renda la nostra collaborazione davvero efficace. So dove posizionare le melodie vocali, e Terje può modificarle se lo desidera.
- Jacob Hansen si è occupato della produzione di “Alienized”, dandogli un suono massiccio e raffinato. Com’è stato lavorare con lui e come ha influenzato l’identità sonora dell’album?
Jacob è una persona straordinaria e un super produttore. Sono davvero felice di lavorare con lui. In realtà, Jacob ha scritto le melodie e registrato idee vocali per la prima canzone di Mantric Momentum che ho realizzato. È anche un cantante di altissimo livello. Quella canzone è diventata “Temple Of My Fears” con Ralf Scheepers nel 2020.
Lavoro con Jacob dal 2009, quando ha mixato un album dei Divided Multitude, e da allora collaboriamo sempre. Mi piace il modo in cui fa suonare tutto alla grande. È anche un produttore molto versatile. Essendo un musicista, ha una conoscenza incredibile su come far suonare le cose al meglio e padroneggia tantissimi generi. Inoltre, suona con Terje nei Pyramaze, quindi è un caro amico. Numero uno!
- Ora che “Alienized” è pronto per il rilascio, quali sono i prossimi passi per Mantric Momentum? Avete già idee per nuovi progetti o direzioni da esplorare?
Speriamo di fare il maggior numero possibile di concerti nel 2025 e 2026, e poi iniziare a lavorare su un nuovo album. Credo che continueremo con la stessa formula, ma vedremo se ci saranno cambiamenti. Dipende anche dalla musica che ascoltiamo e da dove siamo nella nostra vita, il che può influenzare il risultato. Ma penso che rimarremo fedeli alla formula di Mantric Momentum, che definisce il nostro sound.
