In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album della band, Stones Grow Her Name, abbiamo contattato il frontman e cantante della band Tony Kakko. Buona lettura!
Ciao Tony, è bello sentirti, come stai?
Bene, grazie!
Iniziamo la nostra intervista allora. Cosa possiamo aspettarci dal nuovo album “Stones Grow Her Name”? Un nuovo sound? Un nuovo stile?
Entrambi, penso. Le strutture sono molto più semplici, le melodie molto più dirette e l’approccio più rock. Questa è sicuramente una buona opportunità per quest’album di coinvolgere un pubblico più vasto ed anche per essere un nuovo capitolo nella carriera dei Sonata Arctica.
Cosa rappresenta la copertina?
C’è una figura femminile che siede in cima al mondo, con una mela marcia al posto della testa; questa è la nostra rappresentazione artistica per comunicare che stiamo distruggendo lentamente il nostro pianeta. Se pensiamo al titolo dell’album, “Stones Grow Her Name”, prima di tutto ci viene in mente un cimitero, come se tutte le pietre di questo mondo formassero il nome di madre natura; ho preso il suo nome da un paradiso solitario, è triste essere soli in un luogo dove le pietre costituiscono un cimitero con incisi i nomi di tutte le persone morte.
Parlando delle origini della band, formata nel 1995 col nome di Tricky Beans, per cambiare successivamente in Tricky Means, fino al nome attuale. Com’è stato scelto il nome Sonata Arctica?
Un amico ha avuto quest’idea nel momento in cui abbiamo ottenuto un contratto. E’ ovvio che i nomi precedenti non sarebbero durati a lungo. Sonata Arctica ci calza a pennello, perché veniamo dal nord, la parte artica e sonata si riferisce alle nostre composizioni classiche ed a tutte le influenze di questo tipo sulla nostra musica.
Continuando a parlare del passato, il successo è arrivato grazie al sound originale che contraddistingue la vostra musica ed anche per essere stati scelti come support band degli Stratovarius nel 2000. Questa è stata una grande spinta positiva, tante persone hanno potuto conoscere i Sonata Arctica. Che ne pensi?
Penso sia stato come vincere alla lotteria quando abbiamo ottenuto quel tour, insieme anche ai Rhapsody. Nessuno ci conosceva ed è stato fantastico andare in giro con band che hanno ispirato la nostra musica, proprio come gli Stratovarius. Abbiamo avuto degli ottimi riscontri dalla gente ed è stata una grande esperienza andare in tour con queste band. Sicuramente eravamo molto giovani ed inesperti; ma abbiamo avuto una grande possibilità, che ci ha facilitato molto nel futuro.
Da dove prendi l’ispirazione quando componi musica?
Dovrei giusto ricominciare a comporre qualcosa, visto che il nostro album è uscito. Comunque normalmente mi siedo ed inizio a suonare. Sai, cantandoci sopra poi nasce spesso qualche idea che ti porta ad una melodia nuova. Penso che sia la musica stessa ad ispirarmi. Amo la musica e tutto ciò che la riguarda, posso incontrarla ovunque, come per esempio quando sento il rumore di macchine industriali: “tunk, tunk, tunk” e già ho un ritmo in testa. Questo intendo quando dico che sento musica dappertutto ed ogni cosa della vita mi può ispirare.
Ho una grande curiosità riguardo la canzone “The Misery”. Il protagonista non sembra essere una donna. Penso che “Lady pain” sia la personificazione della sofferenza; è così o mi sbaglio?
Si, letteralmente… la ragazza è come una penna con piuma che io uso. Io sono un commediografo senza ispirazione, dunque quella penna è la mia musa, la mia ispirazione per quella canzone.
Quanto sono autobiografici i testi che scrivi?
Non molto veramente! (Ride, ndr). Sarebbe come domandare lo stesso a Stephen King! Sicuramente in alcune canzoni ci sono linee, parole che sono una sorta di valori importanti per me ma essi non riguardano la mia vita, sto molto attento a vendere qualcosa per la quale non posso successivamente dare una risposta personale, tutti dovrebbero essere cauti in questo. Penso sia lo stesso quando si scrive qualcosa di stupido su Facebook, non ne si esce più. Quindi quando scrivo le mie canzoni non menziono mai la mia vita.
I Sonata Arctica saranno a Roma il 30 luglio. E’ stata annunciata un’esibizione speciale, ci puoi anticipare qualcosa?
Attualmente mi sto concentrando molto sulla preparazione di questo tour, c’è ancora un sacco di tempo prima dello show, quindi penso sarà una cosa davvero speciale. Quando ne avrò un’idea più precisa te lo dirò!
Qualche volta ti leggo raccontare notizie dal backstage. Qual è stata la figura più imbarazzante o buffa accaduta dietro le quinte?
Eravamo in Giappone. Durante un assolo veramente lungo ero nel backstage, mi sono sbrigato a tornare sul palco e sono entrato dal lato opposto perdendo anche mezzo minuto della canzone perché stavo cantando nel backstage. Questa è la figura peggiore che ricordo!
Che tipo di rapporto hai con i fan quando non sei sul palco?
Quando incontriamo i nostri fan l’atmosfera è molto amichevole e di sicuro non saremmo dove siamo senza di loro. E’ fantastico parlare con loro, fare autografi e vederli lì per te.
Sfortunatamente non sempre c’è possibilità di incontrarsi, a volte ho delle restrizioni da seguire. Ad esempio non sempre posso uscire perché devo salvaguardare la mia salute perché a volte è molto facile prendersi un bel raffreddore che farebbe cancellare lo show successivo. Questo è il motivo per il quale devo essere prudente.
Qui in Italia è difficile essere una metal-band. Ottenere una casa discografica e suonare in giro è ancora più complicato. Che ne pensi?
Si, sta diventando sempre più difficile ma piano piano con l’esperienza le cose iniziano a diventare un po’ più facili, anche sapendo cosa puoi o non puoi fare.
Conosci qualche band italiana?
Oh, certamente i Rhapsody sono italiani, ha-ha! Recentamente si sono pure divisi in Rhapsody Of Fire e i Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. E … Labyrinth! Siamo andati in tour con loro ed è stato bello. Ma sono più ferrato su band finlandesi. E conosco solo le band principali degli altri paesi.
Hai la possibilità di lasciare un messaggio personale alle band emergenti. Cosa gli diresti?
Beh, dico sempre a tutti che la musica è un grande hobby. Quando essa diventa qualcosa di professionale bisogna ricordare di prenderla con tranquillità in ogni caso, studiare tutti i giorni per perfezionarsi. Ogni volta che si suona col proprio strumento ci si deve divertire. So che per alcune persone questo può essere difficile ma non si sa mai cosa succederà in futuro.

Let’s start with our interview…
What can we expect from the upcoming album “Stones Grow Her Name”? A new sound? A new style?
Both, I think. Structures are more simple, melodies are more “in your face”, the approach is more rock. This is surely an opportunity for this album, to involve different audience and also to be a new chapter in the Sonata Arctica’s career.
What about the art-work?
There’s a lady figure sitting on top of the world, she has a rotten apple as a head; this is our artistic way to say that we are slowly destroying this planet. Thinking about the name “Stones Grow Her Name” we first look at the graveyard, like all the stones of this planet are growing her name, mother nature’s name, I took her name from a lonely heaven, it hurts to be all alone in a field where the stones grow death people’s names, which is sure a graveyard.
Talking about the band’s history, it was founded in 1995 called Tricky Beans, then the name has turned into Tricky Means, until the actual name. How was the name Sonata Arctica chosen?
A friend of us came up with that name in the moment we had a recording contract, it’s pretty obvious that Tricky Means would not have been the name to use with the new album and so on. Sonata Arctica fits us pretty well, because we are from north, the artic part, and sonata referring to our little classical compositions and our classical influences, on our music at that time.
Keeping on talking about the past, the success has arrived thanks to the original sound of your music and also for being the support band of Stratovarious in the year 2000. That’s been really positive, so many people could know Sonata Arctica. What do you think about it?
I guess it was like to win a lottery when we got that tour, also together with Rhapsody. Nobody knew our band and it was fantastic to go touring with bands that also inspired our music, like Stratovarious. We’ve got so much positive feed from people and it was a great experience, we enjoyed so much to be on tour with those bands. Of course we were very young and inexperienced; we really had a great chance, everything has been so much easier thanks to it.
How do you get inspired when you compose music?
I should be looking for some music, because the album is almost coming out. Usually I just sit down and start playing, you know, I play and sing, I get an idea that leads somewhere. I think music itself inspires me the most. I love music, everything about music, I can hear music everywhere, for example I hear the noise of some kind of industrial machine: “tunk, tunk, tunk” and I get a rhythm; so, music is everywhere, everything inspires me, of course everything of life.
I have a big curiosity about the song “The Misery”. The protagonist doesn’t seem to be a woman. I think “Lady pain” it’s the suffering’s personification… is it like this or am I wrong?
Ya, literally … the girl it’s like a feather pen that I use. I am like a playwright, I’m running plays, and I’ve no inspiration, so that pen is like my muse, my inspiration for that song.
How much autobiographical are the lyrics that you write?
Not very much! (Laughing)It would be pretty much the same asking it to Stephen King! Of course in some songs there are lines, functions or words that are a sort of valor entry for me, but they’re not about my life, I’m very careful about selling something that I cannot write back, everybody should be very careful, I think it’s the same of when you write something stupid on facebook, you will never get out of it, so, when I write my songs I never mention my life.
You will be playing in Rome the 30th of July. It has been announced a special exhibition… can you tell us something more about it?
Actually I’m very busy to concentrate on that, but there’s a lot of time until the show, so I think it will be something very special. When I’ll have an idea I’ll tell you!
Sometimes you use to talk about the concerts’ backstage. What’s the funniest or most embarrassing thing ever happened?
We were in Japan. During a long solo, I can’t recall the name of the song, I was in the backstage, I had to run for coming back on stage and I entered from the opposite side to the one I went out from and I totally missed half a minute of that song, because I was singing in the backstage. That’s the worst thing I can remember!
What type of relationship have you got with your fans when you’re off of the stage?
When we meet the fans on tour we are friendly with them of course, we would not be there without them. It’s fantastic to talk with them, signing stuff and see them there for you. Unfortunately there’s not always chance to come out and meet everybody, due to some kind of restrictions I might be getting. I have to stay healthy on tour, because it’s so easy to go out and catch a cold and if I get it, the following show could be cancelled. That’s why I’ve to be prudent.
Here in Italy being a metal band it’s really complicated. Get a label and playing around is everyday more difficult. What do you think about it?
Yeah, it gets always more difficult but when you get more experience on how things work it becomes easier, also knowing what you can do and what you can’t do.
Do you know some Italian band?
Oh, of course Rhapsody is kind of Italian band ha-ha! And recently they have split in Rhapsody of Fire and in Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody. And … Labyrint! I toured with them, it was great. But I don’t listen to all kind of music, my knowledge is not unlimited, I use to know music from Finland. And I know the main bands from other parts of the world.
You’ve got the possibility to leave a personal message to the young bands. What would you say to them?
Well, I always tell everybody that music is a great hobby. Once music becomes something professional, remember to take it easy anyway, study every day until you’re absolutely sure that you’re making it with the music. Every time you take your instrument and tune it and play it, you gotta have fun. I know for some people it’s very difficult, but you never know what’s gonna happen next.
Our time is almost over. What would you like to say to all your Italian fans? I say to you goodbye with a big big “kiitos”!
