[ENG] Coming from Lappeenranta, Finland, and formed in 2021, Admire The Grim bring forth their debut full-length album, Resist, which follows the Rogue Fire EP released a couple of years earlier, also under the Finnish label Inverse Records.
ATG deliver fast and powerful death metal, where melody remains at the core of their compositions, even in their most intense and direct tracks (“Revolutions,” “Hypocrite”), allowing for an appealing catchiness to emerge even from aggressive and high-speed songs like “No Limits.”
Technical elements are used effectively to support precise rhythms, and the two guitars do an excellent job, giving the entire album a solid and cohesive sound. Also worth highlighting is the strong vocal performance of singer Katri Snellman, whose growls stand out confidently throughout all the tracks, helping to maintain the album’s overall high quality.
The opener, “Crescent Moon,” immediately brings to mind Wages of Sin-era Arch Enemy with Angela Gossow, featuring expressive and well-executed growl sections. The title track, Resist, is a straightforward song with well-crafted chorus sections, featuring guest vocalist Antti “Hyrde” Hyyrynen from Stam1na. “Rivers to Surge,” which I consider one of the strongest tracks on the album, is dominated by impressive guitar solos. The evocative instrumental piece, Acoustic Melodies from the Past and Present, recalls some of In Flames’ interludes, prominently showcasing acoustic guitar work.
ATG’s stylistic formula proves to be effective, though I would have appreciated a bit more variation, perhaps by daring to explore more personal and distinctive vocal approaches.
Nevertheless, Resist remains a very solid melodic death metal album that will not disappoint fans of the genre.
[ITA] Provenienti da Lappeenranta (Finlandia) e formatisi nel 2021, gli Admire The Grim portano alla luce questo full-lenght di debutto dal titolo “Resist”, che segue di un paio d’anni l’EP “Rogue Fire”, pubblicato anch’esso dalla connazionale Inverse Records.
Gli ATG suonano un death metal veloce e potente, dove la melodia è sempre al centro delle composizioni, anche in quelle più serrate e dirette (“Revolutions”, “Hypocrite”), facendo emergere benissimo un’orecchiabilità accattivante anche da composizioni aggressive e veloci (“No Limits”).
I tecnicismi sono utilizzati in modo funzionale alle ritmiche precise e le due chitarre fanno un lavoro pregevole, donando un sound compatto a tutto il disco. Da sottolineare positivamente anche la prestazione vocale della cantante Katri Snellman, il cui growl emerge sicuro in tutti i brani, contribuendo a mantenere alto il livello medio della proposta.
La opener “Crescent Moon” richiama da subito alla mente qualcosa di “Wages of Sin” degli Arch Enemy di Angela Gossow, con delle parti in growl espressive e performanti. In “Resist”, brano molto diretto e dotato di cori indovinati sul ritornello, compare Antti “Hyrde” Hyyrynen degli Stam1na come cantante ospite. In “Rivers to Surge”, che ritengo uno dei pezzi migliori del lotto, le parti solistiche di chitarra ne fanno da padrona. La suggestiva strumentale “Acoustic Melodies from the Past and Present” ricorda certi intermezzi degli In Flames con protagonista la chitarra acustica.
La formula stilistica degli ATG risulta vincente, avrei solo apprezzato qualche variazione in più, magari osando soluzioni più personali anche e soprattutto a livello vocale.
“Resist” rimane in ogni caso un buonissimo disco di melodic death metal che non deluderà affatto gli estimatori del genere.
