[ENG] An intro of noise and effects quickly gives way to a blistering start with “A Gleam.” The drumming is precise and fast, complemented by a cascade of thick guitars weaving a well-crafted riff with a distinctly Swedish death metal flavour. The growling vocals are fairly solid, but the chorus—featuring harmonised clean vocals—falls flat. While the idea could have been promising, it feels unfocused from the outset, with a tedious and overly repetitive melody.
“Regret” kicks off strongly with a guitar intro worthy of In Flames, accompanied by just the right touch of gritty vocals. Here the clean vocal chorus formula reappears too, yielding better results than in the previous track, but still not enough to impress. Unfortunately, the vocal section doesn’t quite match the quality of the instrumental backing that supports it. The issue isn’t solely down to the mixing (with the clean vocals being excessively loud); something in the melodies themselves makes certain sections a real slog to get through. This same problem crops up in the opening section of the following track, “Refuse to Reconsider,” though the song as a whole feels more balanced. The instrumental work remains consistently solid, with engaging guitar lines and a rhythmic section that provides firm support throughout.
The closing track, “Distraction from Reality,” is perhaps the standout piece on this EP. The flaws previously mentioned persist but are less pronounced here and don’t significantly detract from the listening experience. Clean vocals work much better when doubled with growls, and this vocal approach could well be a winning formula for future releases.
Cephyre seem to have two distinct sides to their identity. On one hand, they demonstrate a commendable level of expertise, with tightly structured instrumental parts and effective growling vocals. The guitar work, in particular, stands out for its harmonisations, riffs, and arrangements. On the other hand, they’re still a band searching for their own path, as shown by the somewhat unconvincing use of clean vocals. With greater attention to detail and a refined production approach (I’d also recommend giving the kick drum a more natural feel during double-pedal sections), I sincerely hope Cephyre manage to take that next step forward—a leap in quality they likely deserve.
[ITA] Una intro di rumori ed effetti, e si parte subito a razzo con “A Gleam”. Drumming preciso e veloce, accompagnato da una cascata di chitarroni che intessono un riff molto azzeccato dal sapore Swedish death metal. Il growling è piuttosto incisivo, ma il ritornello, arricchito da diverse clean vocals armonizzate, non convince del tutto. L’idea poteva essere interessante, ma risulta fin da subito poco a fuoco in alcune intonazioni, con una melodia tediosa e troppo ripetitiva.
“Regret” parte alla grande con un incipit chitarristico degno degli In Flames e una voce sporca al punto giusto. Anche qui si ripete la formula del ritornello con voce pulita, ottenendo un risultato migliore rispetto al brano precedente, ma purtroppo non ancora sufficiente. Il comparto vocale non raggiunge i livelli della parte strumentale che lo sorregge. Il problema non si limita al mixing (il volume delle voci pulite è eccessivamente alto); c’è qualcosa nelle melodie che rende l’ascolto davvero ostico in alcuni punti. La stessa problematica si ripropone nella prima parte della successiva “Refuse to Reconsider”, che però, nel complesso, risulta una canzone più bilanciata. La parte strumentale è sempre ben congegnata: le trame di chitarra sono interessanti e la sezione ritmica sostiene il tutto con sicurezza.
La conclusiva “Distraction from Reality” è forse il brano migliore di questo EP. I difetti già evidenziati permangono, sebbene in misura minore e tali da non compromettere l’ascolto del pezzo. Qui le voci pulite funzionano meglio quando vengono doppiate dal growl, e questa soluzione vocale potrebbe rappresentare una formula vincente da sviluppare in futuro.
I Cephyre sembrano avere una doppia anima: da un lato, sono una band che sa il fatto suo, credibile e quadrata nelle parti strumentali ben strutturate e nelle growling vocals incisive. Inoltre, il lavoro delle chitarre è eccellente, sia per le armonizzazioni che per i riff e gli arrangiamenti. Dall’altro lato, però, sono una band ancora alla ricerca della propria strada, come dimostra l’utilizzo non sempre efficace delle voci pulite. Con una maggiore cura dei dettagli e una produzione più adeguata (suggerirei anche di rendere più naturale il suono della grancassa nelle parti di doppio pedale), auguro ai Cephyre di riuscire a compiere quel salto di qualità che probabilmente meritano.
