[ENG] The Ka’rah are a death metal band from Croatia and they play hard. They formed in 2022 and this mini EP is their self-produced debut. They describe their sound as a fusion of ’80s thrash metal and ‘new’ death metal. Honestly, I don’t fully agree with this description, but it doesn’t really matter when evaluating a product that, despite being short and improvable in a few key areas, remains a strong example: raw, honest, and almost uncompromising. The four tracks on Epitaphs of War draw heavily from thrash and old-school death metal, with headbanging guitar riffs, fast rhythms, and deep growling vocals. Decapitator is a very clear introduction to their style. Blasphemous Preacher pushes even harder with an interesting, though only hinted at, melodic guitar element. Ruthless Leader maintains the energy of the previous tracks, but here, the melodic instrumental section towards the end is more prominent, and, guitar-wise (with due proportions), it reminded me of Chuck Schuldiner’s Death. In the closing track, Cannibal Hymn, there are a few breakdowns that don’t weaken the song’s aggression.
Personally, I find the retro vibe of some of their music fascinating and I think it’s important for a band to blend influences with their own distinctive elements. However, I would recommend they pay more attention to the sound quality of the vocals and drums. Sometimes, the vocals are too loud and the reverb effect is so strong that it reduces their impact. The drum sounds could also be improved to create a more cohesive mix. The Ka’rah are still in their early stages, and their path could already be well-defined. Their debut is promising, though, and they’ll have plenty of time to improve, evolve, and, most importantly, define their own identity. Ad maiora!
[ITA] I Ka’rah provengono dalla Croazia, suonano death metal e pestano forte. Si sono formati solo nel 2022 e questo mini EP è il loro esordio autoprodotto. Autodefiniscono la loro proposta come una fusione fra il thrash metal anni ’80 e il “nuovo” death metal. Ad onor del vero, non mi trovo perfettamente d’accordo con questa definizione, ma poco importa ai fini della valutazione di un prodotto che, seppur di breve durata e perfettibile in alcuni punti fondamentali, rimane un esempio di ottima proposta: cruda, onesta e pressoché senza compromessi. I 4 brani di cui è composto Epitaphs of War attingono infatti a piene mani dal thrash e dal death old school: ci sono riff di chitarra da headbanging selvaggio, ritmi veloci e growling vocals belle profonde. Decapitator è un biglietto da visita molto chiaro in questo senso. Blasphemous Preacher spinge ancora di più sull’acceleratore con un interessante, ma solo accennato, spunto chitarristico più melodico. Ruthless Leader mantiene il tiro delle precedenti, ma qui l’apertura strumentale melodica sul finale del pezzo è più marcata e chitarristicamente (e con le dovute proporzioni) mi ha ricordato i Death di Chuck Schuldiner. Nella conclusiva Cannibal Hymn spunta qualche breakdown che non affievolisce l’aggressività del pezzo.
Personalmente, trovo affascinante il gusto retrò di alcune proposte, ritengo altresì importante per una band coniugare le influenze con elementi distintivi propri. Mi sento di consigliare anche una cura maggiore nella resa sonora di voce e batteria. Le parti vocali a volte risultano fin troppo alte di volume e con un effetto reverb così accentuato che ne limita l’impatto. Anche i suoni di batteria sono migliorabili, al fine di ottenere un mixing più amalgamato. I Ka’rah sono solo agli inizi e la loro strada potrebbe essere già ben tracciata. L’inizio è comunque promettente, avranno tutto il tempo di migliorarsi e rinnovarsi, ma soprattutto di definire la propria identità. Ad maiora!
