Ecco a voi il riassunto della chiacchierata telefonica che abbiamo fatto con il simpatico Timo Kotipelto, voce dei finlandesi Stratovarius. Di cosa abbiamo parlato? L’uscita del DVD Under Flaming Winter Skies \u2013 Live in Tampere,<\/b> il nuovo batterista Rolf Pilva al posto dello storico Jorg Michael e i progetti futuri suoi e della band. Buona lettura!<\/i>
Ciao Timo! \u00c8 bello risentirti! Iniziamo la nostra intervista\u2026la prima domanda \u00e8: come va?<\/b><\/p>\n
E la prima risposta \u00e8 tutto bene, mi trovo in una cittadina chiamata Savonlinna, qui in Finlandia. Sono contento che il DVD \u00e8 uscito finalmente e tutti noi siamo concentrati sul prossimo album degli Stratovarius. Ma una cosa molto importante \u00e8 che finalmente anche in Finlandia \u00e8 arrivata l\u2019estate; ieri \u00e8 stato il primo giorno veramente caldo. Di solito \u00e8 cos\u00ec freddo qui!<\/p>\n
Tutti i vostri fan sono cos\u00ec contenti per l\u2019uscita di questo DVD (\u201cUnder Flaming Winter Skies \u2013 Live in Tampere\u201d), ma allo stesso tempo un po\u2019 tristi, sapendo che \u00e8 stato l\u2019ultimo lavoro con J\u00f6rg. Questo DVD era gi\u00e0 programmato oppure \u00e8 stato fatto per la sua uscita dal gruppo?<\/b><\/p>\n
Lui ci ha parlato del fatto che dovesse andar via da pi\u00f9 di due anni, ma non voleva lasciare la band cos\u00ec, quindi abbiamo prima completato il giro di concerti gi\u00e0 stabiliti, stavamo in tour con gli Helloween. Dopodich\u00e9 ne abbiamo fatto anche qualcun altro in Finlandia. Quando la nostra etichetta ha saputo che J\u00f6rg di l\u00ec a poco se ne sarebbe andato, ci hanno proposto di fare un DVD live. In realt\u00e0 ci avevamo gi\u00e0 provato due volte. La prima a Milano, nel 2000 o 2002 mi sembra, ma c\u2019\u00e8 stato un problema col direttore, il quale stava essenzialmente prendendo denaro senza mai completare l\u2019opera. La seconda volta invece a S\u00e3o Paulo in Brasile, nel 2005 o 2006, ma l\u00ec abbiamo avuto un problema di post-produzione, ovvero tutte le parti filmate avevano una luce talmente scarsa che era impossibile ricavarne qualcosa. Di nuovo soldi buttati e abbiamo anche pensato che non avremmo mai fatto un DVD!
Stavolta invece abbiamo avuto la possibilit\u00e0 di registrarlo a Tampere con un mio amico come direttore e finalmente ci siamo riusciti. Non avevamo programmato nulla, ma siamo stati cos\u00ec contenti del risultato! Abbiamo anche suonato molti pezzi.
Forse in futuro ne faremo un altro e ci saranno molte altre canzoni non presenti in quel concerto, vedremo.<\/p>\n
Qual \u00e8 il pi\u00f9 bel ricordo che hai di J\u00f6rg, dopo tutti questi anni passati a suonare insieme?<\/b><\/p>\n
Ne ho cos\u00ec tanti\u2026per prima cosa penso che lui sia il batterista pi\u00f9 poderoso col quale abbia mai suonato, una persona affidabile ed un amico. Lui sta ancora lavorando con noi, nella nostra booking agency. Penso che non lascer\u00e0 definitivamente la batteria.
In tour \u00e8 sempre stato di buona compagnia. Forse era un po\u2019 troppo fissato col calcio, diciamola cos\u00ec, haha! Voleva seguirlo ovunque, come un sacco di gente fa.<\/p>\n
Come ci introdurresti Rolf, il nuovo batterista? Com\u2019\u00e8 stato scelto e chi erano i candidati finali?<\/b><\/p>\n
Quando abbiamo saputo che J\u00f6rg stava per andarsene abbiamo prima completato gli show prestabiliti e poi abbiamo iniziato la ricerca. Di certo avevamo gi\u00e0 qualche nome in mente e ci sarebbe piaciuto verificare le varie disponibilit\u00e0, ma poi abbiamo pensato che era meglio fare un\u2019audizione aperta a tutti. L\u2019abbiamo scritto su Facebook e sulla nostra Home Page. Siamo stati veramente sorpresi di ritrovarci con pi\u00f9 di 100 link di provini su YouTube. Non voglio fare nomi ma abbiamo avuto numerosi batteristi molto conosciuti interessati all\u2019offerta. La ragione per cui abbiamo preso Rolf \u00e8 perch\u00e9 si \u00e8 dimostrato il migliore. Un po\u2019 diverso da J\u00f6rg, Rolf \u00e8 molto tecnico, bravo a suonare le nostre canzoni e portato anche per uno stile progressive. Ha ancora quel groove che \u00e8 fondamentale per un batterista. Ed \u00e8 pure finlandese!<\/p>\n
Spero di vederlo presto all\u2019opera quindi!<\/b><\/p>\n
Speriamo di suonare la prossima primavera a Roma o Milano, vediamo!<\/p>\n
Dopo il nuovo DVD ci sar\u00e0 un nuovo album\u2026hai gi\u00e0 del materiale? Che ci puoi dire a riguardo?<\/b><\/p>\n
Bene, non c\u2019\u00e8 cos\u00ec tanto da dire perch\u00e9 non abbiamo ancora suonato insieme le nuove canzoni. Ognuno di noi ne ha composte alcune, ma penso che dobbiamo continuare a farlo. Il piano \u00e8 iniziare a registrare alla fine di quest\u2019estate, forse cominciando ad agosto con la batteria, per poi finire l\u2019album a fine anno.
Forse il tour sar\u00e0 programmato per la prossima primavera. Il problema \u00e8 che attualmente sono cos\u00ec occupato, perch\u00e9 sto finendo di registrare un album di duetto artistico con Jani Liimatainen. Abbiamo quasi finito. Dopodich\u00e9 riprender\u00f2 a comporre con gli Stratovarius. \u00c8 un po\u2019 difficile spiegare come saranno le canzoni, \u00e8 troppo presto; forse qualcuna riprender\u00e0 il nostro stile originale, altre saranno pi\u00f9 progressive, ma vedremo!<\/p>\n
Tolkki, Jari ed ora J\u00f6rg non pi\u00f9 nella band. Forse anni fa immaginavi che sareste stati nella band ancora tutti insieme\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n
Ci sono dei grandi musicisti nel gruppo. Con la musica non sai mai come andr\u00e0. Siamo cos\u00ec fortunati perch\u00e9 abbiamo una carriera lunga alle spalle e moltissime canzoni prodotte. Specialmente l\u2019ultimo tour, con gli Helloween, \u00e8 andato molto bene. Quindi vediamo cosa accadr\u00e0 in futuro.<\/p>\n
Ci saranno nuovi capitoli del tuo progetto solista? Forse anche un tour?<\/b><\/p>\n
Si, ho fatto tre album in passato, poich\u00e9 all\u2019epoca non potevo comporre per gli Stratovarius, Tolkki non lo lasciava fare a nessun altro. Adesso sicuramente \u00e8 tutto diverso. Sono stato abbastanza occupato con gli Stratovarius ultimemente, non ho ancora piani, ma forse in futuro \u2026<\/p>\n
Diverse volte Timo Tolkki ti ha accusato di non essere professionale. Ti senti di dire qualcosa a riguardo?<\/b><\/p>\n
Mi ha biasimato per non essere professionale? Beh, posso solo farmi una risata! Gli auguro il meglio e non voglio rilasciare commenti perch\u00e9 questi non sarebbero positivi.<\/p>\n
Come sta andando la casa discografica da te creata, la High and Loud Records? La riesci a gestire bene visti tutti i tuoi impegni? Qualche progetto a proposito?<\/b><\/p>\n
Non ho in programma nulla per adesso perch\u00e9 prenderebbe troppo tempo e come saprai \u00e8 rischioso far uscire nuovi album. La gente che ascolta musica pop in generale, la scarica da Internet senza comprare niente. Vediamo se in futuro le cose cambieranno e se ci saranno nuove band promettenti. Al momento non avrebbe senso far qualcosa perch\u00e9 sono troppo impegnato.<\/p>\n
Che cosa pensi della scena metal moderna?<\/b><\/p>\n
Penso sia ottima. Non so com\u2019\u00e8 la situazione in Italia, ma in Finlandia la scena metal \u00e8 veramente grande. Stanno emergendo numerose band molto promettenti. Parlo del metal comparandolo ad altri generi, perch\u00e9 secondo me le band che suonano questo genere non sono ossessionate dalle loro case discografiche a produrre qualcosa che sia pi\u00f9 proiettata verso il guadagno che altro. Le band metal possiedono una grande energia e creativit\u00e0 e soprattutto suonano perch\u00e9 vogliono suonare, non c\u2019entra il denaro, \u00e8 per la musica.<\/p>\n
So che sei sempre veramente impegnato, ma cosa ti piace fare quando hai del tempo libero?<\/b><\/p>\n
Dopo quest\u2019intervista mi piacerebbe andare a correre per esempio. Qualche volta mi piace leggere o guardare film. Non ho cos\u00ec tanto tempo libero ma cerco di fare sport perch\u00e9 penso che sia molto importante per un cantante tenersi in forma perch\u00e9 ti rende tutto pi\u00f9 facile, anche cantare. Adesso quindi vorrei farmi una corsa in questa citt\u00e0 che conosco ancora poco. Mi piace stare nella natura, rilassa cos\u00ec tanto!<\/p>\n
La nostra intervista purtroppo \u00e8 quasi terminata. Vorresti dire qualcosa ai tuoi fan italiani?<\/b><\/p>\n
Si, certamente! Per noi i nostri fan italiani sono veramente importanti ed anche per me. Ho cos\u00ec tanti amici in Italia e presto \u00e8 in programma visitare un amico di Roma. Spero proprio che verremo a suonare la prossima primavera, anche se non so nulla ancora. Mi piacerebbe fare un bel metal party, tutti insieme!<\/p>\n

ENGLISH VERSION<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hello Timo! I\u2019m Sabrina from Heavyworlds.com. It\u2019s nice to hear you again. Let\u2019s start with our interview\u2026 How are you is the first question!<\/b><\/p>\n The first answer is that I\u2019m good, I am in a little town called Savonlinna, here in Finland. I\u2019m happy that the DVD is finally out and we are so concentrated on the next Stratovarius album. What\u2019s very important is that summer has arrived in Finland; yesterday it was the first very warm day. Usually it\u2019s so cold here!<\/p>\n All the Stratovarius\u2019 fans are so happy for the new DVD (\u201cUnder Flaming Winter Skies \u2013 Live In Tampere\u201d), but at the same time a bit sad, knowing that it has been the last work with J\u00f6rg. Was this DVD already scheduled or the reason was J\u00f6rg leaving?<\/b><\/p>\n He talked to the band about his departure more than two years ago, but he didn\u2019t want to leave the band down, so at first he wanted to do all the gigs that we promised, we were touring with Helloween. After that we also wanted to do some our own show in Finland. When our record label heard we were doing the last shows with J\u00f6rg, they said us: \u201cWhy don\u2019t you guys do a live DVD?\u201d We tried to do a live DVD already twice. First we tried in Milano. Year 2000 or 2002 I think, but there was a problem with the director, who was basically stealing money and never finishing it. Then, the next time we tried to do it in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, in 2005 or 2006 and there was a problem with the light, some lightning died, the bar was really in the dark, so when we saw this we thought that we spent again money for nothing, thinking: \u201cDamn, we will never do a DVD!\u201d because it never works. But now, when we had the chance to do it in Tampere, with a friend of mine as director, we could finish the product. To be honest, we didn\u2019t really plan this was going to be a DVD, but now we are super happy. It\u2019s a nice memory for the fans, seeing J\u00f6rg still playing in the band. I think I\u2019m very happy with the result, we played a very long set. Maybe in the future we will do another DVD and there will be some other songs we didn\u2019t play in that show, let\u2019s see.<\/p>\n What\u2019s the best memory you have, about J\u00f6rg, after all these years playing together?<\/b><\/p>\n So many good memories\u2026first of all I think he is the hardest hitting drummer I\u2019ve ever played with, a very trustable guy and a very good friend of mine and he is still working for the band, in the booking agency. I think he will not completely stop playing drums. While we have been touring he has always been a nice guy. Maybe too much in the football, let\u2019s put it in this way, haha! He wanted to watch soccer everywhere, as a lot of people do!<\/p>\n Can you introduce us Rolf, the new drummer? How has he been chosen and who were the final candidates?<\/b><\/p>\n When we knew J\u00f6rg was going to leave the band, we first finished playing the scheduled shows and then we started to search for a new drummer. Of course we had some name in mind that we would like to check out, but we thought it was better to do an open audition. We put it on Facebook and on our Home Page, that we were searching for a new drummer and we have been really surprised because we had more than 100 YouTube links with drummers playing our songs. I don\u2019t wanna say other names but we had very known drummers interested in the job. The reason why we took Rolf was that he was simply the best drummer with whom we\u2019ve ever played. A little bit different by J\u00f6rg, Rolf is very technical and good to play our song and also progressive style. He still has this kind of groove, that\u2019s very important for a drummer. And he\u2019s also from Finland!<\/p>\n I hope to see him soon then!<\/b><\/p>\n I hope we will play next spring in Rome or in Milano, let\u2019s see!<\/p>\n After this new DVD there will be a new album\u2026 do you already have new material? What can you tell us about it?<\/b><\/p>\n Well, there\u2019s not much I can tell you because we still haven\u2019t played the songs together. We have been composing, each one of us, some song. I think right now we need to compose a little bit more. But the plan is we are supposed start recording at the end of the summer, maybe in August starting with drums and then finish the album at the end of this year. Maybe in the middle of the next spring there should be a European tour coming up. The problem for me is that I\u2019m too busy actually, because I have been recording an artistic duo album with Jani Liimatainen. We are almost done with it. Then I\u2019ll keep on composing with Stratovarius. It\u2019s a bit difficult to say how the songs are gonna be, maybe some will be traditional, others more progressive, but we will see! I don\u2019t know yet.<\/p>\n Tolkki, Jari and now J\u00f6rg out of the band. Maybe years ago you were imaging the original members still all together\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n There are very good players in the band. With music you never know how it will go. We are so lucky, because we had such a long career with so many songs\u2026especially our last tour with Helloween has been so good. So let\u2019s see what will come up in the future.<\/p>\n There will be new chapters of your solo project? Maybe also a tour?<\/b><\/p>\n Ya, I\u2019ve done three solo albums in the past, the reason why I did these albums was I couldn\u2019t compose for Stratovarius, Tolkki didn\u2019t let anybody else to compose. Now of course it\u2019s a little bit different. It\u2019s been quite busy with Stratovarius lately too. Right now I don\u2019t have any plans, but maybe in the future\u2026 <\/p>\n Many times Timo Tolkki blamed you for being not professional. Do you feel to say something about it?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n He blamed me for not being professional? Well, all I can do is to laugh about these comments. I wish him all the best and I don\u2019t wanna make any comment because it wouldn\u2019t be positive.<\/p>\n How\u2019s going on with your personal label, the High and Loud Records? Can you manage it well, being so busy with Stratovarius? Any plans about it?<\/b><\/p>\n I don\u2019t have any plans to release something new, because it takes so much time and as you might know it\u2019s a very risky business to release albums. People (pop fans) are most of all downloading music from the net. They don\u2019t buy anything for their selves. Let\u2019s see in the future if things change and if there will be some new promising band. Right now it doesn\u2019t make any sense because I\u2019m too busy.<\/p>\n What do you think about the metal scene, nowadays?<\/b><\/p>\n I think it\u2019s something very good. Don\u2019t know how\u2019s it in Italy, but in Finland it\u2019s very big. Many good promising bands coming up, I think it\u2019s quite strong. I am talking about metal music most of all, compared to the other genres. At least metal bands are trying to compose good songs, not like a product of a record label. In the metal bands there\u2019s still a big energy, creativity, they do it because they wanna play, it\u2019s not about the money, it\u2019s about music.<\/p>\n You are very very busy, but what do you like to do when you have some free time?<\/b><\/p>\n After this interview I\u2019d like to go running, sometimes I read books, watch movies. I don\u2019t have so much free time but I try to do sport. I think it\u2019s very important for a singer to be in good physical conditions, it\u2019s easier for you to sing. Right now I\u2019m gonna go running in this town, I came yesterday and I don\u2019t know it so much. I love to be in the nature, it relaxes so much!<\/p>\n Our interview is almost over unfortunately. Would you like to say something to your Italian fans?<\/b><\/p>\n Yeah, sure! Italians are very important for Stratovarius and also for me. I\u2019ve so many friends in Italy and I plan to visit soon one friend in Rome. Hopefully we can come back to play next spring, but I don\u2019t know anything yet.
