Durante questa rovente giornata di fine luglio, noi di HW abbiamo avuto il piacere di fare una chiacchierata con i Sonata Arctica, abituati al grande freddo finlandese ed in quest\u2019occasione alle prese con le temperature africane della Capitale. Abbiamo incontrato prima Elias, Marko e Tommy<\/b>; poco pi\u00f9 tardi anche il frontman Tony Kakko<\/b>, che avevamo gi\u00e0 intervistato telefonicamente poco tempo fa (leggi qui l’intervista<\/a>). Stavolta l’abbiamo incontrato di persona. Vediamo cosa ci hanno detto\u2026<\/i><\/p>\n

Ciao ragazzi, da HeavyWorlds! Come state?<\/b><\/p>\n

Molto bene! Qui tutto ok, oggi ci siamo fatti una nuotata perch\u00e9 fa veramente caldo, mentre ieri siamo stati in giro per Roma per vedere un po\u2019 la citt\u00e0\u2026<\/p>\n

Quali sono le sensazioni per il vostro concerto di stasera qui a Roma?<\/b><\/p>\n

Il sound-check \u00e8 stato molto positivo, speriamo di avere un sacco di gente stasera qui per noi. Non sappiamo ancora quanti biglietti sono stati venduti ma in Italia abbiamo sempre un pubblico scatenato!<\/p>\n

Come sta andando questo grande tour?<\/b><\/p>\n

Il tour vero e proprio arriver\u00e0 a novembre, per ora stiamo suonando soprattutto nei festival… quindi aspettiamo per vedere come va<\/p>\n

Ho ascoltato \u201cStones Grow Her Name\u201d e l\u2019ho trovato cos\u00ec vario \u2026potrei dire che secondo me ogni canzone ha uno stile del tutto diverso dalle altre. Che mi dite a riguardo?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ci sono diversi tipi di canzone, come nel precedente album. Questo \u00e8 composto da qualche ballata e canzoni pi\u00f9 heavy\u2026tutte molto orecchiabili\u2026pensiamo ci sia un buon equilibrio ed una sorta di nuovo sound.
<\/b><\/p>\n

In particolare \u201cCinderblox\u201d \u00e8 un pezzo \u201ccountry-metal\u201d! Molto interessante. Com\u2019\u00e8 nata l\u2019idea?<\/b><\/p>\n

Elias, Marko, Tommy:<\/u> Tony \u00e8 arrivato con questa canzone quando stavamo ancora decidendo cosa mettere nell\u2019album. Il brano era valido e divertente. Era proprio Tony a dire: \u201dMa no, questo \u00e8 troppo per l\u2019album!\u201d e noi: \u201cInvece nooo! Deve andare nell\u2019album, \u00e8 molto bella!\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tony:<\/u> E\u2019 iniziato tutto pi\u00f9 per gioco, ho iniziato a suonare un po\u2019 con un banjo e alla fine avevo una canzone. Ovviamente con questo strumento lo stile \u00e8 molto sul bluegrass; aveva bisogno di un testo adatto e dunque avevamo pronto un pezzo country. Mi piace molto, \u00e8 fantastico, mi fa sorridere ogni volta che lo ascolto e non manca mai dalla set list dei Sonata Arctica, lo suoniamo ogni volta!<\/p>\n

Quale canzone sentite pi\u00f9 vostra?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAlone in heaven\u201d e \u201cOnly the broken hearts\u201d sono molto belle, ma pure \u201cI\u2019ve a right\u201d\u2026 e \u201cCinderblox\u201d!<\/p>\n

Quella \u00e8 la canzone-jolly!<\/b><\/p>\n

Certo!<\/p>\n

Lo stile della band \u00e8 cambiato molto durante tutti questi anni. \u00c8 mai stato influenzato da qualche altro gruppo?<\/b><\/p>\n

Pensiamo che all\u2019inizio sia stato influenzato da band come Stratovarius, ma anche Devin Townsend, Queen e musica folk finlandese o qualcosa del genere!<\/p>\n

Che ne pensate dell\u2019uso eccessivo dei suoni creati col computer invece di strumenti reali, durante il processo di produzione?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00c8 tutto abbastanza finto. Noi non li usiamo cos\u00ec tanto, forse solo sintetizzatore e qualcos\u2019altro per le orchestrazioni. Usiamo anche strumenti veri come banjo, violino\u2026.sicuramente questi suoni creati artificialmente sono sempre molto validi, ma pensiamo che sia una cosa positiva non farne un uso esteso.<\/p>\n

I giochi olimpici sono appena iniziati\u2026qual \u00e8 la vostra disciplina preferita?<\/b><\/p>\n

Non stiamo seguendo cos\u00ec tanto, comunque… mmm… tiro del giavellotto ed i 100 metri!<\/p>\n

Vi piacerebbe essere tra gli artisti della prossima edizione del 70000 Tons Of Metal? Che pensate di questo festival?<\/b><\/p>\n

Almeno l\u2019ultima volta (2011) \u00e8 stato grandioso, sarebbe bello andarci nuovamente, \u00e8 stato cos\u00ec divertente! Eravamo 40 band, tutti cos\u00ec felici, bevendo birra, ridendo\u2026che figata! Il prossimo anno potrebbe essere spassoso tornare.<\/p>\n

Molti testi dei Sonata Arctica sono cos\u00ec belli, come ad esempio in \u201cWhite Pearl Black Oceans\u201d. Quand\u2019\u00e8 che ritieni una storia o un fatto meritevole di essere raccontato nelle vostre canzoni? Quali sono gli elementi che ti convincono?<\/b><\/p>\n

Tony:<\/u> Quando questa mi tocca in qualche modo, mi fa sentire qualcosa, se mi rallegra o rattrista, sar\u00e0 una canzone che posso solo sognare e sperare faccia provare alle altre persone lo stesso che fa provare a me. Non so, ci sono molte persone e alcune di loro possono capire la canzone nella mia stessa maniera mentre altre no, ma rimane tutto cos\u00ec bello perch\u00e9 questa \u00e8 la cosa principale nella musica: tutti possono adoperare le loro esperienze, chi sono\u2026 perch\u00e9 tutte le canzoni riflettono in maniera differente, quasi come uno specchio che mostra ogni persona da una prospettiva diversa; dunque queste canzoni possono essere come degli specchi. Non dico mai a nessuno esattamente per cosa sia stata scritta una canzone, perch\u00e9 ciascuno la vede giustamente a modo suo. Se alcuni pensano che una determinata canzone sia sulla guerra, potrebbe essere. Se qualcun altro invece pensa che sia sul tema della pace o altro, ha ragione pure lui.<\/p>\n

Avete mai pensato ad una collaborazione artistica in particolare con un’altra band\/cantante metal? Con chi vi piacerebbe lavorare?<\/b><\/p>\n

Elias, Marko, Tommy:<\/u> Steve Vai e\u2026 se volessimo registrare qualcosa sarebbe coi Metallica\u2026sono grandiosi!<\/p>\n

Tony:<\/u> Con chi? Bene! Sarebbe carino lavorare ancora con Tarja (ex Nightwish). Sicuramente sarebbe anche molto bello cantare con qualcuno che sia wow, una grande rock star!<\/p>\n

Ad esempio?<\/b><\/p>\n

Come Steven Tyler! Ha ha! So che probabilmente da questo mix uscirebbe qualcosa di orribile, ma sarebbe fantastico! E poi\u2026loro non sono cantanti ma con ciascuno dei Queen sarebbe un grande onore, avere la possibilit\u00e0 di lavorarci insieme! \u00c8 cos\u00ec divertente incontrare ed imparare da gente nuova, ci sono un sacco di altri cantanti in giro, cos\u00ec bravi e professionali. Ogni volta che canti con altre band o cantanti \u00e8 una situazione nuova, loro meravigliosi e fantastici e poi io! Ha ha! Sono aperto a tutte le idee possibili se hai qualche suggerimento, mi hanno gi\u00e0 chiesto delle collaborazioni ma sfortunatamente in questo periodo non ho il tempo necessario\u2026<\/p>\n

Ok, la nostra intervista \u00e8 finita, ma \u00e8 stato un piacere! Vorreste mandare un saluto personale a tutti i vostri fan?<\/b><\/p>\n

Elias, Marko, Tommy: <\/u>Ciao! Speriamo che il concerto vi piaccia, se non potrete esserci ci sar\u00e0 un\u2019altra data a Milano, durante il tour europeo vero e proprio! A presto!<\/p>\n

Tony:<\/u> Sono contento di essere tornato a Roma, dopo 12 anni, perch\u00e9 l\u2019ultima volta \u00e8 stata nel 2000, \u00e8 fantastico essere qui ed anche a Milano sar\u00e0 bello. Un po\u2019troppo caldo per me, in questo periodo! Sono un tipo invernale, mi piace cos\u00ec tanto l\u2019inverno, hehe!<\/p>\n

Very good! It\u2019s being pretty good here, today we had a swim because it\u2019s really hot and yesterday we had a really nice day in Rome, we went around for a sightseeing\u2026<\/p>\n

What are your sensations about your concert, tonight in Rome?<\/b><\/p>\n

The sound check turned out really good, we are hoping to have a lot of people tonight. We still don\u2019t know how many tickets have been sold, but in Italy we always have crazy audience.<\/p>\n

How\u2019s going on this great tour?<\/b><\/p>\n

The big tour is coming in November, right now we are playing in festivals most of all. Let\u2019s wait to see\u2026<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve listened to \u201cStones grow her name\u201d and I\u2019ve found it so various, I mean \u2026 I could say there\u2019s a different style for each song of the album. What can you tell us about it?<\/b><\/p>\n

There are many kind of songs, like in the preceding album as well. This one is composed by few ballads and heavier songs\u2026quite catchy songs. We think it\u2019s a good balance in the album and a sort of a new sound.<\/p>\n

\u201cCinderblox\u201d in particular sounds like country metal! Very interesting song. How did the idea come out?<\/b><\/p>\n

Elias, Marko, Tommy:<\/u> Tony came up with this song, we were still deciding what to put on the album. The song was so good and funny. Tony was the guy saying: \u201cNo, this is too much for the album!\u201d All the others said: \u201cNooo, this is gonna be on the album, it\u2019s very good!\u201d.<\/p>\n

Tony:<\/u> It started more as a joke, I started to play around with this banjo and I had a song. Of course when you have this banjo you believe the stuff can go on like bluegrass style; it needed the lyrics to go with and then we had a sort of a country song. I like it a lot, it\u2019s fantastic, it makes me smile every time I hear it, it\u2019s always on Sonata Arctica\u2019s set list, we play it every time.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the song you feel more yours?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cAlone in heaven\u201d and \u201cOnly the broken hearts\u201d are so good, also \u201cI\u2019ve a right\u201d\u2026 and \u201cCinderblox\u201d as well!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the jolly song!<\/b><\/p>\n

Yep!<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s style has changed a lot during all these years. Did some other band influence it?<\/b><\/p>\n

We think Stratovarius in the beginning, but also Devin Townsend, Queen and Finnish folk music too or something like that!<\/p>\n

What do you think about the use of computer sounds instead of real instruments, during the production?<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s quite fake. We don\u2019t use it that much, just maybe synthesizer and something else for the orchestrations. We also use to have real instruments like banjo, violin\u2026 of course, you can use fake sounds and they sound pretty good, but I think it\u2019s a positive thing if you don\u2019t use it so much.<\/p>\n

Olympic games have started\u2026what\u2019s your favourite Olympic sport?<\/b><\/p>\n

We haven\u2019t been following so much, but\u2026mmm\u2026javelin and 100mt!<\/p>\n

Would Sonata Arctica like to be part of the 70000 Tons Of Metal\u2019s bill next year? And what do you think about this festival?<\/b><\/p>\n

At least last time (2011) was really super cool, it would be nice to go there again, it was a lot of fun! We were 40 different bands, everybody drinking happily beer, smiling\u2026kind of crazy! Next year could be funny going again.<\/p>\n

Many Sonata Arctica\u2019s lyrics are so beautiful, like in \u201cWhite Pearl Black Oceans\u201d for example. When do you think a story deserves to be told in the lyrics of your music? What are the elements that convince you? <\/b><\/p>\n

Tony:<\/u> If it touches me somehow, makes me feel something, makes me happy or sad, a kind of song that I can only dream and hope that other people will feel the same I do. I don\u2019t know, there are a lot of people and they can understand the songs in the way I do and also people who see in a different way, but it is all beautiful and this is the great thing about music: that everybody can apply their own experiences, them selves basically, what they are, all the songs reflect differently you know, a mirror shows every person in a different way and these songs can be like mirrors. I never tell anybody definitely what one song is about, because everybody is right, if some people think a song it\u2019s about war, it can be. If someone else thinks it\u2019s about peace or another thing, it\u2019s alright anyway.<\/p>\n

Have you ever thought about doing an artistic collaboration with another metal band\/singer? With whom would you like to work?<\/b><\/p>\n

Elias, Marko, Tommy:<\/u> Steve Vai and\u2026if we would like to record with somebody will be with Metallica\u2026they\u2019re huge!<\/p>\n

Tony: <\/u>Who?! Well! It would be cool doing something again with Tarja (ex Nightwish). Of course it would be great to sing with someone that is like wow, a huge big star!<\/p>\n

Like whom?<\/b><\/p>\n

Like Steven Tyler! Ha ha! I know we would probably mix and all would be a horrible thing, but it would be fantastic! And they\u2019re not singers, but with anyone from Queen would be a great honour, to be able to work with them! It\u2019s fun to meet and learn by new people and there are a lot of great professional singers out there. Every time you are singing together with other bands, or other singers, it\u2019s a little bit a new situation, with a wonderful and fantastic singer and then just me! Ha ha! I\u2019m open for any idea if you can suggest, I\u2019ve been asked to collaborate with other bands, but unfortunately right now I don\u2019t have time\u2026<\/p>\n
