In occasione dell’uscita di “Renascentis”, incontriamo la Gothic Metal band italiana Levania, che ci apre le porte su un mondo in cui l’arte non ha soltanto un volto: musica e letteratura si incontrano in questa nuova produzione, di cui Ligeia, Fade e Richie ci descrivono le caratteristiche.<\/i><\/p>\n

– Ciao e benvenuti su Heavyworlds.com! Siamo felici di avervi con noi. Come state ragazzi?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Ciao!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bene!!!!!! Felicissimi di rispondere a quest’intervista!<\/p>\n

Fade<\/b>: Alla grande!!!<\/p>\n

– Cosa ci dite della vostra storia? Come vi siete incontrati e in che modo avete deciso di mettere su questa band?
<\/b>
Fade<\/b>: Noi ci siamo formati nel 2007. Eravamo 6 tra giovanotti e giovanotte che avevano l’amore comune per il gothic metal. E’ stato facile da subito intraprendere la nostra strada. Ognuno aveva un diverso back ground ma l’idea comune era di fare qualcosa di originale e non essere cloni di nessuno. Penso che ci siamo riusciti, che possa piacere o meno il nostro sound e le nostre canzone non sono facilmente riconducibile ad una band gi\u00e0 conosciuta.<\/p>\n

– E per quanto riguarda il nome? Come avete scelto “Levania”? Ha un significato particolare?<\/b><\/p>\n

Fade: Anche qui, volevamo un nome originale, non il solito nome inglese che hanno tutti. In aramaico LEVANIA significa LUNA. Per noi rappresenta un simbolo di pace, silenzio ma nello stesso tempo inquietante. Questo duplice aspetto, questa “dicotomia” \u00e8 molto ricorrente in noi.  Nei testi, nella musica, nelle immagini, in tutto. In particolar modo tramite l’uso delle voci e dei loro intrecci.<\/p>\n

– Passiamo ora al vostro album uscito recentemente. C’\u00e8 un concept dietro “Renascentis”?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Si, decisamente s\u00ec. Pi\u00f9 che un Concept in realt\u00e0 \u00e8 quasi un libro. Immaginate di entrare in una biblioteca, in un giorno di pioggia, e iniziare a sfogliare libri aspettando che il temporale passi. Immaginate che ognuno di quei libri racconti una storia diversa, con personaggi tanto ben fatti da sembrare reali. Ora, immaginate di aver appena finito di divorare un cospicuo numero di quei libri e… l\u00ec, nella penombra della biblioteca, mentre l’odore dei libri, dell’umidit\u00e0  e un vago restrogusto di muffa vi impregna i capelli e la mente, vi rendete conto che ognuno di quei libri \u00e8 legato agli altri e che i personaggi del primo libro in realt\u00e0 sono anche nel secondo e nel terzo….<\/p>\n

Questo album racchiude tanto di noi, che l’abbiamo scritto.. Io sono debitrice ai libri e alle biblioteche, dove ho passato la maggior parte della mia infanzia… ma anche del mio presente. Sono sempre stata fra i libri e sinceramente, devo molto alla letturatura ai suoi autori e a chi mi l’ha insegnata. In questo Cd, nei testi e nelle grafiche, ritorna tutto questo attraverso un percorso letterario e grafico (ci sono vari riferimenti disseminati in qua e in l\u00e0… e spero tanto che qualcuno li colga!) e anche nella musica, che riprende attraverso le note gli stessi temi. <\/p>\n

– Come mai la scelta del riferimento ad un periodo Rinascimentale? Ha un significato particolare?
<\/b>
Ligeia<\/b>: S\u00ec, il filo rosso che lega tutti i tesi \u00e8 quello della Rinascenza. Si parte dal riferimento pi\u00f9 esplicito in copertina, fino al pi\u00f9 nascosto in simboli e frasi nascosti nel booklet. Sono tutte storie di rinascita e “resurrezione”. Da Lucretia, che rivive liberae attraverso il suo famoso gesto “rinasce”, ai due innamorati di “Needles” che dopo essersi fatti del male in relazioni sbagliate si ritrovano…e cos\u00ec via. Ognuna delle canzoni parla di una rinascita, di una rivalsa nei confronti di qualcuno che ci ostacolava o contro la cattiva sorte. Il messaggio principale che vorrei arrivasse attraverso questo cd \u00e8… Non arrendetevi mai, qualunque cosa accada, tiratevi, rimboccatevi le maniche e ricominciate. Partendo dalla mitologia minore greca(Spiral, Metamorphosis, Lucretia..) fino ad arrivare agli illustri della nostra letteratura contemporanea(Four Season,Writings…) ho cercato di rendere quest’idea. Ho preso in prestito testi e autori non per spocchiosit\u00e0, assolutamente, ma perch\u00e8 non sarei MAI stata capace di rendere quelle idee in modo nemmeno vagamente migliore… Questo filone compositivo non si \u00e8 esaurito, per\u00f2… infatti a breve cominceranno a spuntare ulteriori indizi sul nostro sito, ma non vorrei rovinarvi la sorpresa… <\/p>\n

– “Fratelli, a un tempo stesso, Amore e Morte ingener\u00f2 la sorte”. L’ultima traccia dell’album si apre con delle liriche tratte da Leopardi: qual \u00e8 per voi il senso di questa frase?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Tutta quella canzone gioca sulle quattro stagioni che, a partire dal titolo, vengono riprese anche nella musica.. strizzando l’occhio ad altre stagioni ben pi\u00f9 famose. Nel testo ripercorro la sua vita, come il sentimento dell’amore e della morte abbiano giocato un ruolo sempre forte e, purtroppo per lui, unito in tutte e quattro le fasi. Il rapporto con l’amore nell’infanzia e quindi con la sua mamma, cos\u00ec contrastato, per poi passare a Silvia nella giovinezza, a Fanny nell’et\u00e0 matura per poi arrivare al suo Inverno, in quella camera da cui vedeva le ginestre… in questo modo si ripercorrono grosso modo le 4 fasi della vita di ciascuno di noi… e ho voluto mettere in evidenza come una persona fragile e piagata anche nel fisico, oltre che nell’animo, come lui non si sia mai arreso. Anzi. E’ un autore al quale sono LEGATISSIMA, \u00e8 stato con Dante, uno dei miei migliori amici (S\u00ec, lo so. Ero una secchiona, sono una secchiona. Di quelle prese di mira dai bulli… presente? Ecco.)  Lui \u00e8 stato un “geek” di altri tempi, ma \u00e8 rinato proprio grazie ad alcuni tratti che lo penalizzarono, socialmente, in vita.<\/p>\n

– Quale delle canzoni di “Renascentis” pu\u00f2, a vostro avviso, essere considerata la pi\u00f9 rappresentativa dei Levania?<\/b><\/p>\n

Richie<\/b>: A mio parere “Lucretia”, vi \u00e8 tutto in quel brano, il suono dell’apocalisse intervallato da motivi musicali che richiamano il rondo veneziano, direi che \u00e8
geniale!<\/p>\n

– Potete dirci qualcosa riguardo le vostre modalit\u00e0 di composizione?<\/b><\/p>\n

Richie<\/b>: Quando gli altri propongono un’idea, io la ascolto e cerco gi\u00e0 di immaginarmi gli arrangiamenti di chitarra, i riff ecc… all’inizio metto tutto ci\u00f2 che mi viene sul momento poi cerco di modellare il tutto in modo che abbia un senso e che ovviamente i riff e gli assoli mi divertano e mi soddisfino.<\/p>\n

– Quali sono le vostre influenze e i vostri background musicali?<\/b><\/p>\n

Richie<\/b>: Io ascolto diversi stili di metal e hard rock, da quello americano a quello scandinavo, se c’\u00e8 un arrangiamento o ci sono dei riff che mi fanno venire la pelle d’oca allora \u00e8 ok!<\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Non sembra, ma sono una metallara vecchio stile con anni di militanza al Wacken (rain or shine) alle spalle!!!<\/p>\n

Fade<\/b>: Io di metallaro non ho niente\u2026il bello \u00e8 questo, ascoltiamo cose diverse ma non vogliamo fare cose diverse.<\/p>\n

– State programmando un tour? C’\u00e8 un posto dove vi piacerebbe suonare?
<\/b>
Richie<\/b>: Giappone, sarebbe fighissimo.<\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: S\u00ec, stiamo programmando le date in questi giorni. A Maggio avremo qualche uscita importante di cui non posso ancora dire nulla.<\/p>\n

– Con chi vi piacerebbe lavorare per una futura collaborazione in una canzone o un progetto?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: A me piacerebbe aprire un festival o un concerto dei Within Temptation\u2026\u2026 a Richie di qualche gruppo visual giapponese \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n

– Sappiamo che la realt\u00e0 italiana \u00e8 particolarmente ostica per generi musicali come il vostro. C’\u00e8 qualcosa che vi piacerebbe la vostra nazione fosse in grado di offrirvi?<\/b><\/p>\n

Richie<\/b>: Forse meno burocrazia nell’organizzazione spontanea di eventi organizzata dalle band stesse.<\/p>\n

– Immaginate di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Potete portare con voi solo cinque oggetti. Quali sarebbero?<\/b><\/p>\n

Richie<\/b>: Beh, io porterei una chitarra acustica per esercitarmi, un macete perch\u00e8 di un coltellino svizzero me ne farei poco, e un cellulare satellitare nel caso prenda il segnale, un cuscino e boh, un cavatappi? \ud83d\ude42 <\/p>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Dipende! posso portare cinque persone? no? proprio oggetti…? guuuuu .. allora: la divina commedia. Un telefono satellitare per parlare coi miei amici e chiedere aiuto. Amo da pesca. Coperta di quelle termiche da crose rossa, e … pietra focaia!<\/p>\n

– E’ tutto per ora, grazie per il vostro tempo. C’\u00e8 qualcosa che volete dire ai vostri fan o ai lettori di Heavyworlds.com?<\/b><\/p>\n

– What about your story? How did you meet and in which way did you decide to get together as a band?<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n

Fade<\/b>: The band was formed in 2007. We were 6 young guys with a common love for Gothic Metal. It has been so easy to get on our way.  We had different musical backgrounds, but the idea was to create something original and unique. I think we succeeded, whether it could be enjoyed or not, our songs don’t bring back to any already known band.   
<\/font><\/div>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n
– What about the name? How did you choose “Levania”? Has it got a particular meaning?<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n

Fade<\/b>: Same here: we wanted some original name, different from the ordinary English name that everybody have. It comes from Aramaic and it means “Moon”. It represents a symbol of peave, silence and at the same time something scary. This double appearence, this dichotomy is recurrent to us: lyrics, music, images, everywhere. Especially in the weaving of the voices.<\/p>\n

– Let’s get to the album you recently released. Is there any concept behind “Renascentis”?
<\/b>
<\/font><\/div>\n
Ligeia<\/b>: Yes, of course. More than a concept, it is a story. Just imagine to get in a library, during a rainy day, and then to start reading some books waiting for the storm to end. Then imagine that every single book tells a different story, with characters that seem so real. Finally imagine to have just finished reading many of those books and..there, in the gloom of the library, while the books’ smell, the wet air and the mold ones soak your hair, you realize that every single book is linked to the others and that the characters you have in the first one are also the second, the third books ones…
This album has a lot of us who have written it..I owe a lot to books and libraries, where I spent a big part of my life.. and my present. I’ve always been among books and really, I owe so much to literature, authors and those who taught me to it. In this Cds all of this comes back in lyrics and images, through a literary and graphic path (there are some references left here and there.. and I really hope someone will be able to get them!) and also through music, which brings those themes to notes.<\/font><\/div>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n
– Why did you choose a the Renaissance time? Has it got any particular meaning?
<\/b>
Ligeia<\/b>: Yes, the red thread that links all the lyrics is the Renaissance. From the most explicit reference that’s in the cover, to the most hidden one in symbols and lyrics that are hidden in the booklet. They are all stories of reborn and “resurrection”. From Lucretia, who relives, releases and “revives” through her famous movement, to the two lovers we meet in “Needles”, who get back together after being hurt by wrong relationships..just like that. Every song talks about a rebirth, a redraft against who hindered us or bad luck. The main message that I’d like to give with this Cds is.. to never give up, no matter what happens, just pull, roll up your sleeves and start over again. Starting from the Greek mithology <\/font>(Spiral, Metamorphosis, Lucretia..) and reaching the best part of our contemporary literature <\/span>(Four Season,Writings…), I tried to make this idea. I borrowed lyrics and authors absolutely not for snooty, but because I wouldn’t ever be able to make those ideas in a better way…<\/span>This genre of composition is not exhausted , but … soon you’ll be able to find short further clues on our site , but I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise…<\/font><\/div>\n

– “Fratelli, a un tempo stesso, Amore e Morte ingener\u00f2 la sorte”. The last track of the album opens with Leopardi’s verses: what’s the meaning of this lyric?<\/font><\/b><\/div>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: The whole song is based on the four seasons, from the title to the music..winking at other season that are most known. In the lyrics I retrace Leopardi’s life, how the feeling of love and death ruled always with power, unfortunately, in all four phases. Love relationships began during childhood with his mom, so countered, then moved to Silvia during his youth, and then to Fanny during his maturity, to get to his Winter, in the room where he saw the broom..just like this you can retrace roughly four phases of everyone’s life… and I wanted to highlight how a fragile person who’s wounded in body and soul as he was, never gave up. Indeed. He’s an author to whom I am particularly attached, as it was with Dante, one of my best friends (yes, I know. I was a nerd, I’m a geek. One of those targeted by bullies..you know? Here I am.) He was an old geek but he revived thanks to some traits that penalised him socially during his life.<\/p>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n

– In your opinion, which song of “Renascentis” can be considered the most representative of Levania?<\/font><\/b><\/div>\n

Richie<\/b>: I think “Lucretia”, there’s everything in it. The sound of apocalypse, with musical motives that recall to Rondo Veneziano, I’d say that’s brilliant!

<\/b><\/font><\/div>\n

– Could you tell us something about how the writing process works for you?<\/font><\/b><\/div>\n

<\/font><\/b><\/div>\n
Richie<\/b>: When someone else share an idea, I listen to it and try to imagine guitar arrangements, riffs ecc…I first put in all that I get in that particular moment, and then I shape everything to give it sense, with funny and satisfying riffs and solos.<\/font><\/div>\n

– What are your influences and your musical backgrounds?<\/b>

<\/b><\/font><\/div>\n

Richie<\/b>: I usually listen to Metal and Hard Rock, from the American to the Scandinavian one, if there’s some arrangement or riff that gives me goosebumps, then that’s ok!<\/p>\n

<\/font>Ligeia<\/b>: Even if it doesn’t seem, I’m an old style metalhead with years spent at Wacken(rain or shine) before!!!<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n

Fade<\/b>: I have nothing metal..that’s the best thing, we listen to different thing but we want to do the same.<\/font><\/div>\n

– Are you planning a tour? Is there any place where you would like to play?
<\/b>
<\/font><\/div>\n
Richie<\/b>: Japan, it would be awesome.<\/font><\/div>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Yes, we’re planning dates in these days. We’re having some important outcome that I can’t talk about in May.<\/font><\/div>\n

–  Who would you like to work with as a future collaboration for a song or a new project?
<\/b>
<\/font><\/div>\n
Ligeia<\/b>: I’d like to open some festival or a Within Temptation concert….Richie would like to open some Japanese Visual band’s one \ud83d\ude09 <\/font><\/div>\n

– We know that Italian reality is particularly difficult for musical genres like yours. Is there anything you’d like your country would be able to offer?<\/b><\/p>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n

Richie<\/b>: Maybe less bureaucray for the bands in the organization of events.<\/p>\n

<\/font><\/div>\n

– Imagine you had to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you. What would they be?<\/b><\/p>\n

Richie<\/b>: Well, I’d bring an acoustic guitar to practice, a machete ‘cause a Swiss boxcutter wouldn’t fit, a satellite mobile if it could get the signal, a pillow and hum, maybe a corkscrew? \ud83d\ude42<\/font><\/div>\n

Ligeia<\/b>: Maybe! Could I take five people? No? Just things? guuuuu…well: Dante’s “Divina Commedia”. A satellite mobile to talk to friends and get help from them. A fishing hook.  A thermal cover and…a flint!!<\/font><\/div>\n
