\n– Il vostro nuovo album, “Argia”, \u00e8 uscito qualche giorno fa. E’ veramente un buon disco, il vostro migliore. Come ho scoperto, Argia significa “luce”, giusto? Come mai avete scelto proprio questo nome per l’album?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Grazie mille! S\u00ec, Argia significa “luce” o “pulito” in Basco. Questo titolo riflette in qualche modo come ci sentiamo ora. Gorka ed io siamo dovuti ripartire da zero quando gli altri membri hanno lasciato la band. E’ stata veramente dura all’inizio, ma siamo riusciti da soli a scrivere nuove canzoni, trovare nuovi membri e suonare a qualche live in solo un anno.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
E’ per questo che l’album si chiama cos\u00ec, in riferimento alla luce in cui abbiamo trovato di nuovo i nostri percorsi, dopo i brutti momenti che abbiamo vissuto.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
La copertina \u00e8 stata disegnata da Stefan Heilemann, di nuovo. E’ un artista fantastico e cattura sempre l’essenza di ogni band e del loro album in modo molto veloce. Seguendo la stessa idea, la copertina rappresenterebbe la nostra rinascita, dopo lo sprofondamento. La luce \u00e8 l\u00ec che guida il nostro cammino e l’ancora esprime l’idea di sicurezza e forza. L’espressione sulla sua faccia \u00e8 anche quella di una combattente. Mi piace anche l’umore trasmesso dallo scenario, che esprime serenit\u00e0 dal mio punto di vista ed \u00e8 esattamente quello che stiamo provando ora.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
– Siete stati sempre paragonati agli Epica e ascoltando questo lavoro, posso dire che \u00e8 impossibile paragonarvi a loro da ora in poi. Intendo dire, \u00e8 un ottimo album con elementi che son solo vostri. E’ ok con l’influenza ma non percepisco pi\u00f9 elementi alla Epica, come li sentivo, invece, nei lavori precedenti. C’\u00e8 un motivo per il cambiamento di sound?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Onestamente, non abbiamo mai voluto sembrare musicalmente come gli Epica e non sappiamo che cosa esattamente appaia come una loro influenza e non come influenza di altre band symphonic metal nei nostri lavori precedenti. <\/div>\n
Ci piace la loro musica ma la nostra influenza non viene da loro. Gorka e io veniamo da un campo di musica classica e metal, mischiavamo gi\u00e0 questi elementi quando suonavamo nella nostra band precedente, i Dragon Lord, e questo era nel 1998 quando gli Epica ancora non esistevano.
Li abbiamo scoperti dopo aver fondato i Diabulus in musica e quando abbiamo scoperto che usano grandi cori e orchestra, abbiamo contattato Ad, perch\u00e8 non ci piaceva lo stile del mixaggio effettuato in Spagna.
Comunque, certo \u00e8 che entrambe le nostre band suonano symphonic metal e anche che usiamo entrambi orchestra e cori, quindi \u00e8 normale trovare similitudine quando suoniamo lo stesso stile. Lavoriamo con gli stessi elementi, quindi non c’\u00e8 stato un cambio intenzionale del sound. Suppongo che il fatto che sia Ad (che \u00e8 un nostro carissimo amico) che Sascha siano stati coinvolti nella produzione del nostro primo album abbia portato ad alimentare questa idea, ma questo \u00e8 stato solo con “Secrets”, gi\u00e0 con “Wanderer” non lavoravamo pi\u00f9 con loro.
Volevamo un suono pi\u00f9 “duro” ed \u00e8 per questo che abbiamo contattato Jacob Hansen per fare il mix e dirigere il lavoro su “The Wanderer” e abbiamo lavorato con lui di nuovo per “Argia”. D’altro canto \u00e8 anche vero che le altre nostre principali influenze (che devo dire sono pi\u00f9 caratteristiche dei Diabulus In Musica) sono maggiormente presenti in Argia: la “Early Music”, la folk e suoni ambient\/electronic, forse \u00e8 anche per quello che suona un po’ diverso. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
E’ stato molto naturale. E’ iniziato quando i nostri compagni di band hanno lasciato. Quando io e Gorka abbiamo deciso di andare avanti, mi son sentita come se avessi un sacco di cose da raccontare, quindi l’ispirazione \u00e8 venuta davvero velocemente. E’ stato diverso dai nostri lavori precedenti, dato che questa volta ero la compositrice principale e dopo Gorka e io abbiamo lavorato insieme per gli arrangiamenti. Potrei dire che quest’album \u00e8 stata come una terapia, ci sono tanti sentimenti dentro ed \u00e8 sempre stata anche la prova che possiamo continuare da soli. Ora abbiamo tre nuovi membri e penso che potranno contribuire con le loro grandi idee sin da ora. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Quando ho composto questa canzone, sapevo che il testo sarebbe stato in spagnolo dato che la canzone parla della situazione attuale in Spagna. La canzone \u00e8 dedicata a tutte le vittime della crisi politica e economica (e anche crisi dei valori) nel nostro paese. Ho subito pensato ad Ailyn per farle cantare la canzone con me, perch\u00e8 siamo diventate amiche e siamo entrambe spagnole. Inoltre, abbiamo voci diverse che si completano tra loro molto bene, quindi le ho chiesto se le avrebbe fatto piacere prendere parte alla canzone. Lei ama un sacco la band, quindi ha accettato subito e io sono stata molto felice di avere la sua bellissima voce in una delle nostre canzoni.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Grazie, anche io penso che sia la traccia pi\u00f9 drammatica dell’album, molto vicina al teatro musicale in realt\u00e0! E’ per questo che avevo bisogno di una voce veramente speciale per questo duetto. Volevamo una voce maschile versatile che potesse dare alla canzone quel tocco da “musica teatrale”, anche da opera. Thomas \u00e8 un cantante eccezionale, ha cantato tante variet\u00e0 di stili, dal classico al metal, quindi era il candidato perfetto. L’ho contattato e gli ho mandato una demo grezza della canzone. Ero davvero contenta quando ha accettato e mi ha detto che gli piacevano veramente sia la canzone che la mia voce! E’ stato un onore per me cantare con lui!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
E’ difficile da dire, anche perch\u00e8 abbiamo lavorato allo stesso tempo alla composizione e agli arrangiamenti di canzoni diverse quindi non \u00e8 facile ricordare quale ha richiesto pi\u00f9 tempo e quale meno. Ricordo che alcuni dettagli di Maitagarri richiesero un po’ di tempo e forse una delle pi\u00f9 veloci \u00e8 stata Inner Force.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Canto da quando me lo ricordo. Mia madre era direttore d’orchestra di un coro di bambini quindi andavo alle prove e imparavo a memoria tutte le voci finch\u00e8 non sono cresciuta e non ho iniziato a cantare l\u00ec pure io. All’et\u00e0 di 8 anni, ho iniziato a imparare teoria musicale e il flauto. Studiavamo anche canto da camera allo stesso momento, ma quando sei bambino non \u00e8 facile imparare una tecnica di canto dato che la tua voce si sviluppa in modo diverso, quindi \u00e8 meglio iniziare dai 16 anni in su. Comunque, queste lezioni erano utili dato che ti aiutano a sviluppare la capacit\u00e0 di ascoltare le restanti altre voci e imparare altre abilit\u00e0 come: espressione, aggiustamenti, accordi. Ho iniziato a imparare canto clasico quando avevo 20 anni e continuo ancora a prendere lezioni. Sento che abbiamo sempre qualcosa da migliorare, la musica \u00e8 un processo di apprendimento che non finisce mai, secondo me.<\/p><\/div>\n
\nVa da b2 a C#6, ma non si tratta tanto di quanto alto o quanto basso la tua voce possa andare, ma di dove la tua voce \u00e8 pi\u00f9 piena o dove ti senti a tuo agio; posso cantare solo nelle note estreme della mia estensione solo quando provo o mi riscaldo, non nel mio cantare naturale.
Riguardo all’estensione, all’inizio ero riconosciuta come soprano lirico, ma comunque, io non mi son sentita mai a mio agio in quel repertorio d’opera. Due anni dopo ho iniziato a studiare con una nuova insegnante e lei mi ha detto che probabilmente avevo un colore di mezzo soprano: non c’\u00e8 grande differenza nel timbro, ma da quando ho iniziato a lavorare nel repertorio da mezzo soprano, ho cominciato a sentire meglio la mia voce, per cui ora sto lavorando come un mezzo soprano. <\/p>\n
– Quali sono le tue influenze musicali principali?<\/b><\/p>\n
\nSon cresciuta ascoltando dalla musica classica a quella metal, ma di certo non sono state le influenze principali che ho avuto, dato che sono una grande amante della musica. Sono sempre stata interessata alla musica internazionale, per esempio, considero la musica come uno dei pi\u00f9 importanti aspetti culturali delle persone, la musica ci dice tante cose su di noi e le nostre radici, \u00e8 un’inestimabile eredit\u00e0. Amo anche la “Early Music” per lo stesso motivo ed anche perch\u00e8 la sua spiritualit\u00e0 \u00e8 cos\u00ec toccante.<\/p>\n
– Com’\u00e8 lavorare e essere in tour come unica donna nella band? Ci sono dei pro e dei contro?<\/b><\/p>\n
Non trovo dei pro o dei contro nella band dato che siamo tutti amici a prescindere dal genere.
I contro vengono da al di fuori della band perch\u00e8 sfortunatamente ci sono ancora persone nella scena del metal che sembra non stiano vivendo questo secolo. Sono molto sensibile agli argomenti sul genere e ci sono ancora dei piccoli dettagli che le persone dovrebbero considerare come “normali” come per me la prova che le donne ancora non sono considerate allo stesso modo del genere maschile.<\/p>\n
– Ci sono stati dei momenti divertenti con i membri della tua band di cui ti piacerebbe parlarci? <\/b><\/p>\n
Ce ne sono stati tanti ma non penso che dovrei condividerli ahaha! Direi che ogni momento in cui suoniamo qualcosa di divertente succede. Credimi, in tour devi avere a che fare con tante cose strane e persone…
– Sei mai stata nel nostro paese? Se s\u00ec cosa ti \u00e8 piaciuto e cosa no e dove sei stata? Se no, dove ti piacerebbe andare?<\/b><\/p>\n
\nNon ancora! Ed \u00e8 una cosa che ho in mente di fare da un sacco di tempo ma non ho ancora trovato il momento giusto. Vorrei visitare un sacco di posti l\u00ec. Da un lato, essere un’amante della storia, ci sono tante citt\u00e0 artistiche e storiche e luoghi che amerei vedere; dall’altro, essendo anche un’amante della natura, ci sono anche un sacco di panorami e piccoli villaggi da visitare, dal Mediterraneo alle Alpi. Sicuramente qui spenderei un po’ di giorni per fare qualche arrampicata o un po’ di trekking!<\/p>\n
– Immagina di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Puoi portare con te 5 cose. Quali sarebbero e perch\u00e8?<\/b><\/p>\n
Le persone le posso contare come cose? ahaha non ne ho idea, sono veramente pessima a pensare a situazioni ipotetiche, sono pi\u00f9 una ragazza da montagna che da spiaggia comunque, quindi spero che non mi capiti mai. Comunque sia, credo che mi porterei il kit di sopravvivenza, quindi non \u00e8 una risposta molto originale: coltello, accendino, corda, coperta..

Welcome for the first time on Heavyworlds.com, we are very glad to have you here. How are things going?<\/b><\/p>\n Hi! Our pleasure! \ud83d\ude42 Fine thanks!<\/p>\n – Your new album, “Argia”, came out a few days ago. It’s a very good work, maybe your best one. As I’ve found out, Argia means “light”, right? Why did you choose this name for the album?<\/b><\/p>\n Thanks a lot! Yes, Argia means \u201clight\u201d or \u201cclear\u201d in Basque. This title somehow reflects how we feel now. Gorka and me had to start from scratch when the other band-members left. It was very hard at the beginning, but we both alone managed to write new songs, find new band-members and play some live shows in only one year. That’s why the album is called like this, referring to the light we found in our paths again after the bad moments we lived.<\/p>\n – And what about the cover artwork? Is there any particular meaning of it?<\/b><\/p>\n The cover was designed again by Stefan Heilemann. He is a fantastic artist and he always catches the essence of each band and album very fast! Following with the same idea, the cover would represent our reborn after the sinking. Light is there guiding our path and the anchor express the idea of security and strength. The expression on her face is the one of a fighter too. I like also the mood of the scenery, it expresses serenity in my view and this is exactly how we are feeling now.<\/p>\n – You have always been compared to Epica and listening to this work, I could say that’s impossible to compare you guys to them anymore. I mean, this is a great album with elements that are only yours. It’s ok with the influence, but I can’t feel Epica in it as I felt in the previous works. Is there any reason for this change of the sound?<\/b><\/p>\n Honestly, we have never pretended to sound like Epica and we don’t know what is exactly what sounds like them and not like other symphonic metal bands in our – How did your creative process work for “Argia”?<\/b><\/p>\n It flowed very natural. It all started when our band mates left the band. When Gorka and me decided to go on I felt I had many things to tell, so the inspiration came very fast. It has worked very different from our previous releases, as this time I have been the main composer and then Gorka and me have worked together on the arrangements. I would say this album has been like a therapy, there are many feelings inside it and it has also been the proof that we can continue alone. Now we have three new members and I think they can contribute with great ideas too from now ahead.<\/p>\n – There is a collaboration with Ailyn from Sirenia. You girls sung in spanish. Is there any reason for this? How was working with her?<\/b><\/p>\n It was very nice! The song where Ailyn is singing is called \u201cFuria de Libertad\u201d. When I composed this song I knew the lyrics were going to be in Spanish as the song talks about the Spanish situation nowadays. The song is dedicated to all the victims of the political and economical crisis (and also crisis of values) in our country. I immediately though about Ailyn to sing this song with me because we became friends and we both are from Spain. Besides, we have different voices that complement each other very well, so I asked her if she would like to take part in this song. She likes a lot the band, so she immediately accepted and I was very happy to have her beautiful voice in one of our tracks!<\/p>\n – There’s also a duet with Thomas Vikstrom in this album which I really love, so dramatic, epic and tragic. How was working with him?<\/b><\/p>\n Thank you, I also think is the most dramatic in this album, very close to music theatre actually! That’s why we needed a very special voice for this duet. We wanted a versatile male singer who could give to the song that “music theatre” touch, even operatic. Thomas is an amazing singer, he has actually sung a wide variety of styles from classical to metal, so he was the perfect candidate. I contacted him and sent him a rough demo of the song. I was so excited when he accepted and he told me he really liked the song and my voice! It has been such a honour for me to sing with him! I cannot choose one because each song has its specific therapeutic function on me \ud83d\ude09 I mean, each song express a very different feeling from the other, so depending on my mood I would choose one or another.<\/p>\n – Which one was the easiest to write? And which one the most difficult?<\/b><\/p>\n It’s difficult to tell also, because we worked on the same time on the composition and arrangements of different songs so it’s not easy to remember which one took more or less time. I remember the last details of Maitagarri took some time and maybe one of the fastest was Inner Force.<\/p>\n – Zuberoa, how did you start to sing and how did your singing study develop?<\/b><\/p>\n I sing since I can remember. My mother was a children choir conductor, so I used to go to the rehearsals and learn all the voices by heart until I grew up and started to sing there too. When I was 8 I started to learn music theory and flute. We also studied chamber singing at that time, but when you are a child is not easy to learn singing technique as your voice develops very different, so it’s better to start from 16 or so. <\/p>\n Anyway, those lessons were useful as you develop the capacity to listen to the rest of the voices and learn other abilities: expression, tuning, binding… I started to learn classical singing when I was around 20 and still continue taking lessons. I feel we always have something to improve, music is a never-ending learning process in my view.<\/p>\n – What about your vocal range? <\/b><\/p>\n It goes from B2 to C#6 but it is not about how high or low you can go, but about where your voice sounds richer or you feel more comfortable. I only sing in my extreme tones when practising or warming up, not in my “regular singing”. Regarding the fach, from the beginning I was classified as a lyric soprano, however, I never felt comfortable in that opera repertoire. Two years ago I started to study with a new teacher and she told me I was probably a coloratura mezzo-soprano, there is not a big difference in the timbre, but since I started to work on the mezzo repertoire I started to feel my voice much better, so I’m working on as a mezzo now.<\/p>\n – What are your main music influences?<\/b><\/p>\n I’ve grown up listening to classical music and metal, but of course they are not the only influences I have, since I’m a big music lover. I have always been very interested in World music for example, I consider music as one of the most important faces of people’s cultures, music tells many things about ourselves and our roots, so it’s an invaluable heritage. I also love Early Music because of the same reason and also because the spirituality on it is so touching. <\/p>\n – How is working and being on tour as the only female in the band? Pro’s and contro’s?<\/b><\/p>\n I don’t find any pros or cons inside the band as we are all friends no matter the gender. The cons come mostly from outside the band because unfortunately there are still many people in the metal industry that seems are not living in this century. I’m very sensitive about gender issues and there are still some small details that people still take as \u201cnormal\u201d that for me are a proof that women aren’t considered as equals yet.<\/p>\n – Are there any funny episodes that happened with your band members that you would like to share with us?<\/b><\/p>\n There are many, but I don’ think I should share them haha! I would say that every time we play something funny happens. Believe me, on tour you have to deal with many weird things and people\u2026 <\/p>\n – Have your ever been to our country, Italy? If yes, what do you love the most and what not and where have you been? If not, where would you like to go?<\/b><\/p>\n Not yet! And it is something I have in mind since a longtime, but still haven’t found the right moment. I would like to visit many places there! On the one hand, being a historian there are many artistic and historical cities and sites I would love to see. On the other hand, being also a nature lover there are many awesome sceneries and small beautiful villages to see too, from the Mediterranean to the Alps. Here I would stay for a few days to do some climbing or trekking for sure!<\/p>\n – Imagine to run off to a desert island. You could take only 5 things with you. What will they be and why?<\/b><\/p>\n Do people count as things? Hahah I have no idea, I’m very bad on imagining hypothetical situations. previous albums neither. We like their music, but our influence doesn’t come from them. Gorka and me come from the Classical music field and metal, we actually mixed those elements already when we played in our previous band “Dragon Lord” and that was back in 1998 when Epica didn’t exist yet. We actually discovered them after we have founded Diabulus<\/span> in Musica and as we saw they also used big choirs and orchestra that’s why we contacted Ad, because we didn’t like the mix testes we had done in Spain. Anyway, of course we both bands play symphonic metal, therefore, we both use orchestra and choirs, so it is normal to find similarities when we are playing the same genre. We still play with the same elements, so there hasn’t been any conscious change of the sound. I suppose that the fact that Ad (who btw, is a very good friend of us) and Sascha were involved in the production of our first album also helped to feed that idea, but this was only with Secrets, with the Wanderer we didn’t work with them anymore. We actually wanted a harsher sound and that’s why we contacted Jacob Hansen to mix
and master “The Wanderer” and have worked with him again with Argia. On the other hand, it is true that other of our main influences (which I would dare to say are more unique of Diabulus<\/span> in Musica) are more present in Argia: Early Music, folk and ambient\/electronic sounds, so maybe that’s the reason why it sounds a bit different.<\/p>\n
– What’s your favourite track of the album?<\/b><\/p>\n
that would never happen to me! Anyway, I suppose I would take the typical survival set, so not very original answer here: knife, lighter, string, blanket…
