We spoke with vocalist Damna about the creative process behind the saga, the challenges of keeping a consistent narrative, the desire to break musical boundaries, and what lies ahead for the band. Here’s everything you need to know about the end, and the new beginning, of this mythic journey.

Hi Damna, welcome to Heavyworlds.com, it’s a pleasure to have you here with us. How are things going? How are these promotional days going in view of the release of the new album?

All good, all very good, thank you. We just came back from Pagan Fest, a tour that kept us busy for about five weeks. So let’s say we’ve been trying to recover from this big effort for a month and a half now. However, we had the chance to work a lot on the promotion of the new record: a lot of interviews, also thanks to the new label we’ve been working with for this album, which is really doing a great job. So, in the last few days, we’ve been focused on this.

Speaking of the new album “Reader of the Runes – Luna”, we’ve arrived at the third chapter of this saga that started in 2019. For those who might come across this interview for the first time and don’t know the whole saga, could you briefly summarize what the main events of the previous chapters are, so that they can fully grasp the essence of this new record and new chapter?

Yes, of course. First of all, as you said, in 2019 the first chapter of this trilogy came out, with which we began from the idea of creating a concept album. But then the project got a bit out of hand, and in the end, we needed three full records to develop it properly.

So, in the first chapter, “Divination“, briefly, the main events are these: we are faced with a mysterious figure who suddenly arrives in a sort of village. There’s no precise timeline, we deliberately kept it vague ,but this figure, called the Reader of the Runes, begins to make predictions about the future for the villagers. In the first album, we focus on eight of these characters: each one goes to the Reader of the Runes to have their future read. The eight songs of the album tell exactly the visions that the Reader has for each of them. They are dark, ominous visions.

In the second chapter, “Rapture“, released in 2023, we realize that those visions come true. Each character meets their fate, because the events foretold actually happen, they become real.

With the third chapter we reach the central point of the story: we discover the causes, the reason why all this happened. In the second record, we had started to understand that these events were coming true perhaps not by pure chance, but by the will of the Reader of the Runes himself. It’s not clear whether he simply foresaw them or actually manipulated everything so they would happen, pulling the strings like a puppeteer. In the new album, then, we go deeper: we find out why everything happened, we explore the past of the characters, and finally we understand how they’re all connected to one another. We’ll understand what happened and why these events affected them in particular.

Can we expect new places or new characters also in “Luna”?

Yes, definitely. There’s a character who wasn’t present in the first two chapters and whom we actually introduced in the digital single released between the second chapter and this new one, namely in the song “Ethel.” That track was specifically meant to introduce this figure, who becomes central in “Luna“. We clearly understand this from how the story develops in this third chapter.

How much did you have to work on the consistency of the story compared to the previous chapters? Were there moments where you had to solve continuity issues or rewrite parts of the story because the overall picture didn’t fit?

Yes, absolutely. It was probably the most complex part, especially considering the need to align the lyrics and the narration with the music, with what we were composing. We were writing a story, yes, but at the same time also three albums that, by our choice, had to work as standalone records. We wanted them to be enjoyable even though they are concept albums. So no to too many intros, instrumental-only tracks, or other elements that create atmosphere but can weigh down the listening experience. Our goal was that each album could “live on its own.”

From a narrative consistency point of view, yes, there were several moments where we had to stop and reflect, especially because there are eight characters tied to a central figure, and in the third chapter another key figure is added. Integrating everything, especially digging into one of their pasts, wasn’t easy at all. One thing that helped us a lot was the fact that we wrote the lyrics and music of the second and third chapters at the same time. The first chapter, instead, was written separately, and we stopped there. During the Covid period, we had time to work calmly: write, revise, check, prepare pre-productions… This allowed us to have a much clearer and broader vision of the story, and how to divide the songs between the two chapters.

The title “Luna” evokes a dark, dreamlike, mysterious imagery. What is the symbolic and narrative meaning of the Moon in this album? Is it connected to a specific character or event?

Yes, the word Luna is directly tied to a specific character: the new figure introduced in this chapter. It’s also the name by which this girl is known in the story. Her name is Ethel, but everyone calls her Luna, both because of her physical features, she has very pale skin, and because, as you said, she evokes a mystical, almost supernatural aura. She’s a very unique character, who appears in the past of the protagonists, as if she comes from an undefined, distant place, maybe not even real. Her presence changes the dynamics between the characters, and as the story goes on, we understand more and more about her role and her impact.

The album seems to balance moments of great epicness with darker, more atmospheric sections. How did you work on this alternation, and how important was it in creating the right mood for the album?

Well, yes, the themes of the story definitely helped us a lot in shaping the darker, more melancholic parts, as well as the more epic ones. We needed musical solutions that would allow us to fully express what we were telling. That’s something we’ve encountered throughout the entire trilogy. Musically speaking, we have many influences within the heavy metal world: ranging from ‘90s melodic and power metal, to death and black metal from the same period. All of that is part of our background. There wasn’t really an effort to force anything, in fact, it was perhaps easier to give free rein to these influences, but to do it with balance, without going too far off track. The story also helped us with this: to stay true to our sound, which we’ve already declared with The Pagan Manifesto. We don’t want to betray the identity of our sound, but rather expand its boundaries. And the narrative gave us the perfect opportunity to do that.

I’m really satisfied with the result, because it managed to bring out that epic and dark side that I personally love in music, especially on an atmospheric level, for what it can evoke. The story guided us in this, and we’ll definitely treasure that for the future.

What was the biggest challenge in composing and recording the album compared to the previous two chapters?

Well, since, as I told you, we wrote Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 together, we had the chance to record the drum tracks, which is usually the most annoying part (laughs), at the same time. So when we went into the studio for Chapter 2, at that moment we recorded the drum tracks for both the second and third chapters. So that was something we had already taken care of, and when we returned to the tracks for Chapter 3, it was a huge relief, because that work, which is quite demanding , was already done. So I’d say that the recording of this third chapter was perhaps the easiest, the most relaxed. Also because everything was already prepared, the pre-productions had been ready for years, for a couple of years by now, all the tracks were clear, all the lyrics were written, so from that point of view it was much more peaceful. That’s actually what I’d always hope for when going into the studio: everything ready, you already know exactly what you need to do, the ideas are clear, which, due to time constraints, you often don’t manage to achieve or struggle to do.

And what’s your favorite track from the album and why?

Oh, these are the tough questions… It’s something that constantly changes, and to be honest, it’s been a while since I listened to the full album, because, after you finish recording and mixing it, you go through a kind of rejection phase, right? You’ve listened to it 700 times already, you just can’t take it anymore. The only songs I’ve listened to recently are the singles, mainly because we shot the videos and everything…

Surely, as I often say, this album has two souls, two well-defined souls that go hand in hand with the story. The first soul is the more melodic, carefree one, which in the narrative develops the characters’ past. And with that, I think we ourselves opened a kind of, how can I put it, gateway into our own past, back when we were younger, when we started playing music. So there are a lot of references to our past, but they came out completely naturally. That’s one side of the album, and I believe that “Gone Epoch” is perhaps the most striking example of it. It’s also the song we chose as one of the singles. As soon as we recorded the pre-production, it was one of those tracks that hit me the most, almost on an emotional level, because it felt like something we would have written during the time of our first album.

The other soul, which is perhaps more melancholic, more sorrowful, slower, darker, carries tracks that, like we were saying earlier, are a bit more epic, a bit heavier, a bit darker indeed. And from that part of the album, maybe “On These Haunted Shores” is the song I like the most, because it touches a lot of shades of our sound that I’m really attached to, and it culminates in this epic chorus that’s definitely one of the most interesting moments in that section of the album.

Runes are the central element of this saga, after all, it’s Reader of the Runes. How much time did you spend back in the day researching historical sources, studying runes, etc., to make the concept as authentic as possible?

A lot. I mean, we already had something within us, otherwise it would’ve been difficult even to start with such an idea. But yes, we definitely did a fair amount of reading, especially focused on the more spiritual interpretation of runes. And we had to, because first of all, we couldn’t have written about something we were unfamiliar with. For the sake of coherence, and out of respect for ourselves and for those who would read or have read this story, it was necessary. And yes, that helped us a lot, even though the story itself contains only a few references. We didn’t want it to become a treatise on divination or rune reading. But there were definitely aspects that had to be respected and understood before we could get started.

Have you ever thought about publishing maybe a graphic novel or a book with more visual artwork about the story, the saga, I mean?

Yes, that would definitely be a really interesting thing. In the limited editions, especially in the latest one, we actually included a book that retraces all the events a bit, where we explained in more depth what’s going on. Because obviously with lyrics you can’t be that didactic or narrate in detail everything that’s happening. So we developed some additional notes and included them in this book, which also contains some illustrations. It’s not a real book, not a proper narrative, but it’s more like a collection of notes.

One cool thing is that there are some fans who are actually working on a role-playing game based on the story, based on Pathfinder as the system, and they’re developing an expansion inspired by Reader of the Runes.

That’s awesome, I’ll definitely check it out, I’m super curious! Speaking of live shows to promote the new album, have you already thought about any special stage setup for the tour?

Well, we have tons of ideas, but the problem is always… there are always two big issues: one is budget, and the other is logistics. So it’s always hard to scale down the ideas you have about what you’d like to do and then bring them to a more practical, real level. We’ll definitely do something, we’re just trying to figure out what’s actually feasible and what’s not, because for us it’s always important to extend our music to a visual and stage dimension as well, starting with how we present ourselves. So we’ll try to put something together, hoping that logistics will allow it, because that’s always the toughest part. When you travel, when you maybe have to catch a flight, it’s always very difficult to carry bulky things or things that need to be dismantled, etc. But yeah, we’ve got some ideas and we hope to make them happen.

This is the final chapter of the saga. If you could play the entire saga in a single evening, would you do it?

It would be interesting… it would also be very long…

How would you imagine it, aside from the length?

It would be amazing to rent a theater or a historic venue and try to do as much as possible on a visual level. Because yes, as we were saying before, the albums, while the songs can be taken separately and still hold their own, it would be fantastic to do something where you go from the first to the last track and travel through the whole course of the story. I don’t know how feasible it would be, but it would definitely be fantastic. We’ve certainly talked about maybe doing shows mostly based on this trilogy… and who knows, who knows, let’s see.

Okay, so for the setlist, since the songs can stand on their own, if you will, you’re thinking of mixing tracks from the first, second, and third chapters for the upcoming tour dates, I imagine?

Yes, definitely. Like always, we don’t forget the old classics, at this point we’ve got almost 30 years of history, so I guess we can call them classics. They’re songs that are kind of mandatory at this point. I mean, when fans come to see us, they always request them. So yeah, we’ll mix those in with songs from the last three albums.

Alright, after so many years in your career, do you still have any dreams left to fulfill in music?

Oh God, you know, I’ve always taken things as they came, without ever expecting anything. So I wouldn’t really know how to answer you. I’m not sure if I’d say I still have dreams tucked away, because honestly I don’t expect anything. For me, what’s happening and what we’re doing with the band is already at a level I never imagined. And by “level” I mean the live shows, releasing albums… it’s all something I never expected, and I’ve taken it with surprise, and obviously joy. So I’d say no, whatever else might come will only make me happy.

And if you hadn’t become a musician, what do you think you would’ve done instead? Did you have any alternate plans, considering that mindset of not expecting things and just going with the flow? Would you have had no plans and just seen what happened?

That’s a good question… I don’t know if I’ve ever really asked myself that. For sure, my passions have always revolved around music and heavy metal, so I think I would’ve done something related to that, though I don’t know exactly what. I really enjoy reading and writing too, so maybe… who knows, I might’ve focused more on writing. Yeah, something like that, probably.

Have you ever thought, even just vaguely over the years, about recording a solo album with a completely different sound? I know you’ve sung with Hell In The Club, who already have a different vibe, but I mean something even further removed from both Elvenking and Hell In The Club.

Well, yes, the desire and will to do something more in the extreme metal realm is definitely there, and I’m sure I’ll make it happen at some point, time permitting, of course. So yeah, that’s something I do want to do. I don’t think it’ll be a “solo” album, though, because that’s not the kind of thing I’d seek out as a listener or a fan. I don’t think any solo artist album has ever really satisfied me… well, maybe a few, but I believe that it really takes a band effort to create something that truly interests me. So yeah, definitely something in extreme metal, but with other people.

Alright, fingers crossed it happens eventually. That was the last question, thank you so much for this chat, it’s been a real pleasure. Is there anything you’d like to say to Elvenking fans or our readers?

First of all, huge thanks to you for the interview. Hmm, what to say? On April 11, our latest work comes out, it’s the third chapter in this long story we’ve been developing for the past six years. If you’d like to check it out, April 11 is the day to do it. We’ve also launched a new webshop, so you can already pre-order it now. And as for the future, we’ve been talking about this a lot recently, we can’t wait to get back to writing a “regular” album. An album without the constraints or narrative structure that we had to follow for this trilogy. The story was set, we had to move within that circle. Now it’s going to be a new and exciting thing for us to go back, after six years, to writing a “normal” record, free of those boundaries. That’s definitely the next step for Elvenking.

[ITA]

Come vanno queste giornate promozionali in vista dell’uscita del nuovo album?

Tutto bene, tutto molto bene, ti ringrazio.

Sarebbe interessante, sarebbe molto lungo…
