Actually, it wasn’t exactly a promotion of the new album, but we played a couple of new songs, and they seem to have been well received. Now, in the next few weeks, the real promotion will start!

“Ghosted” marks a new chapter for Trick or Treat, with a mix of power metal and horror atmospheres. How did the idea of combining the more ironic and carefree side of your music with this horror aspect come about?

It came after “Creepy Symphonies“, where we had already hinted at these atmospheres in some songs. It worked well, and I think now we are a bit better identified with this sound, we stand out in the sea of power metal bands out there. I think this distinctive feature in our sound can tell us something more, so we pushed a bit more on that side, but always with an ironic streak. Let’s say, not exactly horror, but more with little chills, rather than real horror!

Was there a specific moment when you decided “okay, this will be our new concept,” meaning the horror theme?

Yes, let’s say that the very first songs we wrote with Luca, the first ones we did, were exactly “Ghosted” and “Bloodmoon“, which have a pretty horror vibe. Then he wrote another song with a bit of this mood, and we also wrote “Dance With The Dancing Clown“, which falls into this same mood. We liked how it was coming, so we decided to keep that line. However, we also included more traditionally power metal songs, like “Make A Difference” or “Polybius“, which have nothing to do with horror, they are more in the “Trick or Treat old style“.

Speaking of the tracklist, did you choose a precise sequence for the songs, maybe trying to create a narrative thread, or was it a spontaneous decision?

No, there’s no narrative thread because all the songs are disconnected from each other, even if there’s a sort of pop horror culture theme. But we mainly thought about the flow of the tracklist, because in a power metal album usually it starts with a nice speed song. Actually, this time, no, we started with “Craven Road,” which is almost a mid-tempo. The first track isn’t very fast, but it had an intro that transitioned well, in the same key. Then we put “Bloodmoon” right after, so it’s almost an opener. After that, we alternated a bit, placing fast songs next to slower ones to create variation and avoid boredom.

“Evil Dead Never Sleeps” is your tribute to Army of Darkness and the Evil Dead saga. How did you try to recreate the grotesque atmosphere of those films through music?

That’s a track that was written by Guido, completely by Guido, both lyrics and music, and it’s obviously one of his favorite films, I mean, a horror cult classic. But I think it fits very well with Trick or Treat’s attitude, because it’s a horror movie that also has a lot of funny moments. So we liked the idea. It wasn’t planned from the start, actually, the music for “Evil Dead” was already written without lyrics. Then, while thinking about the lyrics, we considered various films that could work, and that one fit well. There’s also a sort of gothic interlude, with epic choirs, where it says something like “your truth is annihilated” or something like that. Thinking about that line, it seemed perfect for that moment, and so Guido wrote the lyrics based on that mood.

On the other hand, “Bitter Dreams,” inspired by Nightmare on Elm Street, how did you play with the melodies and the atmosphere to evoke the nightmare and terror typical of Freddy Krueger?

Yeah, so that one starts out as a ballad, actually, like a lullaby. This track was also completely written by Guido, but it starts like a lullaby that initially throws you off, in the sense that it doesn’t seem like a horror movie, but rather a song that talks about a horror movie. We wanted to give the impression that it’s almost a lullaby that puts you to sleep, and then it kicks in with a more aggressive energy. It also references the main theme from Nightmare, as a tribute, obviously. At the end, there are the little girls’ choirs singing, which are actually the real choirs from the movie, extracted directly. Hopefully no one sues us (laughs).

I know nothing!

So yeah, we put a few easter eggs inside, but the song has a longer outro.

Besides drawing inspiration from horror films, you also took inspiration from video games, like Return to Monkey Island. What pushed you to dedicate a song to that in an album so focused on horror?

Because we were on tour last year, and also a year and a half ago, with Alestorm for a few dates, and we became pretty good friends, especially with Chris. I collaborated with him on his side project outside of Alestorm, called Frøggë. An album didn’t come out, but we did a couple of singles that did pretty well. But it’s not really a proper recording project. We formed a good connection and, spending a lot of time on tour with Alestorm, we thought: “Why don’t we do a slightly more pirate-themed track?” So I said: if it’s pirate-themed, in line with what we do, Monkey Island is one of my all-time favorite video games, doing a tribute to that with Chris would be amazing. So we wrote the song specifically for Chris, thinking of it like writing a song for Alestorm. For us, it was a song we could give to Alestorm and say, “Play it on your album.” But actually, we also added, Luca added some really creepy arrangements, like spooky scales and such, so it became kind of a “creepy pirate” song, which I think is a great mix. So yeah, the whole thing was born around the guest. Usually, you pick the guest once the song is done, but in this case we thought: “What kind of song could we write for Chris?”

Another guest on the album is Adrienne Cowen, how did the collaboration with her come about?

It came about because we were on tour together with Twilight Force. Seven Spires supported Twilight Force on the European tour where Twilight Force were the headliners. Even there, we had already collaborated with Adrienne for the Frozen cover, so we knew each other, even if not in person. But yeah, a month on tour together, we became friends. She’s a very talented person, really a cool person. So we thought, already while we were on tour, I’d really like to record something with her. In fact, on the last Seven Spires album, she wrote two songs. One song where we do an actual 50/50 duet, and another one where I sing a small part. So yeah, two songs where she had me as a guest. So we also wrote a track knowing that she would be on it, so in this case too it was kind of tailored for her. I thought of a more gothic vibe, kind of Kamelot-style, and such, also because Castlevania, even the song itself, is dedicated to Castlevania, another video game. In fact, while we were on tour, she was the one who introduced me to the Castlevania anime series on Netflix. While we were on tour, she showed it to me because it’s really cool, so during the off-days and rest days, I watched it. Actually, the song pretty much covers the first two episodes of the anime, where Dracula marries a human, and then the humans kill Dracula’s wife, and he totally loses it, rightly so. Kind of like that.

This part I missed, I’ll have to catch up on it. Over the years, you’ve collaborated with some big names, but is there still someone you dream of working with, either as a guest or on tour?

On tour, anyone who’s bigger than us in the power metal scene is a work opportunity, we’re always happy to open and collaborate. I’d say Helloween, but in the end, we’ve already toured with Helloween, so that’s covered. There are a lot of bands, but honestly, we’ve already worked with most of the bands we were fans of. Sooner or later, we’ve collaborated with them. We’ve toured with Helloween, Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, so the idols we had as kids, we’ve already shared the stage with them. That doesn’t mean we wouldn’t love to share it again, why not? But in terms of guests, there are still so many. For example, Kotipelto, we invited him years ago, but he couldn’t join due to other commitments. He was supposed to sing on Rabbits’ Hill Part 1, we had offered it to him, but it didn’t happen. Still, he’s a legendary name we haven’t collaborated with yet. As for the others, aside from a few massive names that are kind of out of reach, we’ve already worked with many, so I consider myself very lucky.

Back to the album, this time the artwork was done by you. What were the key elements you absolutely wanted to include on the cover?

With the artwork, I usually try, though not always, to include easter eggs from the songs. I already did this with the Re-Animated cover, not so much with Creepy Symphonies, but on this album, there’s a reference to every track. Some are really hard to spot, hard to find, but there are references for each song. Then, Ghosted really captured the atmosphere. It matched perfectly with the song, which we liked using as the title track, and it’s also short, which we liked. I wanted a one-word title for this album, because we’ve always used compound words or phrases, and Ghosted was perfect. It’s a song that’s really important on the album, both in terms of message and content. It also ties into our stage presence, because we use giant inflatable ghosts, which over the last few tours have become a signature part of our stage setup. So we were able to emphasize that even more, and it all came together perfectly.

The metal world, especially power metal, has always had a strong connection to iconography, fantasy, and sometimes horror. In your opinion, is it still important today to have a clear visual aesthetic, or should the music speak for itself?

Well, music should always be able to speak for itself, because if it doesn’t, and you have a good aesthetic, it’s useless. But today, compared to the past, the aesthetic is much more important, because so much more is shared through images and videos on social media. A band’s identity now comes across much more visually than before. In the past, maybe you’d see a band every three years when a CD dropped, in a magazine interview with a photo shoot, or if they played near your city. Now, if you post online every week, fans see you constantly, so your visual identity has to be… not necessarily there, but usually it’s more polished. This also leads to extremes like “Cosplay Metal” with bands like Twilight Force, who really focus on visuals, or Wind Rose, or many others who emphasize their image as much as their music. To me, that’s not a flaw, it’s an added value when the music has something to say and the image enhances it. When the music sucks, and the image is just surface-level, then it gives nothing to the band. But generally, nowadays, there’s a bigger effort to personalize the visual world of a band, not just the music. It’s not enough to just make music anymore. I mean, if your music isn’t good, you won’t get far, but just making good music isn’t enough either.

Back to Ghosted, you recorded the album with Simone Mularoni, a producer you’ve worked with before. What was it like returning to the studio with him? Was there any specific moment where he made a crucial contribution to the album?

Yes, Mularoni has always made crucial contributions. Pretty much every Trick or Treat album, except one, the The Legend Of The XII Saints one, because he couldn’t follow the production due to the format of releasing a song each month for a year, was produced by him. Since 2005, he’s worked with us. One of the first albums he produced was “Evil Needs Candy Too“, which was our debut, it might have even been his first, I’m not sure, but definitely one of the first. So he knows us inside out and always gives fundamental input. Often we show up at the studio with a song that’s 90% done, but we know something’s missing, some cool arrangement or touch, so we ask his opinion. And whatever he suggests always works, because he’s an external ear to the band. I have my vocal lines, the others play them the way I imagine, but then in the studio he might say, “Why did you choose that note? If you resolve it like this, it sounds much better.”

Was there a funny moment during the Ghosted recordings? Any fun stories?

Not one in particular, it was all generally quite fun. The atmosphere is always super relaxed. This time, like the last few times, the production schedule was so tight, we don’t have that many days in the studio, so we had to work very fast. The fun parts were maybe the lunch breaks, when we’d go to eat at Sara Squadrani’s restaurant, she has a place in Rimini now. So we’d head over to Squadrani’s to eat tortellini…

Nice, nice! I still have to go, I have to visit Saretta at some point. So, if you could go back in time and have a legendary metal singer, who’s no longer with us, sing on one of your songs, who would it be and on which track?

Ronnie James Dio on “Premonition” from Rabbits’ Hill Part 1. That song was written by Cabri, who’s no longer in the band, but it had a kind of Rainbow vibe to it in terms of theme. He also would’ve been perfect on one of the songs about Taurus from The Legend Of The XII Saints, one of those two tracks.

You’ve got a very loyal fanbase in Italy, but you’re also loved abroad. Where have you found the warmest fans outside of Italy? Is there a country where playing live is always a special experience?

Definitely South America. We only played there once recently, but the energy and warmth from the crowd were incredible, really intense and cool. Japan also has a very dedicated fanbase, especially for European metal. We’ve been there twice with Trick or Treat and twice more with Twilight Force, and the shows are always sold out, so it’s always an awesome experience. In Europe, I always enjoy going back to Budapest, Hungary. We’ve had some amazing shows there, even recently. We played at Barba Negra twice in six months, it’s the best metal venue over there. And we even wrote the song “Hungarian Hangover” about our time there, which became quite a hit for the band, it’s one of our most streamed tracks on Spotify. Plus, our booking agency is based in Budapest, so I’m always happy to return.

Has anything unexpected ever happened during a live show? Any on-stage mistakes?

On our most recent tour, we had a short set, only 40 minutes. We play with a click track and pre-recorded keyboard backing tracks, so we have to play exactly in time and stick to the selected setlist. Every night, we’d switch up the setlist a bit, swapping in two or three songs since we weren’t playing super long sets but were revisiting venues we’d played months earlier. One night, we were supposed to play eight songs, I think “Evil Needs Candy Too” was up next, and I announced it on stage. But Dario had forgotten to load one of the tracks into the mixer. So we announced the song, and… nothing happened. We had to skip it. That night we played one less song, and I ended up talking to the crowd a bit longer to fill the time.

After so many years in music, what does making music mean to you today? Has your relationship with your passion changed since the beginning?

Honestly, no, it hasn’t changed in spirit. What has changed is how professional everything has become. In the early years, any excuse was a good one to hop on stage and play, in any condition. Now, of course, there’s a whole team involved, it’s not just us anymore. We usually travel with at least seven people, often eight. There are things to rent every time, upfront expenses in the hundreds, or even thousands, of euros. So everything has to be managed properly, professionally, to put on a great show. But once we’re on stage, or just after the show, the vibe is the same. What’s changed is what happens behind the scenes: you have to plan better, manage the budget, handle logistics. Even something like merchandising, you have to print thousands of euros’ worth of stock before a tour. The investments are totally different now. Everything’s more thought-out, you could say.

Speaking of Twilight Force, it’s been quite a few years since you joined. How are things going? How do you juggle two bands that are so different?

It’s been about 7 or 8 years now, I think. Things are going really well—we’ve had a major lineup change recently, with three new members joining. It was a pretty big shift, kind of destabilizing at first, but it also brought fresh energy and a great new vibe within the band. I’m not involved in songwriting for Twilight Force; Daniel, the keyboardist, handles all of that, and he’s currently working on wrapping up the new album. Recently, we played at 70000 Tons of Metal and ProgPower, and the shows were fantastic. We’ve already got several gigs lined up in the near future.

I saw on social media that you guys played Magic: The Gathering on the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise…

Yeah, we did a Magic tournament where fans could challenge us, in collaboration with Wizards of the Coast. They sent a huge load of booster boxes to the ship, which we ended up taking home after the event, so that was awesome. We spent the whole afternoon playing; over 300 people wanted to challenge us. Not everyone got a chance to play, but the turnout was unexpectedly huge, even for Wizards. No one expected that many people on the cruise to be into Magic, and playing at such a high level, too. We played about twenty matches, and everyone knew what they were doing. It wasn’t like teaching beginners; these were real games. It was such a success that they might want to do it again next year. We’ll see!

On the nerdy side of things, what was the last board game you played?

I mostly play Magic, even competitively sometimes. I love building decks on the spot where everyone’s on equal footing. I don’t play constructed formats much anymore, so mostly I play on Arena. But on April 11, there’s the pre-release for the new Tarkir expansion, I think…

Yeah, the one with the dragons! Quindi ci piaceva l’idea.

No, sinceramente no. È cambiato che è diventato tutto più professionale.
