We caught up with vocalist Yasmine to discuss the challenges of remote collaboration, the inspirations behind their lyrics and visuals, and how the band is shaping its identity in today\u2019s metal landscape.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hello Yasmine and welcome on Heavyworlds.com, it\u2019s a pleasure to have you here. How are the things going so far?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thank you for having us! Things are going great for Face Yourself. We are excited to release our new EP &#8220;<strong><em>Martyr<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; and are currently in the studio for even more music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Face Yourself is a transcontinental project with members from different parts of the world. What have been the biggest challenges in building a sonic identity and creative synergy while working remotely? How do you handle the writing and recording process without being physically in the same place?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We really made it work with time. We actually meet up a few times a year to be all together recording music and writing. We also partner in teams to start the creative process of writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The name &#8220;Face Yourself&#8221; carries a very direct and powerful meaning. Can you tell us the story behind this choice and what it means to you today compared to when you first started?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric came up with the name. I believe &#8220;Face Yourself&#8221; is a lyric from a song he really likes. It&#8217;s funny in a way because I feel like a lot of us have learnt a lot about ourselves through being a part of this band. Working as a team and trying to make it a safe environment for all of us made it easy for us to be ourselves around each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What was the moment that made you say, &#8220;Okay, we want to take this project seriously and bring it to the next level&#8221;? Was there a specific turning point when things started becoming more concrete?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It was right from the beginning. Face Yourself was always gonna be a serious project. All of us have been doing music for a long time and we wanted to have a project that could take us to releasing music we are happy with and getting touring opportunities at some point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong> Which song on the EP took the most time and effort to finalize? And which one came together the most spontaneously?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t really the writing process that was difficult but more the selection of the songs. We usually write a lot of music in advance and with members with different influences, it can be difficult to choose which songs are making the cut. The song that came up very easily was &#8220;<strong><em>Sideration<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;. Everyone really liked this<br>song right away and it was really easy to come up with ideas to finalize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The title of your EP \u201cMartyr\u201d evokes images of sacrifice and suffering. Can you elaborate on the concept behind this title? Who is the &#8220;martyr&#8221;\u2019&#8221; you are referring to within the album&#8217;s context?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s actually based on an artwork that I made. I worked for the film industry as a make-up artist for a few years, and before that I went to school for it. One of my makeup exams turned out to be a personnification of mental health. I asked my friend Florian to be my model, and I made a really dark themed makeup with slime dripping from his head, to show how mental health \u201crots\u201d your brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The EP delves into themes of mental health, vulnerability, and confronting one&#8217;s inner demons. Why was it important for you to explore these topics, and how did you translate them into your music?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to writing lyrics, I usually write with a distance, more on a story telling point of view. But this time I really had to dig deep in some wounds that haven&#8217;t healed yet. Some pain that I decided to not confront actually slapped back at me when I moved to the United States and I decided to use it to write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The idea of cyclic struggles with mental health is central to the album. How did you try to represent this alternation between moments of strength and moments of weakness through your music and lyrics?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It was really easy through the music because when the guys were writing the instrumentals, some of them made me feel very specific emotions and I was able to pair that with some lyrics that I wrote. Some I wrote following the instrumentals, some were lyrics that I wrote more in the form of a poem and<br>that I ended up pairing with the songs later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>You worked with Joey Sturgis for the production of \u201cMartyr\u201d. How was that experience? How did his input shape the album&#8217;s sound?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It was great working with Joey. He is a true professional and understood right away what we were trying to do. He helped us with the selection of the songs for the EP. He also had such great ideas for the style of the sound and the impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>&#8220;Predatory&#8221; explores themes of broken trust and the hidden dangers behind an innocent facade. What inspired you to write this song, and what message were you hoping to convey?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Predatory is actually inspired by a Lady Gaga song called \u201cMonster\u201d. It&#8217;s one of my favorite songs from her. I have a few friends who have sadly experienced getting drugged in night clubs. I feel like every woman knows another woman who has experienced some form of abuse, and it&#8217;s really what the song is about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The lyrics use the imagery of a dance with a stranger as a metaphor for a situation that turns dangerous. Can you tell us more about this symbolic choice?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When I write about difficult subjects, I prefer to write with metaphoric images. It can be difficult to use certain words, and I feel like there are a lot of different forms of pain that people can experience. So even when I have a subject in mind, I like it to be a bit vague so anyone who has experienced pain can<br>relate to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The music video for \u201cPredatory\u201d was directed by your drummer, Eric DiCarlo. What was the vision behind the video concept, and how did you visually translate the song\u2019s meaning?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He has directed all of our music videos so far. Because Eric and I both come from the film industry, we like to come up with ideas together. I came up with the ideas for the lights and colors for the video<br>and he just helped it come to life. We really wanted to have this idea of looking like we are underwater. Then Max Moore ended up doing the edit, and after providing him the lyrics, he added some sharks and water images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What are your plans following the release of \u201cMartyr\u201d? Can we expect a tour or any upcoming projects?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More music for sure, we are currently in the studio recording more. We have tours coming up aswell, and you will see announcements surrounding that soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your journey so far has been marked by continuous growth and ambition. What is the most important piece of advice you would give to an emerging band trying to make a name for itself in modern metal?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Not giving up! It&#8217;s important to do music because you enjoy it, if you enjoy what you write, it will translate though your music and people are gonna relate to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Deathcore has undergone several evolutions over the years, with some bands pushing towards a more modern sound while others remain true to the raw, brutal roots of the genre. Where do you think Face Yourself fits within this spectrum?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the thing about Face Yourself, we are 6 members with very different influences, which gives so much possibilities. We never get bored with what we write cause we have the possibility to explore different styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>That was our last question. Come stanno andando le cose finora?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Grazie per averci invitati! Le cose stanno andando alla grande per i Face Yourself. Siamo molto entusiasti di pubblicare il nostro nuovo EP <em>&#8220;Martyr&#8221;<\/em> e attualmente siamo in studio per lavorare a nuova musica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Face Yourself \u00e8 un progetto transcontinentale con membri provenienti da diverse parti del mondo. Quali sono state le sfide pi\u00f9 grandi nel costruire un\u2019identit\u00e0 sonora e una sinergia creativa lavorando a distanza? Come gestite il processo di scrittura e registrazione senza essere fisicamente nello stesso luogo?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Siamo riusciti a farlo funzionare con il tempo. In realt\u00e0 ci incontriamo alcune volte all\u2019anno per stare tutti insieme, registrare musica e scrivere. Lavoriamo anche in teams per iniziare il processo creativo di scrittura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Il nome &#8220;Face Yourself&#8221; ha un significato molto diretto e potente. Puoi raccontarci la storia dietro questa scelta e cosa significa per voi oggi rispetto all\u2019inizio?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Il nome \u00e8 stato scelto da Eric. Credo che \u201c<strong><em>Face Yourself<\/em><\/strong>\u201d sia un verso di una canzone che gli piace molto. \u00c8 divertente, perch\u00e9 in un certo senso molti di noi hanno imparato molto su se stessi facendo parte di questa band. Lavorare come una squadra e cercare di creare un ambiente sicuro per tutti ci ha permesso di essere noi stessi quando siamo insieme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>C\u2019\u00e8 stato un momento in cui avete detto: \u201cOk, vogliamo prendere questo progetto sul serio e portarlo al livello successivo\u201d? C\u2019\u00e8 stato un punto di svolta in cui tutto \u00e8 diventato pi\u00f9 concreto?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Fin dall\u2019inizio. Face Yourself \u00e8 sempre stato pensato come un progetto serio. Tutti noi facciamo musica da tanto tempo e volevamo avere un progetto che ci permettesse di pubblicare musica di cui siamo soddisfatti e, prima o poi, ottenere l\u2019opportunit\u00e0 di andare in tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Quale canzone dell\u2019EP ha richiesto pi\u00f9 tempo e sforzi per essere finalizzata? E quale \u00e8 nata invece in modo pi\u00f9 spontaneo?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Non \u00e8 stato tanto il processo di scrittura a essere difficile, quanto la selezione delle canzoni. Di solito scriviamo molta musica in anticipo e, avendo membri con influenze diverse, pu\u00f2 essere difficile scegliere quali brani includere. La canzone che \u00e8 venuta fuori in modo molto naturale \u00e8 stata <em>\u201c<strong>Sideration<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>. \u00c8 piaciuta subito a tutti ed \u00e8 stato davvero facile trovare idee per completarla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Il titolo del vostro EP \u201cMartyr\u201d evoca immagini di sacrificio e sofferenza. Puoi approfondire il concetto dietro questo titolo? Chi \u00e8 il \u201cmartire\u201d a cui vi riferite nel contesto dell\u2019album?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c8 in realt\u00e0 basato su un\u2019opera che ho realizzato io. Ho lavorato nell\u2019industria cinematografica come truccatrice per alcuni anni, e prima ancora ho studiato per farlo. Uno dei miei esami di trucco si \u00e8 rivelato essere una personificazione della salute mentale. Ho chiesto al mio amico Florian di farmi da modello, e ho creato un trucco a tema molto oscuro, con slime che colava dalla sua testa, per mostrare come la salute mentale ti \u201cmarcisca\u201d il cervello.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>L\u2019EP affronta temi come la salute mentale, la vulnerabilit\u00e0 e il confronto con i propri demoni interiori. Perch\u00e9 era importante per voi esplorare questi argomenti e come li avete tradotti nella vostra musica?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Quando scrivo i testi, di solito lo faccio con un certo distacco, pi\u00f9 in una modalit\u00e0 narrativa. Ma questa volta ho dovuto scavare in ferite che non si sono ancora rimarginate. Alcuni dolori che avevo deciso di non affrontare mi hanno colpito duramente quando mi sono trasferita negli Stati Uniti, e ho deciso di usarli per scrivere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>L\u2019idea di lotte cicliche con la salute mentale \u00e8 centrale nell\u2019album. Come avete cercato di rappresentare questa alternanza tra momenti di forza e momenti di debolezza nella musica e nei testi?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c8 stato molto facile attraverso la musica, perch\u00e9 quando i ragazzi scrivevano gli strumentali, alcuni di questi mi facevano provare emozioni molto specifiche, e sono riuscita ad abbinarli a testi che avevo scritto. Alcuni testi li ho scritti dopo aver ascoltato le musiche, altri li avevo scritti pi\u00f9 come poesie e poi li ho abbinati alle canzoni successivamente.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Avete lavorato con Joey Sturgis alla produzione di \u201cMartyr\u201d. Com\u2019\u00e8 stata questa esperienza? In che modo il suo contributo ha influenzato il sound dell\u2019album?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c8 stato fantastico lavorare con Joey. \u00c8 un vero professionista e ha capito subito cosa volevamo fare. Ci ha aiutati nella selezione dei brani per l\u2019EP e ha avuto delle idee grandiose per lo stile sonoro e l\u2019impatto delle canzoni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201cPredatory\u201d esplora i temi del tradimento e dei pericoli nascosti dietro una facciata innocente. Cosa ti ha ispirato a scrivere questa canzone e qual era il messaggio che volevi trasmettere?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Predatory&#8221; \u00e8 in realt\u00e0 ispirata a una canzone di Lady Gaga che si chiama \u201cMonster\u201d. \u00c8 una delle mie preferite tra le sue. Ho alcune amiche che purtroppo hanno vissuto esperienze in cui sono state drogate nei locali notturni. Credo che ogni donna conosca un\u2019altra donna che ha vissuto una qualche forma di abuso, ed \u00e8 proprio di questo che parla la canzone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nel testo, l\u2019immagine di un ballo con uno sconosciuto diventa una metafora per una situazione che si fa pericolosa. Puoi parlarci di questa scelta simbolica?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Quando scrivo di temi difficili, preferisco usare immagini metaforiche. Alcune parole possono essere difficili da usare, e penso che ci siano molte forme diverse di dolore che le persone possono vivere. Quindi anche quando ho un argomento preciso in mente, mi piace lasciarlo un po\u2019 vago, cos\u00ec chiunque abbia vissuto un dolore pu\u00f2 riconoscersi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Il video di \u201cPredatory\u201d \u00e8 stato diretto dal vostro batterista, Eric DiCarlo. Qual era la visione dietro il concept e come avete tradotto visivamente il significato del brano?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Eric ha diretto tutti i nostri video finora. Siccome sia io che lui veniamo dal mondo del cinema, ci piace sviluppare le idee insieme. Io ho proposto le idee per le luci e i colori, e lui ha aiutato a realizzarle. Volevamo davvero creare l\u2019effetto di sembrare sott\u2019acqua. Poi Max Moore si \u00e8 occupato del montaggio, e dopo avergli fornito i testi ha aggiunto squali e immagini acquatiche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Quali sono i vostri piani dopo l\u2019uscita di \u201cMartyr\u201d? Possiamo aspettarci un tour o nuovi progetti?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Assolutamente s\u00ec, stiamo gi\u00e0 registrando nuova musica in studio. Abbiamo anche tour in arrivo, e presto ci saranno annunci in merito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Il vostro percorso finora \u00e8 stato segnato da crescita continua e grande ambizione. Qual \u00e8 il consiglio pi\u00f9 importante che daresti a una band emergente che cerca di farsi un nome nel metal moderno?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Non mollare mai! \u00c8 importante fare musica perch\u00e9 ti piace. Se ami quello che scrivi, questo si rifletter\u00e0 nella tua musica e le persone ci si riconosceranno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Il deathcore ha vissuto molte evoluzioni nel tempo: alcune band puntano verso un sound moderno, altre restano fedeli alle radici pi\u00f9 brutali del genere. Dove pensi che si collochi Face Yourself in questo spettro?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Questa \u00e8 la cosa interessante dei Face Yourself: siamo sei membri con influenze molto diverse, il che ci offre tantissime possibilit\u00e0. Non ci annoiamo mai con quello che scriviamo, perch\u00e9 abbiamo la libert\u00e0 di esplorare diversi stili.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Questa era la nostra ultima domanda.
