Hailing from the south of Ireland, sibling duo Steph and Paul have turned personal loss and resilience into a powerful musical world. With their new album “Severed Heart City”, they invite listeners into a journey through darkness, healing, and survival. We sat down with Paul to talk about the album, live energy, and the bond that fuels Greywind’s sound.

Hello and welcome on Heavyworlds Webzine, it’s a pleasure to have you here. We’ve been like the reaction to all the new music we’ve released this year has been incredible. So it’s such a really exciting time right now.

And for those who might be discovering Greywind for the first time, who are Steph and Paul and how would you describe what Greywind is all about?

So we’re from the south of Ireland in a town called Killarney. We’re siblings, we grew up being inspired by like the classic emo bands like My Chemical Romance and Mineral and Saosin. And then we discovered like post-rock like Explosions in the Sky and Caspian. It was always our dream to start a band so, when we formed Greywind a few years ago, we knew what type of music we wanted to create and it’s like people say Irish emo basically. But we love combining post-rock and alternative rock and create something that we feel is new and exciting for people and the reaction has been insane. So we’re really proud.

And as you told me, you grew up in Killarney, a small town in Ireland. How did that environment shape your dreams and also the sound of your band?

Yeah, even like we live right near a castle and there’s mountains and lakes, like it basically looks like Game of Thrones and our band name Greywind is Robb Stark’s direwolf from Game of Thrones. So that’s the name Greywind. I thought about that, but I was like “okay, I’m such a nerd“. You got it. But our music and lyrics are very inspired. We love like beautiful imagery so we try and bring that like into our lyrics. We feel very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, we love being from Ireland and representing and getting to tour like the world. It’s inspired us a lot because like we live in the south of Ireland. It’s all like traditional Irish music. For people here, we’re creating music for aliens. It sounds crazy to them because we’re always inspired by like US bands and stuff. We feel like really cool to represent Ireland in like an Irish scene when there’s not many Irish bands in the emo pop punk scene. We feel very lucky to represent Ireland.

And as siblings, how does your bond influence the way you write and perform together?

Luckily, we grew up loving the same bands, the same movies. We’ve always loved the same things. As soon as we started writing music, it’s just been instant connection, like I know that if I bring something to Steph, that she’ll love it and if she brings something to me, we just get each other. It’s like there’s no oasis moment, like we won’t be fighting or anything like that. We’ve always like got on very well. Even into live, like we’ve always wanted like be a very energetic, fun band to see and we always put on playing shows. Even like last year, we toured the US for the first time and played some sold out shows over there. And just seeing fans crying to our songs and screaming back our lyrics, it was like really special. So it’s nice to be able to do that with your sister and get to tour the world and like live our dreams. I feel very lucky to do that.

And do you ever feel your dynamic as brother and sister gives you strength other bands can’t replicate?

Definitely because I think like even with our career, we’ve been through so many like dark like times, even personal, even in like struggles in the music industry. But I think in music I allow myself to be very like vulnerable. I allow that to be my therapy and I don’t know, it allows me to get out of the darkness.

It’s like the music is your emotional creative part and being positive is your rational one…

Yeah, exactly. It’s weird. Inoltre, così tante delle nostre band preferite suonano in quei festival, come Fall Out Boy e The 1975, quindi è davvero stimolante.

Band come Sigur Rós e Explosions in the Sky e Caspian.
