As the drummer and one of the founders of the band, how do you think this team changed your discography from the beginning?

I don’t think it changes, I mean, of course, it’s a bit of a different album, there’s a few songs that are very different from what we usually do, but I would say it’s a natural progression. It kind of has a little bit of what we do in the last two albums, but also the sound and warmth from the Lotus album. And it’s an album where we get to experiment a lot more, find sounds and different ways of recording and performing.

Maybe it is something I’ve just only felt when listening to the album, but most of the times your albums feel like dialogues between light and darkness. What new dimension of that duality did you want to explore this time with this album?

I mean, our lyrics are always 100% about the adventure of being a human and the ways that you feel and we always go for that. In different terms, we have the relationship between us and society and the relationship between us and other humans. And then, of course, a little bit of an introvert part. I think we’re always within that realm and I don’t know, we try to be as honest as possible, I think we are. And it’s the only way for us to actually write music, I think.

And how did the environment, physical or emotional, in which this album was recorded influence the final result?

We were a lot more in the studio this time. And we were there together for the first time in maybe forever? No, since the second album. So I think a lot of that made more of a cohesive album. And we could be almost recording at the same time, so we could come up with stuff to do together. And it was very entertaining for us, very inspiring.

Can you tell me a track where the instrumental interplay surprised even you during the writing or recording process?

I think the bass surprised me. Just bringing back Stefan, who didn’t play with us in the last two albums. His way of approaching music and his way of playing to my drumming is always very special and extremely groovy. And he has this warm and organic way of playing so when we started laying down the bass tracks, everything just really fell into place and that was probably the biggest shock.

And in your drumming part on this album, what techniques or approaches did you explore that felt new or risky?

I don’t know. The more I play, the more intelligent I try to be when choosing what to do. I’m a very song-based drummer so it’s everything about making the song as good as possible and the vocals come through and the message. And sometimes you don’t even get to play like in “Indifferent” was a song that I wrote and I really loved and I tried drums, but then I realized actually the only thing I’m doing is to make the song worse, so I didn’t get to play. But for me it’s about that. It’s about bringing the groove and being supportive, but just pushing for the song, being supportive to the song and not for myself. I don’t have any needs to be considered a great drummer or show any of my drumming chops anymore.

And how was the dynamic between you, Joel and the rest of the band evolved during the making of this album?

It’s great. We know each other for decades now and we’re really close friends so we work very close to each other and have a mutual respect musically and as human beings. So it would be really weird to have anyone else to record with because when you’re a band like this, it takes all of your life. Everyone is involved, every member of the family. There’s so much going on all the time. So it’s actually a beautiful thing that we get to do this together and that is successful and we get to travel the world and play our music with our best friends.

And did any creative disagreements during the process actually push the album into a better place? I mean, were there any disagreements that were positive for the albums?

I mean, there’s always small issues or small disagreements or different ways of seeing how things should be done in certain parts. And of course, we always tend to listen to each other but that is part of being in a band. You shouldn’t have one guy doing everything. It should have a vision and then everyone should add their ideas because everyone is the best at their instrument. And me as a main songwriter, I cannot play better bass than Stefan or better guitar than Kobi or better keyboards than Lars. So I just kind of make the songs and then expect everyone to chip in and make them better. So those disagreements are something that we count with. Disagreement is a strong word but that is the way that we work so it’s always for the positive, I think.

And “Primal”, the first song, mixes frustration with a sense of hope. Which part of the song was the hardest to get emotionally right during writing or recording?

That’s a tough one but that whole song is just a waterfall of anger. It’s very in your face. And the only thing is you just need to be on that mood to record that song. But you know, it’s easy to get there especially, it’s a very heavy song and the main riff is very driven so as soon as we started playing it, we felt we get in the song to the kind of anger and record it.

And “Discordia” has a very delicate emotional weight. What was also here the hardest part to get right without overplaying or overproducing it?

Well, with those softer songs, it’s all about the character. Because you want to be able to sing all this in a softer way and to be vulnerable without being weak. And that line is very thin. You don’t want people to feel sad about you. You don’t want people just to hear what you say. But you know, Joel is such a great singer, such a professional that we just sit together, him and I, until we find the best way to sing that song to find the correct character and the correct way of approaching the song.

Talking back again about your last tour with Dark Tranquility, is there something you learned from them musically or as people that you will carry into the future?

Not really. I mean, it’s a band that I’ve known for many, many years so we know them. So musically, we know what they do. And we know them and it was just great touring with them. I don’t know if you learn stuff. I think we just enjoy, you know.

And looking back at your musical career, your music journey, what’s something you understand about yourself as a musician today that you didn’t 10 years ago?

Definitely how much I actually love this. How much I actually love touring and writing songs and being a musician. You know, when you’re younger, everything goes so fast and you don’t get the mental peace to sit down and analyze your life so you just do the shows and you’re pissed because you’re at the airport. And then you’re having the best time of your life because you’re on stage. And then it goes so fast. Now you get the time to actually start understanding the amount of how rich your life has been, you know, in terms of being able to live from what you, from your own creativity and to meet so many people that are into the bands where, you know, your music means something to them and get a mountain of friends in different parts of the world. I think that is the main lesson that time has taught us.

And what’s one creative fear you have overcome or one you are still working through?

I mean, overcome just to know that I can write songs. And believing that I always been playing in bands where someone else writes the songs. So to actually take that step was a bit tough. Not tough, but a little bit of fear, of course but now that is gone. And of course, I want to get better. I just want to be a better musician and a better songwriter, especially. Be better at all the instruments that I need to use. And I work towards that goal all the time. This is a job where you never get to settle down. I mean, it’s because you have to. And that is very important, I think, to write the best possible music.

Is there a moment in your career that you would like to redo or a moment you would relive exactly as it was?

I think I would leave everything exactly as it was. I’m happy with my life and with my career and with what music has given to me. So, no, I wouldn’t redo it. At the same time, it would be a dream to go back in time and discover and be the first person to play, for example, Black Sabbath, you know, when nobody heard that. So, every Sunday, Joel and I and the kids go to football.
