We had the chance to talk with her about artistic freedom, storytelling, her fantasy-inspired universe and the emotions behind her latest projects. A deep dive into creativity, personal growth, and the different shades of her musical world.

Good afternoon Fabienne. First of all, welcome on Heavyworlds.com, it’s a pleasure to have you here. How are things going so far as you are also doing some gigs for the summer festivals?

Thank you so much. Things are going really good. We’re releasing new music with Illumishade, which is a lot of fun. It’s really great to enter this new chapter again with a third album coming. We just had a very fun festival in Belgium last weekend. It was nice to kick off the festival season for sure. I can’t wait to play more. We do have some fun festivals coming with Eluveitie. So, really looking forward to the best season of the year.

And you spend years expressing yourself through different musical worlds, from Eluveitie to Illumishade and now also through your solo work. Looking back, what has remained constant in your artistic identity despite all those changes?

Well, that’s an interesting question, actually. So, I mean, what I love about having Eluveitie, Illumishade and now also my solo work, is that I get to discover different eras and different aspects of music and I get to discover myself as a musician again or rediscover or discover new facets of me as well. And I think that’s very important because I guess this is how we grow as humans, as musicians. So I think that is a really big and fun part for me, to explore those different facets through these different projects. But of course, what stays consistent, I guess, is my love for cheesy melodies. I think you can find this in all three. Yeah, I like the emotions, they also stay there. I think you can find these in all three projects, let’s say, that I’m part of. My voice, the sound of my voice and the love for music.

You once said that storytelling has always been at the heart of your relationship with music. What do you think came first for you? The love of music itself or the desire to tell stories?

Oh, the love for music, for sure. Pretty much. Actually, my urge to write my own music, my own words, came pretty late for me. I was already in Eluveitie and there it slowly started. But before that, I also never really considered myself as somebody who really wanted to write because I loved music, I loved singing overall. Most of all, I love to sing. And up until this day, I also love giving my voice to somebody else’s idea or somebody else’s words. I really don’t care about this as long as I can stand behind it because I can immerse myself into this, I’m interested in somebody else’s work. So, for me, I can definitely answer it with the love for music and for singing.

And when you think about the young Fabienne dreaming of becoming a singer after seeing Elton John’s Aida, what part of that dream has stayed exactly the same? And what part turned out completely different than expected?

Interesting question. I would say the lifestyle because I wanted to become a musical theatre singer. And once I saw Aida, I was like “I want to do musical theatre” and I ended up not doing musical theatre so I think the lifestyle is different because we are touring. I mean, musicals also tour. But as I understand, they’re often for a longer time in the same place. I’m lucky I don’t have to do auditions because I think this is what would have killed me if I had been a musical theatre artist. I could not handle this so I’m happy that I have my secure projects.

And I think writing your own music… I think when you’re a musical theatre singer, performer, you don’t do that often, I guesse because they are written and you are interpreting. And here with my bands and so on, I get to play, I get to write big. In Eluveitie, I get to do more Chrigel’s vision but I get to write in the different projects. This, I think, is the biggest difference compared to what I thought I would love to become, which would have been a musical theatre artist which I didn’t. Maybe it’s good. Maybe it’s good. And I don’t have to take dancing classes and acting classes! (laughs)

Talking about Illumishade, it started as a creative project and then it became a fully realised artistic universe. Was there a specific moment when you realised it was no longer a side project but something essential to who you are as an artist?

Well, to be honest, once I started writing the first songs for Illumishade, it was for a master’s thesis because I was still studying music. But I felt in the beginning already that it feels like it’s more than just a master’s thesis or something because I poured everything into it. Of course, it was great to see that the other musicians that I took into the boat felt the same way after we had my master’s thesis gig at school.

We were like “Hey, let’s just continue this path and see where it leads“. And let’s go to the studio and record it. So this came pretty early, actually, my feeling like I want it more than just for this thesis and then put it aside. I felt like it was the first time that I got to write a lot and it felt very liberating to me.

And the band’s music often balances the cinematic beauty with modern heaviness. How do you personally navigate that balance between power and vulnerability?

Well, this whole concept of Illumishade is all about these differences and these contrasts: Illumi for light, shade for shadow, dark. So it’s also what I really love about this in the music that we have these soft parts, we have the heavy parts.I mean, as heavy as we get. We’re not like that heavy compared to others, of course, but within our universe. And I love this contrast and I think exactly this makes the music memorable and makes it stand out in our own way. And it finds its place in our universe like that and I think it’s meant to be that we have these contrasts.

And your latest single “Paralyzed” (interview was done in June) explores the feeling of being emotionally trapped by a love that is gone. Do you think people suffer more from what they lost or from what they imagined that relationship could have become?

Oh, wow. Well, I mean, I don’t think I can speak for everybody because probably it’s very individual. We would need to look at each situation. I think it can be actually both, or maybe together the same, kind of at the same time. But it’s difficult to say. I don’t know. It depends on the situation.

And as you told me before, also these songs combine darkness and tenderness in a fascinating way. Which emotional space feels more natural to you creatively? I mean, in a creative way, in the creative process?

I think I’m this kind of person that likes many things, not only music, but overall. I’m just, I don’t know, I feel I’m quite interested and open-minded. So that’s why it’s always difficult for me to choose something. And same now here. I think it’s difficult for me to say if I love more the melancholic vibe or more the sad vibe to a song. Or I think what happens often when I write is that it gets more like ballad because I compose on the piano. And with my piano skills that I have, it turns out often like a ballad. Somehow it’s just how it goes. But I think then when it goes to the next stage, you can also even make an energetic song out of it and so on. So I would say I can’t really choose but if I would need to choose, I would go maybe for the melancholic vibe.

And how do you decide where an idea belongs? I mean, you have an idea for a song, how do you decide if it belongs to the band Illumishade or to a solo work?

Interesting question. I don’t know because now I wrote the Illumishade songs for this new album. Now we’re already done, more or less done, before I started writing for my solo project. And I wrote with the goal that it’s going to be for my solo project. Now, in the next months, when I will write again, it’s going to be interesting. And I can probably tell you in like three months, but I can’t tell you yet now.

So, I know you can’t tell us more about the new album yet, but what can we expect from this new Illumishade era?

I think we will show a different side again. I think we evolved our sound. The topics of the songs are, though, very much about Illumishade, like a light in the darkness. We’re writing all about these kind of personal things we have to go through. The dark times, the brighter times. So, we’re talking a lot about personal stories and experiences that we have to go through. I think it’s very personal lyrics.

And sound-wise, I think we worked on the catchiness and a little bit of the heaviness, but keep the essence of Illumishade for sure, which for me is the melodies and a bit this magic, this ethereal element to it.

Can’t wait to hear that. You made me really curious.

Amazing. That’s a goal.

Talking about your solo work, “Starveil”, it was the first time you were presenting a complete artistic vision under your own name. Was stepping into a solo identity more liberating or more intimidating?

Both at the same time, I would say. It was sometimes very difficult. I think it’s normal in the process. At some point, you’re super convinced and then you start to doubt everything again. But I think this is kind of needed and it’s normal. But it was, I think, really both at the same time. It was liberating in a way that I could just paint something on a white canvas, let’s say, and whatever felt right to me, to me only. That was very cool. That was fun. And I’m still searching. I mean, I’m working currently now on new songs. It will still take some time, but I have all these doubts and questions, but also passion behind it. So it goes hand in hand maybe at the moment a little bit.

And was there a moment during the writing process when you realised that the song was revealing more about yourself than you originally intended?

Interesting. Well, I mean, I started this with an idea like “Let’s just see where it leads“. I was like “Yeah, it would be cool to have an album” but also didn’t want to put too much pressure on myself. And then it evolved and evolved. And I think the solo work that I did so far is the closest artistically to me that I ever did because I had all the responsibilities and so on. And this makes it very, very close to my heart. And I did not really expect how close it would be to me so I can’t really say if it’s closer than what I expected it would be. But it’s just, yeah, it’s very me, I would say. I’m very happy with how it turned out and can 100% stand behind it.

And one of the most intriguing aspects of your solo work is the presence of a lore, symbolism and even something like a fantasy world. What drew you towards creating an entire universe around these songs?

I’m very inspired by these kind of things. So these symbolisms, this world, I love music that is in a way an escape. I always loved that. I mean, musical theatre is in a way also an escape, right? I love this kind of music. And I love making this kind of music because I love diving into these stories and different worlds. And just forget about this reality here for a while. So it helps me a lot to shape the music into one direction. And it inspires me for more, like “Oh, then I could write about this“. And how would this group of people sound? Or how is the atmosphere in this certain season in this lore and so on? So it inspires me a lot. But yeah, it’s always a question on how to present this for people. And I’m still figuring it out. But definitely the next songs and so on will be playing in that universe. And my goal is at some point that the concert is an experience. You dive into this world and then you get out of it and you’re like “Oh, where am I?” This is my goal. I hope I will reach it someday that I can do this but I think this will be my dream.

And as a songwriter, do you feel more comfortable speaking through fictional characters and metaphors or through direct personal experiences?

I think I like both. But I personally, when I write my own lyrics, somehow I love it when it’s more like about stories, stories about legends or, you know, these mysterious things, a little bit dark and so on.

So at the moment, it might change, but at the moment, I prefer to write in that direction than whatever I went through. I mean, it depends on the project. I’m working on some songs with Vidick from Infected Rain. And there it was very much about some difficult times that I went through in the past but also the music is a bit different. It’s a bit more modern, more raw and the ethereal sounds and the fairytale fantasy touch from my solo project, for me, lead me more towards the storytelling of legends and things.

And you travelled extensively, lived in different countries, studied different cultures and musical traditions. Which experience changed you the most, not as an artist, but as a person?

Interesting. I think every stay in a different country or holidays, or whatever travelling, changed me in a way. But I think what was setting a very important point was when I went for the very first time abroad. I went to study for three and a half months in Copenhagen. And there I think I gained self-confidence. I mean, still, you know, it’s not the best up until now. I think it’s okay. It’s fine. It’s a journey but before that, I didn’t even dare singing in front of other people, really. I was so shy.

And there I gained a lot, which I think was the base that I could build on for my further career. So I would say this, you know, just being away for the first time in my life. I had to speak English. That was also the first time. And so many new singers, friends, experiences. This was, I think, very important that I went there and it changed me a lot.

And how has music helped you understand yourself? Or has it mainly helped you understand other people or equally?

I think music, like writing my own music, showed me my insecurities because, for example, just getting started sometimes is very difficult. Very difficult. And I’m reflecting sometimes, why is it that difficult? And then I realise what the reasons are behind it, you know. What if it’s not good enough? And all these questions, right? And I was getting aware of it now, especially when I did the solo stuff. And I was like, okay, so this is what holds me back sometimes. And this is something I have to work on. So not only in the musical aspect, maybe overall. But it’s good that this is like a mirror showing you what you have to work on. So that was good. It was an important thing that I realised when I was working on my solo album.

Both Illumishade and your solo work seem deeply connected to artistic freedom. What does creative freedom mean to you today, compared to 10 years ago?

Well, I mean, 10 years ago, I was not even writing music, right? That’s right. When I joined Eluveitie, I did not really write music before. I only started writing. I mean, I was having fun. I was composing, but I never finished a proper song, really. Maybe one or two. So I wouldn’t really have considered myself back then as a songwriter. So yeah, 10 years ago, I didn’t write it.

Imagine someone discovering your music 50 years from now, without knowing anything about your life or career. What do you hope they understand about the person behind the songs?

I hope that the music will give them strength, peace, and a little escape. I think this is what I love myself when I listen to music. I like when it gives me something like strength, power, energy. And this is also what I want to give to the people when I write my music so I hope that in 50 years, it’s the same.

And if you weren’t a musician, what do you think you would be doing today?

Crying in a corner (laughs).

That’s a good answer (laughs).

No, I really don’t know.

Ok, don’t worry. Imagine you run off to a desert island. You can take with you only five things. What would they be and why?

I would definitely take sunscreen, because otherwise I would be fucked. Because sunscreen is unfortunately number one, I would say. Especially if it’s in a hot area of the world. Then I would take my sunglasses, because I have very sensitive eyes. It’s very important, so I can actually survive. Then probably a knife. Can I choose a house, so I don’t have to build my own shelter?

Okay, a house.

Oh my God, it’s very difficult. I have three things already, right? Two more things. Okay, so I have sunscreen and sunglasses, a house. Now I need something for food and entertainment. Well, I think I would go for a knife. Or some coconuts and stuff. How to open these? I would go for a knife, it’s always good to have. And then I would go for something entertaining. Oh my God, it’s so difficult. Maybe… So should I entertain myself with a piano or should I take music? Maybe a piano.

Thank you so much for your time, that was the last question. I will leave you now some space to end the interview.

Well, thank you so so much for having me. And thank you for everybody who was reading the interview. I appreciate your time and your interest. And I’m very excited for this year. We have great things coming with all the bands.

E andiamo in studio a registrarlo.

Quindi è sempre difficile per me scegliere qualcosa.

E sto ancora cercando. Voglio dire, attualmente sto lavorando a nuove canzoni.

Ma è semplicemente… sì, è molto me, direi.

E come songwriter, ti senti più a tuo agio nell’esprimerti attraverso personaggi immaginari e metafore oppure attraverso esperienze personali dirette?

E hai viaggiato molto, vissuto in diversi Paesi, studiato culture e tradizioni musicali differenti.

Molto difficile. E a volte rifletto: perché è così difficile?

Ho iniziato a scrivere solo dopo.
