It’s a busy time at the moment, of course. There’s a lot going on every day but it’s all positive in the end so it’s all good.

After “The Wonders Still Awaiting” introduced a new chapter for Xandria, “Eclipse” feels like the moment where this new identity becomes even more defined. From your perspective as the voice of this new era, what do you feel has changed the most between these two albums?

Yeah, that’s a good question. I think this album is a little bit more on point, a little bit more focused. As a whole, it makes a picture that kind of makes sense. “The Wonders Still Awaiting” was a little bit more experimental. At least the second half of it was a little bit more experimental. Now we kind of had the feeling right away of where to go and how to do things. And we still did a lot of diverse things on it, which I love. It’s one of the most important things for me but somehow the whole picture is a little bit more on point. There’s not one song where you’re going to think “Oh, that one, okay, it’s a bit strange“. So I like that as a whole picture. It’s like a nice journey, a journey through different things but that still makes sense in the end.

And do you feel that with “Eclipse”, you had more confidence to show all sides of your voice and personality?

Yeah, absolutely because I improved as a singer, as a performer, with experience of course, and because I kept working on it for all these years. And of course it pays off. Practice pays off. And experience also, it’s quite key to everything, to becoming better. So I was more confident in my own skin, in my abilities. And also more as a songwriter. I don’t write songs but having the ideas that really fit and that came to me quite easily, like exactly what to do. And I did not have that back then. You know, it was a little bit more searching “Okay, what if we can do this? We do this“. This time it was immediately “I know, I know what to do. And I know it’s going to work out“. So for me, it’s also a nice surprise and I’m glad we are all evolving in the band, in a sense.

And “Eclipse” is not the disappearance of light but a temporary transformation of how we perceive it. How does that image reflect the emotional and musical journey behind this album?

Yeah, the themes are very… okay, it’s quite dark, of course. We talk a lot about what’s going on in the world, the dark side of things, politically, society and everything. But despite this being the main theme on the album, there’s always a little bit of a hopeful thing, like a hopeful approach to it because it cannot all be… I mean, we are not a black metal band, right? We have to serve the music and express what we want to express in a way that matches the music. And when we do a beautiful song, something epic, it has to have the right feeling. Even though I do like the contrast of talking metaphorically about something really, really dark in a symphonic metal song, where you don’t expect it. I think it’s a really interesting way of putting some depth into the music. But there’s that light at the end of the tunnel, of course, which through the music also helps bring people together and kind of align ourselves with the good ideas and the good side, to say very plainly and very, you know, cliché. But yeah, I do hope it helps us all see the beauty.

And I noticed that this collective message is in the songs because many songs use “we” as a pronoun instead of “I”. It makes the album feel less like one person’s story but more like humanity speaking to itself. So was that a conscious choice?

Yeah, it’s definitely to appeal to the community and to talk like we are a community. Not only this is one voice talking about what they feel at that exact moment. It’s a message of gathering, kind of, to have that “we” in it and also that people can feel that “Oh, wait, I’m actually involved in these things. I should be concerned by it because I’m part of it“.

And talking about another song, “The Grand Delusion” is one of the strongest statements on the album. What fascinated me is that the song is not simply criticising beliefs but the moment when beliefs are turned into a weapon. Why do you think humans are sometimes attracted to ideas that divide rather than unite?

Oh, that is a very good question. Very deep question. Wow, I have to write a philosophical essay about this question. It’s something that really makes you think. It rejoins what I said before about that primal instinct that we all have, that comes from prehistoric times at this point. It’s been in there. It’s part of evolution in a way. But part of evolution is also reason, the reasoning that humans get. And this is what we have to use to see what’s right and what’s not, especially living in a society now. But yeah, maybe it’s easier. And I do think that a lot of people who are unhappy about certain things in their life, they love to put it out there. They need to put it on other people. And of course, it’s easy then. The hate. What is society hating right now? I cannot hate someone random. It’s going to be “Oh, those people who, I don’t know, are from a certain nationality“. They’re different, right? They’re far away. And somehow a lot of other people hate them. I don’t really know why it is this way, really. But it’s like also religion. It was supposed to be something positive, right? But it turned into making and creating the biggest conflicts that history ever had. And it will always be the case. And this is the really sad thing so they use what they can use to spread hate and turn things around. And it will always be in us, in humans. I don’t know. Maybe it’s because some people are unhappy. Yeah, it’s a really deep, deep question here.

And “Wave of Tanis” looks at civilizations that rise and eventually disappear, almost suggesting that humanity keeps repeating the same patterns. Do you think we are actually capable of learning from history? Do you think artists have a role in reminding people of those lessons?

Also, great question. Yeah, this is my thing. This is something I really, really would like people to be aware of and I’m not putting myself above it. I mean, all of us. We have to remember what we learn from history. Why can’t the world learn from history? For me, the biggest thing is being the intelligence of humans, is learning from your mistakes. As a person also, to grow, this is the only chance you’re going to fail and you’re going to make some mistakes because that’s human. But you have to learn from it. The people that scare me are the people who repeat the same mistakes and don’t learn from them, because you end up being hurt by that. And to not have that awareness of, like, “I made that mistake once, it’s probably going to happen again so I need to change my ways“. But somehow it’s a difficult thing. And this is where, as a society, it would be good to remember what happens because we are going in the same direction of some of the biggest tragedies in the world. Nobody’s worrying about this. We’ve seen it happening. It’s the same with climate change. We are not the elite. We are not indestructible. I don’t like that some people think that we are the elite on Earth. There’s only Earth. We are the elite. We’re never going to die. If you mistreat the planet, you never know. “Wave of Tanis” is about the dinosaurs, which is strange to say out loud, but the disappearance of the dinosaurs, what happened in the world, can absolutely happen again and it happened many times that life started over. So this is something: we are not that special. I’m sorry to say, but we are not that special so we need to care for the things that should be taken care of, care about your close ones, care about the planet you live on, care about the other people that are doing the same thing as you. And always remember, instead of voting for extreme parties, that this could lead to an absolute disaster where you will not win in the end and you will be very unhappy when they take your freedom away. You will be extremely happy when they take everything from you. So why are you falling into those patterns and those beliefs? So yeah, this is a bit what the song is about, of course.

And “The Last Generation” asks very uncomfortable questions about what we leave behind for younger generations, as you told me in the last question we were talking about. Do you think artists have a responsibility to give a voice to issues that affect the future?

Yeah, I think it’s a responsibility in a way. I mean, I think it’s good when you have a platform of people kind of listening to what you say. I think it’s good to spread positivity and to spread awareness about things. It doesn’t have to be political. But just in general, use your voice for good, no matter where you are, no matter what your platform is. I don’t know if it’s a responsibility because I don’t necessarily have it thrown at me. But I do like it when an artist is talking about these topics. I have a lot of respect. Last night I was watching a Wacken show of a German band, Hämatom, which I used to really like. I think I usually don’t like this kind of masked band and costumes. It’s not my thing but they always had really good songs and especially really good statements and they made a show. It was extremely entertaining. It was fun, with good songs but at the same time, a very strong stance on where they stand politically and where Germany is going and making it really obvious. And I had so much respect when you can do both and when you are not afraid of standing for what you believe in. and when it’s, of course, the right thing, which is strange to say but we know what the bad things are and we know what the right things are. We know the extreme politics that stand for racism, without actually saying this is obviously on the bad side. So I do really like when artists, rock bands, metal bands, pop artists have good statements like this and it can be very subtle or it can be very out there. I have a lot of respect. I would not say it’s a responsibility maybe because it’s art after all. We like to hear different things. I love more poetry, more. I don’t always want to hear something political or something negative but use your platform for good. My favourite lyrics. The lyrics of that song are maybe my favourite of the album because I’ve been saying this. It’s Marco who wrote it but we talked about it before. And I was like “Please, please say it” because it’s something I’ve been saying for so long. And finally, it’s in a song. I think instead of finding magic in something that doesn’t exist… Okay, this is a sensitive subject, of course, when you touch religion. And also I want to be careful about what I’m saying and mindful. But it’s tough without being honest, really. So instead of creating an entity that supposedly controls everything and created the world and also divides people and creates a lot of division through religious beliefs… I think for me, the magic stands in the universe. We did not need to do this. No matter what you believe in, this is totally fine. I have my own beliefs and I do not believe in God. So for me, the magic of the universe stands in the universe itself: the creation of it, how it works. I mean, imagine if you think about it, that we are here right now. You know that Nightwish song, “We Were Here“? It says it all. It says exactly that. That’s actually what’s absolutely incredible: that we walk. You know, it’s already magical how things are existing, that we are in this world and in the universe. Look at the stars. Look at the planets. The universe is kind of infinite in a way. So who knows what’s out there? And for me, this is completely magical. If there was something magical in the world, this is it so I love that the song addressed that and that I always had this really strong belief that, “Oh my God, people are not looking at the right things and people are not appreciating the right things“. This… this, how can there be… I don’t know. I’m not… it’s a sensitive topic. I don’t want to offend anyone, so I’m not going to go too much further into that. But yeah, basically this is that.

And “The Poetry Of The Real World” has instead a fascinating idea. And as a headliner, you have a long set. It’s a very challenging setlist. Now we have… Yeah, it’s very difficult. Symphonic metal in general is a difficult genre to sing, especially Xandria.

You know, I pushed it really further.

E in qualche modo molte altre persone iniziano a odiarle.

Quindi perché cadere in questi schemi e in queste convinzioni?

E “The Poetry Of The Real World” invece presenta un’idea affascinante.

Conosci quella canzone dei Nightwish, “We Were Here“? Dice tutto. Guarda i pianeti. L’universo è in qualche modo infinito.
