How are things going so far as the album release is getting closer?

Yes, I’m a little bit nervous and excited because it’s my second album and it’s with a new label, Napalm Records. It’s a metal label and it’s what I always wanted. I hope that people love the songs and get into them because I love doing what I do. I’m also a comedian in Germany but people have always known that I love metal music but now it’s my second album. So, in a way, I’m a newcomer too, because I’ve built up a new audience. But I like it and I love it and I see it as a challenge too. People in Germany may have thought “it’s only a project because he loves metal music” but now they think “oh wow, here comes a second album, he’s serious“.

And your new album is called “B.L.N.T” which seems to be your name without the vowels. Why did you choose such a stripped-down version of your name for the album? Does it represent a more direct or stripped-down side of you?

I think it was more like a trend. You know, you see “Fuck racism” written on T-shirts, and they write “FCK”, without the U. That’s how it came about: “Oh, that’s cool, B.L.N.T.” It also works internationally. I’m doing this interview with you now, and some people aren’t familiar with the Ü in Bülent, the U with two dots. So we made it B.L.N.T. I spoke to an Australian interviewer, and because AC/DC are from Australia, he thought it might be a funny reference to their song “T.N.T.” I said, “No, actually not, but that’s an interesting perspective”. So, yes, it came from my name and this second album is really more me. It’s about my thoughts, who I am and what I think. It’s also somewhat political, with songs like “Diktatürk” or “5 to 12”. It’s about how we really have to do something about the world because it’s terrible how things are going at the moment. This is me as Bülent, as a singer rather than a comedian. As a singer, I can include more serious things and show more of my emotional side. That’s how I express myself.

Of course, someone who doesn’t speak German might not understand it straight away. They might say, “Oh, I like the music”. But often, when you like the music, you want to look up what the lyrics mean and what the singer is singing about. Then you think “Ah, that’s what it’s about. Great!” And maybe you love it even more. Sometimes you don’t need to understand every single word, as long as you know what it’s about. As a fan of other bands, I don’t always understand everything either. For me, it’s enough to know the meaning. I love the music and the power and energy of those words.

And do you feel that this album shows more of Bülent, the musician, and less of Bülent, the comedian?

Yeah, it’s more Bülent the musician than Bülent the comedian because I separate those two sides, not completely, because they’re both part of who I am. I became famous as a comedian in Germany but in your country or in other countries, people know me as a musician. You don’t know me as a comedian. You might hear “He’s a comedian in Germany” but you don’t understand the language, so you don’t know my comedy. You don’t see the comedian first; you see the metal singer, the musician.

In Germany, a lot of comedians make comedy songs and I didn’t want to feel like “I’m a comedian so now I have to make comedy songs”. Why can’t I be both a comedian and a musician?

Of course, there is a song on the album called “Meine langen Haare” which means “My long hair”. That brings some of my comedy onto the album too, because that’s also me, Bülent. I don’t mean that I want to leave comedy behind or stop being a comedian. It’s part of my life, I like it and I still do it.

But as a musician, you can express more of your dark side, your deeper side, your strength and your anger. As a comedian, people want to laugh. They don’t want to think “Oh, he’s being so serious now”. But in a song, you can be really serious and people still love it. They celebrate the song, even when you’re saying really hard things. That’s the good thing about music.

And do you remember the exact moment when you thought “Okay, I’m not just a comedian who loves metal, I actually want to make a metal album”?

Yes, before comedy, I had a rock band. I was in school, in high school and we had a drummer and a little room where we could practise. That was a nice time. But when you’re young, the drummer might say “No, I want to do something else” and the guitar player says “I’m studying this”. So we went our separate ways because everyone had different paths or directions they wanted to take.

Then it’s hard to find another band. It’s not easy so I was on my own. I always had comedy and I concentrated on that, which was successful. But then, one day, “Masked Singer” came along. You know the show? People wear masks and different costumes and the audience has to guess who’s behind them: “Who is the lion? Who is that angel?”. I was an angel and I sang rock songs on the show. I made it to the final, and people weren’t really sure “Is this Bülent or not?” I was already famous but they didn’t know me as a singer or recognise my singing voice.

After I made it to the final, everyone said “Why don’t you make an album, Bülent? You’ve always loved metal and rock music. You always do rock. Why don’t you do it? Your voice is good”.

So I kicked myself in the ass and said “Come on, I’ll try to do it” Then came my first album. It was good but it wasn’t really what I wanted yet. It was about finding my way. The second album is more of a metal and rock album. With Napalm Records, it’s now going more in that direction. I think I’m on the right track and I feel really good about this second album. We’ll see where it goes. Being famous in one country doesn’t mean you automatically have an audience in metal music. You have to build a new audience and win people over. You have to work for it. They have to see that you really want to do it and that you really love it. So I try my best. I really want to do this. It’s fun for me, I love it and I’ve got a passion for it. We’ll see how the audience takes it and whether it strikes a chord with them. The most important thing is that, as an artist, you stand behind it and you’re proud of it. Some artists do what the industry tells them to do: “Sing this song because it’s successful”. Maybe they don’t really feel it but they do it for the money or the success. That’s not why I’m doing this. I’m doing it because I love it. And if it’s successful, then of course I’ll be happy too.

And compared to the first album, is there anything you did differently? I mean, you have the experience of the first album and you did the second one. Is there anything else you did differently this time?

Yeah, it’s heavier. When I look at all the songs, it’s more metal compared to the first album. I said to the label “Please give me the freedom to do what I feel” without worrying about whether it can be played on the radio.

You know, sometimes they say “Oh, it’s too long. It’s over three minutes”. These days, radio stations say, “More than three minutes? No, no, no. Can it be two minutes and thirty seconds? That would be good for us”.

So I say, “No, I make the songs the way I feel”. I love it. Some songs may be shorter but others may be longer than three minutes. I do it for the audience, not for the industry. If the industry loves it and the audience loves it, then that’s good. But the most important thing is that I want to make a second album that I stand behind, where people say “Yeah, that’s you. That’s authentic”. And I think it’s more authentic than the first album.

And you invited Doro Pesch to sing on “Wolfsherz” and she’s obviously a legendary voice in German heavy metal. What was your reaction when you first heard her voice on your song?

It’s a big honour. Doro Pesch is famous worldwide and she’s really a legend in the metal scene. The song she sang with me “Wolfsherz”, “Wolf Heart”, in a way, is a soft rock song. The lyrics are about losing someone in your life, someone who dies. You had a good time with that person but now you’re losing them. It’s about working through that loss in the song.

First, it was a big honour that she said “This is a great song. I’ll sing it with you” And second, for me as a comedian, especially in Germany, it’s a big door opener. When metalheads see that Doro Pesch is singing with me, they think “He can’t be that bad. If she’s singing with him, maybe we’ll go and watch his show”.

It was a pleasure working with her. She’s a really nice, beautiful, good-hearted woman. She’s also really sensitive, but very disciplined in what she does. She has her goals and she’s really lovely. And the craziest, most emotional thing happened when we filmed the music video. We worked with wolves, real wolves, not AI. People say “Oh, that’s AI” but I say “No, it’s real. They’re not computer-generated. They’re real wolves”.

I was scared, really scared. Doro wasn’t. She was lik “Ah, here come the dogs!” I said “They’re not dogs, they’re wolves!” It was funny in a way, and in a way it wasn’t, you know? She wasn’t scared at all but it was my first time working with wolves in a music video. After we finished filming the video, her mother died that night. Her mother was already ill but Doro didn’t know when she would pass away. The song is about someone who dies and then her mother died. So that was very emotional. “Wolfsherz” which I sing with Doro, is on my album, and that makes the song really special to me now. It was already a good song, but because of what happened, it has even more meaning for me and maybe for the fans too, once they know the story.

Another collaboration on the album is “Randale und Raddau,” featuring Michael from In Extremo. What can you tell me about this collaboration?

In Extremo are legends in the metal scene for me too and they’ve been touring for many years. This is a party rock song. Even if you don’t know what “Randale und Raddau” means, it’s like “Hey, come on, let’s all go crazy!” Then there’s this chorus “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh”. Everyone can sing that, whether they’re German, Italian or whatever. People feel it even if they don’t fully understand the lyrics. It’s something we can all sing together and just go for it. I’ve known him for a while and I said “It would be an honour for me if you featured on this song”. He likes me too so I was really happy and lucky that he said “Yes, let’s do it. Have you got something?” I said “Hey, these are the lyrics. This is how I think it should be”. He liked it and said “Wow, this is a great song. Let’s do it”.

What was great for me was that he improvised on the song too. He plays the harmonica really well so he played the solo. Normally, a guitar would play that part but he did it on the harmonica and it was great. He asked “Can I do it?” and I said “Yes, of course!”. He also added some extra words to the chorus and improvised there. I said “This all makes the song better”. He really, really loved doing it.

I’m really happy that Doro and Michael, who are from Germany but have also performed internationally, were involved. They’re really experienced and they said “You’ve got a really good chance of becoming a metal singer with your own audience, a big audience”.

I said “We’ll see how it goes” But I don’t think they would have done it if they didn’t believe in it. Why would they? They wanted to do it because they liked it. For me, it was a big honour and a great pleasure.

I’m happy that I’ve always been nice to people throughout my life, because that comes back to you, you know? The way you treat people comes back to you from the universe, from God. I’m a Christian and I believe in God. I think that when you do good things or are nice to people, people will be nice to you in return. Maybe not the same people, maybe others but I think it all comes back to you.

After 25 years of making people laugh, and now several years of seriously pursuing music, what still makes you nervous before walking onto the stage?

You know, it doesn’t stop. I always get nervous. People say “But you’ve been on stage for nearly 30 years as a comedian, and now as a musician. You’re a professional”. But that doesn’t matter. I still get nervous.

In 2024, two years ago, I was really, really nervous when we opened Wacken with my band. There were 80,000 people and I thought “Oh my gosh, we haven’t even had a hit on the radio”. People knew me as a comedian but performing with the band was still all very new. My heart was pumping louder than the music. That nervousness doesn’t stop, but I think it’s a good sign. It means you still have respect for the audience and it means you care about that moment. I think some people drink or do other things to handle it but that’s not good. It makes you feel even crazier. I’ve never taken drugs in my life. That’s why I always say I’m a chamomile rocker.

Maybe I’m very sensitive in that way. A lot of musicians are sensitive but they struggle to handle success or nervousness. I think it’s good to be fully conscious on stage and remember what happens. Having a beer or some wine sometimes is okay but you shouldn’t have drugs or anything in your system when you’re on stage.

That keeps you grounded and then you know what to do. Sometimes it’s good to be nervous. You should accept the nervousness and say “Okay, this is how it is. That’s okay”. It makes me feel alive and it’s a sign of respect for the audience and for life.

That was the last question.

Sai, a volte dicono “Oh, è troppo lunga. Supera i tre minuti“. No, no, no. Può durare due minuti e trenta secondi?

E in secondo luogo, per me come comico, soprattutto in Germania, apre molte porte.

Avevo paura, davvero paura. Doro no. Diceva “Ah, ecco che arrivano i cani!“.

Ho detto “Vedremo come andrà“.
