[ENG]<\/strong> Ray Bradbury<\/em> once wrote that for some, autumn comes early and stays for a lifetime.
“Spooky Tunes and Haunting Stories<\/strong>” is a clear tribute to the dark and spectral world of Halloween. This is an almost flawless concept album, from the first to the last note, accompanied by stunning artwork by the legendary Travis Smith <\/em>(known for his work with Opeth, Katatonia, Riverside, and many others). The balanced mixing gives the album a cohesive sound and highlights every nuance and subtle detail that makes a real difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blackwall<\/strong> masterfully play with dark atmospheres, crafting a ghostly (though never macabre) lullaby, like the soundtrack to a coming-of-age horror novel. Listening to it brought to mind the image of a child curled up in bed, afraid of the dark, hearing the sound of a brittle branch tapping against the windowpane, moved by the wind. Jack-o\u2019-lanterns with fiery eyes, black crows, dancing skeletons. And then rain, fog, and shadowy, monstrous figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tracks are thoughtfully composed\u2014intricate but never overdone\u2014with inspired melodies throughout. In “The Devil\u2019s Discord<\/strong>“, there are vocal echoes reminiscent of Sentenced. “Sk\u00e5l<\/strong>“stays with you for days, with its choral refrain that feels like it belongs in a ghostly tavern. The dark atmosphere pervades the entire album, but at times, it\u2019s surprisingly catchy\u2014particularly in tracks like “Maledictions<\/strong>” and “Spooky Stories MMXXIV<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the kind of album that grows in you with every listening. Each time, you discover a new arrangement or a previously overlooked detail that pleasantly surprises you. “Blue Trees Meadow<\/strong>” calls to mind the semi-acoustic melancholy of Opeth\u2019s Damnation<\/em>, with its wistful, autumnal melodies. “Python<\/strong>” carries echoes of Type O Negative in its chorus, while “Old Vinyl<\/strong>” again evokes Sentenced with its sorrowful vocals and atmosphere. A more progressive vein, with frequent transitions between distorted and acoustic sections\u2014always meticulously crafted\u2014emerges in “The Pumpkin King<\/strong>” and the album closer, “The Witch<\/strong>“. The opening guitar riff of “The Witch<\/strong>” is strongly reminiscent of Opeth, with a nod to Mikael \u00c5kerfeldt\u2019s style in the song\u2019s arpeggiated acoustic guitar outro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blackwall<\/strong> deliver an impressive performance, with inspired melodies and tracks structured in a diverse and original way, incorporating evident musical influences used wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vocals of George Lyberis<\/em> (also on guitar) and Alex Lagogiannis<\/em> (also on bass) are hard to distinguish from each other. They feel elusive, with countless nuances\u2014each one different and always fresh. On the whole, this works well, though I can\u2019t help but wonder if it\u2019s an intentional choice or a \u201climitation\u201d that paradoxically enhanced the album\u2019s overall success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, don\u2019t be afraid\u2014let yourself go. With The Blackwall<\/strong>, it\u2019s always Halloween and the ghosts are celebrating!<\/p>\n\n\n

[ITA]<\/strong> Ray Bradbury scrisse\u00a0 che per alcuni l’autunno viene presto e permane per tutta la vita.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpooky Tunes and Haunting Stories<\/strong>\u201d \u00e8 un chiaro tributo all\u2019immaginario di Halloween, oscuro e spettrale. Siamo di fronte ad un concept album pressoch\u00e8 impeccabile, dalla prima all\u2019ultima nota, corredato di uno splendido artwork a cura del grande Travis Smith<\/em> (che ha realizzato disegni per Opeth, Katatonia, Riverside e tanti altri) e sorretto da un mixing molto equilibrato, che dona al lavoro un suono compatto e mette in risalto ogni sfumatura e tanti piccoli accorgimenti che fanno la differenza.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I The Blackwall<\/strong> sanno giocare magistralmente con le atmosfere dark e compongono una ninna nanna spettrale (mai macabra) come la colonna sonora di un libro horror di formazione. Mi ha riportato alla mente la scena di un bimbo rintanato nel letto della propria stanzetta per paura del buio. Ed il suono della punta di un ramo secco mosso dal vento sul vetro della finestra. Zucche con gli occhi di fiamma, corvi neri, scheletri danzanti. Ed ancora pioggia, nebbia e figure mostruose indefinite.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siamo al cospetto di brani articolati al punto giusto e mai scontati, con melodie molto ispirate. In \u201cThe Devil’s Discord<\/strong>\u201d ci sono reminiscenze di Sentenced nelle voci graffiate. \u201cSk\u00e5l<\/strong>\u201d rimane in testa per giorni col suo ritornello corale che sembra uscito da una osteria popolata di spettri. Le atmosfere oscure pervadono tutto il disco, ma a volte risultano anche catchy, come nel caso di \u201cMaledictions<\/strong>\u201d e \u201cSpooky Stories MMXXIV<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questo \u00e8 un album che pi\u00f9 lo si ascolta e pi\u00f9 lo si apprezza. Ogni volta si scopre un arrangiamento, un particolare  sfuggito in precedenza  e che poi ti sorprende positivamente. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBlue Trees Meadow<\/strong>\u201d richiama un po’ gli Opeth di Damnation con\u00a0 quell\u2019impronta semi acustica e certe melodie malinconicamente autunnali. \u201cPython<\/strong>\u201d possiede echi di Type O Negative nel refrain. \u201cOld Vinyl<\/strong>\u201d richiama ancora una volta i Sentenced nell\u2019uso sofferto della voce e nelle atmosfere. Una vena pi\u00f9 progressive, con continui passaggi da parti distorte a intermezzi acustici, sempre estremamente curati, traspare da \u201cThe Pumpkin King<\/strong>\u201d e soprattutto dalla conclusiva \u201cThe Witch<\/strong>\u201d. Qui il riff inziale di chitarra rimanda fortemente a qualcosa degli Opeth, omaggiati anche nel finale di canzone con una chitarra acustica arpeggiata in perfetto stile Michael Akerfeldt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I The Blackwall<\/strong> ci offrono una prestazione notevole, con melodie ispirate e brani strutturati in modo vario e originale, con riferimenti musicali evidenti ed utilizzati in modo saggio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le voci di George Lyberis<\/em> (anche alle chitarre) e di Alex Lagogiannis<\/em> (anche al basso) sono difficilmente distinguibili fra loro, e risultano sfuggenti, nel senso che possiedono tante sfumature, tutte diverse e sempre nuove. \u00c8 un bene nel complesso, mi domando solo se sia una scelta voluta o un \u201climite\u201d che ha paradossalmente giovato alla buona riuscita del disco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E allora non abbiate paura e lasciatevi andare.
