It’s an album that enchants long-time fans while opening the door to a whole new generation.

Set for release on August 29, 2025 via Reigning Phoenix Music, “Giants & Monsters” presents itself from the very title as an album steeped in symbolism and duality. More than 50 minutes of music flow gracefully between light and shadow, between the epic grandeur of the “Giants”, emblems of strength, courage, and perseverance, and the abyss of the “Monsters,” allegories of inner conflict and insecurity.

The record follows the acclaimed “Skyfall” (2021), solidifying an artistic direction that balances melodic experimentation with sheer sonic impact. Once again, Helloween prove their mastery at blending the power of metal with compositional finesse, delivering a layered and cohesive work that speaks equally to the heart and to raw instinct.

After writing the defining chapters of Power Metal history with the legendary “Keeper of the Seven Keys I & II“, Helloween have traced an artistic journey rich in evolution, through lineup changes and bold sonic experimentation. The arrival of Andi Deris in 1994 marked the beginning of a new era, crowned by the triumphant return of Michael Kiske in 2016, forging a vocal partnership unmatched in today’s metal landscape.

Kiske, with his soaring, theatrical tone, embodies the celestial side of Helloween’s sound, while Deris brings its earthly power, gritty, sharp-edged, and emotionally charged. In “Giants & Monsters“, this duality reaches one of its most compelling peaks: the two voices intertwine and complement each other, leading the listener through a sonic journey that ranges from introspective ballads to epic mid-tempos, and further into the fast-paced assaults that define Power Metal. It’s a rare balance, born of decades of experience and a shared vision that continues to evolve without ever losing its coherence.

Behind the desk once again is Dennis Ward, whose balanced approach brings out every element: razor-sharp guitars, a bass brimming with drive, and drums defined in every strike. The mix is crystal clear, with keyboards introduced at just the right moments. The mastering, handled by Jens Bogren, highlights the dynamics, steering clear of the “wall of sound” compression effect and allowing the album to breathe, a precious quality in today’s modern metal production.

The record opens with “Giants on the Run“, an ambitious, cinematic introduction: over six minutes of progressive build-up, where the band alternates between melodic passages and heavier moments. The dual vocals intertwine with precision, exploiting the contrast between Kiske and Deris, while the arrangement gradually intensifies toward a sweeping, choral refrain. A bold choice for an opening track, immediately affirming the album’s mature identity.

“Savior of the World” stands out as one of the album’s most effective cuts: firmly rooted in classic power metal, driven by a straightforward riff, relentless double bass drumming, and clear, energetic vocals. The track feels designed to channel the aesthetics of the band’s golden era, without lapsing into mere nostalgia. The tight interplay between guitars and drums is sharp yet functional, and the melody lingers after just one listen.

With “A Little Is a Little Too Much“, the band embraces simplicity: a leaner, more accessible song built on compact writing and an immediate chorus. The vocal lines rest on a rhythmic base that is simple yet carefully balanced, with a clear eye toward radio appeal. The production amplifies its melodic breath without sacrificing instrumental integrity.

“We Can Be Gods” broadens the harmonic horizon. Energetic and sustained, with a wide scope, the track relies on a carefully crafted progression between verse and chorus, avoiding unnecessary layering and letting the melodic structure carry the song on its own strength.

“Into the Sun” takes a more accessible path. An intense and evocative ballad, it begins with a delicate piano-and-orchestral arrangement, leaving space for the expressive voices of Deris and Kiske. The track unfolds into an introspective atmosphere, paced by an emotional crescendo that peaks in a melodic, captivating chorus, making it one of the most moving moments of the album.

“This Is Tokyo” is the first single to introduce the album, one of its most modern-sounding tracks, built on a tight, squared rhythm and an immediate, catchy chorus. The songwriting here leans toward more contemporary coordinates, with recognizable textures that never lose the band’s signature touch. The vocal delivery carries an almost theatrical flair.

“Universe (Gravity for Hearts)” is the album’s most ambitious piece, and not by chance, its longest, running over eight minutes. Here the band explores more intricate structures, alternating atmospheric passages with bursts of energy. The dynamics are handled with maturity, and the vocal interplay reaches one of its highest points. It’s a track that demands the listener’s attention, but rewards it generously.

With “Hand of God”, the band returns to a more concise, straightforward form. The opening riff is razor-sharp, Deris’ delivery turns grittier, and the overall structure moves with efficiency. It’s one of the less “earthly” and more cerebral tracks on the record, and it works precisely because of its clarity of intent.

“Under the Moonlight” brings the most nostalgic moment of the album. A luminous mid-tempo led by Michael Kiske’s crystalline, commanding voice, it evokes the band’s classic roots with delicacy while retaining a fresh, uplifting tone. It offers a moment of breathing space and reflection at the album’s core.

The record closes with “Majestic,” an epic track that encapsulates many of the album’s defining elements: wide harmonic progressions, refined instrumental interplay, and a final crescendo with the feel of a collective farewell. The three guitars weave together in a masterful play of subtraction and layering, building toward an impeccable finale: powerful in its cohesion, yet never excessive, a sonic epic of sophisticated grandeur.

Despite the overall high quality, a few moments, particularly certain riffs, lean a little too heavily on nostalgia, to the point of sounding less original. Some instrumental interludes, while technically impressive, occasionally disrupt the narrative flow, creating brief stretches that feel longer than necessary in an album that hardly needs extra pauses.

Still, “Giants & Monsters” reaffirms Helloween as pillars of Power Metal, masters at uniting the weight of the riff, the craft of melody, and the energy of grand choruses. The vocal interplay between Michael Kiske and Andi Deris remains the defining hallmark of the record, making it both a collective and deeply personal experience. Without reinventing the genre, the album delivers genuine emotion and choruses that will echo in the ears of fans, and beyond, for a long time to come.

“We Can Be Gods” amplia l’orizzonte armonico.

“Under the Moonlight” è invece il momento più “nostalgico”.
