It is precisely this image that reflects in Xandria’s new album, “Eclipse“, a work that does not simply tell the story of a complex historical period, but invites the collective to question the present, its own responsibilities and the direction we are choosing.

After “The Wonders Still Awaiting“, the album that marked the beginning of a new era with the arrival of vocalist Ambre Vourvahis, “Eclipse“ represents the moment in which this new line-up finally seems to find its own identity. If the previous work had the task of presenting a new voice and a new phase for the German band, this album shows greater confidence, a more natural chemistry and a much more defined artistic vision.

However, it would be reductive to consider “Eclipse” only as the album that consecrates Ambre. The true strength of this record lies precisely in the fact that Xandria seem to have overcome the transition phase: we are no longer facing a line-up with a new singer called to carry an important legacy but a band that has found a new balance and a common language.

Marco Heubaum’s compositional vision remains the beating heart of the project, but this time every element seems to contribute in a more organic way to the construction of the Xandria universe. The guitars alternate between more modern and powerful riffs and more melodic moments, the rhythm section effectively accompanies the constant changes in atmosphere, and the orchestral arrangements are never used simply to increase the grandeur of the songs, but become an integral part of the storytelling. The guests featured on the album also fit perfectly into this mosaic: Ally Storch’s violin and McAlbi’s Celtic folk instruments add new shades without ever moving the band away from its own identity.

Xandria therefore create an extremely varied album, where symphonic metal meets cinematic atmospheres, Celtic folk elements, darker moments and almost electronic influences. It is not simply an accumulation of genres but a precise narrative choice: every element is used to tell something, just as it happens in a movie soundtrack. The influence of the cinematic world, always present in the band’s vision and particularly connected to Marco Heubaum’s listening background, emerges in the ability to create images and atmospheres through music.

The introduction entrusted to “Syzygy” perfectly prepares the ground for what will be the journey of “Eclipse“, a path that immediately comes alive with the title track, probably the manifesto song of the entire album. The eclipse becomes the metaphor of a historical moment in which the light of reason, empathy and coexistence risks being obscured. It is not only about a dark period but about the risk of losing what makes human society capable of evolving. It is a powerful opening, where majestic choirs, impactful riffs and imposing orchestrations create a sense of urgency, while Ambre shows from the very first minutes all the nuances of her interpretation, moving from more intimate and emotional lines to a more aggressive side with the growls in the final part.

The ideal answer comes with “Colours“, a song that transforms the concept of diversity into a declaration of strength. The line “Light is made of a thousand different colour shades” perfectly captures the message of the song: light is not born from uniformity, but from the combination of endless shades. One of the most successful tracks on the album, capable of combining immediacy and depth. The chorus remains easily memorable while in the second half Ambre grows even further, supported by choirs and orchestral arrangements that amplify the collective feeling of the song.

With “The Shannon’s Home“, Xandria slow down the journey and leave space for a more poetic and contemplative dimension. Through the metaphor of the Shannon River, the song reflects on the passage of time and on our role within a story much larger than ourselves. Our existence becomes only a small fragment of a broader journey, a thread within a weave that continues beyond the individual. The presence of McAlbi’s Celtic tin and low whistles adds a very interesting traditional component, capable of giving the song further character and balancing the symphonic side. It is precisely this ability to introduce different elements without losing cohesion that represents one of the most interesting aspects of “Eclipse“.

One of the most powerful moments arrives with “The Grand Delusion“, an energetic and imposing track that addresses the theme of manipulation and the loss of critical thinking. The “great delusion” does not simply represent a false truth, but the moment when humanity stops questioning and accepts narratives created to divide and control. It is one of the songs where Xandria’s darker side emerges the most, with a successful balance between metal aggression and orchestral grandeur.

“Wave Of Tanis” instead takes the reflection to a much broader temporal scale. Tanis, an ancient Egyptian city now considered a symbol of a lost civilization, becomes the metaphor for human fragility: no empire is eternal, no society is immune to change. Every generation believes it is different, every civilization thinks it has reached its peak, but history continues to remind us that everything is destined to transform. It is probably one of the most universal reflections of the album, capable of connecting past and present. Musically, the song alternates between more accessible and melodic moments and others that are rougher and heavier, while always maintaining a strong focus on the live dimension and on its ability to involve the listener.

After so much darkness comes “Northstar“, one of the tracks that best represents the hopeful side of “Eclipse“. The North Star becomes the metaphor for the values that should guide humanity when everything seems to lose direction: solidarity, freedom and the ability to remain united. The musical structure follows this exact path, starting from more delicate atmospheres and progressively opening towards brighter and more engaging moments. Once again, the folk elements contribute to making the song unique and recognizable.

“Masquerade” instead explores the theme of appearance and the masks we often wear in modern society. The world is described as a great spectacle where many people play a role instead of truly showing themselves. Musically, the song follows this transformation: it starts in a more delicate and intimate way before accelerating towards a more energetic dimension, ending with a more aggressive component.

“The Last Generation” is probably one of the most emotionally heavy moments of the album. A ballad built around a simple but devastating question: how can we look into the eyes of the new generations knowing what we are leaving behind for them? The song addresses the themes of collective responsibility, the future and the consequences of our choices. Ambre’s performance is fundamental because she manages to convey fragility, anger and hope without ever sounding artificial.

With “The Poetry Of The Real World“, Xandria instead choose a more philosophical and contemplative pause. After dealing with conflicts, divisions and fears, the song reminds us that reality itself is already something extraordinary. There is no need to create perfect worlds or necessarily search for something beyond existence in order to find wonder: we are all part of the same story, all made of the same stardust. It is perhaps the most reflective moment of the album, a celebration of life and human curiosity.

The closing track, “Lore“, a song of over eight minutes, is the perfect ending to this journey. Xandria fully enter their most cinematic dimension, creating a track rich in orchestrations, epic atmospheres and melancholic moments. Through images that recall great fantasy sagas, between empires, rebellions and the battle between light and darkness, the band once again transforms fantasy into a mirror of reality. The stories we tell and the ones we choose to believe in have the power to influence the world we build. And in the end, our own story will also be told: the question is which side we will choose to represent.

With “Eclipse“, Xandria therefore do not simply confirm the new path that began with “The Wonders Still Awaiting“, but prove that they have found their own dimension. It is an ambitious album, rich in contrasts and deeply connected to the present, where every element has a precise role. Ambre Vourvahis’ voice becomes one of the main instruments of this narrative: powerful, versatile and capable of moving from delicacy to fury. But the real strength of the album is that her voice does not exist only as a technical showcase: it becomes a way to express different emotions, characters and perspectives throughout the journey. The band manages to create a record where darkness and hope coexist, where heavy themes are never approached with pure negativity, but with the idea that awareness can still lead to change.

“Eclipse” looks at the shadows of our time without surrendering to the darkness. Because, exactly as the title suggests, during an eclipse the light does not truly disappear: it only changes the way we are able to see it.

Stefan Heilemann/Mirko Witzk

“The Last Generation” è probabilmente uno dei momenti emotivamente più pesanti dell’album.

Con “The Poetry Of The Real World” gli Xandria scelgono invece una pausa più filosofica e contemplativa.
