[ENG] After Capri Virkkunen’s departure, Amberian Dawn return with Nicole Willerton as the band’s new vocalist. The sound remains the classic symphonic/power metal style the band is known for, but what stands out the most is Nicole’s vocal expressiveness. Just listen to the growls in “Unchained“, which I consider one of the strongest tracks on the album.
The album opens with “Temptation’s Gates“, a song that immediately grabs the listener’s attention. After getting used to Heidi’s voice, it wasn’t easy to imagine such a successful transition, even though the vocals are no longer purely operatic. The first impression is very positive and leaves you eager to keep listening.
Next comes “The Vision of Dreaming“, which, in some ways, brings our beloved Nightwish to mind. “Moon“ is a particularly interesting track: at first listen it may seem a bit heavy, but it deserves several plays to fully appreciate its instrumental depth. “Eternal Flame“ is a classic symphonic metal song, featuring an epic and highly enjoyable chorus.
“Life Is Art“ continues in the same vein, while “This Night Is Waiting for Me“ is incredibly catchy. As I’m writing this review, I still find myself humming its chorus. The combination of Nicole’s vocals, the keyboards, and the choirs works exceptionally well.
Then we reach something a little different with “Undying Colours”, a beautiful ballad that showcases Nicole’s softer, more delicate side. The song begins with keyboards before the rest of the instruments gradually join in. It’s followed by “The Garden“, a track that’s perfect for switching off and simply enjoying the music, and finally “Phantasmagoria“, whose memorable chorus provides a satisfying conclusion to the album.
So, what can I say? Nicole has definitely passed the test with flying colors. Amberian Dawn seem ready to embrace a new chapter while still showing some hesitation about fully leaving the past behind. This album feels like a bridge between two eras, one coming to an end and another just beginning, with plenty of promise for the future. Nicole’s mezzo-soprano voice is a breath of fresh air, a real gem that brings new life to Amberian Dawn. I’m genuinely excited to see where the band goes from here.

Il sound rimane quello classico degli album symphonic/power metal del gruppo, ma ciò che spicca maggiormente è l’espressività della voce di Nicole. Basti pensare al growl presente nel brano “Unchained“, che ritengo una delle migliori canzoni del disco.
L’album si apre con la title track “Temptation’s Gates“, un brano che cattura subito l’ascoltatore. Abituati alla voce di Heidi, non era scontato aspettarsi un cambiamento così ben riuscito, pur restando in un contesto vocale non propriamente lirico. L’impatto è decisamente positivo e invoglia a proseguire l’ascolto.
Seguono brani come “The Vision of Dreaming“, che per certi aspetti richiama i nostri cari Nightwish. “Moon“ è una traccia particolare: a un primo ascolto può sembrare piuttosto pesante, ma merita di essere riascoltata più volte per apprezzarne appieno il potenziale, soprattutto a livello strumentale. “Eternal Flame“, invece, è il classico brano symphonic metal, con un ritornello piacevole ed epico.
“Life Is Art“ prosegue sulla stessa linea, mentre “This Night Is Waiting for Me“ conquista grazie a un ritornello estremamente catchy: mentre scrivo questa recensione, mi ritrovo ancora a canticchiarlo. Ottima la sintonia tra voce, tastiere e cori.
Arriviamo poi a un brano diverso dal resto: “Undying Colours“, un’ottima ballad nella quale ascoltiamo una Nicole più delicata, inizialmente accompagnata solo dalle tastiere, alle quali si aggiungono gradualmente gli altri strumenti. Seguono “The Garden“, perfetta per “staccare la mente”, e la conclusiva “Phantasmagoria“, che chiude il disco con un ritornello davvero orecchiabile.
Cosa dire? Nicole è decisamente promossa. Gli Amberian Dawn sembrano pronti ad aprire un nuovo capitolo, pur mostrando ancora un po’ di timore nel distaccarsi completamente dal passato. Questo album dà l’impressione di essere un ponte tra due ere: quella che si chiude e quella che si apre, lasciando intravedere ottime prospettive per il futuro. La voce mezzosoprano di Nicole rappresenta una ventata d’aria fresca, un piccolo gioiello che sta contribuendo a far brillare nuovamente gli Amberian Dawn. Sono davvero curiosa di vedere quale direzione prenderà la band nei prossimi album.
