[ENG] For those of my generation, Evanescence are one of the bands we grew up with during our middle school years. Back then, “Fallen” was, for me, the albuthe one that defined an entire period of my life. Over the years, however, that signature sound gradually faded away. That’s perfectly normal: every band evolves and experiments.
A few months ago, though, Evanescence announced their new album, “Sanctuary“, released a few weeks ago, and the first singles immediately gave the impression of a return to the “Fallen” era. The foundations of that unmistakable sound are still there, but now they’re accompanied by a far more mature Amy Lee, whose vocals have evolved enormously since her teenage years, backed by what has become the band’s solid and established lineup.
This is an angry album, and you can feel it from start to finish. Anyone following Amy Lee on social media knows how openly she has expressed her frustration and concern about the current political and social climate in the United States. That said, as she has explained in several interviews, “Sanctuary” isn’t strictly a political record. Instead, it represents a sanctuary, a safe place where anyone can find shelter when they no longer know where to run.
Tracks like “Beautiful Lie“ convey a sense of awakening, of reclaiming one’s identity and choosing truth over manipulation. The song almost feels like a companion piece to “Who Will You Follow“ which can be interpreted both on a personal level and as a commentary on the climate of control that many believe exists in today’s United States. I won’t dive too deeply into the political aspect, but the connection feels quite evident. Midway through the album we find “Tell Me When You’ve Had Enough“ another melodic and engaging track that paves the way for what is, in my opinion, one of the album’s highlights: “Rapture“ intense, powerful, and emotionally charged, it showcases the band’s full energy at its best. Then there’s “Afterlife“, originally released in 2025 for Netflix’s Devil May Cry. Rather than feeling like a last-minute addition, it blends seamlessly into the album’s overall flow. We then arrive at the title track, “Sanctuary“, which is arguably the true centerpiece of the record. It perfectly encapsulates the album’s message: finding a safe haven, whether physical or emotional, when everything around you seems to be falling apart. The song alternates delicate passages with the explosive dynamics that have always defined Evanescence, while conveying a sense of hope that runs throughout the entire album without sacrificing emotional intensity.
After this comes “How Do I Heal“, which begins with nothing more than Amy Lee’s voice accompanied by her piano. It’s a deeply emotional ballad that sends chills down the spine, recalling classics like My Immortal and Missing, while highlighting just how much Amy has grown as both a vocalist and an interpreter. The journey continues with “About Us,” a rather unusual track that may not be the album’s most immediate song, yet manages to stay with you after only a few listens.
“Calm Down“, on the other hand, instantly brought me back to the atmosphere of The Open Door. It’s a tense and dramatic piece that perfectly balances fragility and darkness, the very elements that have always defined the band’s gothic side. With “Self Destruct“, Evanescence step on the gas once again. Synths take center stage, the guitars gradually become more dominant, and the melody sticks with you from the very first listen.
Immediately afterward comes “Forever With You“, another heartbreaking ballad. It recalls some of the emotions found in Lost in Paradise, but with an even more intimate and painful intensity. Finally, the journey concludes with “Wild Open Heart“, a delicate yet fitting ending that brings this musical sanctuary to a close, leaving the listener with the sense of peace and refuge that serves as the album’s emotional core.
This is the lineup Evanescence needed to return to their best. Let’s be honest: “The Bitter Truth” had a few enjoyable songs, but it never came close to matching its predecessors, let alone this new release.
New bassist Emma Anzai and Tim McCord, now on guitar, alongside longtime members Will Hunt on drums and Troy McLawhorn on guitar, make this arguably the strongest lineup the band has had in years. Evanescence finally seem to have found their balance again, and the chemistry between the musicians is evident in every single track.
Listening to “Sanctuary” genuinely feels like traveling back twenty-five years and finally receiving the worthy successor to “Fallen“. Without taking anything away from “The Open Door” or the albums that followed, this record recaptures the emotions that many fans have been longing for. It’s not simply an exercise in nostalgia; instead, it builds upon the sound that made the band famous while presenting it with far greater compositional maturity and vocal excellence.
Amy Lee is at the peak of her abilities, both as a singer and as a performer, while the band sounds tighter, more inspired, and more cohesive than ever.
Now there’s only one thing left to do: wait to see them live again.
[ITA] Gli Evanescence, per quelli della mia generazione, sono una delle band con cui siamo cresciuti alle scuole medie. “Fallen“, per me, all’epoca era l’album della vita. Quel sound poi è andato pian piano a sparire: normale, una band si evolve e sperimenta.
Poi, però, mesi fa gli Evanescence hanno annunciato il nuovo album “Sanctuary“, uscito qualche settimana fa, e i singoli hanno dato la sensazione di un ritorno all’era “Fallen“. La base del sound è quella, con una Amy Lee sicuramente maturata a livello vocale rispetto a quando era un’adolescente, accompagnata dalla sua line-up ormai stabile.
È un album parecchio incazzato e si sente. Chi segue i social della cantante sa benissimo quanto abbia espresso rabbia e preoccupazione per l’attuale clima politico e sociale negli Stati Uniti. Il disco, però, come lei stessa ha dichiarato in diverse interviste, non è un album strettamente politico: rappresenta piuttosto un santuario, un rifugio sicuro dove chiunque può trovare riparo quando non sa più dove scappare.
Troviamo pezzi come “Beautiful Lie“, che trasmette un senso di risveglio, di recupero della propria identità e della scelta della verità al posto della manipolazione. Il brano sembra dialogare direttamente con “Who Will You Follow“, interpretabile sia a livello personale sia come riferimento al sistema di controllo che molti ritengono si stia vivendo negli Stati Uniti (non entro troppo nel discorso politico, ma il riferimento mi sembra piuttosto evidente).
Nel mezzo troviamo “Tell Me When You’ve Had Enough“, altra traccia melodica e coinvolgente, che prepara il terreno a quella che, a mio gusto, è una delle tracce meglio riuscite dell’intero disco: “Rapture“, intensa, potente e capace di mettere in mostra tutta l’energia della band.
C’è poi “Afterlife“, già pubblicata nel 2025 per la serie Netflix Devil May Cry, che si inserisce perfettamente nel contesto dell’album senza sembrare un’aggiunta dell’ultimo minuto.
Arriviamo quindi alla title track, “Sanctuary“, probabilmente il vero manifesto del disco. È il brano che racchiude il messaggio dell’intero lavoro: trovare un luogo sicuro, reale o interiore, dove rifugiarsi quando tutto sembra crollare. Alterna momenti più delicati a esplosioni sonore tipicamente Evanescence e riesce a trasmettere quella sensazione di speranza che attraversa tutto l’album senza perdere l’intensità emotiva.
Dopo questa parentesi arriva “How Do I Heal“, che parte lentamente accompagnata soltanto dalla voce di Amy Lee e dal suo pianoforte. È una ballad emozionante, da pelle d’oca, sulla scia di “My Immortal“ e “Missing“, capace di mettere in mostra tutta la maturità interpretativa raggiunta dalla cantante.
Si prosegue con “About Us“, un brano particolare che, pur non essendo tra i più immediati, riesce a rimanere in testa dopo pochi ascolti.
“Calm Down“, invece, mi ha riportato immediatamente alle atmosfere di “The Open Door“: un pezzo ricco di tensione, con quell’alternanza tra delicatezza e oscurità che ha sempre caratterizzato il lato più gotico della band.
Con “Self Destruct” gli Evanescence tornano a spingere sull’acceleratore. I synth sono in primo piano, le chitarre acquistano sempre più spazio fino a diventare protagoniste e la melodia resta impressa fin dal primo ascolto.
Subito dopo arriva “Forever With You“, un’altra ballad decisamente strappalacrime, che richiama in parte le emozioni di “Lost in Paradise“, ma con un’intensità ancora più dolorosa e intima.
Infine il viaggio si conclude con “Wild Open Heart“, una chiusura delicata ma perfetta per mettere il punto finale a questo santuario musicale, lasciando all’ascoltatore quella sensazione di pace e rifugio che rappresenta il vero filo conduttore dell’intero album.
Questa era la formazione di cui gli Evanescence avevano bisogno per tornare ai loro livelli. Diciamolo: l’ultimo disco, “The Bitter Truth“, aveva qualche brano carino, ma non era minimamente paragonabile ai suoi predecessori, né tantomeno a questo lavoro.
La nuova bassista Emma Anzai e Tim McCord, passato alla chitarra, insieme agli ormai consolidati Will Hunt alla batteria e Troy McLawhorn alla chitarra, rendono questa probabilmente la formazione migliore che la band abbia avuto negli ultimi anni. Gli Evanescence sembrano aver finalmente trovato il loro equilibrio e la chimica tra i musicisti si percepisce in ogni brano.
Sembra davvero di essere tornati indietro di venticinque anni e di aver finalmente ottenuto il degno successore di “Fallen“. Senza nulla togliere a “The Open Door” e agli album successivi, questo disco riesce a riportare quelle emozioni che molti fan aspettavano da tempo. Non è una semplice operazione nostalgia: prende le radici del sound che ha reso celebre la band e le ripropone con una maturità compositiva e vocale decisamente superiore.
Amy Lee è all’apice della sua forma, sia vocalmente sia dal punto di vista interpretativo, e la band suona compatta, ispirata e più affiatata che mai.
Beh… adesso non resta che aspettare di rivederli dal vivo!
