Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto modo di parlare con Liv Kristine, frontwoman dei Leaves’ Eyes, in occasione dell’uscita del suo disco solista “Vervain”. Ecco cosa è uscito fuori dalla nostra chiacchierata! 

– Ciao Liv, benvenuta su Heavyworlds.com, è un piacere averti qui. Come vanno le cose?

Grazie mille, sono appena ritornata dal primo “leg” del tour con le The Sirens, per di più, anche dallo speciale concerto anniversario dei Leaves’ Eyes al MFVF in Belgio. Sono veramente felice che sia il tour che il grande concerto siano andati bene. Ora, un po’ di sonno sarebbe fantastico.

– Parliamo del tuo nuovo “Vervain”, nome figo per questo disco. Di cosa parla e perchè hai scelto proprio questo nome per l’album?

Grazie! Sono lieta che ti piaccia. Prima di tutto, è un’erba santa con fiori viola o bianchi con punte delicate. E’ spesso associato a forze divine e anche supernaturali. Era chiamato “Tears Of Isis” nell’antico Egitto ed è citato nella breve storia “An Odour Of Verbena” di William Faulkner. Nella vita reale è quasi inodore. Ho scelto questo titolo perchè mi piace vedere l’amore, che è il filo conduttore nei testi in questo disco, come un sentimento divino e di potere. L’amore è divino – mi piace associarlo con la verbena. Sappiamo tutti che, però, l’amore può esser sia spettacolare che anche ti può far male. Mi piace girare la moneta, osservare il lato opposto dei sentimenti, avvenimenti e cose nei miei testi. Poi, in secondo luogo, che è anche interessante, è che questa erba è anche vista come la debolezza più nota di un vampiro. perchè il contatto fisico li brucerebbe, ad esempio diventerebbero febbricitanti e deboli. Sì, questo è cosa ti fa l’amore a volte.. ti brucia come l’inferno.

– Hai lavorato con Michelle Darkness per “Love Decay”. Com’è stato lavorare con lui e come è iniziata la collaborazione?

Dopo aver registrato la mia voce ho pensato: “il mio perfetto partner da duetto per Love Decay è Michelle Darkness” – nostro amico di lunga data. La sua voce è veramente incredibile e totalmente perfetta per questa canzone! E’ sempre un piacere lavorare con Michelle. Penso che gli End Of Green, la sua band, siano un gruppo eccezionale, comunque! Ho una buona notizia: il video (prodotto da Alexander Krull e Rainer “ZIPP” Franzen) per questa canzone è già online! State sintonizzati per più news e immagini belle!?

– Cosa mi dici della collaborazione con Doro Pesch per “Stronghold OF Angels”. Com’è iniziata e come è stato lavorare con lei??

Un sogno diventare realtà per me: Doro era lì al Mastersound Studio che registrava questo duetto tempo fa. “Stronghold Of Angels” è veramente una canzone powerballad da toglierti il respiro – Sapevo già che Doro sarebbe stata la mia perfetta partner in un duetto qui. Alex e Doro si son parlati al telefono, le abbiamo inviato la ballad e pochi giorni dopo era al Mastersound. Abbiamo avuto un sacco di storie folli da raccontarci.. alla fine, il secondo giorno, abbiamo quasi perso il suo treno! Abbiamo lasciato lo studio a 100km/h per la foresta, Doro che cercava di tenere tutto ciò che poteva..ma ce l’abbiamo fatta!
Dà sempre il massimo! Ho lavorato con lei sia sul palco che in studio. E’ sempre una che lavora duro e dà tutto per i fan. E’ fantastica, prima classe, una cantante incredibile.. e una delle persone più di buon cuore e belle che abbia mai conosciuto. Doro Pesch, sia come cantante che come persona, è veramente un modello da seguire per me. E’ spettacolare, veramente fantastica. Abbiamo tutti molto da imparare da lei. E’ la persona e artista più terra a terra che io conosca.

– Come ha funzionato questa volta il processo creativo per Vervain? Quando hai trovato del tempo per lavorare ai testi e alla musica considerando che canti anche nei Leaves Eyes e hai il progetto delle “The Sirens”?

La regola principale è quella di concentrarsi su un disco, una produzione. Io prendo sempre “disco per disco”. Questo è il mio modo di lavorare. Compongo e registro quando son pronta per quello. E’ veramente fantastico che noi abbiamo il nostro studio, Mastersound, con due stanze per registrare e una per provare. Questo significa che Alex, Tosso, io e chiunque frequenti lo studio può lavorare alle sue idee separatamente. “Vervain” è stato composto dopo il rilascio di “Symphonies Of The Night” dei Leaves Eyes. E’ importante finire una produzione prima di iniziarne una nuova per poter essere in grado di concentrarsi. Tuttavia, ho passato dei momenti durante il tour a pensare quali tipi di temi principali vorrei includere nei testi per “Vervain”. A volte raccolgo idee per la musica, linee vocali e testi quando son fuori dallo studio. Grazie al cielo ci sono i dispositivi per registrare sugli iphone! Potrei avere una idea brillante mentre aspetto al semaforo rosso in un attraversamento. Sono veramente felice di avere la mia squadra con me qui al Mastersound Studio. Thorsten Bauer, mio amico e chitarrista dei leaves’ Eyes, è il principale compositore dell’album, insieme a mio marito, Alexander, che mi ha aiutato a comporre e h prodotto il mio album. E’ stato, sicuro, registrato presso il nostro mastersound studio in Germania.

– So che questa domanda sarà abbastanza dura dato che è difficile prendere una decisione ma qual è la tua canzone preferita di questo disco e perchè?

E’ infatti una domanda difficile. “Love Decay”, cantata con Michelle Darkness, è una storia d’amore tragica – può essere interpretata come l’amore tra due umani che non potrebbe o non può avvenire, o una relazione tra un umano e un vampiro: “Possiamo essere amanti alla luce del giorno?” Tuttavia, canto anche dell’istinto di sentirsi attratti da qualcuno e non puoi evitare che accada nè negarlo. Mi piacerebbe anche citare “Hunter” che è un violento, basata sul ritmo, più dark rock metal pezzo di musica su cui posso usare di più la mia potenza vocale e estensione. I suoi testi, riguardanti l’istinto animale in noi esseri umani, sono alcuni dei più forti che abbia mai scritto. La canzone ha anche il suo punto di vista critico, che non accade molto spesso nella mia scrittura, ho realizzato dopo averlo scritto.

– Quale è stata la canzone più difficile e quale la più facile da comporre?

In verità sia la composizione che la registrazioni son andati abbastanza bene, l’intera produzione è stato un processo liscio. Direi che ci è servito circa un anno. E’ stato Tosso a comporlo principalmente, insieme con Alex, che l’ha anche prodotto al Mastersound studio, come menzionato sopra. Siamo una così grande squadra e Alex e Tosso conoscono le mie capacità e obiettivi. Quando ho detto a entrambi che avevo in mente di scrivere composizioni basate sui miei giorni precedenti, l’hanno apprezzato! A volte penso che quei due possano leggermi la mente! Joris, il mio batterista, ha fatto un lavoro pazzesco su “Vervain”!

– Stai facendo album solisti dal 1998. Cosa pensi che sia cambiato dai precedenti? Sicuramente sei cresciuta musicalmente ma credi ci siano dei cambiamenti significativi?

“Vervain”, che è il mio quinto album solista, è il mio album ritorno alle mie radici, per me un passo logico nella mia evoluzione artistica, è molto dark, pesante e doom. Ho sentito che era già il momento perfetto per mostrare tutta la mia esperienza artistica. Per di più, sto sempre ascoltato il mio cuore artistico e la mia mente. Sono veramente, veramente contenta di questa release e penso che molti fan dei Theatre of Tragedy e followers lo saranno anche loro. Personalmente, sono veramente contenta di quello che ho raggunto, dove sono ora con entrambe le mie gambe forti e ancorate fermamente al suolo, per di più, mi sento molto fortunata di avere un fanbase che mi ha seguito e dato un così potente e enorme potere, inspirando feedback durante tutti questi anni. Sono in giro da almeno 20 anni ora e mi sento alla grande! Mi piace far entrare dentro tutta la mia epserienza e i miei buoni momenti in una retrospettiva ma anche creativa luce.

D’altra parte mi sento tipo benedetta per essere in grado di combinare sia famiglia che musica. Sto in verità vivendo un sogno – canto e compongo da quando posso ricordarlo, anche prima che potessi essere in grado di parlare bene. Sono nata con due corde vocali incredibilmente forti e un orecchio eccezionale. Ero solita credere che tutti gli esseri umani avessero la musica nelle loro teste, tutto il giorno, a volte anche di notte, come me. Mi manca prendere lezioni di canto e studiar musica così nella mia vita, tuttavia, l’esperienza in studio e sul palco mi hanno fatto diventare l’artista con esperienza che son io oggi. Divento più saggia più saggia di album in album, di concerto a concerto.

– Tu e i Leaves Eyes avete suonato al Metal Female Voices Fest quest’anno. Com’è stata l’esperienza?

Assolutamente fantastica! I nostri fan hanno votato le canzoni che desideravano vedere nella nostra scaletta, per di più, abbiamo avuto diversi ospiti sul palco, più un nuovo, da lasciar senza fiato, includendo altre molte più sorprese- tutto in tutto in uno show unico e infiammato, fuoco e un sound potente! Che pubblico! I fan metal da tutto il mondo vengono a questo festival ogni anno.

– Stai considerando di cantare queste nuove canzoni live da qualche parte? Intendo forse un tour da solista è abbastanza difficile ma ci sarà possibilità di sentirti cantare qualcosa in qualche tour?

Legato al fatto che sto attualmente andando in tour con le The Sirens (giusto ora abbiamo appena finito il primo leg), ho aggiunto alcune canzoni da solista prese da “Vervain” alla setlist delle The Sirens. Anneke, Kari e io contribuiamo con sei canzoni ognuno dalle nostre carriere più due canzoni aggiuntive delle The Sirens, stile nuovo per questo tour. Quello è una scaletta di 100 minuti- è abbastanza un lungo concerto! Un numero di “perle” riassumendo il passato con le nostre band iniziali son incluse da tutte noi tre. Tutte noi tre cantiamo una manciata di canzoni prese dai nostri album solisti, come già ti dicevo. Facciamo a volte comparse singole, a volte due Sirens e a a volte tutte tre noi. So che i nostri fans aspettavano questo da un bel po’- e posso assicurarti che questo è magico.

– Considerando che tu debba scappare su un’isola deserta, quali cinque cose porteresti con te e perchè?

Pannello solare, la mia collezione di LP dei Black Sabbath, le mie scarpe da corsa, un sacco a pelo e un’ascia.

– E’ tutto per ora, grazie del tuo tempo. C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai tuoi fan o ai lettori di Heavyworlds?

Grazie davvero tanto di avermi intervistato! Grazie ai lettori di heavyworlds che mi seguono attraverso la mia carriera, album e tour – Spero di vedervi presto a uno dei nostri concerti!

– Hello Liv, welcome on Heavyworlds.com, it’s a pleasure to have you
here. How are the things going so far?

Thank you very much, i just returned from the first leg of The Sirens tour, moreover, from the Leaves’ Eyes special anniversary show at MFVF, Belgium. I am very happy that both the tour and the big show went so well. Now, a bit of sleep would be great!

– Let’s talk about your new “Vervain”, cool name for this album. What is
it about and why did you choose this name for the work?

Thank you! I’m glad you like it.
Firstly, it is a holy herb with purple or white or flowers on delicate spikes. It is
often associated with divine and other supernatural forces.
It was called “Tears of Isis” in ancient Egypt and is mentioned in William Faulkner’s short story “an Odour of Verbena”. In real life it’s nearly scentless. I chose this title because I see love, which is the “red line” in my lyrics on this album, as a divine feeling and power. Love is divine – I like to associate it with vervain.
We all know, though, that love can be both wonderful as well as it can hurt you. I enjoy turning the coin, observing the opposite side of feelings, happenings and things in my lyrics. Then, secondly, which is kind of interesting, is that this herb is also seen as a vampire’s most well-known weakness, because physical contact will burn them, i.e. become feverish and weak. Yes, this is what love sometimes does to you…it burns like hell.

– You have worked with Michelle Darkness in “Love Decay”. How was
working with him and how did the collaboration start?

After recording my own vocals I thought: my perfect duet partner on “Love Decay” is Michelle Darkness – our long-time friend! His voice is just incredible and absolutely perfect for this song! It’s always a pleasure working with Michelle. I think End of Green, his own band, is an excellent band, by the way! I have good news: the Videoclip (produced by Alexander Krull and Rainer “ZIPP” Fränzen) for this song is already online! Stay tuned for more news and great pictures!

– And what about the collaboration with Doro Pesch for “Stronghold Of
Angels”. How did it start and how was working with her?

A dream came true for me: Doro was here at Mastersound Studio recording this duet a while ago. “Stronghold of Angels” is truly one breathtaking powerballad – I just knew that Doro would be my perfect partner in duet here. Alex and Doro talked on the phone, we sent her the ballad, and a few days later she was here at Mastersound. We had so many crazy stories to exchange…in the end, the second day, we nearly missed her train! We left the studio with a 100km/h through the forest, Doro holding on to anything she could…but we made it!
She always gives her maximum! I have worked with her on stage and in the studio. She is always hard working and gives everything for her fans. She is amazing, first class, an incredible singer…and one of the most warm-hearted and lovely persons I have ever met.
Doro Pesch, both as a singer, and as a person, is definitely a role-model for me. She is wonderful, just fantastic. We all have a lot to learn from her. She is the most down-to-earth and honest person and artist I know.

– How did the creative process work this time for “Vervain”? When did
you find the time to work on the lyrics and the music considering you
also sing with Leaves Eyes and have “The Sirens” project?

The main rule is to concentrate on one album, one production. I always take “album by album”. That’s my way of working. I compose and record when I am ready for it. It’s really great that we have our own studio, Mastersound, with two recording rooms and one rehearsal room. This means that Alex, Tosso, I and whoever is present at the studio may work on his or her own ideas separately.
VERVAIN was composed after the release of Leaves’ Eyes SYMPHONIES OF THE NIGHT. It’s important to finish one production before starting a new one to be able to focus. However, I did spend some moments on tour figuring out what kind of main themes I would like to include in my lyrics for VERVAIN. Sometimes I gather idea for music, vocal lines and lyrics when I’m out of the studio. Thanks heaven there’s a recording option device on iPhones! I might have that killer idea when standing at the red light at a crossing;-)
I am so happy to have my team with me here at Mastersound Studio. Thorsten Bauer, my friend and guitar player of Leaves’ Eyes is the main composer of the album, next to my husband, Alexander, who co-composed and produced my album. It was, of course, recorded at our own Mastersound Studio in Germany.

– I know this question will be quite hard as it’s difficult to take a
decision but what’s your favourite song of this work and why?

That’s indeed a tricky question. “Love Decay”, sung with Michelle Darkness, is a tragic love story – it can be transferred to love between two humans that just couldn’t or can’t happen, or a relationship between a human and a vampire: “Can we be lovers in the light?” However, I am also singing about the instinct to feel attracted to someone and you can neither forbid it to happen nor deny it. I’d also like to mention “Hunters” which is a driving, beat-based, darker rock-metal piece of music on which I can use a lot of my vocal power and range. Its lyrics, concerning the animalistic instinct in us human beings, are some of the strongest I’ve ever written. The song also has a critical point of view to it, which does not happen very often in my writing, I realized myself after having written it.

– Which song was the most difficult and which one the easiest to write?

Actually both composing and recording went extremely went, the whole production was one smooth process. I would say we needed about a year. It was Tosso who mainly composed it, together with Alex, who also produced it at our own Mastersound Studio, as mentioned above. We are such a great team and Alex and Tosso know my abilities and goals. When I told both of them that I had in mind to write compositions based on my “earlier” days, they loved it! Sometimes I think the two of them can read my mind! Joris, my drummer, also did a killer job on Vervain!

– You have been making solo albums since 1998. What do you think has
changed from the previous ones? Of course you have grown musically but
do you think there are any other significant changes?
“Vervain”, which is my fifth solo album, is a back-to-my-own-roots album; to me a logical step in my artistic evolution, it’s darker, heavier and doom-inspired. I felt that it was just the perfect moment to let in all my artistic experience. Moreover, I am always listening to my artistic heart and mind. I am very, very happy about this release, and I think many Theatre of Tragedy fans and followers will be, too. Personally I am totally happy with what I have achieved, where I am standing now with both my legs strong and safely rooted to the ground, moreover, I feel blessed to have a fan base that has followed me and given me such an enormous power and positive, inspiring feedback throughout all these years. I’ve been around for at least 20 years now, and I feel great! I enjoy letting in all my experience and good moments in a retrospective but also creative light. Anyway I feel kind of blessed being able to combine both family and music. I am actually living a dream – I have been singing and composing for as long as I can remember, even before I was able to speak properly. I was born with two incredibly strong vocal chords and an outstanding hearing. I used to believe that all human beings had music in their heads, all day long, sometimes even at night, like myself. I missed taking singing lessons and studying music so far in my life, however, the experience in the studio and on stage has made me become the experienced artist I am today. I get wiser and wiser album by album, gig by gig.

– You and Leaves Eyes have played at Metal Female Voices Fest this year.
How was this experience?

Absolutely fantastic! Our fans voted for the songs they wished to see on our setlist, moreover, we had several guests on stage, plus a new, breathtaking stage setting, including many more surprises – all in all a unique show with a lot of flames, fire and a HUGE sound! What an audience! Metal fans from all over the world come to this festival, every year.

– Are you considering to sing these new songs live somewhere? I mean
maybe a solo tour is quite hard but will it be the possibility to hear
you sing something in one of your tours?

Due to the fact that I am currently touring with The Sirens (right now we just finished the 1st leg), I added a few of my solo songs from “Vervain” to the Sirens’ setlist. Anneke, Kari and myself contribute with six songs each from our careers, plus two additional Sirens songs, brand new for this tour. That’s a setlist of 100 minutes – that’s quite a long concert! A number of “pearls” summing up the past with our former bands are included from all three of us. All three of us play a handful of songs from our solo albums, as already mentioned. We sometimes do single appearances, sometimes two Sirens, and sometimes all three of us. I know that our fans have been waiting for this for quite a while – I can assure you this is magic.

– Considering you have to run off to a desert island, which five things
would you take with you and why?

Sun screen, my Black Sabbath LP collection, my fastest running shoes, a sleeping bag, an axe.
