In promozione per l’uscita del nuovo album “The Good Youth“, abbiamo avuto occasione di intervistare Jono Yates dei Blitz Kids che ci racconta un po’ della band, del nuovo disco e un po’ di se stesso.
– Ciao Jono, benvenuto su Heavyworlds.com, è un gran piacere averti qui. Come stai?
Sto bene, è un piacere essere qua.
– Partiamo dall’inizio, ci puoi riassumere la vostra storia. Come è nata la band?
Ci siamo incontrati tutti a scuola e abbiamo iniziato a fare musica insieme. E’ davvero così banale. Io e Nic abbiamo militato in band insieme da quando avevamo 14 anni. Questa ci è sfuggita di mano hahaha.
– E cosa ci puoi dire sulla scelta di “Blitz Kids” come nome della band?
Il nonno di Joe era in una piccola gang ai tempi della guerra e quando le sirene dei bombardamenti aerei si spegnevano, andavano nelle strade, giocavano a calcio e passavano del tempo tra di loro. Probabilmente la cosa più punk rock di sempre. Si chiamavano Blitz Kids e abbiamo pensato che fosse un nome ‘”malato”.
– “The Good Youth” è il vostro nuovo lavoro. Ha una copertina interessante. Qual’è il significato del titolo e della copertina? Ci sono dei concepts dietro quest’album?
E’ tutto collegato al concetto di trattenere la tua giovinezza e non permettere a nessuno di portartela via. Nessuno cresce mai realmente. Riguarda il conservare la vitalità e la positività della tua gioventù. Non ascoltare nessuno che provi a classificarti o rinchiuderti in una scatola. Puoi essere chiunque tu voglia e essere orgoglioso di farlo. Ed è questo ciò a cui fanno riferimento il titolo e la copertina.
– Dopo aver ascoltato “The Good Youth”, ho notato che il sound è più potente dei vostri lavori precedenti. C’è un motivo in particolare per questo cambiamento?
Non abbiamo deciso coscientemente di cambiare sound. E’ solo successo. Abbiamo passato molto più tempo su questo lavoro e penso che sia questo ad aver fatto la differenza.
– Penso che sia il vostro miglior lavoro, intendo dire, tutte le canzoni sono buone e ”catchy”, alcune sono più cariche, altre meno, ma ottimo comunque.

– Qual’è la tua traccia preferita dell’album e perchè?
La mia traccia preferita è “Title Fight”. E’ una canzone che riguarda l’aver a che fare e vivere con l’ansia. E’ una sofferenza orribile, e molte persone ne soffrono in silenzio, incluso me. Questa canzone è me che rappresenta. Spero che le persone si ritrovino in questa canzone.
– Puoi dirmi come funziona il vostro processo creativo?
Iniziamo acusticamente, con un input o una melodia. Poi scriviamo lo scheletro di tutta la canzone. Facciamo un salto in sala prove e iniziamo a provare riffs e idee per arricchire il brano. Alla fine, mettiamo tutti gli ingredienti nella pentola ed ecco a voi una canzone dei Blitz Kids.
– Quali sono le vostre influenze e background musicali?
Veniamo tutti da background musicali diversi. Io e Nic abbiamo iniziato come due punk, prima di aprire la nostra mente musicale a tutto il resto. Matt ama tutto ciò che è strano. Molto il prog e post-rock. Joe ama Motown e conosce ogni testo di molte canzoni nella classifica. Non sono sicuro di come funzioni per noi, ma funziona.
– State pensando a nuove date o a un tour europeo dopo l’uscita dell’album?
Gireremo l’Europa con i All Time Low tra febbraio e marzo.
– Siete stati anche la band di supporto per Mallary Know vero? Com’è stata quest’esperienza?
E’ stato fantastico. Siamo buoni amici con i ragazzi, e sono stati veramente gentili a farci suonare come supporto principale del loro tour più grande. Ci siamo divertiti tanto di più rispetto a quanto ci divertiamo di solito.
– Avete mai avuto episodi strani o divertenti con i fans durante i vostri tour o tra di voi durante le registrazioni dell’album?
In realtà no. Amiamo parlare con i nostri fans dopo i concerti e nessuno di loro è strano hahaha. Meno male.
– Con chi vorresti collaborare per un futuro progetto musicale?
Jay Z. O avere Rihanna che canta il ritornello su una melodia. Qualcuno sicuramente massiccio. Giusto per divertimento.
– Immagina di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Puoi portare solo 5 cose con te. Cosa sarebbero?
iPhone, chitarra, la griglia di George Forman, accendino e alcolici.
– Cosa fai nella vita? Intendo dire, sei un musicista e hai una band. Ma hai anche un altro lavoro?
No! Questo è tutto. Tutte le uova nel paniere. Però per ora funziona abbastanza bene.
– Cosa pensi del nostro paese, l’Italia? Sei già stato qui o hai in mente di venirci? Se sei già stato qui, cosa ti è piaciuto e cosa non?
Io amo l’italia. Ci son andato per la prima volta un anno fa per visitare Roma. La storia lì è stimolante. Torneremo per suonare, il che è un sogno che diventa realtà. Penso che Alessandro Del Piero sia il mio italiano preferito.

– Hi Jono! Welcome on Heavyworlds.com, we are very glad to have you here. How are you?
I’m good! It’s nice to be here.
– Let’s start from the beginning, could you sum us up your story? In which way the band got formed?
We all met at school and just started playing music together. It’s as simple as that really. Me and Nic have been in bands together since we were 14. This one just got out of hand haha.
– And what about the choice of “Blitz Kids” as the band name?
Joe’s grandad used to be in a little gang in the war, and when the air raid sirens went off, they just took to the streets and played football and just hung out. Probably the most punk rock thing ever. They called themselves the Blitz Kids, and we thought it was a sick name.
– “The Good Youth” is your upcoming work. It has an interesting cover art. What’s the meaning of the tile and also of the artwork? And is there any concepts behind this album?
It’s all linked to the concept of holding on to your youth and not letting anyone take it away from you. Nobody ever really grows up. It’s about cherishing the vitality and positivity of your youth. Not listening to anybody who tries to define you or put you in a box. You can be whoever you are and be proud of that. That’s what the art and title are about.
– After listening to “The Good Youth”, I noticed its sound is more powerful than the previous ones. Is there any particular reason why the sound has changed?
We didn’t make a conscious decision to change the sound. It just kind of happened. We spent a lot more time on the record and I think that’s made all the difference.
I think it’s your best work, I mean all the songs are good and catchy, some are really energic and some less, but good anyway.

– What’s your favourite song of this new album and why?
My favourite song is ‘Title Fight’. It’s a song about dealing and living with anxiety. It’s a horrible affliction, and a lot of people suffer from it in silence, including me. This song is just me getting everything off my chest. I hope people can relate.
– Could you tell us something about how the writing process works for you?
We start off acoustically, with a hook, or a melody. Then just write the whole song skeleton. Then we’ll hop in the rehearsal room and start jamming riffs and ideas to flesh it all out. In the end, we’ve all thrown our ingredients in the pot dnt it’s a Blitz Kids song!
– What are your music influences and also your musical backgrounds?
We all come from totally different backgrounds, musically. Me and Nic started out as a pair of punks, before expanding our musical minds to everything behind that world. Matt loves anything weird. A lot of prog and post-rock. Joe loves Motown and knows every lyric to most songs in the chart. I’m not sure how it works for us, but it does!
– Are you planning new dates/ an european tour after releasing the album?
We’re touring Europe with All Time Low in February and March!
– You were also support act for Mallary Knox, right? How was this experience?
It was great. We’re good friends with the boys, and it was really good of them to let us play as main support on their biggest tour to date. We had more fun than we’ve ever had.
– Have you ever had some “strange” or funny episodes with fans during one of your tours or between you guys during the recording session for this album?
Not really. We like to chat to all of our fans after shows, and none of them are strange haha. Thankfully.
– Who would you like to work with as a future collaboration for a song or new project?
Jay Z. Or have Rihanna sing a chorus on a tune. Someone absolutely massive. Just for a laugh.
– Imagine you had to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you. What would they be?
iPhone, Guitar, George Forman grill, Lighter, Booze.
– What do you do in life? I mean you are musicians and a band.. But do you also have another job?
Nope! This is it. All eggs in one basket. It’s worked out pretty well so far though.
– What do you guys think about our country, Italy? Have you ever been here or planning to come sometimes? If you had been here, what did you guys like and what you didn’t?
I love Italy. I went for the first time last year to visit Rome. The history there is inspiring. We’re coming back to play, which is a dream come true. I think Alessandro Del Piero is my favourite Italian.
