Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto modo di scambiare due chiacchiere con Leah, cantante dell’omonimo progetto, in occasione dell’uscita del suo nuovo disco Kings & Queen. Di seguito ciò che ne è uscito dalla nostra conversazione.

– Ciao Leah, benvenuta su Heavyworlds.com, ci fa molto piacere averti qui. Come vanno le cose?

Ciao! Grazie a voi. Le cose vanno alla grande.

– Il tuo nuovo album “Kings & Queens” è uscito da poco. Vi è un concept alla base? E la copertina ha un significato particolare?

Si, è stato rilasciato a fine gennaio. Non doveva esserci un concept, ma nella sua stesura, molto spesso, è venuta fuori una somiglianza fra i temi. La copertina è un riassunto carino del tema/concept dell’album, cosa che l’artwork dovrebbe sempre essere nella mia modesta opinione. Rappresenta un tema di regni, pedine degli scacchi, imperi, e molti altri intrighi che compaiono in una scena politica e relazionale.

– Se ti chiedessi di fare un paragone fra questo grandissimo nuovo album e il tuo lavoro di debutto “Of Earth and Angels “, cosa ci diresti? Vi è sicuramente una buona crescita musicale e sembra che il sound stia procedendo verso qualcosa di più epico e angelico, probabilmente grazie agli ospiti che hanno collaborato con te stavolta: Timo Somers, Sander Zoer and Barend Courbois.

Dico che ho avuto un inizio d’impatto con OE&A e ora ho un’identità più chiara con K&Q. E si, mi ha aiutata tanto avere degli ospiti in questo album, in quanto loro hanno delle identità ben definite nel loro modo di suonare. Ha fatto la grande differenza.

– Parlando di queste collaborazioni, com’è stato lavorare con Timo Somers (Delain), Sander Zoer (ex- Delain) and Barend Courbois (Blind Guardian). Vi siete incontrati o avete lavorato attraverso Internet? In che modo questo ha influenzato il tuo processo creativo?

Abbiamo lavorato principalmente attraverso Internet, il che è piuttosto folle. Sicuramente non è il modo migliore. Avrei preferito lavorare di persona elaborando le cose in mesi nella stessa stanza. Ma ai giorni nostri è possibile fare tutto a distanza, il che apre verso molte possibilità. Inoltre, lavorare con persone così talentuose ha reso tutto più facile!

– Come hai lavorato nel creare le linee vocali e i testi? Sento che usi diversi registri vocali nelle canzoni, vero?

Quando scrivo canzoni generalmente parto da una progressione di accordi che mi piace e quasi immediatamente posso immaginare una melodia. Se sono davvero dentro la melodia, il testo verrà fuori contemporaneamente. Poi vi è la paura di ricordarlo tutto e registrarlo prima che lo dimentichi o prima che cambi verso qualcos’altro. Se non ho un testo, ho una buona idea su come posizionare le parole, e mi servirà un pò di tempo per trovare quelle giuste. Si, probabilmente uso diversi registri. Mi piace avere una vocalità flessibile, laddove posso. Principalmente canto quel che sento più adatto alla canzone.

– Una domanda che mi nasce spontanea: cosa puoi dirmi della durata dell’album? Molte delle canzoni durano più di 5 minuti. Vi è un motivo o è stato tutto naturale?

E’ stato totalmente naturale. Alcune di queste avevano semplicemente bisogno di esserlo, per rendere giustizia alla canzone. Ne ho limitate altre in ogni caso, in quanto era un po’ troppo.

– Qual è la tua canzone preferita dell’album in questo momento e perchè?

Cambia da momento a momento. Oggi adoro “There is No Farewell”. Mi piacciono la scansione in 6/8 e la progressione della canzone, le melodie e le armonie.

– Quale canzone è stata la più facile da scrivere e quale la più difficile e perchè?

Sono state scritte tutte senza sforzi, ma un paio sono venute fuori “accidentalmente”. Intendo. Stavo soltanto giocando e sono incappata nella canzone. E’ successo senza neanche provarci. Sarebbero “In the Palm of Your Hand” and “The Crown”. “Enter the Highlands” è stata la più difficile in quanto è la più progressive di tutte.

– Stai programmando un tour per promuovere questo grande lavoro? Piani futuri riguardo qualche show in Europa o un nuovo album?

Non ci sono programmi al momento. Mi piacerebbe farlo un giorno. Sto già pensando al nuovo album, ma penso che mi fermerò ad annusare le rose per un po’ 🙂

– Un’altra cosa a cui non posso smettere di pensare è la grandiosità della tua voce, è davvero fantastica! Come hai iniziato a cantare? Hai seguito corsi o scuole? E cosa fai per mantenerla allenata?

Grazie! Ho iniziato a cantare prima dell’adolescenza. Principalmente imitando i miei cantanti preferiti, poi ho conosciuto la mia vera voce. Come per qualsiasi cosa, con l’allenamento e l’ascolto di me stessa, ho trovato le mie debolezze e i punti di forza e ho lavorato su quelli. Non ho avuto molte lezioni formali in ogni caso, ma adoro un programma chiamato “Singing Success”. Mi ha aiutata tanto e probabilmente è l’unico programma mai usato.

– Quali sono le tue influenze principali? E come hai approcciato alla scena musicale?

Per come funzionano le influenze, tutto ciò che mi ispira diventa un’influenza. Una canzone, uno stato d’animo, un film, un libro, la mia immaginazione..non c’è fine. Per quanto riguarda le influenze musicali, non c’è un artista particolare. Mi capita spesso di incappare in una canzone a caso su Youtube, o di sentire la musica di sottofondo in un film e subito ho in mente un’intera nuova canzone! A volte devo correre alla tastiera, finchè riesco a ricordarla. Sono principalmente un’artista da registrazione per ora, per cui il mio approccio è principalmente quello online.

– Cosa pensi dell’influenza di internet nel mercato musicale? Intendo dire, le persone hanno smesso di comprare gli album fisici se possono scaricarli, magari illegalmente. E’ una vergogna!

Cerco di guardare al suo lato positivo. Internet non va da nessuna parte e la condivisione dei file non va da nessuna parte. Lo vedo come una strategia di vendita libera e di promozione. So che i miei veri fan mi supporteranno. E la prova è nel dolce: la mia raccolta fondi Indiegogo. Sono sicura che le persone che hanno condiviso i miei file mi hanno anche supportata quando ne avevo bisogno. I tempi cambiano. Non credo sarebbe producente per me resistervi, ma trovare nuove strade per avere successo e dare valore al mercato musicale.

– Sei mai stata in Italia? Se si, dove? Se no, cosa vorresti visitare?

Non ci sono mai stata..ma mi piacerebbe? Sicuramente vorrei vedere tutto ciò che interessa ai turisti, ma altrettanto mi piacerebbe avere un vero senso della cultura e andare in qualche piccolo paesino per sperimentare la vera vita…e provare il vino locale. 🙂

– Immagina di scappare su un’isola deserta. Puoi portare solo 5 cose con te. Quali sarebbero e perchè?

Oddio. Difficile. Avrei bisogno di Internet. Per cui, se avessi un tablet con l’accesso a Internet, sopravviverei! Potrei scoprire su Google come accendere un fuoco, quali piante potrei mangiare, ecc. Avrei l’accesso ai libri…non potrei sopravvivere senza leggere tutti i giorni. Davvero, tutto ciò di cui avrei bisogno sarebbe il cibo, un rifugio, l’abbigliamento, internet e qualche strumento musicale. La vita sarebbe fantastica!

– Hello Leah, welcome on Heavyworlds.com, we are really glad to have you here. How are things going so far?

Hi! Thanks for having me. Things are going very well.

– Your new album “Kings & Queens” came out recently. Is there any concept behind this album? And is there a particular meaning of the cover artwork?

Yes, it was released at the end of January. It wasn’t meant to be a concept album, but I have found that when I write, a common theme often arises. The artwork is a nice summary of the theme/concept of the album, which is what artwork should do in my humble opinion. It represents a theme of kingdoms, chess pieces, empires, and many intricacies that occur on a political and relational scale.

– If I ask you to compare this great new work with your debut album “Of Earth and Angels “, what would you say? There is certainly a good growth musically and it seems the sound developed more into something epic and angelic maybe also thanks to the guests that worked with you this time: Timo Somers, Sander Zoer and Barend Courbois.

I would say though I started pretty strong on OE&A I have a more clear identity on K&Q. And yes, it really helped having the guests on this album, since they have such strong identities in their playing as well. It made a big difference.

– Talking about these collaborations, how was working with Timo Somers (Delain), Sander Zoer (ex- Delain) and Barend Courbois (Blind Guardian). Did you meet each other or did you work through the internet? And how did all of this influence your creative process?

We mainly worked through the internet, which is pretty wild. It’s certainly not the most ideal way. I would prefer working in person and hashing things out for months in the same room. But these days you can do almost anything from a distance, which opens up a lot of possibilities. Also, working with such talented people made it much easier!

– How did you work to create the vocal lines and the lyrics? I do hear you also used different vocal registers in every songs, don’t you?

When I write songs, I usually start with some kind of chord progression that I like and almost instantly I will hear a melody. If I’m really in the groove part of the lyrics will come to me at the same time too. Then it’s a feat to try and remember it all and record it before I forget or before it morphs into something else. If I don’t have the lyrics, I have a good idea of where and how the lyrics need to fit, and will take some time to write the right ones. I probably did use different registers. I like to have some flexibility in vocals if I can. Mainly I just sang what I felt suited the song.

– A question that is quite spontaneous: what could you tell me about the length of the album? A lot of songs are longer than 5 minutes. Is there any reason for that or was it that natural?

It was entirely natural. Some of them just needed to be that way to do the songs justice. I did trim some of them down though, since it was a bit much.

– Which is your favourite song of the album in this moment and why?

It changes from time to time. Today I’m enjoying “There is No Farewell”. I like the 6/8 timing and the progression of the song, the melodies and harmony. I like the monks too. 🙂

– Which song was the easiest to write and which one the most difficult one and why?

They were all written pretty effortlessly, but a couple were written by “accident”. Meaning, I was just goofing around and stumbled upon the song. It happened almost without trying. That would be “In the Palm of Your Hand” and “The Crown”. “Enter the Highlands” was most difficult because it’s the most progressive of them all.

– Are you planning any tours to promote this great work? Any future plans reguarding shows maybe in Europe or another album soon?

There aren’t any currently plans. I would love to do that one day. I am already thinking about the next album, but I think I will stop and smell the roses for a while 🙂

– Another thing I can not stop thinking about is your great voice, it’s amazing! How did you get into singing? Did you attend any courses or school? And how did you work to maintain your voice good?

Thank you! I began singing when I was a pre-teen. Just mainly mimicking my favorite singers and then realized I had my own voice. Like anything, with practice and really listening to myself, I found my weak and strong points and worked on them. I haven’t had much by way of formal lessons. But I do love a program called “Singing Success”. It’s been very helpful to me and is probably the only program I’ll use.

– Which are your main music influences? And how did you approach the music scene?

As far as influences go, anything that inspires me becomes an influence. A song, a mood, a film, a book, my imagination… there’s no end. For musical influences, there’s not one particular artist. I often stumble upon a random song on Youtube or hear some background music in a film and I already hear a whole new song in my head! Sometimes I have to run to the keyboard while I can still remember it. I’m mainly a recording artist for now, so my approach to the scene is mostly online.

– What do you think about the internet influence to the music business? I mean people stopped to buy the physical album as they can download maybe also illegally the artists work. It’s a shame!

I try to look at the positive side of it. The internet is not going away, and file sharing is not going away. I see it as free marketing and promotion. I know that my true fans will support me. And the proof is in the pudding: my Indiegogo fundraiser. I’m sure people who did file share also supported me when I needed them. The times are changing. I think it’s not useful for me to resist that, but find new ways to succeed and bring value to the music market.

– Have you ever been to Italy? If yes, where did you go? If not, what would you like to visit?

I have not… but would love to! Of course, I would love to see the touristy things, but I also would love to get a true sense of the culture and go to some small village and experience real life… and try out the local wine. 🙂

– Imagine to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you. What would they be and why?

Oh my. That’s a tough one. I need the internet. So if I could have some kind of tablet with internet access, I would survive! Then I could google how to start a fire, which plants I could eat, etc. I would also have access to books… I can’t survive without reading every day. Really, all I would need is food, shelter, clothing, the internet and some musical instrument like a guitar. Life would be great!
