Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto modo di scambiare due chiacchiere con Marcela Bovio, cantante degli Stream Of Passion, in occasione dell’uscita del loro nuovo disco “A War Of Our Own”. La band, come già molti di voi sapranno, sgestisce le cose da sè ora ed è stato un piacere vedere quanto siano disponibili e veloci con la richiesta di questa intervista.

– Ciao Marcela, benvenuta su Heavyworlds.com, come stai?

Sto bene, grazie per avermelo chiesto!

– Recentemente avete avuto il release party del nuovo disco. Com’è stata la reazione dei fans alle nuove canzoni?

Molto positiva! Siamo veramente felici di aver ricevuto esclusivamente commenti positivi sull’album.

– Parliamo del nuovo disco. Prima di tutto: congratulazioni per aver raggiunto il denaro necessario per realizzare questo nuovo album, voi ragazzi avete avuto un grande supporto dai vostri fan. Come vi è venuta in mente questa idea della raccolta fondi?

Non eravamo molto felici con la vecchia etichetta, quindi abbiamo iniziato a cercare diverse opzioni per rilasciare questo disco. Ho sentito di altri artisti che hanno finanziato con successo il loro album con una raccolta fondi da persone, quindi ho pensato “Perchè non provare?”. Era sicuramente un rischio quello di fare le cose in questo modo, ma guardandoci dietro siamo veramente felici di averlo fatto; non solo ci ha dato molta più libertà nel fare le cose come le volevamo, ma ci ha anche ulteriormente avvicinati ai nostri fan.

– “A War Of Our Own” è il nome del nuovo album. E’ collegato chiaramente alla battaglia che avete dovuto affrontare per questo nuovo disco, vero? Ha un diverso significato?

E’ sicuramente collegato alla nostra lotta come band, ma anche a tutti gli altri tipi di lotta che hanno ispirato le diverse canzoni: la lotta di famiglie e amici contro il cancro e la depressione, ad esempio; la situazione attuale nel Messico e le battaglie contro la droga che stanno avvenendo lì sono state una grande fonte di ispirazione per me.

– La copertina è veramente bella. E’ come se ci dicesse “siamo liberi”. E’ il suo significato giusto?

Si! E’ esattamente il concetto dietro alla copertina: essere liberi dai nostri ostacoli, rialzarsi nonostante le avversità.

– Quest’album è stato creato senza una direzione da un’etichetta discografica. Qual’è stata la differenza del lavorare con una label e da lavorare da soli? Avete incontrato dei pro o contro?

Il più grande pro è stato quello di poter prendere tutte le decisioni su come fare e promuovere il disco. Con la nostra label vecchia, devo chiarirlo, non eravamo mai forzati a fare un certo tipo di musica, ma abbiamo avuto la sensazione che la direzione che stavamo prendendo non era quella che loro avrebbero preferito, e questo si è riflettuto nel livello di supporto e comunicazione che avevamo con loro.

Il più grande contro del fare tutto da noi è che abbiamo più lavoro da fare; molto più di quello che avevamo mai pensato! Ma lo facciamo ancora molto volentieri. Sappiamo benissimo perchè stiamo facendo ciò che stiamo facendo, e non solo realizzare un album ma anche consegnarlo a mano a sconosciuti e sperare nel meglio.

– E come ha funzionato il processo creativo questa volta? Avevate già le tracce pronte prima della raccolta fondi, giusto?

Alcune di queste; stavamo ancora scrivendo alcune canzoni durante e dopo la campagna, penso questo si sia anche riflettuto un po’ nello spirito delle ultime canzoni.

Ma il processo era abbastanza simile a quello dell’album precedente: di solito arrivo con un’idea base che lavoriamo con Johan van Stratum (il nostro bassista) e Joost Van Den Broek (il nostro produttore); dopo questo, definiamo i dettagli e mettiamo a punto bene con il resto della band.

– Qual’è la tua canzone preferita di questo disco?

Questa volta è veramente difficile da scegliere! Sono veramente felice di come sia uscito fuori questo album. Cambia ogni giorno (la canzone preferita intende ndr), ma ora sto pensando a “Monster”, perchè credo rifletta perfettamente dove vogliamo andare con la nostra musica.

– Quale è stata la più facile da scrivere e quale la più difficile?

“Don’t let go” è venuta fuori molto facilmente, quasi subito quando ho iniziato a scriverla. Niente del resto è stato difficile, veramente.

– Ci puoi dire qualcosa al riguardo sulla canzone per la piccola Mara?

Mara aveva 3 anni ed era la figlia di colui che ci promuove, Bart Dietvorst, che ha recentemente perso la battaglia contro il neuroblastoma (una vera forma aggressiva di cancro nei bambini). Ho iniziato a scrivere la canzone “Secrets” quando era ancora viva, durante un concerto di beneficenza che abbiamo fatto per lei per aiutare i suoi genitori a raccogliere abbastanza soldi per portarla in America e farle avere una nuova cura che avrebbe migliorato le sue aspettative di vita. Lo show e la raccolta sono stati un gran successo, e sono andati anche in America, ma sfortunatamente la cura non ha aiutato. Quindo dopo stavo scrivendo il testo per la canzone, è sembrato adatto scrivere qualcosa su come sia ingiusta la battaglia contro questa malattia.

– Quali sono i piani per il futuro dei Stream Of Passion? Intendo dire, come è stato promuovere l’album da soli? Qualche tour o nuove date?

Si, stiamo pianificando alcuni concerti in Olanda, Regno unito e inghilterra, e faremo anche un paio di festival. Sperimao di aggiungere altre date dopo l’estate e continuare a promuovere il disco in Europa.

– Hai anche collaborato nel nuovo disco dei Mayan e hai anche cantato con loro sul palco. Com’è stato collaborare con loro? E’ un genere totalmente diverso dai SOP.

Totalmente diverso ma mi sono veramente divertita! E’ veloce, rumoroso e brutale e questo è un buon cambiamento. Ho potuto fare cose diverse con la mia voce, mi è piaciuto.

– Penso tu sia una delle migliori voci che io abbia mai sentito. Come hai iniziato a cantare? E cosa mi dici del violino, quando hai iniziato?

Ho sempre cantato da quando ero molto giovane, e ho preso lezioni per, direi, 15 anni già. Penso che ci sia sempre qualcosa di nuovo da imparare e da migliorare, quindi continuo a studiare. Per quanto riguarda il violino, ho iniziato a prendere lezioni quando avevo 16 anni; mi piace un sacco la capacità di trasmettere che ha.

– C’è qualche artista con cui ti piacerebbe collaborare in futuro?

Mi piacerebbe poter cantare con Anneke Van Gierbersgen qualche volta!

– Siete stati in Italia solo una volta giusto? E’ stato quando avete fatto il tour con gli Epica e gli Xandria, ricordo. Cosa ti è piaciuto del nostro paese? Quali altri posti ti piacerebbe visitare?

Io amo le persone in Italia! Mi ricordano un po’ lo spirito latino americano, a volte mi manca 🙂 persone veramente calorose e belle, sono diventati tutti pazzi durante i concerti. Ho apprezzato veramente.

– Immagina che la tua casa sia in fiamme (persone e animali si salvano) Devi salvare 5 album considerando che tu li abbia tutti. quali sceglieresti e perchè?

Risposta molto noiosa, ma ho tutto digitale ai giorni d’oggi quindi prenderei il mio iPod 😛

– E’ tutto per ora, grazie del tuo tempo. C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai lettori di heavyworlds o ai tuoi fan?

– Hello Marcela! Welcome on Heavyworlds.com, how are you doing so far?

I’m doing great, thanks for asking!

– You’ve had your new album release party recently. How was the reaction of the fans to the new songs?

Very positive! We’re really happy we’ve been receiving nothing but positive comments about the album.

– Let’s talk about the new album. First of all: congrats for achieving the money for making this album, you guys had a great support from your fans. How did this idea of fund raising come up with your mind?

We weren’t very happy with our old record label, so we started looking into other options for releasing this album. I had heard of other artists that successfully funded their album through crowdfunding, so I thought “Why not give it a try?”. It was of course a risk to do things this way, but looking back we’re so happy we did this; not only it gave us more freedom to do things exactly like we want to, but it also brought us so much closer to our fans.

– “A War Of Our Own” is the name of this new album. Is it clearly linked to the war you guys had to face for your new work, right? Has it a different meaning?

It’s definitely linked to our own struggle as a band, but also to all other kinds of battles that inspired the different songs: the struggle of family and friends against cancer and depression, for instance; the current situation in Mexico and the drug wars taking place there were also a huge source of inspiration for me.

– The cover art is a good one too. It’s like to express “we are free”. Is it its meaning or not?

Yes! That’s definitely the idea behind it: breaking free from our obstacles, rising above adversity.

– This work has been created without a label direction. Which was the difference between working with a label and being free? Did you have to face up any pro’s or con’s during the work?

The biggest pro was to be able to make all the decisions as to how to make and promote the album. With our old label, I have to clarify, we were never forced to make a certain kind of music; but we had the feeling that the direction we were taking was not what they would have preferred, and it reflected in the level of support and communication we had with them.
The biggest con of doing everything ourselves is that we have a lot more work in our hands; much more than we ever thought of! But still we do everything very gladly; we know exactly why we are doing what we are doing, and not just making and album, handing it over to strangers and hoping for the best.

– And how did the creative process work this time? You already had the tracks ready before the fund raising started, right?

Some of them; we were still writing some songs during and after the campaign, I think it also reflected a little bit in the spirit of the latest songs. But the process was quite similar to that of the previous album: I mostly come up with a basic idea, that we work on with Johan van Stratum (our bass player) and Joost van den Broek (our producer); after this we define the details and fine tune the arrangements with the rest of the band.

– Which song of this album is your favourite one?

This time is really hard to choose! I’m so happy with how this album turned out… So it changes a bit per day, right now I’m thinking of “Monster” because I think it very nicely reflects where we want to go with our music.

– Which one was the easiest to write and which one the most difficult?

“Don’t Let Go” came out really easily, almost instantly when I started writing it. None of the rest was very difficult, really.

– Could you tell us something about the song for the little girl Mara?

Mara was the 3 year old daughter of our booker Bart Dietvorst, who recently lost her battle to neuroblastoom (a very aggressive form of cancer in children). I started writing the song “Secrets” when she was still alive, during a benefit show that we played for her; to help her parents gather enough money to take her to the US and get her a new kind of treatment that would improve her life expectations. The show and their funding were a great success, and they did make it to America but unfortunately the treatment didn’t help… So when later on I was writing the lyrics for the song it seemed suiting to write something about how unfair the battle against this disease is.

– What are the plans for the future for Stream Of Passion? I mean, how are you going to promote by yourself this new album? Any tour or new dates?

Yes! We have some shows planned in Holland, the UK and England, and we’re doing a couple of festivals as well. We hope to add some more tour dates after the summer and keep promoting the album around Europe.

– You also collaborated in MaYaN’s new work and of course sang on stage with them. How was working with them? It’s a totally different genre from Stream Of Passion ones.

Totally different, but I really enjoy it as well! It’s fast, loud and brutal and that’s a nice change. I get to do very different things with my voice, I really like that as well.

– I think you are one of the best voices I have ever heard. How did you start singing? And what about playing violin? When did you start?

I’ve been singing since I was very young, and I have been taking lessons for I’d say 15 years already; I think there’s always something new to learn and room for improvement so I keep studying! As for the violin, I started taking lessons when I was 16 years old; I really love the emotiveness it has.

– Is there any artist you would like to collaborate with in the future?

I’d love to be able to sing with Anneke van Gierbersgen sometime!

– You have been in Italy only once, right? It was when touring with Epica and Xandria, I remember. What did you enjoy in our country? Where else would you like to go visiting?

I loved the people in Italy! They remind me a little bit of the Latin American spirit I miss sometimes 🙂 Very warm and nice people, they went totally crazy during the shows! I really appreciate that.

– Imagine your house is on fire (people and animals will get safe). You have to save 5 albums, considering you have all of them. Which one would you choose and why?

Very lame answer, but I’ve got everything digital nowadays so I’d take my iPod 😛
