Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto occasione di scambiare due chiacchiere con Miguel Angel , fondatore dei “Tears Of Martyr”. Intervistati per la prima volta sul nostro portale, Miguel ci parla della band e del loro ultimo lavoro.
– Ciao e benvenuto su Heavyworlds.com. E’ un piacere averti qui. Come state?
Ciao, stiamo abbastanza bene, grazie per averci dato l’opportunità di parlarti e condividere ciò con i lettori di Heavyworlds.com
– Cosa mi dici della storia della band? Come vi siete incontrati e come avete formato il gruppo?
Beh, la nostra storia è iniziata un po’ di anni fa. Io sono il membro fondatore della band e a quei tempi (parlo degli anni 90) ho riunito un po’ di amici e ho formato una band metal per suonare le canzoni che vedevamo nei video. Volevamo solo divertirci e fare un po’ di casino! All’improvviso ho realizzato che era troppo tardì per uscire fuori dal Metal.
– Ho già recensito e ascoltato il vostro nuovo album “Tales”, che già adoro, e non ho potuto non notare una somiglianza con gli Epica, intendo dire soprattutto per i duetti voce femminile e voce maschile growl come Simone Simons /Mark Jansen. Sono loro la vostra principale ispirazione?
Gli Epica sono un’ottima band e persone veramente simpatiche, abbiamo aperto un loro concerto a Madrid nel 2010. Ma per essere onesti, non prendiamo ispirazione da quello che fanno gli altri. I Tears Of Martyr già combinavano voce growl con voce lirica quando abbiamo iniziato, nel lontano 1995.
– Qual’è il concept dietro “Tales”? E quale è il significato dietro la copertina?
“Tales” può sembrare un album concettuale a prima vista, ma lo considero più come un libro con storie diverse. Le canzoni non sono direttamente collegate tra di loro e ogni personaggio ha la sua storia. Dico sempre che sono come vicini di casa dello stesso universo “Tears Of Martyr”.
Riguardo la copertina, questo riguarda Adrian comunque, rappresenta lo scrittore seduto di fronte al suo libro di storie, scuotendo il suo cervello in cerca di ispirazione, cirocondato dalle stesse storie sotto forma di ”nuvola mistica”.
– Quale canzone di ”Tales” preferisci e quale no?
Tutte le canzoni sono come dei figli quindi è difficile sceglierne giusto una, ma se mi metti tra il martello e l’incudine ti direi… “Of A Raven Born”, dato che lo scrittore è direttamente rappresentato in questa canzone.
– Quale canzone è stata la più difficile da comporre /scrivere e quale la più facile?
Noi eravamo veramente in una buona atmosfera quando abbiamo composto le canzoni per ”Tales” quindi le idee sono uscite fuori velocemente, ciò nonostante abbiamo lavorato duramente in ognuna di queste e ci è voluto un anno a partire dall’inizio perchè le canzoni fossero finalmente registrate in studio.
– Puoi raccontarci qualcosa su come funziona il processo creativo per voi?
Abbiamo cambiato un po’ l’approccio in “Tales” e ci siamo focalizzati più sulle linee vocali. Questo in qualche modo ha arricchito i risultati, quindi Berenice poteva lavorare su alcune linee splendide. Dopo tutti questi anni, ci sentiamo a nostro agio e ora siamo abbastanza soliti a lavorare insieme, quindi tutti i pezzi si incastrano facilmente e la melodia e i riff sono pronti.
– Quali sono le tue influenze e basi musicali?
Penso che abbiamo diversi gusti, qualcosa che trovo veramente interessante per il fatto che mescoliamo le nostre influenze per ottenere una qualcosa di elaborato. Ma alla fine abbiamo in comune l’heavy rock e l’heavy metal degli anni 80, ascoltiamo tutti AC/DC, Kiss, Dio, Ozzy, Iron Maiden.. questi sono delle parti grosse delle nostre basi.
– Avete pianificato dei tour? C’è qualche posto in cui vi piacerebbe suonare?
Si, stiamo lavorando su questo, vorremo andare in tour con Tales durante quest’anno. C’è qualche data in attesa di conferma e speriamo che altre conferme ci arrivino successivamente, ma non possiamo ancora annunciarle, quindi stay tuned! potete essere aggiornati su www.facebook.com/tearsofmartyr .
– So che avete aperto agli Epica, Draconian, Dark Moor. Com’è stata questa esperienza?
Grandi esperienze, assolutamente. E’ stato bello condividere questi momenti con band così fantastiche, dato che puoi sempre imparare cose positive da questi.
– Sei mai stato in Italia? Se sì, dove e cosa ti piace del nostro paese? Se no, dove ti piacerebbe andare e perchè?
Si, ci sono stato. in effetti abbiamo registrato ”Tales” in italia, abbiamo trascorso un buon periodo lì e abbiamo un sacco di ricordi. Io amo la pizza, quindi non mi stufo mai di provare diversi nuovi posti e tutti i tipi. (ndr: di pizza)
– Con chi vorresti collaborare in futuro per una canzone o un nuovo progetto?
Mmm… non ho mai pensato molto alla cosa, ora che mi soffermo a pensarci, forse è troppo tardi…!
– Immagina di dover scappare su un’isola deserta. Puoi portare con te solo 5 cose. Quali sarebbero?
Mmm… penna e foglio, una chitarra e un camion pieno di birra.
– E’ tutto per ora, grazie per la tua disponibilità. C’è quaclosa che vorresti dire ai tuoi fan e/o ai lettori di Heavyworlds.com?

Hi! we are doing pretty well, thanks for giving us the chance to speak with you and share it with all Heavyworlds.com readers out there!
– What about your story? How did you meet and in which way did you decide to get together as a band?
Well, our story began quite a few years ago now… I am the founder member of the band, and at that time (speaking about mid 90’s here) I gathered with some friends and formed a Metal band to play the songs we watched on video. We just wanted to have fun and make some noise! suddenly, I realized it was too late to get out of Metal!
Epica are a great band and really nice people, we opened for them at Madrid in 2010. But to be honest, we don’t look too much into what others do… Tears of Martyr already combined growls & lyrical voices when we started, back in 1995.
– What’s the concept behind “Tales”? And what’s the meaning of the covert art?
“Tales” could look as a conceptual album on first sight, but I think of it more as a book with different stories. The songs are not directly connected and each character has his own drama. I always say they are like neighbors of the same Tears of Martyr Universe.
Regarding the cover art, this occasion made Adrian by the way, it represents the writer sitting in front of his book of tales, racking his brains in search of inspiration, surrounded by the stories in the form of a misty cloud.
All of them are like our sons so it’s difficult to chose just one, but if you put me between the hammer and the anvil I will say… “Of a Raven Born” as the writer is directly represented in this song.
We were in a really good vibe when we composed the songs for “Tales” so all the ideas came pretty quick, nevertheless we worked very hard in the songs and it took almost a year from the start until they songs were finally recorded in the studio.
We have changed a little bit the approach in “Tales” and we have focused even more on the vocal melodies. This somehow enriches the results so Berenice could work on some stunning lines. After all these years we feel comfortable and now are quite used to work together, so all the pieces finally puzzle out easily and the melody and riffs are intertwined.
I think we all have different likes, something I found really interesting in terms of getting them mixed into a more elaborated formula. But in the end we all have in common the Heavy Rock & the Heavy Metal from the 80’s, we all listened to AC/DC, Kiss, Dio, Ozzy, Iron Maiden…these are a big part of our foundations.
Yep we are working on that, we would like to tour with “Tales” during this year. There are a couple of tours pending confirmation and we hope others to come, but we can’t announce them yet, stay tuned! you could easy be up to date on www.facebook.com/tearsofmartyr
Great experiences, absolutely. It’s a good time to share those moments with such great bands, as you could always learn positive things from them.
Yes! actually we recorded “Tales” in Italy, we spent a great time there and have a lot of memories from it. I love pizza, so I never get tired of trying different places and all kinds!
Mmm, never have thought too much about this, and now that I stop and think about it, maybe I am too late…!
