– Parliamo del nuovo album “Heroes”. L’ho ascoltato, è un buon album a mio parere.

– La prima cosa che ho notato è il cambiamento di sound. Questo fatto è collegato al cambio di line up per caso?
Un pochettino la ragione è il cambio di line up, ma la ragione principale è il nuovo produttore Peter Tägtgren. Il produttore di solito decide ed è per questo che l’abbiamo ingaggiato. Ha fatto “Carolus Rex”, che è stato uno dei migliori album dei Sabaton e dopotutto questa è stata la prima volta in cui abbiamo lavorato insieme. Lo sapevamo da sempre, abbiamo imparato durante il percorso, ha acquisito nuovi trucchi e ha imparato come lavorare con i Sabaton, quindi poteva usare tutti questi elementi sul nuovo album, e ha cambiato il sound un pochino per renderlo più fresco, e con i membri nuovi, suona sicuramente un po’ diverso.
– Ho fatto caso che nel 2012 avevate un tastierista nella line up. In questa line up non ne avete uno. Ci sono motivi per questo?
Abbiamo ancora un tastierista nella band, è Joakim, che è sempre stato il tastierista originale e ha sempre lavorato sulla parte delle tastiere, quindi è come se avessimo un tastierista nel gruppo, senza averlo live. Questo è positivo, anche perchè abbiamo un sacco di canzoni che non possiamo suonare con un solo tastierista, a causa di più suoni e altra roba. Ora possiamo avere un suono migliore perchè abbiamo le parti di tastiera pre-registrate. Possiamo suonare tutte le canzoni per intero e, per la prima volta nella nostra storia, quando stavamo registrando l’album, non eravamo limitati. Nel passato, eravamo sempre bloccati, del tipo “ok, non possiamo suonare questo live” ma ora abbiamo detto “dimentichiamo tutti i limiti, facciamo un buon album”.
– Questo album tratta degli eroi delle guerre famose passate. Come mai trattate del tema della guerra nelle vostre canzoni?
In origine, perchè volevamo raccontare della guerra? Perchè ci doveva essere un testo o qualcosa, dovevamo cantare qualcosa, non siamo una band strumentale. Quindi dobbiamo cantare qualcosa e per farlo dobbiamo scrivere una sorta di testo ed è così che abbiamo deciso di trattare di questo, perchè è più interessante della solita roba, non so, come “sesso, droga e rock n roll”.
Non è ciò che siamo, non siamo interessati a quello. Io e Joakim volevamo scrivere su qualcosa che fosse reale, che sta succedendo o che fosse già successo, preso dal mondo reale, che è molto più interessante di quello immaginario, più emotivo..Quindi abbiamo deciso di farlo. Nel 2010 abbiamo realizzato l’album “Coat Of Arms” e abbiamo chiesto ai nostri fan di mandarci un’idea per questo disco; così abbiamo ricevuto un sacco di idee. E abbiamo scritto “Coat Of Arms” basandoci su questi argomenti; fra queste idee ne abbiamo ricevuta una di cui non potevamo scrivere, quindi l’abbiamo tenuta da parte: era una storia su Witold Pilecki, la trovate nella traccia “Inmate 4859” nel nuovo album, avevamo detto “un giorno dobbiamo scrivere proprio di questo”. Per “Coat Of Arms”, abbiamo scritto sulle grandi battaglie, dicendo “un giorno dobbiamo parlare di queste persone, non basarci solo sulle grandi battaglie ma anche sugli individui”. Quindi abbiamo deciso che ci dovevamo concentrare su questo e che dovevamo chiamare l’album “Heroes”. Quattro anni fa abbiamo deciso che dovevamo realizzare questo album e abbiamo tenuto da parte l’idea per questo. Viviamo nel futuro a volte.
– Parlando della copertina, qual’è il suo significato? E cosa puoi dirmi riguardo all’aquila? Rappresenta qualcosa?
Beh, veramente no. E’ una fantastica copertina, volevamo condividere un sentimento che la gente potesse provare nel vederla o prendendola. Volevamo ottenere un’emozione, un qualcosa che fosse collegato alla musica, ma non abbiamo mai disegnato le copertine. Parlavamo al disegnatore della copertina e gli abbiamo spiegato il concetto dell’album, e questo è ciò che ci ha portato. Ero molto soddisfatto di questa copertina. Quando l’abbiamo vista, la nostra reazione è stata proprio “damn”, di solito dovevamo cambiarla un po’, ma questa volta era “perfetta”.
– E’ stato difficile scrivere di questo nuovo album “Heroes” dopo il grande successo di quello precedente?
La cosa più difficile di questo album è stata la pressione a cui eravamo sottoposti, perchè “Carolus Rex” è stato un album significativo per la carriera dei Sabaton, è stato un disco che ci ha cambiato un sacco. Da allora, abbiamo anche avuto alcuni nuovi membri e con loro abbiamo scritto quest’album, quindi, se fosse un album da band, ora la gente direbbe che era migliore prima che cambiassimo tutta la line up o qualcos’altro. E’ stata veramente una grande pressione! Ma intendo dire, siamo sicuri ora di essere riusciti nell’intento, siamo riusciti a creare un buon album.
– Quale canzone è stata la più facile da scrivere e quale la più difficile?
Non lo so (ride ndr). E’ Joakim che di solito scrive le canzoni, ma nel nuovo album è stato aiutato anche da alcuni membri dei Sabaton, cosa che non è mai successa prima. Questa è stata una cosa nuova e divertente e ha dato un sacco di energia al disco.
– Qual’è la canzone di cui sei più orgoglioso e perchè?
(ride ndr) Questa è una domanda molto interessante. Normalmente quando scriviamo un album, possiamo sempre dire che tutti hanno la loro canzone preferita, ma su questo nuovo album si può dire che tutti lo amano interamente. Non ne ho una preferita, è folle. Quando ci è stato chiesto quale canzone dovesse essere usata come singolo, la risposta è stata “qualunque”. Questa è la prima volta in cui abbiamo fatto un album di cui a ogni membro piace ogni canzone. Quindi quando ci siamo seduti per pensare a cosa avremo poi dovuto fare per le prove e con che cosa dovessimo iniziare, abbiamo detto “tutto”. Quindi abbiamo provato tutte le canzoni e poi abbiamo visto quali tra queste i fans vorrebbero sentire.
– Ascoltando il nuovo album, ho notato che “Smoking Snakes” ricorda molto il vecchio sound dei Sabaton. C’è un motivo per questo?
“Smoking Snakes” è stata una delle tracce b-side dell’album; prima che fosse chiamata così e prima che ci fosse un testo, era chiamata “Heroes”, perchè è ciò che abbiamo provato quando abbiamo scritto questa canzone. Sapevamo che era una tipica canzone alla Sabaton. I fan, quando ascolteranno questa canzone, la sentiranno dentro emotivamente e riconosceranno che questi sono i Sabaton. Ed è per questo che l’abbiamo chiamata “Heroes” inizialmente, ma poi abbiamo cambiato il titolo in “Smoking Snakes”, intendo dire, questa canzone è sul Brasile e gli eroi della seconda guerra mondiale, poche persone sanno che stavano veramente combattendo, ed è questo il motivo per cui abbiamo voluto scrivere di questo.
– E ho anche notato che “The Ballad Of Bull” è una canzone veramente diversa dalle solite dei Sabaton. Perchè?
Eravamo seduti in aereoporto in America e avevamo appena finito il tour. Joakim ha detto “ho scritto qualcosa, vuoi sentirlo?” c’era solo il piano e lui che faceva “mmmm mmm mmm” e ho pensato subito che fosse fantastico, ma non sapevamo che cosa potessimo fare con quello. Dovrebbe essere con il piano? Dovrebbe essere con chitarre e batteria? Orchestra? Non avevamo idee. Conoscevamo solo la melodia e il piano, poi abbiamo chiesto a un amico, che è stato nostro tastierista per tre notti dieci anni fa, e un grande fan. Gli abbiamo presentato la canzone “Cosa ne pensi di questo brano?” “Sto pensando ad un’orchestra, lasciate che vi faccia vedere”. Ha modificato la canzone, ha scritto un sacco di parti orchestrali e l’ha resa come la si sente oggi.
– L’ultima volta che i Sabaton sono stati in Italia è stato nel 2012. C’è qualche opportunità che voi torniate presto nel nostro paese?
Si sicuro, è stato un gran successo quello show, molte persone l’hanno apprezzato ed è stato il più piccolo pubblico che abbiamo mai avuto, ci sentiamo di dover ritornare. Mi sarebbe piaciuto tornare ora, ma quest’anno non ci sono festival in Italia. E’ triste. Se siamo fortunati, intendo dire se le cose vanno per il meglio, ci sono delle band con cui possiamo suonare, gli Iron Maiden ad esempio, sarebbe fantastico. Forse potremo suonare con gli Iron Maiden, sarebbe fantastico, se fossimo fortunati. Sarebbe bello, sono in assoluto la mia band preferita.
– Cosa mi dici sui tour e le setlist per i concerti? Sarà molto dura scegliere canzoni per questo tour.
I tour sono tutti prenotati ma non ancora resi ufficiali. Questo sarà molto difficile, intendo dire le setlist per il futuro, perchè abbiamo un nuovo album e vogliamo suonare molto di quello. Di solito se suoniamo 15 canzoni, 4-5 sono prese dall’album nuovo, ma questa volta saranno più di quattro le canzoni dal nuovo album. Intendo dire, è un album fantastico e anche perchè è stato scritto insieme e registrato da nuovi membri della band, quindi lo sentono diverso nei loro confronti, amano le canzoni perchè erano lì per queste canzoni.
– Cosa ti piace e non ti piace dell’Italia?
Ieri è stato uno dei giorni più fantastici di tutto l’anno, ero a gironzolare qui. La miglior cosa sono i fan italiani, suonare per loro, sanno veramente fare casino.
Quando eravamo in tour la scorsa volta e siamo venuti in Italia, avevamo dei membri nuovi e abbiamo detto loro “ok, dovete essere preparati per stasera” e loro “COSA?” e noi abbiamo detto “perchè oggi è l’italia” e loro “ieri c’era molta più gente” e noi “non importa” (ride ndr) “lo vedrete oggi, sentirete l’Italia” ahaha. Penso che sia nella natura dell’italiano essere casinista, urlare, essere energico quando si va ai concerti, noi possiamo vederlo (ride ndr) e possiamo sentirlo. In Svezia, abbiamo un buon pubblico ma le persone svedesi sono molto tranquille ma qui in Italia la gente è pazza. (ride ndr)
– Ci puoi raccontare l’episodio più divertente e strano successo in tour con i Sabaton?
(ride ndr) Ce ne sono molti. Una delle cose più folli successe è stato quando eravamo in tour in Russia, avevamo un nostro aereo, una nostra crew. Una sera ero seduto in hotel, c’era questo ragazzo accanto a me, molto ubriaco e ha iniziato a parlare con me e abbiamo parlato, bevuto e ci siamo divertiti. Mi ha spiegato dopo un po’ che è gay e che voleva fare sesso con me. E io ho detto “no, non voglio farlo, ma ok, grazie” (ride ndr). Il suo capo era lì e ha sentito questo e devi sapere che in Russia non va bene essere gay e questo ragazzo pare fosse il pilota del nostro aereo, è stato licenziato subito e hanno assunto un nuovo pilota. E ogni notte quando partivamo con questo aereo, mi chiamavano sempre “Hey, il bassista dei sabaton può venire nella cabina del pilota, il pilota lo sta chiamando”. Ci sono tante storie ma questa è la più strana perchè è stato licenziato per essere gay, non perchè fosse ubriaco, seduto a bere e così marcio e il giorno dopo dovesse guidare un aereo.
– Se potessi lavorare con qualsiasi artista, morto o vivo, chi sarebbero e perchè?
Abbiamo pensato molto a questo, intendo dire , l’abbiamo già fatto prima ma cose come queste possono essere veramente divertenti. Penso non ci siano delle persone morte con cui vorremmo lavorare, ma sarebbe bello poter lavorare ad alcune canzoni con i Nightwish, intendo Tuomas, e vedere cosa succede perchè abbiamo molto in comune con lui, soprattutto la mentalità, siamo buoni amici, a lui piacciono i Sabaton e a noi piacciono i Nightwish quindi.. (ride ndr)
– Immagina che la tua casa sia in fiamme (persone e animali si salvano). Devi salvare cinque album musicali considerando tu li abbia tutti. Quali sceglieresti e perchè?
Questo è molto difficile. Non lo so, gli album che per me significano molto sono:
The Number Of The Beast degli Iron Maiden, è uno degli album che mi ha cambiato tanto, un disco di una band svedese, siamo migliori amici li sceglierei.
Ci sono tante band che significano tanto per me. Quando ascolto la musica, di solito la collego a qualcosa, lo facciamo tutti. Oggi, dato che sono in tour e conosco tanti musicisti e band, mi dà un diverso modo di vedere le cose. Di solito è triste perchè alcuni degli idoli che abbia mai avuto non sono brave persone in realtà.
E questo è triste. Se sono un grande fan di una band e ci faccio un tour insieme e non sono bravi, non posso più ascoltare la loro musica per via del legame che c’è. Son sempre stato un fan dei Grave Digger e poi abbiamo fatto un tour insieme e dopo quello, sono diventato un fan più grande. La stessa cosa con Udo Dirkschneider degli Accept, mi piace davvero, sono un grande fan di Udo, poi siamo diventati amici e ora sono un fan più grande. (ride ndr)
Quindi sceglierò un album di Udo, uno dei Grave Digger, quello dei Iron Maiden, uno della band svedese e uno dei Sabaton.
– E’ tutto per ora. Grazie del tuo tempo. C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai fan italiani, ai tuoi fan o ai lettori di Heavyworlds.com?
Grazie per il supporto, siamo veramente felici che ci sia un interesse per noi, siamo veramente felici. Per l’ultimo album abbiamo avuto tre interviste in Italia, ma ora ne abbiamo molte di più. Questo significa che stiamo ottenendo apprezzamenti, la gente inizia a realizzare che i sabaton sono in giro e siamo veramente felici di questo.

– Hello Pär, welcome for the first time on Heavyworlds.com, we are very glad to have you here, how are you?
Hey, I’m perfectly fine and I’m very happy to be here in Italy, I mean when we did the last album “Carolus Rex”, we didn’t have almost any interviews here in Italy. Now we could be here for a whole day to do interviews and I’m very happy (laughs)
– Let’s talk about your new album “Heroes”. I’ve listened to it, it’s a good album in my opinion.

– The first thing I noticed is that the sound has changed. Is this fact linked maybe to the line up change?
A little bit the reason is the line up change, but it’s the new producer Peter Tägtgren. He decides and that’s why we hired him. He did “Carolus Rex”, which was the best album of Sabaton and then afterwards this was the first time we worked together. We always knew it, we learned during the way, he learned new tricks and he learned how to work with Sabaton, so he could use that on the new album and he changed the sound a little bit to make it sound more fresh, and with the new members it sounds certainly a bit different.
– I’ve noticed you had a keyboard player in 2012 in your line up. In this new one there isn’t one. Any reasons for this?
We still have a keyboard player in the band, it’s Joakim who was the original keyboard player and he always worked on the keyboards so it’s like we have a keyboard player in the band, but we don’t have one live. And that is also good because we have a lot of songs which we can not play with one keyboard player because we have more sounds and stuff. Now we can sound better because we have pre recorded keyboards. And now we can play the full songs and for the first time in our history when we were recording the album, we were not limited. In the past we were always limited like “ok, we cannot play this live” but now we say “forget about all the limits, let’s do a great album”.
– This album deals with heroes of the past famous wars. Why do you choose the theme of the war in your songs?
Originally, why did we want to sing the war? Because there has to be any lyrics or something, we have to sing something, we are not an instrumental band. So we have to sing something and we have to write some kind of lyrics and it’s why we write about this because it’s more interesting than regular stuff, I don’t know, like “sex, drugs and rock n roll”.
It’s not us, we are not interested in that. Me and Joakim wanted to write about something that is real, that is happening or has happened, taken from the real world. The real world is much more interesting than the fictional world, more emotional… So we decided we wanted to do that. In 2010 we did the “Coat Of Arms” album and we asked our fans to send us an idea for the album, we got lots of ideas. And we wrote “Coat Of Arms” album based on these ideas, we had a very good idea we could not write about for “Coat Of Arms” so we saved it: it was a story about Witold Pilecki , it’s in “Inmate 4859” in the new album, we said “one day we have to write exactly about this”. In the “Coat Of Arms” we wrote about big battles, we said “one day we have to talk about these people, not to focus on big battles but on the individuals”. So we decided we should focus on this and then we should call the album “Heroes”. four years ago we decided we should do this album and we saved the idea for this. We live in the future a lot of times.
– Talking about the cover artwork, what is its meaning? And what could you tell me about the eagle? Does it represent something?
Well, not really. It’s a great cover artwork, we wanted to share a feeling when people see it or hold it, we wanted to get a feeling, something, that is connected to the music, but we had never designed the artwork. We were talking to the artwork’s designer and we explained him the idea of the album and this is what he came back to us. I was very satisfied of this cover artwork. When we saw it, it was like “damn”, normally we have to change a little bit but this time was “perfect”.
– Was it hard to write this new album “Heroes” after the great success of the previous one?
The most difficult thing for this album was the pressure because “Carolus Rex” was a defining album in Sabaton career, it was an album that changed us a lot. Since then we also had some new members and we did this album, so if it was a band album now, people would say that it was better before we changed all the line up or something else. This was big pressure! But I mean, we are sure now we have succeded, we managed to create a great album.
– Which song was the easiest to write and which one the most difficult?
I don’t know (laughs). Joakim usually writes the songs but in the new album he was helped also by some members of Sabaton which has never happened before. This was new and exciting and it gave new energy to the album.
– Which is the song you are very proud of and why?
(laughs) That’s a very interesting thing. Normally when we write an album, we could always say everybody has their own favourite song but about this new album everybody loves it all. I don’t have a favourite, this is so crazy. When we were asked which song should be used as a single, the answer was “anyone”. This is the first time we have ever done an album in which every member likes every song. So when we were sitting down to think about what should we do for the rehearsal and what we should start with, we said everything. So we rehearsed all the songs and then we saw which ones the fans wanted to hear.
– Listening to the new album, I’ve noticed that “Smoking Snakes” sounds like the old Sabaton sound. Is there any reason for this?
“Smoking Snakes” was one of the back song of the album, before it was called “Smoking Snakes”, and before it had any lyrics it was called “Heroes”, because we felt it when we wrote that song. We knew this is a typical classic Sabaton sound song. Fans, when they hear this song, they will feel and recognize this is Sabaton. That’s why we called it “Heroes” from the beginning but we changed the title in “Smoking Snakes”, I mean this song is about Brazil and heroes in World War II, very few people know they were actually fighting, that’s exactly why we wanted to write about it.
– And I have also noticed “The Ballad of Bull” is a very different song from Sabaton ones. Why?
We were sitting in the airport in America and we have just finished the tour. Joakim said “I’ve written something do you want to hear?”. There was only the piano and him doing “mmmm mmm mmm” and I thought instantly it was great but we didn’t know what we could do with that. Should it be with piano? Should it be with guitars and drums? Orchestra? We had no idea so we just knew the melody and piano then we asked a friend, who was our keyboard player for three nights ten years ago, he’s a great fan. We present the song to him “What do you think about this song?” “I’m thinking orchestra, let me show you” so he evolved that song, he wrote a lot of the orchestra stuff and made the song the way it sounds today.
– Last time Sabaton came to Italy was in 2012. Is there any chance you will come back soon?
Yes of course, it was a great success that show, a lot of people loved it and it was the smallest people we have ever had, we feel like we have to come back. I wanted to come back now but this year there is no festival in Italy. That’s sad. If we are lucky, I mean, everything goes in that way, there are some bands to play with, Iron Maiden for example, that would be great. Maybe we can play with Iron Maiden in Italy, that would be great, if we are lucky. That would be nice, they are absolutely my favourite band.
– What about your tours and setlist for the concerts? It will be very hard for you to choose songs for this tour.
Tours are all booked but they are not official yet. This is going to be very difficult, I mean about the setlist for the future, because we have a new album and we want to play a lot from it, normally if we play 15 songs in one night, 4 of them is from the new album but it will be more than 4 songs from the new album this time. I mean it’s a great album and it’s also because it’s written together and recorded by new band members so they feel different towards it , they love the songs because they have been there for these songs.
– What do you like and don’t you like about Italy?
Yesterday was one of the greatest days of the whole year, I was there hanging out. The best thing is italian fans, playing concerts for them, they are very loud. When we were touring during the last tour and we came to Italy, we had some of the new band members and we said “ok, you have to be prepared for tonight” and they said “WHAT?” and we said “because today is Italy” and they said “yesterday there was more people ” and we said “it doesn’t matter”. (laughs). “You’ll see today you will feel Italy” ahaha. I think it’s in italian’s nature to be loud, scream, to be energetic when you go to concerts, we can see that (laughs) and we can feel it. In Sweden we have a great crowd but swedish people are generally very quite but here in Italy people go crazy. (laughs)
– Could you tell me the funniest and strangest episode happened during the tour with Sabaton?
(laughs) There are a lot of them. One of the craziest thing happened was while we were touring in Russia, we had our own plane, our own crew. One night I was sitting in the hotel, there was this guy sitting next me, he was very drunk and he drinks a lot and he starts talking to me and we were talking and drinking and we were having fun. He explained to me after a while that he is gay and he wants to have sex with me. And I said “ok, i don’t want to, but ok, thank you” (laughs). His boss was there and he heard this and you know in Russia is not ok to be gay so this guy was apparently the pilot of our plane, he got fired instantly and they hired a new pilot. And every night when we took off with this plane, they always call to me “hey could the bass player of Sabaton please come to the front, the pilot is calling”. There are a lot of stories but this is the weirdest because he got fired for being gay, not because he was drunk and he was sitting and drinking and he was so wasted and the morning after he was supposed to fly a plane. He was not fired because he was drunk and so wasted but because he is gay.
– If you could work with any artists, dead or still alive ones, who will they be and why?
We thought about it, I mean we have done it before but things like that could be very fun. I think there aren’t any dead ones we would like to work with but it will be very exciting to do some songs together with Nightwish, I mean with Tuomas, and see what happens because we have a lot in common especially the mentality with Tuomas, we are very good friends and he likes Sabaton and we like Nightwish so.. (laughs)
– Imagine your house is on fire (people and animals will get safe). You have to save five albums considering you have all of them. Which one would you choose and why?
This is so much difficult! (laughs) I don’t know.. what it means a lot for me is:
The Number of The Beast by Iron Maiden, it’s one of those albums that changed a lot for me. Then, a swedish band that are best friends of mine I will choose them.
There are other bands that means a lot. When I listen to music, I usually connect it with something, everybody do it. Today because I’ve been touring and I know a lot of musicians and bands, it gives a different approach. Sometimes it’s sad because some of my great heroes I have ever had are not so nice in reality. And that’s sad. If I am a big fan of the band and we tour together and they are not so nice, I could not listen to their music anymore because of its connection. I was always a Grave Digger fan and then we tour together and after that I’m a great bigger fan. The same thing with Udo Dirkschneider from Accept, I really like taht, I was a big fan of Udo, then we get friend and I am a bigger fan now (laughs)
So I will choose a Udo album, Grave Digger album, Iron maiden, the swedish band album and a Sabaton album.

Thank you for the support, we are very happy there is an interest for us, we are very happy that for the last album we had three interviews from Italy, but now we have a lot more. That means that we are getting appreciation, people starts to realize that sabaton is around and I’m very happy for that.
