Di solito nelle webzine funziona che una etichetta discografica o un’agency ti manda una richiesta recensione e/o intervista e si decide di farla o meno.. Mesi fa è successo che il cantante dei My Propane mi contattasse privatamente su Facebook per propormi di recensire il loro disco..e che gran bel disco! Una band con radici in Olanda che meriterebbe di essere conosciuta anche in Italia. Non mi potevo lasciar perdere una chiacchierata con il frontman Valerio Recenti. Ecco a voi cosa ne è uscito, buona lettura!
Ciao Valerio, benvenuto su Heavyworlds.com, è un piacere averti qui. Come vanno le cose?
Molto bene grazie e grazie dell’opportunità di potervi parlare.
– Parliamo del vostro ultimo lavoro “Modern Violent Gentleman”. C’è qualche concetto dietro quest’album? Di cosa tratta il disco?
Non c’è un concept preciso dietro al disco, se inteso in termini di concept tradizionale. Ha comunque un solido filo rosso che collega tutte le tracce, uno spirito sottostante di ironia, melodia e energia e volontà di fare un po’ di seria, potente musica. Questo è il nostro ”ciao, piacere di conoscerti” alla scena rock e metal – il nostro onesto tentativo di mischiare le nostre diverse influenze musicali e creare qualcosa che ci rappresenti.
– E cosa mi puoi dire sul significato della copertina e del nome del disco?
La copertina è in verità il logo dei My Propane – una violenta immagine di un ragazzo il cui braccio è in fiamme ma che lascia trasparire una atmosfera distratta, calma e composta. Ci piace giocare con gli opposti, un po’ come il titolo “Modern Violent Gentleman”, che è un modo carino di descrivere le personalità nella band e la band se stessa.
– Dato che siete un po’ sconosciuti in Italia, ci puoi riassumere la storia dei “My Propane”? Come si è formata la band?
Il posto che abbiamo visitato, più vicino all’Italia, è Melkweg ad Amsterdam quando abbiamo avuto il piacere di suonare con i Liftiba nel loro ultimo tour europeo. E’ stato molto divertente. Ma no, dobbiamo ancora conquistare il pubblico lì e stiamo certamente lavorando per farlo.
Mi piacerebbe darti una sorta di storia surreale sui My Propane, una storia di vite prese, vite salvate, droga e confusione – ma in verità ci siamo conosciuti per caso, lungo la strada. Giusto 4 ragazzi con una passione e con uno stile persone, esattamente come la musica dovrebbe essere.
– Qual è stata la canzone più facile da scrivere e quale la più difficile?
Non ne ho idea. Tutto viene molto da se – a volte prende 5 minuti, a volte 5 giorni o settimane. Ma quello non porta a una difficoltà in sè, più una caduta di ispirazione quasi impercettibile.
– Come funziona il processo creativo dei My Propane?
Personalmente, le migliori idee arrivano mentre faccio la spesa al supermercato. Dovrei parlarne con qualche dottore probabilmente.
– Siete state la band di apertura dei ReVamp e dei Stream Of Passion. Com’è stata questa esperienza? Avete stretto amicizia voi e queste due band?
Molto divertente. Entrambe le band sono uniche e composte da persone veramente di talento notevole. Sono sempre un piacere da ascoltare ogni volta che vanno sul palco e molto divertimento dopo e prima dei concerti. Abbiamo suonato con i ReVamp un bel po’, prima e dopo il rilascio del disco. Siamo andati in tour per i Paesi bassi e il tour tedesco – Sono una band fantastica e festosa. Floor è di certo incredibile.
Ho grandi ricordi del nostro chitarrista Anand Mahangoe in missione per volerli far ubriacare durante un concerto in germania, passandoli shottini di qualche liquore ungherese dal lato del palco.
Abbiamo aperto gli Stream Of Passion per un bel po’ di volte quest’anno ed è stato assolutamente fantastico. Sono altre incredibili e talentuose persone e il nuovo album “A War of Our Own” è una bomba. E’ fantastico avere l’opportunità di condividere il palco con palco e vedere Marcela fare le sue magie con il pubblico. E anche il divertimento che abbiamo insieme sul palco. Il problema è che a volte mi ritrovo a trarre idee da sessioni jam e poi scopro, dopo 4 ore di buon duro lavoro, che sto riproducendo dei riff delle loro canzoni.
– Avete piani per il futuro? Qualche idea per un tour europeo?
Stiamo lavorando al nuovo album, che ci sta già assorbendo tutte le energie.
– Siete mai stati in Italia? Se sì, quale posto vi è piaciuto di più? Se no, quale vorresti visitare e perchè?
Beh essendo italiano, orgoglioso toscano e con un logo del Gallo Nero Chianti Classico tatuato sul mio corpo, sono probabilmente troppo di parte per rispondere correttamente. Ci piacerebbe venire e suonare lì, se tutto va bene lo faremo accadere molto presto.
– Immagina che la tua casa sia in fiamme (persone e animali si salvano). Dovete salvare 5 dischi dalla vostra enorme collezione di CD (Considerando li abbiate tutti). Quali scegliereste e perchè?

– Hey guys, welcome on Heavyworlds.com, it’s a pleasure to have you here. How are you doing?
Very well thank you & thanks for the opportunity to talk to you guys.
– Let’s talk about your latest album “Modern Violent Gentleman”. Is there any concept behind? What’s the album about?
There’s no precise concept behind this record, in terms of traditional concept-album type of thing. It does however have a solid red-line connecting all the tracks, an underlying spirit of irony, melody & energy and will to make some serious banging music. This is our “hello, nice to meet you” to the rock and metal scene – our honest effort to mix our diverse musical influences and create something that sounds like us.
– And what could you tell me about the meaning of the cover artwork and the album name?
The artwork is actually the My Propane logo itself – a violent image of a guy who’s arm is on fire, but oozes a careless, calm and collected vibe. We like to play with opposites, a little like the title “Modern Violent Gentleman”, which is a nice way to describe the personalities in this band, and the band itself.
– As you are quite unknown in Italy, would you like to sum up “My Propane” history? How did the band get together?
The closest we got to italy was actually in Melkweg Amsterdam, when we had the pleasure to play with Litfiba in their last European Tour. That was a lot of fun. But no, we are still to conquer the crowd over there & we’re certainly working towards that.
I’d love to give you some sort of surreal story behind My Propane, a tale of lives taken, lives saved, drugs & mayhem – but in reality we have met through chance, along the way. Just 4 guys with a passion & with a personal take on what music should be about.
– Which was the easiest song to write and which one is the most difficult?
I have no idea. Everything comes out the way it’s supposed to – sometimes it takes five minutes, sometimes five days or weeks. But that would not constitute a difficulty per-se, more a slow-paced inspiration flow.
– How does “My Propane” creative process work?
Personally, the best ideas come while shopping at the supermarket. I should speak with some doctors about it, probably.
– You have been opening act to ReVamp and Stream Of Passion. How was this experience? Did you become friends with those two bands?
A lot of fun. Both bands are unique & composed of very talented and remarkable individuals. That makes for a listening pleasure every time they go on stage and a lot of fun after and before the shows.
We played with Revamp quite a lot, before and after the release of our album. We have toured with them trough their whole NL & german tour – they are a fantastic band and party people. Floor is of course incredible.
I have great memories of our guitar player Anand Mahangoe on a mission to get them drunk during a german concert, passing them shots of strange hungarian liqueurs from stage side.
We have supported Stream of Passion on a number of occasions this year, and it’s been absolutely great. They are another incredible bunch of talented people & their new album “A war of our own” is a bomb. It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to share stage with them and watch Marcela work her magic with the crowd. And the fun we have together off stage of course.
The problem is that I find myself jamming on some ideas i get only to find out, after a good 4 hours of solid work, that I am ripping off some riff from their songs.
– What are your plans for the future? Any idea for an european tour?
We are working on a new album, which already got all my juices flowing.
– Have you ever been to Italy? If yes, which place do you like the most? If not, which one would you like visit and why?
Well being italian, proud Tuscan and with a Gallo Nero Chianti Classico logo tattooed on my body I am probably too biased to respond properly.
We’d love to come and play over there – hopefully we’ll make it happen very soon.
– Imagine your home is on fire. (people and animals will get safe). You have to save 5 albums from your huge CD collection (considering you have all of them). Which one will you choose and why?
This is question is virtually impossible to answer. I’ll tell you what I’d bring in my car
