Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto occasione di parlare con Adrienne Cowan (Seven Spires) e Marco Pastorino (Temperance) riguardo il loro nuovo progetto “Light & Shade” che è stato annunciato da poco e di cui si sa veramente poco. Ecco a voi in esclusiva un’intervista con le due voci di questo progetto. Enjoy!
– Ciao Adrienne & Marco, benvenuti su Heavyworlds.com! Adrienne, è un piacere averti qui in Italia, come vanno le cose qui?
Adrienne: Ciao Pinka, sto benissimo, adoro un sacco l’Italia. Non avrei problemi a trasferirmi qui credo, da una parte sto diventando brava a parlare in italiano (ride ndr)
– Parliamo del nuovo progetto “Light & Shade”. Come sei stata coinvolta in questa nuova band?
Adrienne: Marco, il chitarrista e ideatore, mi mandò un messaggio perchè avevo fatto mettere una delle canzoni di una delle mie band in una compilation di progpower, abbiamo iniziato a parlare e penso che gli sia piaciuta molto la mia voce, così poi mi ha mandato dei demo, ci ho cantato sopra e glieli ho mandati indietro. Quindi sono la cantante e compositrice di testi, per cui sì, è quello che faccio ora.
– Quindi Marco, sei la mente dietro a questa idea, cosa ti ha fatto decidere di avere un altro progetto band, quali erano e sono i tuoi obiettivi con questa band e come hai scelto questa line up? Adrienne ci ha appena raccontato come è stata scelta ma cosa nella sua voce ti ha colpito così tanto da pensare di volerla nel gruppo? E cosa mi dici invece di Luca (Temperance) e Alex Landenburg (LT’s Rhapsody, 21 Octayne)?
Marco: Credo che dietro ad ogni nuova band , non mi piace mai definire un gruppo un side project o altro , ci siamo la voglia e il pensiero di poter scrivere nuova musica e dare magari spazio ad una certa parte di creatività che non abbiamo la possibilità di sfruttare in differenti situazioni. Questo full length è stato una vera e propria valvola di sfogo per la mia passione per l’heavy metal con le voci davvero prepotenti , ma non solo. Ci sono tanti intermezzi atmosferici , quasi acustici , un utilizzo diverso dei cori, in alcuni brani costruiti proprio come se avessimo davanti un coro di 20 persone, ma su tutto spicca assolutamente la voce di Adrienne; quando ho sentito la sua band , Seven Spires, per la prima volta , ho subito pensato che mi pareva pazzesco il fatto che non avessi ancora sentito quei brani con queste parti urlate un po’ alla Doro, o parlando di voci più attuali Noora dei Battle Beast , anche se sarebbe riduttivo parlare solo di scream ecc.
Luca mi accompagna da anni, è una delle persone di cui mi fido di più a livello musicale e sono molto orgoglioso del fatto che in questo album ci sia , finalmente, un brano scritto musicalmente a quattro mani insieme a lui.
Discorso diverso per Alex; credo che le cose accadano sempre per un motivo e subito dopo pochi giorni dal nostro incontro in tour coi Rhapsody , siamo diventati ottimi amici e abbiamo deciso di dar vita a questa collaborazione.
– Questa band si chiama “Light & Shade”, c’è un motivo per cui hai scelto questo nome?
Marco: Il nome era già nella mia mente da tempo , in uno dei primi testi che ho scritto dei Temperance anni fa , quel Light & Shade suonava già , così sardonico e pieno. E credo che, come dovrebbe sempre essere, racchiuda perfettamente l’idea musicali che abbiamo , così oscura per vocalità, cori e orchestrazioni , ma anche con aperture davvero limpide .
– Adrienne, com’è stato lavorare con Marco e Luca in questi giorni di registrazione del disco?
E’ stato veramente figo, abbiamo registrato le voci in soli cinque giorni, è stata follia, e avevo ancora il jetlag di 6 ore addosso ma è stato molto divertente e sono davvero felice di aver lavorato diretamente con marco e Luca. La cosa che abbiamo fatto veramente tutti insieme è stata la ripresa del video “You Are” che sarà il singolo. E’ stato fantastico davvero, adoro questi ragazzi.
– E cosa mi dite del lavorare con Alex?
Marco: Alex ha svolto un lavoro superbo , ha messo molto del suo stile nelle registrazioni e siamo davvero contenti del risultato finale. Credo che , anche se è sicuramente più conosciuto per le sue parti speed-power , il meglio del suo background è rappresentato dal groove e dalla sua impronta progressive , che lo rendono a mio parere un batterista molto molto personale.
– L’album “The Essence Of Everything” uscirà il 18 novembre in USA e 25 novembre in Europa. Qual è il significato del titolo?
Marco: “The Essence Of Everything” non è un concept album , ma in qualche modo vuole raccontare diverse storie; a partire dall’opener fino alla titletrack , collegate da diversi filo condutorri , sia a livello di liriche che musicali. L’album si conclude allo stesso modo in cui inizia , come se la storia prendesse vita , ci portasse in diversi posti , più chiari e oscuri come dicevamo, ma ci riportasse al punto di partenza.
Il titolo racconta un po’ di noi , sia a livello personale, che di band e di quanto la musica possa davvero essere l’essenza alla base della nostra vita.
– Il vostro disco di debutto è stato interamente prodotto dal grandissimo Simone Mularoni (DGM) che ha già lavorato con te Marco per gli album dei temperance ad esempio. Come mai hai scleto di nuovo lui?
Marco: Simone rimane sempre la ciliegina sulla torta, la persona che riesce davvero a tirare fuori i brani allo stesso modo , o forse meglio , da quelle che erano le idee iniziali. Il sound è talmente pieno e potente grazie al suo lavoro , che non potremmo chiedere di avere qualcun altro a seguirci. La sua volontà poi di essere aperto a idee e sempre pronto a sviluppare nuovi tipi , sicuramente è uno dei suoi pregi maggiori.
– Quind “You Are” sarà il nuovo video, puoi dirci qualcosa al riguardo?
Marco: Abbiamo passato qualche giorno tutti insieme in Italia e siamo stati strafelici di poter girare un video insieme; ognuno vive in luoghi diversi , abbiamo tutti diversi impegni, ma speriamo davvero se il feedback per l’album sarà buono di poter vivere insieme molti momenti. “You Are” è stato uno dei primi brani scritti per questo debutto e forse il pezzo che più di tutti c’ha messo in modo chiaro in testa l’idea di sviluppare davvero la band e portarla davanti al mondo. Il video sarà pronto a brevissimo e ne sono molto contento anche per il fatto che abbiamo voluto affidarci ad un bravissimo talento italiano; in questa band come nelle altre nostre , vorremmo sempre dare spazio ad ogni singolo artista , non solo musicale , ma anche a livello di videomaker, fotografia, grafica che ci sia, è proprio quella forse l’essenza del tutto che abbiamo citato ; la forza disarmante della musica di unire mondi artistici diversi per un unico obiettivo comune.
– Adrienne, usi diversi stili vocali in questo album, da parti che possiamo definire normali a parti growl. Com’è stato lavorare con così tanti diversi approcci vocali?
Adrienne: C’è solo un’unica parte che era nuova per me: ci sono delle parti backing vocals che sono estremamente scream a note basse. Pensavo di non essere in grado di produrre questi suoni visto che sono donna ma è stato fantastico. Le altre parti erano stili metal che sono come pane e burro per me, mi piace farlo e mi viene naturale. Avevo con me un mio amico nella stanza che mi spiegava come fare queste parti così super basse dicendo “manda giù la tua lingua” e altre frasi. Era strano ma divertente.
– Questa domanda è difficile lo so ma qual è la vostra canzone preferita del disco e perchè?
Adrienne: Oh, ci devo pensare. Penso “Wonder So Far” è una delle mie preferite perchè mi piace tanto il testo e il contrasto tra i versi e il ritornello, è basata su un sogno ed è veramente fantastica, è super dark ma anche molto serena, è un’oscurità pacifica. Ovviamente, mi piace anche “You Are”. (Ride ndr)
Marco: Domanda sempre difficile , dipende dai momenti , ma più che un singolo momento , io sono davvero molto attaccato a certe parti meno canoniche che abbiamo registrato nell’album; diversi modi di registrare le voci di Adrienne , più teatrali in alcuni punti , come in “Drown In The Absurdity”, o i cori quasi da anthem alla Rainbow di Brokenhearted.
– Quindi quali sono i vostri piani per il futuro? Farete un release party, qualche tour, ci potete anticipare qualcosa?
Marco: Stiamo parlando per diverse possibilità al momento, dipende naturalmente da come verrà percepita la band e da mille sfaccettature, ma siamo solo all’inizio quindi potrà succedere di tutto. Sicuramente con l’uscita dell’album vorremmo portare questi brani on the road, proprio per il fatto che molti in sede live suoneranno davvero molto grossi e potenti. D’altra parte, con Adrienne abbiamo avuto un’affinità di songwriting così forte che sarà bello nei prossimi anni continuare a sviluppare un certo tipo di sound e vocalità insieme; credo che averla avuta in studio per qualche settimana , sia stata una delle cose da cui ho preso più insegnamenti negli ultimi anni.
– E’ tutto per ora, grazi del vostro tempo. C’è qualcosa che vorreste dire ai vostri fans o ai lettori di Heavyworlds?
Marco & Adrienne: Ciao a tutti gli amici di Heavy Worlds, speriamo che possiate apprezzare il nostro debut album e , certamente, speriamo di potervi vedere dal vivo molto presto!

– Hello Adrienne & Marco, welcome on Heavyworlds.com! Adrienne, it’s a pleasure to have you here in Italy! How are you doing here?
Adrienne: Hi Pinka, I am doing great, I love Italy so far. I would not have problem moving there I think, one side I am getting better speaking Italian (laughs ndr).
– Let’s talk about this new project “Light & Shade”. How did you get involved in this new band?
Adrienne: Marco, the guitar player and everything, sent me a message because I submitted one of my other bands’ track to the sample CD for ProgPower, we started to talk and I guess he really liked my voice, so he sent me some demo, I sang on them and sent them back.. So I am the vocalist and the lyricist so yeah, that’s what I do now.
– So Marco, you are the mastermind behind this project, what made you decide to have another band project, what were and are your goals with this band and how did you choose this line-up? Adrienne has already told us how she has been chosen but what’s in her voice convinced you she was the right one for the project? And what about Luca (Temperance, Hatetyler) and Alex Landenburg (Rhapsody,21 Octayne)?
Marco: I don’t like to define a band as a side project or something like that, I believe that behind every new band’s story there is the will of creating new music and maybe to give space to a particular kind of creativity that couldn’t be used in different situations. This full length is a really a true relief valve for my passion for heavy metal with very aggressive voices, and that’s not all. There are a lot of atmospheric intermezzos, almost acoustic, a different use of choir, some songs are built like there is a choir made of 20 people in front of us. But in all of this, the voice of Adrienne stands out definitely. When I heard her band, Seven Spires, for the first time, I immediately thought it was insane that I haven’t already heard any of these songs with these parts screamed like Doro or talking about actual voices like Noora of Battle Beast. But it’s reductive only to talk about scream, etc.
Luca has been my music mate since ages, he is one of the people I trust the most in the music field and I am very proud that there is finally a song written musically by him and me together in this album.
It’s different talking about Alex, I think things happen always for a reason and few days later it happened our meeting during the tour with Rhapsody and we became really good friends and we decided to give birth to this collaboration.
– This project is named as “Light & Shade”, why did you choose this name for the band?
Marco: The name was already in my mind, I had it for a while aws it was in one of the first lyrics I wrote for Temperance years ago, and “Light & Shade” already sounded so sardonic and full. I believe that, as it should always be, it contains perfectly the musical idea we have, so dark for the vocal lines, choirs and orchestrations, but also with really clear openings.
– Adrienne, how was working with Marco & Luca during the recording process here in Italy?
Adrienne: It’s been very cool so far, we have just finished the vocal recordings in five days, that was crazy and I was a little bit jetlagged (6 hours ndr) but it was very fun and I am really happy to work with Marco and Luca directly, the only thing we did so far was working together for the video of “You Are”, which is the single. That was great so far, I really like these guys!
– And what about working with Alex Landenburg?
Marco: Alex did a superb job, he put most of his style in these recordings and we are really happy of the final result. I believe that, even though he is certainly well known for his speed- power parts, the best of his background is represented by the groove and his progressive sign that make him a very particular drummer in my opinion.
– The album “The Essence of Everything” is coming out on 18th November in USA and on 25th November in Europe. What’s the meaning of the album title?
Marco: “The Essence Of Everything” is not a concept album but somehow it wants to share different stories starting from the opener to the titletrack, linked by different connections, both on the lyrics level and the music level.
The album ends the same way it starts as the story comes to life, takes us to different places, lighter or darker as I said, and then taking back to the starting point. The title tells a little bit about us, both personally and as band and about how the music could really be the essence on which our life is based.
– Your debut full- length has been produced by the great Simone Mularoni (DGM) who has already worked with you Marco for Temperance’s albums for example. Why did you choose him again?
Marco: Simone will always be the cherry on the cake, the guy who is really able to take out the songs in the same way or better they were as initial ideas.
The sound is really full and powerfull thanks to his work, we couldn’t asked to have someone else to follow us. His wanting to be always opened to ideas and always ready to develop new ones is certainly one of his great pros.
– So “You Are” will be the first single and video, right? Could you tell us more?
Marco: We spent some days all together in Italy and we are so happy to have had the opportunity to film a video together; we live in different places, we have different tasks. But we really hope to live more time together if the album’s feedback is really good.
“You Are” is one of the first songs that was written for this debut album and maybe the song that made it clear more than the other ones the idea to really develop the band and bring it in front of the world. The video will be ready really soon and I am very happy about it, we worked with a really good italian talent; in this band, as in the other ones we have, we would like to give space to every kind of artist, non only musically, but also in the videomaking field, photography, graphics, that’s maybe is really the essence of everything we talked before, the disarming force of the music to link different artistic worlds in the same unique goal.
– Adrienne, you are using different vocal styles in this album, from “normal” parts to “growl” parts. How was working with such different vocal approaches?
Adrienne: There is only one part which was new for me: there are some backing vocals parts that are extremely low screaming. I thought I wasn’t capable of producing these sounds as I am female but that was cool. The other parts were metal styles which are like bread&butter for me, I love doing it and it all comes naturally. I had my vocal friend in the room coaching me how to do this super low vocals using “swallow your tongue” and other phrases. That was strange you know but it was fun.
– This question is difficult I know but what’s your favourite song of the album and why?
Adrienne: Oh, I have to think about this. I Think “Wonder So Far” is one of y favourites because I really like the lyrics for it and the contrast between the verses and the chorus, it’s about a dream and it’s just really cool, it’s super dark but also very serene, it’s a peaceful dark. Of course, I like “You Are” too. (laughs ndr)
Marco: That’s a really difficult question, it depends on the time, but more than a single time, I am really attached to different parts less canonic we recorded in the album, different ways of recording Adrienne voices, more theatrical in some points, as in “Drown In The Absurdity” or the choirs almost as anthem as Rainbow of Brokenhearted.
– So what are your planning future now for this newborn band? Are you going to have a release party show, any tours soon, could you anticipate us something?
Marco: We are discussing for different possibilities right now, it depends of course on how the band will be perceived but we are only at the beginning so anything could happen. Of course we would like to take these songs onthe road after the release of the album as most of them will be sound really big and powerful live. On the Other side, we had this good connection in songwriting with ADdrienne that it will be amazing keep on developing a kind of sound and vocal lines together in the next years. I believe that having her in studio for few weeks has been one of the things I learned more from in the last years.
