Noi di Heavyworlds.com abbiamo avuto occasione (scoperto a cinque ore prima dell’apertura dei cancelli ndr) di intervistare Felix Bohnke degli Edguy. Ecco cosa ne è uscito dalla nostra chiacchierata improvvisata.
– Ciao Felix, benvenuto su Heavyworlds.com, siamo veramente lieti di averti qui. Come procedono le cose in questo tour europeo?
(ha quasi fatto cadere il mio telefono per terra quindi inizia a ridere ndr) Sta riuscendo decisamente bene in verità, intendo dire il tour è iniziato circa tre settimane fa ed è stato veramente bello per ora, quasi tutto sold out e si, siamo veramente felici.
– Quest’anno è uscito il vostro nuovo album “Space Police – Defenders Of The Crown”. Cosa mi puoi dire di questo nuovo lavoro e delle principali differenze tra questo e “Age Of The Joker”?
Di certo è il nostro miglior album (lo dicono tutti). Questa volta la differenza principale sta nell’intero processo di songwriting, abbiamo iniziato quasi subito dopo che Toby e io siamo rientrati dal tour con gli Avantasia, ci siamo riuniti e abbiamo lavorato sulle idee di Toby e abbiamo impiegato credo 3 o 4 mesi prima di entrare in studio; anche la situazione di registrazione era diversa. Per “Age Of The Joker” siamo andati in uno studio veramente grande in Germania, con una stanza enorme per registrare la batteria; questa volta siamo andati in studio dal nostro produttore in Wolfsburg dove abbiamo registrato in verità uno o due CD prima, e, sì, è stato un approccio completamente diverso. Con “Age Of The Joker” volevamo avere un sound più da anni ’70, molto originale.. e questa volta penso siamo più vicini ai giorni d’oggi, un po’ più moderni.
– Qual è stata la canzone più facile e quale la più difficile da comporre per questo disco?
Questa è veramente una bella domanda ma non posso rispondere (ride ndr) perchè Toby scrive la maggior parte delle canzoni e non ho idea di quale sia stata per lui la più facile o la più difficile.
– Ok allora forse mi potrai dire quale è la tua preferita?
Questa è veramente una domanda interessante, “Sabre & Torch” è una delle mie preferite di questo nuovo album, perchè è sicuramente una delle canzoni più pesanti mai fatte, ha davvero molta energia e impeto, mi piace un sacco. La seconda migliore è “Love Tyger”, intendo dire solo il titolo (ride ndr) e il buon feeling dell’hard rock, la canzone rispecchia quel tipo di musica che mi piace veramente.
– L’idea del tour Edguy/Unisonic è nato dopo le esperienze tra Sammet, Kansen e Kiske negli Avantasia?
Probabilmente.. intendo dire, di certo questo funziona molto bene, gli Edguy hanno fatto un primo tour con gli Iron Saviour quando Kai Hansen suonava ancora lì. Quindi è stata la prima volta che l’abbiamo conosciuto. Poi abbiamo suonato in tour con Gamma Ray e Toby è riuscito a far cantare musica metal di nuovo a Michi nel primo cd degli Avantasia e nel secondo tour degli Avantasia è quando ho conosciuto Michi quando suonavamo l’intero tour, nel 2010 penso. Sì, è sempre stato una relazione personale che sicuramente ha aiutato e siamo veramente felici di essere insieme in questo tour.
– Puoi dirmi qualcosa in più sul video di “Love Tyger?” Mi ricorda lo stile del DVD, quello con il making of di Superheroes.
E’ stata un’idea di Toby in verità, intendo dire era chiaro volessimo girare il video e e all’inizio non sapevo cosa ma in qualche modo Toby è entrato in contatto con questo tizio che ha fatto l’animazione e quella roba, a tutti è piaciuto, è divertente ed è qualcosa di diverso, sicuramente non abbiamo mai fatto una cosa del genere prima. Era giusto un video divertente per una buona party song. (ride ndr).
– Cosa mi dici della cover “Rock me Amadeus”? Perchè avete scelto proprio questa canzone come cover?
Prima di tutto penso che Toby e il resto della band. Intendo dire siamo tutti fan del grande Falco e in verità un concerto di Falco è stato il primo concerto a cui son mai stato, ero veramente giovane (ride ndr). So che Toby è un grande fan di Falco anche e noi e lui abbiamo sempre voluto fare qualcosa del genere. Credo che all’inizio abbiamo scelto una canzone completamente diversa e poi il nostro produttore ci disse “no, provate Amadeus” perchè alla fine era la canzone perfetta per la nostra rock band fare una versione così che è abbastanza vicina all’originale ma è ancora un po’ più pesante. Ha funzionato alla grande.
– Un’altra bella canzone è “Alone In Myself”. Di cosa tratta la canzone?
Di nuovo, un’altra domanda per Toby. (ride ndr)
– Dalle grafiche allo show, il vostro stile richiama gli anni ’80, ci sono riferimenti precisi a band e artisti del tempo?
Intendo dire, non di proposito ma dato che siamo abbastanza grandi fan di quell’epoca e di quel tipo di musica dico c’è sempre un’influenza, non era pianificata, è solo successa perchè molti di noi ascoltano molto band degli anni 80, è giusto naturale penso.
– Considerando che voi ragazzi suonate insieme dal liceo, avete mai avuto litigi o incomprensioni tra di voi?
Beh, incomprensioni certo, tutto il tempo (ride ndr) ma non litigi veri, intendo dire, Eggie e io ci siam uniti alla band nel 1998 quindi eravamo lì quando è iniziato veramente tutto come school band ma intendo anche questa line up, siamo insieme da 16-17 anni ora e non riesco a ricordare di aver avuto litigi grossi, intendo discussioni si, probabilmente incomprensioni qui e lì ma funziona tutto veramente bene, intendo dire non siamo solo musicisti che suonano nella stessa band ma negli anni siamo diventati amici e ci conosciamo molto bene.
– Voi ragazzi andate in tour da secoli. C’è qualche episodio divertente successo in tour che ci potete raccontare?
C’è sempre qualche episodio divertente sicuro (ride ndr), alcuni successi da ubriaco, altri no, sempre in questa situazione non mi viene in mente nulla, forse in un minuto, non lo so (ride ndr). Di certo tante cose pazze e divertenti son successe tipo come quando abbiamo girato il dvd live a san paolo, il nostro tour manager ci dà il “ok, andate, tutto è pronto, iniziate il concerto”, tutti eravamo un po’ più nervosi del solito, abbiamo suonato le prime due canzoni e poi all’improvviso il regista e il tour manager ci aspettavamo a lato del palco e disse “Oh fermi fermi fermi” “Cosa? Perchè?”. Beh, le videocamere non stavano funzionando, sì lo staff delle riprese non era pronto, nonostante ci avessero detto di esserlo.. si questo è stato veramente strano. Abbiamo dovuto iniziare di nuovo da capo e dire al pubblico “Ok, cosa divertente, recitate come se stessimo per entrare ora sul palco”, non dovrebbe mai accadere. (ride ndr)
– Se potessi creare una band scegliendo chiunque tu voglia come membri della band, quali sarebbero e perchè?
Uhm.. In verità sono abbastanza felice con la band con cui sono, in verità sia Edguy che Avantasia, penso che non cambierei nulla.
– Se dovessi fuggire su un’isola deserta, quali sono le cinque cose che porteresti con te e perchè?
Questa è veramente una buona domanda, una batteria elettronica sicuramente, un cellulare, intendo dire il mio telefono comune dato che è un’isola deserta, magari posso ottenere una ricezione e quando son annoiato, forse potrei chiamare un aereo (ride ndr), cibo e bevande sufficienti e donne con cui divertirmi.
– E’ tutto per ora, grazie del tuo tempo. C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai lettori di Heavyworlds.com o ai tuoi fans?
Beh, prima di tutto grazie per averci avuto in Italia di nuovo, è bello essere ancora qui, godetevi il concerto e dite ai vostri amici, sorelle e genitori e prossima volta venite tutti e portate più gente possibile (ride ndr)

– Hello Felix, welcome on Heavyworlds.com, we are very glad to have you here. How are the things going during this European Tour?
(he almost led me to drop my phone on the floor and started to laugh ndr) It’s quite successful actually, I mean the tour has started almost three weeks ago and yeah it has been really good so far, almost everything sold out and yeah we are very happy.
– So this year your new album “Space Police – Defenders of The Crown” came out. What coul you tell me about this work and the main differences between it and “Age Of The Joker”?
Of course it is our best album (as everybody says that), this time the main difference was the all songwriting process, we started very shortly after Toby and I got back from the Avantasia tour and yeah we just got together and worked on Toby’s ideas and it only took us I think 3 or 4 months until we went to the studio and the all recording situation was different. For “Age Of The Joker” we went to a very big studio in Germany with a huge room to record drums, well this time we went to the studio of our producer in Wolfsburg where we actually recorded one or two cds earlier and yeah it was all a different approach. With “Age Of The Joker”, we wanted to have more 70s sound, very original.. and this time i think we are about up to these days, a little bit modern.
– Which was the easiest song and which one the most difficult to compose/write for this album?
That’s a very good question but I can’t answer that (laughs ndr) because Toby writes most of the songs and I have no idea which was the easiest and the most difficult.
– Ok, so maybe you could tell me which one is your favourite!
That is a good question, “Sabre & Torch” is one of my favourite of this new album because it’s really one of the heaviest song we have ever did, so far it has a lot of energy and vibe I just like it very much. The second best will be “Love Tyger”, I mean the title alone (laughs ndr) and the hard rock good feeling, the song and that is the type of music I really like.
– Was the idea of a tour with Edguy/Unisonic born after the experiences between Sammet/Kansen/Kiske in Avantasia?
Probably.. I mean of course this works very well, Edguy did a very fast tour with Iron Saviour when Kai Hansen was still playing there. so it was the first time when we all got to know him. Then we played a tour with Gamma Ray and Toby managed to get Michi back to singing metal music on the first Avantasia CD and on the second Avantasia tour that’s when I got to know Michi when we were playing the whole tour in 2010 i think. Yes, it was always a personal relationship that of course help and we were really happy to be together on this tour.
– Could you tell me more about “Love Tyger” video? It reminds me the DVD style the one with the making of Superheroes.
It was Toby’s idea actually, I mean it was clear we wanted to shoot the video and first we don’t know what but somehow toby got into contact with this guy who did
the animated cartoon and stuff, we all like it, it’ funny and something different, obviously we have never done something like that before. It was just a funny video for a good party song. (laughs ndr)
– What about the cover “Rock Me Amadeus”? Why did you choose this song as a cover?
First of all I think Toby and the rest of the band. I mean we are all big Falco’s fans and actually a Falco concert was the very first concert I have never been to, I was really young (laughs ndr). I know that Toby is a great fan of Falco as well and we and he always wanted to do something like that. I think at first we choose a completely different song and then our producer said “No, try Amadeus” because at the end it was a perfect song for our rock band to do a version like this which is pretty close to the original but it is still a little bit heavier. It worked really good.
– Another beautiful song is “Alone In Myself”. What’s the song about?
Again a question for Toby. (laughs ndr)
– From the graphics to the show, your style recalls 80s years, are there any precise references to bands or artists of the time?
I mean not in purpose but as we are pretty big fans of that era and that sort of music I guess there’s always an influence, it was not planned, it has just happened because most of us listen to a lot of 80s bands, this is just natural I think.
– Considering you guys have been playing together since high school, have you ever had some fights or misunderstandings between you guys?
Well, misunderstandings of course, all the time (laughs ndr) but no real fights I mean Eggie and I joined the band in 1998 so we were there when it actually started as a school band but I mean this line up we were together for 16-17 years nowand I can’t remember we had any major fights, I mean discussions yes, probably misunderstandings here and there but it works really well, I mean we are not only musicians playing in the same band but over the years we became friends and we know each other pretty well.
– You guys have been touring since ages. Is there any funny episode happened on tour that you could tell us?
There are always funny episodes of course (laughs ndr), some of them happened drunk, some of them don’t. Always in this situation I can’t recall anything, maybe in a minute, I don’t know (laughs ndr). Of course a lot of crazy and funny stuff happens like when we were shooting the live DVD in San Paolo, our tour manager gave us the “Ok, go, everything is set, start the show”, everybody were a little bit more nervous than usual, we played the first two songs and then suddenly the director and the tour manager were waiting from beside the stage and said “Oh stop stop stop” “What? Why?”. Well, the cameras were not working, yeah the film crew was not ready although they told them they were.. yeah that was really weird. We had to start all over again and tell the audience “Ok, funny thing, just act as we just came on the stage”, yeah it should happen well. (laughs ndr)
– If you could create a band choosing who ever you want as band members, who would they be and why?
Uhm.. Actually I’m quite happy with the band I’m with, actually both the bands Edguy and Avantasia I think I will not change anything.
– If you had to run off to a desert island, which five things would you take with you and why?
That’s a very good question, a drumpad obviously, a cellphone I mean that is my common handy since it’s a deserted island maybe I can get reception and when I get bored, maybe I could call a plane (laughs ndr), enough food and drinks and women to entertain myself.
