Abbiamo avuto il piacere di conoscere più a fondo una band svedese dagli spunti notevolmente interessanti, sulle note di un’industrial metal molto particolare. Conoscerete sicuramente Niclas Engelin, grande chitarrista negli In Flames; i suoi Engel vi appassioneranno! Qui è il bassista Steve Drennan che ci racconta qualcosa. Enjoy!

Ciao Steve, come stai? Che fai di bello?
Al momento mi sto prendendo una pausa, sono tornato al mio lavoro e voglio anche godermi un po’ la mia famiglia…
Parliamo del vostro nuovo album, “Blood Of Saints”! Uscito a maggio in Europa, è davvero grandioso! Con uno stile ancor più elettronico rispetto agli album precedenti; che ne pensi?
E’ interessante questa opinione, ma secondo me c’è sempre stato un sentimento industrial-electronic fin dall’inizio. Penso che l’elemento che fa la differenza sia l’avere una produzione molto più grande e migliorata rispetto al primo album. Poi certamente, ci sono nuovi sound e campionature ottenuti col sintetizzatore ed il processo di composizione musicale durante tutto questo tempo si è evoluto, ma in genere questi elementi elettronici sono la base di tutti i nostri tre album, la base degli Engel.
Com’è andato il tour?
Il tour è andato molto bene, è stato il nostro primo tour europeo da headliner ed è sempre bello tornare a casa dopo tutto questo tempo in giro, visto che è partito più o meno a inizio anno; almeno avremo un po’ di riposo adesso, prima dei prossimi concerti.
Qual è il messaggio che la vostra musica intende comunicare?
Penso che la gente possa estrarre da sé molto dalla Musica e spero che ci siano delle canzoni che parlino a loro in maniera personale e che riescano a incoraggiare i fan o farli sentire bene in qualche modo. Non ritengo ci sia un messaggio specifico nelle canzoni ma credo che chi ascolta sia abbastanza intelligente da riuscire a interpretare cosa c’è dietro i nostri testi.
Raccontaci qualcosa riguardo le origini degli Engels…
La band è stata fondata nel 2005 a Gotheburg con Niclas, Marcus, Mojo e Magnus. I ragazzi facevano parte di diversi gruppi a loro volta molto influenti nella scena svedese. Dopo diversi cambi di line-up specialmente nel reparto del basso, c’è stato il mio arrivo tra il 2007 e il 2008 ed infine con Jimmy alla batteria a partire dal 2010 la formazione può dirsi completa. Il resto è storia o storia in via di sviluppo, come preferite voi!
E’ difficile per Niclas gestire due band come gli In Flames e gli Engels?
Abbiamo sempre trovato il modo di lavorare insieme anche quando eravamo distanti. La parte live può essere separata dalla fase di registrazione, si trova sempre il modo.
Cosa ispira di più il processo compositivo?
Niclas è sempre stato la forza guida che si cela dietro le canzoni e condivido con lui numerose preferenze musicali. Lui però può comporre così velocemente e ha sempre così tante nuove idee che a volte è dura stargli dietro, procedendo allo stesso ritmo. Penso che la magia inizi quando ciascuno di noi apporta nelle canzoni il suo stile individuale, perciò credo che l’ispirazione giunga attraverso queste diverse forme!
C’è qualche band che influenza la vostra musica?
Si e no, non usiamo “template” per scrivere musica o copiare stili, ma come detto sopra penso che la musica arrivi dai nostri stili personali anche se ovviamente troviamo ispirazioni da coloro che possono definirsi “eroi”, come Ronnie James Dio, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, etc.
Ricordi divertenti o anche imbarazzanti durante i vostri show?
Troppi da elencare e pochi da ricordare 🙂
Vi piacerebbe suonare nuovamente in Italia? Quando pensi sarà possibile? A noi piacerebbe!
Ma certo, ci piace suonare ovunque e l’Italia non fa eccezione! Sono sicuro che torneremo molto presto, penso nel 2013 ma avviseremo non appena le cose saranno ufficiali.
Quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?
Avere sempre qualcosa di organizzato, sperando di riuscire a suonare anche in paesi dove non l’abbiamo ancora fatto; in effetti non smettiamo mai di lavorare anche se al momento le cose si possono prendere con un po’ più di calma dopo un anno così impegnativo!

Grazie, guardate questo… Il mio nome è Steve Drennan, sono il bassista ed anche il più figo della band…sono anche l’unico membro inglese!

Hi guys, how are you? What are you doing right now?
At the moment, just taking a break from the schedule and back working and being with Family on the most part.
Let’s talk about your new album, “Blood Of Saints”; it has been released last May in Europe and it sounds great! Its style is still more electronic than the past albums, what do you think about it?
Its interesting you say that but for me there has always been an electronic industrial feel from the very start. I think what probably makes a difference is having a much bigger and better production than the first Album. Of course there are new synth sounds and samples and the song writing has evolved along the way but there are elements in all three albums that make it Engel.
How’s the tour going on?
The tour went very well as the recent one was our first real European Headline tour and it felt good to be back out in Europe alhough we have been out of the road since pretty much the start of the year and at least now we can take some small breaks between shows.
What’s the most important message your music wants to communicate?
I think people can take alot for themselves from the Music and hopefully there are songs that speak to them personally and maybe encourage or make them feel good about themselves. I dont think we go out with a specific hidden meaning to the songs but we believe people are smart enough to interpret what we have behind the lyrics.
Tell us something about Engel’s origins…
The band founded back in Gothenburg 2005 with Niclas, Marcus, Mojo and Magnus. The guys had all been in very influential Swedish bands before Engel and the vision was started there. Various line up changes followed and mostly in the Bass department until my arrival in 2007/2008 and more recently the addition of Jimmy to drums in 2010. The rest is History or History in the making, what ever you like best!
How does Niclas manages two important bands like In Flames and Engel? Is it difficult?
As i’m not Niclas answering, its probably best for him to comment on but we have always found a way of working together whilst being apart. The live Engel part and the recording part can be different.
What inspires you more during the composing process?
Niclas has always been the driving force behind the songs and he and i do share a lot of similar tastes when it comes to music but he can write quickly and always has new ideas that it sometimes for me can be hard to keep up with. I think the real magic starts to happen when the whole band starts to add their individual styles to the songs so i guess inspiration comes in many forms!
Is your music influenced by some other band?
Yes and no, again we don’t use other bands as a template to write or copy styles from, as above i think that comes from our own personal styles but we do find inspiration from the likes of Heroes such as Ronnie James Dio, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode etc.
What was the funniest/most embarrassing thing that ever happened during your shows?
Too many to name and too few to remember 🙂
Would you like to play again in Italy? When do you think it will be possible? We definitely would like it!
Of course, we always want to play everywhere and Italy is no exception. Am sure on future tours we will be back and i expect sometime 2013 but we will advertise as much as soon as things are made official.
What are your future projects?
Always something being planned and hoping to get out to play some new countries we haven’t performed to but we never really stop from working but right now its taking things a little slower after such a busy year!
