NIGHTWISH – Endless Forms Most Beautiful

Come ogni album dei Nightwish che si rispetti, l’introduzione ci mostra subito una band con una chiara fame di emozioni nei confronti della propria musica.

“Shudder Before The Beautiful” nei suoi 6 minuti ci riporta indietro mescolando i fasti del passato di Once con i classici duelli chitarra/ tastiera dei primi lavori della band finnica. Denotiamo da subito come la nuova singer Floor Jansen si sia amalgamata alla perfezione a questo tipo sound, unendo alla sua classica potenza vocale un timbro magniloquente in grado di reggere il confronto con le famose cantanti precedenti. Da sottolineare la presenza del leggendario Richard Dawkins alla sua prima apparizione in campo musicale.

Il nostro viaggio continua con “Weak Fantasy“; uno dei brani più heavy mai concepiti dal genio di Tuomas Holopainen. Qui prende parte alla scena anche la voce di Marco Hietala, la cui grinta riesce a dare al brano colori particolari che solo il suo timbro può riuscire a raggiungere.

Scelto come singolo apripista, “Élan” si muove sulla scia di alcuni dei brani più famosi della band tra cui la bellissima “Amaranth”. Una canzone rimasta in dubbio fino all’ultimo momento per essere aggiunta a questo disco, che riesce però a vivere di luce propria grazie alla solita Floor, qui una delle sue migliori prestazioni.

Ancora heavy metal con Kai Hahto dei Wintersun, presente come special guest alla batteria in tutto l’album a dettare legge in “Yours Is An Empty Hope” che ricorda alcune soluzioni usate ai tempi di Century Child ma ora mescolate ad alcune parti atmosferiche, una delle vere forze di questo album.

Come anticipato nelle prime interviste promozionali, “Our Decades In The Sun” si attesta come uno dei brani più emozionanti di Endless Forms Most Beautiful, vuoi per l’argomentazione (i genitori dei membri della band ndr) vuoi per l’incedere infinitivamente classico e dolce allo stesso tempo, con, ancora una volta, la singer in prima linea.

Finalmente porta il suo apporto al nuovo full length, uno dei nuovi membri, Troy Donockley, la bella “My Walden” si prepara ad essere uno dei nuovi brani cardine per gli spettacoli che porteranno i Nightwish in tutto il mondo nel 2015, grazie alla vena folk più vicina all’atmosfera dei festival estivi del resto del lavoro.

“Endless Forms Most Beautiful“, dopo un’intro di batteria che segue gli stilemi del rock più commerciale, si attesta come uno dei brani più riusciti del plattern con ancora in evidenza i chitarroni heavy metal e un ritornello pronto a stamparsi in testa al primo ascolto.

Ancora un richiamo a Dark Passion Play nella successiva “Edema Ruh“, che parte da un famoso romanzo fantasy definendo i Nightwish stessi come degli artisti viaggiatori senza tempo.

Ricordate Bye Bye Beautiful, il brano che sanciva una sorta di testamento nei confronti di Tarja Turunen? “Alpenglow” è la sua degna continuazione aumentandone la verve teatrale con quella magniloquenza orchestrale, integrante parte del sound di Tuomas e soci.

Il penultimo brano contenuto, “The Eyes of Sharbat Gula“, è l’unica strumentale presente, a cui i nostri c’hanno ormai abituato di album in album. Molto cara a Tuomas, parla di un argomento difficile come quello della guerra vista dagli occhi di un bambino. Citazione particolare per la famosissima foto che mostra una bambina afghana dagli occhi verdi coinvolta nelle atrocità del conflitto. Verso la metà del brano fanno capolino alcune voci di un coro di bambini, che riescono ad emozionare anche i fan più difficili da ascoltare.

Ci avevano abituato a chiudere i loro dischi con lunghe suite pregne di parti orchestrali ed “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” non è da meno. “The Greatest Show on Earth” é un lunghissimo viaggio che nei suoi 24 minuti, ripercorre la storia della terra e dei suoi milioni di anni di vita. Il brano è la quinta essenza di quello che sono oggi i Nightwish; arrangiamenti cinematografici, un riffing diretto e senza fronzoli unito ai loro marchi di fabbrica come i grandi cori, le immense parti vocali e la maestosità stessa dell’autentico genio della band, Tuomas Holopainen.

Il gruppo finnico ci mostra ancora una volta gli artigli nel suo lavoro più difficile ed ambizioso, che sicuramente dividerà i fans, per via di un sound non di facile presa e molto evoluto rispetto al passato. Dopo esserci addentrati totalmente ascolto dopo ascolto in “Endless Forms Most Beautiful” siamo rimasti completamente attratti da questo vortice di emozioni in cui Floor e soci hanno raggiunto il loro picco artistico  facendoci però chiudere la recensione con un’affermazione di cui siete certi: il mondo non è pronto per questo nuovo full length.

Like each respected Nightwish album, the intro immediately shows a band with a distinct hunger of emotions referring to their own music.

“Shudder Before The Beautiful“, in its 6-minutes- length, brings us back to the past by mixing the splendor of Once with the classic duels between guitar and keyboard, as we can see in the earlier work of the Finnish band. We could immediately denote how the new singer Floor Jansen has adapted herself perfectly to this kind of sound, combining the magniloquent timbre of her classic power with a voice capable of holding the comparison between her and the two earlier singers. Last but not least, it’s important to underline the presence of the legendary Richard Dawkins in his first appearance in the music field.

Our journey continues with “Weak Fantasy“, one of the heaviest songs ever been written by the genious Tuomas Holopainen. There’s also Marco Hietala’s voice providing the song with the particular colours that only his timbre is able to reach.

Chosen as the first single of this new era, “Élan” is similar to some of the most famous songs of the band, including Amaranth. A song which was doubted for until the end wheather it should be added or not to the new album, but it is capable of living its own life, thanks to Floor with one of her best perfomances here.

More heavy metal with special guest Kai Hahto from Wintersun on drums, joining on this whole album, especially in “Yours is an Empty Hope“, which reminds us to some parts of the Century Child era, now mixed to some atmospheric parts, one of the best features of the album.

As it was anticipated in the first promotional interviews, “Our Decades In The Sun” is one of the most touching songs of “Endless Forms Most Beautiful“, both for the theme (which is about band member’s parents) and for the classic and sweet features with the singer in first line again.

Now it’s one of the new members Troy Donockley‘s turn to contribute to the new album, the beautiful “My Walden” seems to be one of the key songs for the shows, planned all over the world for 2015, thanks to the folk sound which is closer to the summer festival atmosphere than the rest of the album.

“Endless Forms Most Beautiful”, after an intro of drums following the most commercial rock features, is one of the well done songs of the new work underlining the heavy metal guitars and with a catchy, unforgettable chorus melody at first hearing. We could find another recall to Dark Passion Play in the next track “Edema Ruh“, which starts from a famous fantasy novel, defining Nightwish themselves as artists travellers without time.

Do you remember Bye Bye Beautiful, the song dedicated to the leaving Tarja Turunen? “Alpenglow” is a kind of continuation, soundly speaking, increasing the theatral verve with that orchestral magniloquence, completing the part of Tuomas and the other members.
