Seattle, ottobre 2018. I Fifth Angel, gruppo poco conosciuto, ma che sicuramente avrebbe meritato più attenzione negli anni ’80, ha deciso di rimettersi in pista con un nuovo disco, che uscirà questo fine settimana. In attesa di parlarvi di “The Third Secret” (questo il nome del loro terzo full length), abbiamo deciso di scambiare quattro chiacchiere con Ken Mary, batterista del gruppo dagli esordi, oltre che, in anni diversi, di numerosi altri artisti (Alice Cooper, Chastain, Impellitteri, Flotsam and Jetsam). Di seguito quello che ci ha detto.
Ciao Ken, come stai? Prima di tutto, te lo chiederanno tutti, ma cosa è successo in casa Fifth Angel dalla reunion del 2010 al 2018?
Ken Mary: abbiamo parlato di fare un nuovo disco per diversi anni, e non ho partecipato al primo Keep it True festival a cui la band ha suonato nel 2010. Comunque,ho voluto vedere le registrazioni del concerto e ho chiesto a Oliver del Keep it True (Oliver Weinsheimer, redattore di Rock Hard e tra gli organizzatori del festival, nda) se mi potesse inviare il materiale. È stato contento di avere nostre notizie e ci ha chiesto di suonare nel Keep it True 2017. Nella stessa occasione, Jaap Wagemaker ha ascoltato delle demo e ha avuto l’impressione che avessero il classico sound dei Fifth Angel. Abbiamo completato un demo di tre canzoni qualche mese più tardi e glielo abbiamo inviato. Lui e l’etichetta sono stati colpiti positivamente dalle canzoni e ci hanno proposto un contratto. Siamo anche noi fan della Nuclear Blast, quindi abbiamo immediatamente accettato! Successivamente abbiamo lavorato sulla composizione e registrazione del resto del materiale per “The Third Secret”, che come sai è il nostro primo disco da molti anni a questa parte.
“The Third Secret” suona fresco e offre nuovi elementi, forse più cupi rispetto al passato, ma mantiene anche la propria identità Fifth-Angel, nonostante sia stato registrato così tanti anni dopo il vostro disco precedente. Sei d’accordo?
Ken: Sì, sono d’accordo. Volevamo certamente registrare un disco che tu potessi ascoltare dopo i due album precedenti e riconoscere che provenisse dalla stessa band. Credo che ci siamo riusciti, dato che il nuovo materiale suona Fifth Angel. In passato quando abbiamo lavorato con altri cantanti (ed erano grandi cantanti), questo fu uno dei problemi che riscontravamo; le canzoni non suonavano necessariamente come i Fifth Angel. Su “The Third Secret” credo tu possa certamente dire che si tratta dello stesso gruppo, ma che ci siamo anche evoluti un poco negli anni. Abbiamo pensato che fosse importante mostrare anche una crescita musicale.
Ovviamente anche l’artwork richiama alla mente i vostri precedenti lavori. Chi lo ha eseguito e dove avete tratto l’idea per realizzarlo?
Ken: Zsofia Dankova ha creato la copertina, e siamo molto, molto felici di ciò che ha fatto. Avevamo qualche idea per lei ovviamente, ma lei ha fatto un lavoro fantastico nel dare vita a quelle idee! Volevamo ancora rimanere ancorati allo stile delle passate copertine dei Fifth Angel, ma mostrare anche qui un’evoluzione.
Per quanto riguarda i testi, c’è un concept alla base del disco? Come vi è venuta l’idea di comporre due canzoni (“Fatima” e “The Third Secret”) sui segreti di Fatima?
Ken: Beh, avevo sentito parlare del terzo segreto di Fatima, e ho fatto qualche ricerca sulla materia. Da ciò che ho letto, sembra che, con ogni probabilità, il terzo segreto fosse molto più apocalittico nei fatti di quanto la Chiesa abbia invece rivelato come tale, nel 2000, e così ci sono molte persone, me compreso, che credono che ciò che fu rivelato non era il segreto o comunque non l’intero segreto. Lucia, che era una giovane ragazza quando ebbe le visioni nel 1917, riferì certe profezie in varie lettere che aveva scritto e il segreto che fu svelato non conteneva quelle profezie. Quindi, essenzialmente, questa è la natura delle canzoni. Vertono sul fatto che il vero segreto non lo conosciamo…ancora.
Molte cose sono cambiate nella musica e nell’industria musicale dal 1989 a oggi. È stato facile tornare sulle scene e affrontare i nuovi modi di registrare, promuovere dischi con internet, suonare dal vivo, e così via?
Ken: il processo è molto diverso e in molti casi molto più facile rispetto agli anni ’80. In quegli anni doveva esserci tutta la band a provare in una stanza per sentire veramente come suonassero le canzoni, e per comporre assieme. Oggi con Skype e Protools puoi lavorare alle canzoni con un altro musicista che magari è dall’altra parte del mondo. E questo è solo un esempio. I fan hanno interazione diretta con te sui social network, che penso sia bello sia per loro che per noi. Penso sia più facile ritornare e lavorare nell’ambiente musicale odierno rispetto a quello di molti anni fa… assolutamente! La tecnologia ha reso il processo molto più facile in diversi modi. E suonare dal vivo è sempre emozionante e stimolante. I fan si aspettano di sentire le canzoni nel modo in cui sono registrate, e noi facciamo del nostro meglio per confermare le aspettative.
La line up, fatta eccezione per Ted Pilot (precedente cantante, oggi dentista, nda) è la stessa che ha registrato “Time Will Tell”. La differenza principale sta nel fatto che oggi le parti vocali siano cantate da Kendall Bechtel, il chitarrista. Questo ha cambiato il modo in cui scrivete le canzoni?
Ken: In passato abbiamo registrato con grandi cantanti ma per qualche motivo suonava sempre come qualcosa di diverso dai Fifth Angel. Ho sentito qualche demo che stavamo ultimando e non ho potuto immaginare nessun altro che potesse cantare le canzoni meglio di quanto ha fatto Kendall. Inoltre, suonavano ancora Fifth Angel. Quindi abbiamo deciso di lasciar fare a Kendall le parti vocali, e credo abbia fatto un ottimo lavoro. Abbiamo sempre saputo che avesse una bella voce, ma su questo album si è superato!
Kendall, tu sei un chitarrista, ma canti molto bene in questo disco. Come hai affrontato le parti vocali? Come ti sei trovato a registrarle? Ti sei trovato a tuo agio nel farlo?
Kendall: Mi sono divertito a registrare le voci. Non direi di averle fronteggiate, perché sono venute in un modo molto organico mentre lavoravo col gruppo. Lavorare con qualsiasi persona a cui stai cercando di offrire una buona prestazione può essere una sfida, ma lavoriamo insieme da tempo ormai, quindi mi sono sentito per la maggior parte a mio agio.
Partirete per un tour di supporto al vostro nuovo disco? Quali sono i vostri piani per il futuro dei Fifth Angel?
Ken: Ci piace sempre scherzare dicendo che lo dirà il tempo (“Time Will Tell” è il secondo disco del gruppo, nda). Certamente ci farebbe piacere avere l’opportunità di incontrare i nostri fan e di suonare dal vivo. Speriamo che ci sia richiesta tale da permetterci di farlo!
Voi siete di Seattle e avete vissuto in prima persona l’ascesa della scena di Seattle, con gruppi come voi, i Queensryche, i Metal Church. Alla fine degli anni ’80 stavate crescendo molto, come gruppo. A quell’epoca avevate un contratto con la Epic. Poi, nel 1990, l’ascesa della musica grunge, che ha colpito in vari modi i gruppi heavy metal. Cosa ricordi di quegli anni? Cosa ricordi con gioia, e cosa con amarezza?
Ken: personalmente non sono amareggiato da cosa accade nel mercato musicale. È sempre stato un campo con un rischio tremendo e probabilmente non cambierà mai. Se vuoi sicurezza forse hai bisogno di lavorare in una società di software o di internet, lol. Sì, ironicamente il grunge è stato allevato proprio in casa nostra, dato che viene da Seattle proprio come noi. Ma era una specie di anti-musicalità. Penso che il vero problema fosse che non potevano coesistere due stili. Se amavi il grunge, odiavi il metal, e viceversa. È stato davvero un problema e spero che non lo vedremo più ripetersi nella musica. È stato ridicolo buttare fuori dall’industria musicale così tanti gruppi metal. Non ho altro che bei ricordi di quei momenti negli anni ’80. La scena metal di Seattle era fantastica, ed eravamo eccitati dall’idea di farne parte, così come lo siamo oggi di essere ancora una volta parte della scena mondiale.
Col passare degli anni, i Fifth Angel sono diventati un gruppo cult. Vorrei chiederti di riassumere in poche parole la vostra intera carriera musicale, parlando dei vostri tre dischi:
Ken:
– Fifth Angel – ancora uno dei miei preferiti. Questo album è veramente sbalorditivo se consideri quanto eravamo giovani, il fatto che non esistevano pro tools o auto tune, e l’album suona di qualità molto alta, dovuta in larga parte al talento di Terry Date, che ha proseguito producendo gruppi multiplatino quali Soundgarden, Deftones, e molti altri. Questo è stato il nostro primo album, quindi ha un posto speciale nel mio cuore. Abbiamo tutti grandi ricordi dalle registrazioni di quel disco.
– Time Will Tell – Un altro grande disco, in qualche modo diverso dal primo album. C’era un approccio più leggero alle canzoni, che penso fosse positivo, considerando che l’etichetta fosse l’Epic Records. Mi piace ancora molto ascoltarlo oggi, è un altro disco che, penso, ha sicuramente resistito alla prova del tempo.
– The Third Secret – Nel fare questo disco abbiamo messo sicuramente tutta la nostra passione e la nostra energia. Speriamo che sia un altro album che resista alla prova del tempo. Abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio per inserire solo canzoni che amiamo e che ci hanno ispirato. Crediamo che, se abbiamo amato questo disco e siamo esaltati dalla musica che abbiamo creato, magari anche i fan proveranno quello che proviamo noi. Come dice l’album precedente, “Time Wil Tell”, ahah.
Ultima domanda: Siete ancora in contatto con Ted Pilot (precedente cantante del gruppo che, come ricordato, oggi è un dentista, nda)? Sta incoraggiando il vostro nuovo inizio?
K: John ha parlato con lui un po’, e l’ultima volta che hanno parlato Ted ha riferito che non sta cantando da anni e la sua voce non è proprio a un livello tale per cui possa aiutarci. Da allora sappiamo però che sta di nuovo esercitandosi. Chissà, forse canterà una canzone o due dal prossimo album? Volevamo che suonasse con noi anche James Byrd (ex chitarrista del gruppo, suonò sull’omonimo debut album), e se i nostri impegni fossero combaciati, avrebbe suonato su un paio di canzoni da “The Third Secret”. Questa volta non è andata, ma ancora, magari nel prossimo album!

Hi, how are you doing? First of all, I know everyone is going to ask this question but I have to do this too…What has happened in Fifth Angel between 2010’s reunion and 2018?
K: We had been talking about doing another record on and off for many years, and I did not participate in the first KIT festival the band played in 2010. I did, however, want to see the footage that was recorded and asked Oliver at KIT if he could send the footage. He was happy to hear from us and offered us to play the KIT 2017 festival. At that same festival, Jaap Wagemaker heard some rough demos and felt they had the classic Fifth Angel sound. We completed a three song demo some months later and sent it in to Jaap. Jaap and the label felt very strongly about the songs and offered the band a recording agreement. We are all huge Nuclear Blast fans as well, so we immediately accepted! After that we worked on writing and recording the rest of the material for The Third Secret, which as you know is our first record in many years.
“The Third Secret” sounds fresh and offers new elements (maybe a bit darker than before), but it also keeps its “Fifth Angel-identity”, even if it was recorded so many years after your previous album. Do you agree?
K: Yes, I do agree. We were certainly wanting to make a record that you could listen to after you listen to the first two albums and recognize that it’s the same band. I do believe we did that, as the material does sound like Fifth Angel. In the past when we had been working with other singers, (and they were great singers), that was one of the issues we were having is that the material did not necessarily sound like Fifth Angel. On “The Third Secret” we feel like you can certainly tell it’s the same band but also that we have developed a bit over the years as well. We thought it would be important to show musical growth, too.
Even the artwork of course reminds us of your previous albums. Who did them and how did you get the idea for the artwork?
Zsofia Dankova created the artwork, and we are very, very happy with what she did. We did have some ideas for her of course, but she did an amazing job of bringing those ideas to life! We wanted again to harked back to the Fifth Angel style of covers from our past but of course show a progression there as well.
Talking about the lyrics, is there a concept behind the album? How did you get the idea of making two songs (“Fatima”) / “The third secret”) about the three secrets of Fatima?
K: Well, I had heard about The Third Secret of Fatima, and did some research on the subject. From everything I read, it sounded like there is a great amount of evidence that the third secret was much more apocalyptic in nature than what the church had released as the third secret in the year 2000, and so there are many people, including me, that believe either what was revealed was not the secret or was not the entire secret. Lucia, who was a young girl when she had received the visions in 1917, referenced certain prophecies in various letters she had written and the secret that was released did not contain those prophecies. So essentially, that is the nature of these songs. They take the position that we don’t know the actual secret . . .yet.
Many things have changed in music (and in the music industry too) from 1989 to nowadays. Was it easy to come back and deal with the new ways of recording, promoting albums with internet, also performing live (since at the beginning of your career you preferred to concentrate on the recordings) and so on?
K: The process is much different and in may ways much easier than in the 80’s. Back then you had to have the band all rehearsing in a room to really hear what the songs were sounding like, and to actually do the writing together. Now with Skype and laptop Protools, you can be working on songs with another band member that’s maybe across the world. That’s just one example. Fans have direct interaction with you on social networks, which I think is great for them and for us as well. I think it is easier coming back and working in today’s musical environment than it was so many years ago . . . absolutely! The technology has made the process so much easier in so many ways. Playing live is still exciting and challenging as well. Fans expect to hear the songs the way they are recorded, and we do our best to live up to that expectation.
The line up, except for Ted Pilot is almost the same as the one who recorded “Time Will Tell.” The main difference is that now the vocal parts are sung by Kendall Bechtel, who is also the guitarist. Did this thing change the way you write the songs?
K: In the past we had recorded with some great singers but for some reason it always sounded like something different than Fifth Angel. I heard some of the demos that we were finishing up and I could not imagine anyone singing the songs better than Kendall did. Plus, they still sounded like Fifth Angel. So we decided to have Kendall do the vocals, and I believe he did an amazing job. We always knew he had a great voice, but he took it to another level on this album!
[for Kendall Bechtel: you are a guitar player, but you also sing very well on this album: how was your experience of facing the vocal parts and recording them? Did you feel comfortable with them?
Kendall: I had fun recording the vocals. I wouldn’t put it as “facing the vocals” because they came about in a very organic way while working with the band. Working with anybody else that you are trying to provide a good performance for can be a challenge, but we have worked together for a while now so for the most part I felt very comfortable.
Are you going to embark on a tour to support your upcoming album? What are your plans for the future of Fifth Angel?
K: We always like to joke that “Time Will Tell.” We certainly would love the opportunity to meet our fans and perform. Hopefully the demand for the band will be there to allow us to do that!
You are from Seattle and you lived in first person the rise of the Seattle-scene (Fifth Angel, Queensryche, Metal Church). At the end of the eighties you were getting very big as a band. At the time you had a deal with Epic Records. Then, in 1990, the rise of grunge music, which affected in some ways heavy metal bands. What do you remember of those times? What do you remember with happiness and what do you remember with bitterness?
K: Well, personally I don’t get bitter about what happens in the music industry. It has always been an industry with tremendous risk and that will probably never change. If you want safety maybe you need to work at a software or internet company, lol. Yes, ironically grunge came out of our backyard, so to speak, as it came from Seattle just like we did. But it was sort of anti-musicianship which is something we worked very diligently on. What I think the real problem was is that the two styles were not allowed to co-exist. If you loved grunge you hated metal and vice versa. That was really a problem and I hope we do not see that repeated in the industry again. It was ridiculous that so many metal bands were more or less pushed out of the music industry. I really have nothing but great memories of those times in the 80’s. The metal scene in Seattle was amazing, and we were excited to be a part of it just as we are excited to once again be part of the metal music scene worldwide!
In the past years Fifth Angel became a cult band. Now I’m going to ask you if you’d like to summerise in just a few words your musical career by talking about your three albums:
K:
– Fifth Angel – One of my favorites still. This album is really pretty amazing when you consider how young we were, how there was no pro-tools or auto tune, and the album sounds of very high quality, due in large part to the talents of Terry Date who went on to produce multiplatinum bands like Soundgarden, Deftones, and so many others. This was his, and our, first album ever, so it holds a special place in my heart. We all have many great memories from recording this album.
– Time Will Tell – Another great record, somewhat different than the first album. There was a bit of a lighter feel to the songs, which I think was good considering that the label was Epic records. I still very much enjoy listening to it today. Another record that I feel stood the test of time for sure.
– The Third Secret – This album we certainly put all of our passion and energy into making. We hope that this is another record that will stand the test of time. We did our best to only put songs on that we love, and songs that inspired us. We believe that if we loved the album and are excited by the music we created, then hopefully the fans will connect to the music as much as we do. As the previous album says, “Time Will Tell!” lol
Last question. Are you still in touch with Ted Pilot? Is he encouraging your new beginning as a band?
K: John has texted and spoken with him a bit, and last time they talked Ted mentioned he had not been singing in years and his voice was really not at the level where he could help us. However, since then we do hear that he is practicing vocals once again. Who knows? Maybe he will sing on a song or two for the next album? We wanted to get James Byrd to play as well, and if our schedules would have worked out he would have played on a couple songs from “The Third Secret.” The schedules didn’t work out this time, but again perhaps on the next album!!
