Eccoci con il terzo ”episodio” di “My Job… Rocks!”, una sezione dove intervistiamo tutte le persone coinvolte dietro le quinte della musica.
Oggi scambiamo una bella chiacchierata con Tim Tronckoe, un fotografo belga di grande talento.
Sto veramente bene, grazie. Non sono mai stato così impegnato in realtà.
– Come hai iniziato la tua carriera da fotografo? E’ cominciata come una passione/hobby? Come si è sviluppata?
E’ iniziata come un hobby all’età di 15 anni. Poco dopo è diventata una passione e ora lo faccio come lavoro part time, parallelamente all’insegnamento.
Porto spesso almeno due macchine fotografiche con me quando son sotto richiesta e queste sono la canon 5d mark II e III con un 24-70mm e un 70-200mm 2.8. Occasionalmente uso anche un 15 mm 2.8, ma questo dipende dal lavoro richiesto.
– E cosa mi dici sulla post produzione? Come lavori e cosa usi?
Faccio sempre una post produzione. Nonostante sia poca,ma la faccio. Uso principalmente Photoshop e Lightroom
– Ti seguo da tanto tempo e penso che le tue foto live siano fantastiche! Come imposti la fotocamera? La luce non è sempre tanto buona ai concerti.
– Ho sentito dire che i fotografi possono fare foto solo durante le prime tre canzoni di un concerto. quindi devi essere veloce a fare le foto in buona qualità. Ti è mai successo di non aver tempo per finire di fare le foto? E come gestisci il tuo tempo nell’area fotografi, se è sovraffollata?
Questo ha in effetti i suoi alti e bassi. Un grande peccato è di sicuro che non hai occasione di scattare una foto all’artista nel momento in cui sta respirando per intonare le ultime note per finire il concerto. Il sudore arriva solo dopo le prime canzoni sfortunatamente. La parte positiva è che non ci annoiamo. Abbiamo tre canzoni o meno e il lavoro va fatto a prescindere da qualsiasi cosa.
– E cosa mi dici del copyright? Come lo mantieni sulle tue foto? Intendo dire, tutti possono scaricarle e modificarle.
Tempo fa ho visto un po’ di mie foto modificate di Simone degli Epica. Alcune erano veramente belle e le ho apprezzate ma altre erano veramente orrende.
Ci siamo evoluti in una società basata su intenet in cui è veramente facile far diventare qualcosa tuo. Lo tengo sempre a mente, qualsiasi cosa io metta online sarà sicuramente scaricata e cambiata. Cerco di non prendermela più al riguardo.

– la persona più divertente a cui hai fatto un photoshoot?
I ragazzi degli Steel Panther, erano divertentissimi.
-il/la più fotogenico/a?
E’ sempre stata Simone degli Epica. E’ sempre stata la mia preferita da fotografare. Non solo perchè è bella, ma perché ha sempre un portamento che sottolinea la sua personalità. Questo è il motivo per cui mi fa sempre fare belle foto.
Immortal. Penso che non abbia bisogno di spiegazioni.
– la più difficile a cui far foto?
Immortal di nuovo. Evidentemente non sopportano il calore.
– quelli che ti hanno detto che adorano il tuo lavoro?
Sono stato fortunato nel sentirmelo dire da molte delle persone con cui lavoro. Comunque, è stata una grande sorpresa quando l’ho sentita da Tarja in persona. E’ stata una bella cosa detta da lei. L’ho sempre ammirata e sapere che pure lei la pensa allo stesso modo delle mie opere è stata una vera benedizione.
– quelli che hanno detto che non apprezzano i tuoi lavori (sembra impossibile per me ma chiediamo comunque)
Bieber me lo disse una volta. Gli feci causa. Ancora in prigione. Il bastardo ha avuto quello che meritava.
Ghost, ma in senso buono. Il mistero può essere strano a volte. E’ affascinante. Amo questi ragazzi!
– i tuoi preferiti con cui lavorare?
Gli Epica. Una grande accogliente famiglia. Sanno che cosa fanno e ci mettono il cuore. Grande rispetto per loro.
Emilie autumn anche però. E’ stato bello lavorare con lei. Veramente creativa, dolce e favolescamente pazza.
– Seguendo la tua pagina, ho saputo che una tua immaginata firmata da Sharon Den Adel è stata rubata durante il MFVF. so che anche che hai trovato chi l’ha fatto. La ragazza te l’ha riportata? Puoi dirci se hai risolto il caso e come ti sei sentito al riguardo?
Quella è stata veramente una situazione sfortunata. Ho scoperto chi è stato e il caso è chiuso. Secondo la ragazza, ha perso l’immagine firmata mentre tornava a casa.. se sai cosa significhi…
Non ero arrabbiato al riguardo, più che altro frustrato e dispiaciuto.
Alla fine ho avuto 10 minuti. E’ stato fantastico. Ho passato 20 minuti a provare le luci in modo da assicurarmi che tutto fosse perfetto. Era proprio prima del concerto, quindi le cose andavano fatte velocemente. All’ora prestabilita, la security e io siamo andati a prendere Tarja e la band dal loro camerino. Mentre camminavamo in 2 minuti nel mio studio, abbiamo discusso alcune idee. Una volta dentro, abbiamo fatto prima delle foto alla band intera e poi abbiamo usato molto del tempo rimanente a foto di Tarja.
Dopo 10 minuti era l’ora del concerto quindi è andata sul palco. E’ una donna carina, molto rispettosa e gentile. Allo stesso modo lo è anche suo marito. Brav’uomo. Erano lì con la loro bimba.
E’ vero. Gli artisti che ascolto ora sono principalmente Alter Bridge e Behemoth, ma cambiano ogni settimana. Ascolto anche musica pop come Lady gaga. Dio, amo il suo ultimo lavoro! In ogni caso, il rock è dove sta il mio cuore.
Il migliore che mi viene mente è sicuramente il concerto dei Twisted Sister al Graspop Metal Meeting due anni fa. Rudy (mio amico e collega) e io eravamo gli unici fotografi a cui era permesso scattare foto durante il loro concerto durante il festival. Le luci erano incredibili, c’era tanta folla e potevamo andare ovunque volessimo per fare le foto.
Sì, è vero. Può essere veramente confusionale per chi non ci vede ogni giorno.
Spesso le band mi fanno “Caro, sei ovunque. Ti ho visto tra la folla con una maglietta rossa e ora sei qui di nuovo con una maglietta nera. Come hai fatto?”
– Qualche episodio divertente che hai avuto con persone di cui hai fatto servizi fotografici?
Pensavo fosse una conversazione priva di figuracce.

Here we are with the third episode of “My Job… Rocks!”, a section where we interview all the people that work behind the music scene.
Today we’re talking to Tim Tronckoe, a very talented photographer from Belgium!
– Hi Tim! Welcome on Heavyworlds.com, it’s a pleasure to have you here. How are you?
I’m doing really fine, thanks. Never been more busy actually.
– How did you start your career as a photographer? Did it start as a passion/hobby? How did it develop?
It started as a hobby at the age of 15. Pretty soon it turned into a passion and now I’m doing it as a part time job, next to teaching.
– What can we find inside your camera?
I always take at least two cameras with me when I’m on assignment, that is the Canon 5D mark II and III with my 24-70mm and 70-200mm 2.8. Occasionally I’ll also take a 15mm 2.8, but that depends on the work that needs to be done. Another thing that I cannot miss are ear plugs. They’re really necessary if you know you’ll be spending a lot of time with loud music.
Whenever there’s a photoshoot, I’ll take my studio lights with me as well. Sometimes that can be a lot of stuff to carry, but I can count on an assistant in that case.
– And what about the post production? How do you work on it, what do you use?
I always do post production. Even though it’s just a little bit, I’ll do it. I mainly use Photoshop and Lightroom.
– I’ve been following you for ages and I totally think your live pics are amazing! How do you set up your photo camera? Light isn’t always that good during concerts.
It’s always different, but my starting point for indoor concerts is a shutterspeed of 1/125, wide aperture and pretty high ISO. Of course, this varies from the one concert to the other. Lights for an Immortal gig will be totally different from a KISS show. That’s something you can prepare for.
– I heard photographers can take photos only during the first three songs of the gig, so you must be quick while trying to take them in a good quality. Has it ever happened to you not to have time to finish to take all the pics? And how do you manage your time in a crowded photo pit?
This actually has its downsides and upsides. One big downside of course is that you don’t really get to shoot the artist when they’re really giving their last breath to finish of the concert. Sweat only comes after the first three songs unfortunately. The big upside to this, is that we don’t get bored. We have three songs or less and the job needs to be done, no matter what.
Over the years however, I got to know plenty of bands personally, which makes it easier to shoot their full show.
– What about the copyright? How do you maintain it on your pics? I mean, everybody could download them and edit them.
Copyright is always an issue. Of course, getting credits is nice and shows a lot of appreciation for my work. If my photos get downloaded by fans for some new editing, I’m fine with it, as long as they credit me. A while ago I saw some edited versions of my pictures of Simone of Epica. Some were really great and I loved them, but some others were really horrible.
We’ve come to an Internet based society in which it is incredibly easy to make something your own. I always keep in mind that, whatever I put online will probably be downloaded and messed with. I’ve tried not to bother about it anymore.
– You also do photoshoots for the artists. So let’s play a sort of game about it. You could answer me with more than artists of course and explain me also the reason. So who was…
1) the funniest person you had a photoshoot with?
The guys from Steel Panther, by far! They were just hilarious to work with.
2) the most photogenic one?
It has always been Simone from Epica. She’s always been my favourite person to shoot. Not just because she’s pretty, she also brings a certain vibe that really emphasises her personality. That’s the reason why it makes two to shoot great pictures.
3) the scariest one?
Immortal. I think that doesn’t need an explanation.
4) the most difficult person to take a pic of?
Immortal again. Apparently they couldn’t handle the heat.
5) the ones who told you they love your work?
I’ve been fortunate to hear this from almost everyone I work with. However, it came as the biggest surprise when I heard it from Tarja herself. That was a really cool thing of her to say. I’ve always admired her and just to hear that she feels the same way about my work has been a true blessing.
6) the ones who told you they don’t like your work (it seems so impossible for me but let’s ask you btw)
Bieber told me once. Sued him. Still in jail. Bastard had it coming.
7) the strangest one to work with?
Ghost, but in a good way. Mystery can be strange sometimes. It’s fascinating. Love those guys!
8) your favourite one to work with?
Epica. One big welcoming family. They know what they’re doing and they have the heart on the right spot. Big respect for them!
Emilie Autumn as well though. She was awesome to work with. Really creative, sweet and fairytalish crazy.
– Following your page, I knew one of your pics signed by Sharon Den Adel was stolen during the Metal Female Voices Fest. I also knew you find who did that. Did the girl send it back to you? Could you tell us if you solved the problem and how do you feel about the whole episode?
Now that was an unfortunate situation. I discovered who did it indeed and the case is closed. According to her, she ‘lost’ the signed picture on the way back home. If you know what I mean…
I wasn’t too angry about it, more frustrated and disappointed.
– You had something like 3 minutes to take photos of Tarja Turunen and her band! How was this experience?
Well, in the end I had ten minutes. It was amazing. I spent about twenty minutes testing lights to make sure everything would be perfect. It was right before showtime, so things had to move rather quickly. At the given time, security staff and I picked Tarja and her band up at the dressing room. During the two-minute walk to my studio, we discussed some ideas. Once inside my studio, we first had some band pictures and then we used most of our short time for solo pictures of just Tarja. After ten minutes it was showtime and she was off to the stage. Nice lady. Very respectful and kind. So is her husband. Nice guy. They were there with their little girl by the way.
– Being in so many concerts means you are a metalhead too, right? What music do you listen to?
That’s true. The artists I currently listen to are mainly Alter Bridge and Behemoth, but that changes about every week. I even listen to pop music like Lady Gaga. God, I love her latest release. However, rock is where my heart is.
– Which was the best concert you have been to taking photos and which one was the worst? Why?
The best one that comes to mind is definitely the Twisted Sister concert at Graspop Metal Meeting two years ago. Rudy (my friend/colleague) and I were the only photographers allowed to shoot the show of Twisted Sister at the festival. Lights were incredible, there was a vast crowd and we could go wherever we liked to take pictures.
– You have a twin brother, named Nick right? He usually helps you with the photoshoots. Did anyone get crazy to keep the two of you apart? Any funny episodes about it?
Yeah, that’s true. Can be really confusing to people who don’t see us every day. Actually, at this year’s Metal Female Voices Fest, Marcelo (Tarja’s husband) was discussing the timing and location for the photoshoot with my brother, thinking that he was me. Then Marcelo saw me all of a sudden. You should’ve seen his face!
Sometimes bands are like: “Dude, you’re everywhere. I just saw you in the crowd wearing a red shirt and now you’re here again wearing black. How do you do that?”
– Any funny episodes you had with people you take photoshoot of?
I thought this was a non-boob-talk?
– Imagine you had to run off to a desert island. You could only take 5 things with you. what will they be and why? (Photocamera + all the equipment are considered as one)
1) a camera (of course)
2) a stage
3) lights
4) a good band
5) a damn long cable!

My advice: Keep doing what you love. As long as you don’t stop caring, you’re fine. Just keep on shooting.
